The Mission Of Patrick Henry Boys & Girls Homes

Patrick Henry Boys & Girls Homes’ mission is to provide a continuum of services to distressed children and families that keep families together and children safe and successful. PHBGH began as a boys’ home in Brookneal, VA in 1961, and this remains the site of three boys’ cottages as well as the main Patrick Henry campus. There is a fourth boys’ cottage in Halifax. Girls’ cottages are located in Bedford, Rustburg and Wylliesburg. Patrick Henry has two Hope for Tomorrow Counseling Centers…one in Lynchburg and the other in South Boston. A third HFT Counseling Center is scheduled to open in Farmville in spring 2012. HFT Counseling Centers serve the public as well as Patrick Henry residents and their families.

PHBGH is a Christian ministry, but is not affiliated with any particular church or denomination. Patrick Henry operates on voluntary contributions from individuals, churches, businesses, organizations and foundations and no government grants are accepted. Max Out the Mission

I am an optimistic person and so I don’t want to sound alarmist but I am convinced that the next ten years will be as critical to the life and well-being of this organization as the first ten were.

There are certain disruptive forces that pose both challenges and opportunities for us over the next decade and how we respond to these forces will determine if they are challenges or opportunities. Here are just a few examples.

• A very large and quickly aging population will be supported by a much smaller, more educated but less knowledgeable, younger population.

• An ever more culturally diverse society will turn up the volume on the political, religious, and ideological dialogue that may put enormous stress on national unity.

• A powerful and intrusive government will add more regulations to the social service sector but, because of itsoutofcontroldeficitanddebt,willbeforcedtoreduce its funding to that same group. The end result will be a tremendousstrainonthenon-profitscaringforthe greatest needs.

• Therewillbemorecompetitionbetweennon-profits(over a hundred are started every day) for fewer donors and dollars to care for more severe and complex needs.

• Technology, one way to save money and add impact, will continuetooutpacemostnon-profitsabilitytokeepstep.

• A coarsening pop-culture will be even more poisonous for the impressionable young and will increasingly magnify every social problem we have today.

In response to these and other disruptive forces, Patrick Henry Boys and Girls Homes must plan strategically for such a future. Below are three things we can do to build a stronger, more effective ministry that can positively respond to any future scenario.

1. Brand the cause not just the organization:Group homes may one day be as extinct as orphanages.

That doesn’t matter in the long view of our mission because we are not here to fight the cause of group homes but to fight the cause of helping children. Our cause, therefore, is timeless and its scope is beyond any one method.

I do believe that group homes have a very legitimate role to play in rescuing children and we will continue to offer this critical service but the point is this. We must focus our attention and resources on the cause not the method, promote the needs of children and families first and the organization second. By doing this we always stay relevant and even more so as these disruptive forces unfold.

2. Greater impact with lower cost:Impact is the entry ticket to a successful future. We must

be able to demonstrate that our particular interventions have efficacy and results. Well informed funders will expect greater impact at lower cost and therefore it is imperative that we find ways to do more with less.

As donors become more selective about where they invest their hard earned dollars they will be looking for organizations with good reputations, solid fiscal management, and lasting results. I believe Patrick Henry already fits that bill. However, donors will increasingly look at non-profits the way investors look at for-profit companies. The groups that can produce the greatest return on their investment will receive their cherished funds. This is one area where we can never rest. We must always look at ways to improve and save.

3. Build networks and partnerships:One way to increase impact while improving cost is to

collaborate rather than compete with other successful, like-minded organizations. It’s not always about building more buildings, growing a larger organization, or hoarding all the resources. I believe that networks and partnerships are the future. I am convinced that we can max out our mission by working in conjunction with other groups who share our cause.

I am not frightened by these disruptive forces - concerned, yes, frightened, no. I believe that there are solutions to every problem and resources for every need. We just have to have the courage, faith, and creativity to discover them.

Despite these unsettling trends, I am convinced that our best days are yet to come.

Kellie Hardison

Patrick Henry Boys and Girls Homes has an addition to our volunteer ranks that helps us highlight a growing population seeking to partner with us. Kellie Hardison is a student at Liberty University and is originally from Blounts Creek, NC. Kellie is majoring

in Psychology with an emphasis in Clinical Counseling & Research.

Kellie called on the phone after seeing our ministry on the Liberty Internship Website. She was interested in an opportunity to serve as a volunteer in the form of an internship. We talked about what that might look like and once we talked at length about our ministry, Kellie was eager to meet the cottage at Bedford to see if it was all she was hoping. Kellie and the houseparents as well as the residents had a wonderful visit. We decided to proceed.

Kellie, along with the houseparents and the internship program set what would be her “job description” while partnering with us. When asked what she hoped to learn, she was particularly interested in learning more about the problems the girl residents are facing and different methods to deal and interact based on those factors.

Kellie has been interning since late January and she loves being an extra person at the cottage to provide special attention, to be a listening ear and to do more one-on-one visiting with the girls. So far Kellie has jumped into house life as well, helping prepare suppers, accompanying to fun events like the circus, helping with homework and most importantly being available.

We thank Kellie for joining us for this season in her education. We know that as she benefits from this experience, it will help prepare her as she makes job & career decisions. As we help her achieve her goals, we take delight in knowing that she is also helping us meet our mission of reaching the lives of our residents. Thank you Kellie!

Phyllis Gilliams

When Phyllis Guilliams and her late husband, Ronnie, “happened upon” Patrick Henry Boys & Girls Homes Brookneal campus eight years ago on a day trip to visit the Patrick Henry National Memorial, little did Phyllis realize where this would lead for her. Fast forward from then until now: Phyllis is a PH Advisory Board member, a favorite “aunt” to PHBGH children, and an enthusiastic ambassador for PHBGH in the Farmville community. Originally from Hampton, VA, jobs took Phyllis and Ronnie to the Panama Canal Zone and Japan for 18 years before they retired to the Farmville, VA area in the 1990s. What Phyllis considers “retail therapy” and knowing the importance to children of something new (not hand-me-downs), she shops at out-of-season sales for current clothing styles for our boys and girls. Through the Farmville Woman’s Club she encourages the members to provide much needed school supplies for the children in our cottages. Beautiful handmade quilts for the Patrick Henry children arrive regularly, thanks to Phyllis’ leadership in area quilt guilds. Accompanied by her “assistant” (four legged Sophie) Phyllis spent the better part of our 50th Anniversary year creating visibility for PHBGH by selling Patrick Henry cookbooks and raffle tickets for a special

handmade anniversary quilt throughout the Farmville area. And had it not been for Phyllis’ leadership, Patrick Henry may not have had a float in the 2011 Farmville Christmas parade. Phyllis says, “I can hardly wait for Farmville’s Hope for Tomorrow to open this spring. I look forward to volunteering for Patrick Henry wherever I can help.” Thank you, Phyllis, for ALL you do for Patrick Henry’s ministries. We are truly blessed by people like you.

Valentine’s Day Party 2012A BIG THANK YOU to Liberty Baptist Church in Appomattox for ANOTHER beautiful Valentine’s Day Party.

For almost 40 years, members of Liberty Baptist have sponsored an annual Valentine’s Day Party for Patrick Henry residents. These parties always include fabulous homemade foods, beautiful decorations, warm fellowship, after dinner entertainment, and the crowning of the Valentine’s King and Queen. At the end of the evening as residents leave the party, they are presented with huge take home boxes of goodies for their respective cottages. THANK YOU, THANK YOU to Liberty Baptist Church!

Slowly the word is getting out that Patrick Henry is up to something big in its Equine Program. Change has been stirring in the hearts and minds of our staff, volunteers, and those intimately involved in our horse program. Our horse program began in the fall of 1998 at the Patrick Henry Girls Home in Rustburg. Over time many changes developed and

in the late spring and early summer of 2011 we realized that our “program” was no longer meeting the needs of those it served, and so purpose was given to form a new ministry that not only would include the Patrick Henry residents, but also the community at large. In the fall of 2011, “Unbridled Grace” was born, and with its birth, a complete change in leadership, structure, mission and purpose; all the while keeping in step with the Patrick Henry Boys and Girls Homes overall mission. With this change comes newness that cannot be confined within the old.

The mission of the Patrick Henry “Unbridled Grace” Equestrian Program is dedicated to enriching the community by meeting the needs of children and adults with special physical, cognitive, emotional, social and spiritual needs through therapeutic activities with and through the use of horses. Our core values are:

• Share the love of Jesus Christ through our actions within the horse program, and if necessary through our words

• Offer equine assisted activities in a manner that challenges individuals to achieve their maximum potential

• Maintain excellence in the care and management of our therapeutic horse herd.

• Value our donors by the work we produce

• Recognize that our volunteers are our most important resource • Provide a safe fun environment for all

• Encourage diversity in all aspects of our program.

Unbridled Grace has three distinct opportunities and components for ministry. The first is a program truly dedicated to loving the child and using the horse to bridge issues that the child is currently dealing with. The most important aspect of this is showing and sharing the love of Jesus Christ with and through the use of one of His most magnificent creations- the horse. The second is to offer a therapeutic aspect through the many facets and programs available such as: EAGALA (Equine Assisted Growth And Learning Association). And the third is to offer to the community not only these services, but lessons and other amenities as well. Among these, we hope to offer in the future, opportunities for the following programs and services:

• Therapeutic Riding• EquineAssistedLearning(EAL)• Equine Assisted Psychotherapy• Programs for Autism, ADD/ADHD and Communication Disorders• Year Round School Programs• Youth Groups• Workshops and Seminars• Equine Summer Camp• Able-bodied Individual Lessons• Able-bodied Group Lessons• Horse Shows of all distinctions• Boarding• Rentals

You may be asking, “why horses?” Those who are familiar with horses recognize and understand the power of horses to influence people in incredibly powerful ways. Developing relationships, training, horsemanship instruction, and caring for horses naturally affect the people involved in a positive manner.

The benefits of work ethic, responsibility, assertiveness, communication, and healthy relationships have long been recognized. Horses naturally provide these benefits. The use of horses is growing and gaining popularity with the rise of Equine Assisted Psychotherapy and Equine Assisted Learning.

Naturally intimidating to many, horses are large and powerful. This creates a natural opportunity for some to overcome fear and develop confidence. Working alongside a horse, in spite of those fears, creates confidence and provides wonderful insight when dealing with other intimidating and challenging situations in life.

Like humans, horses are social animals, with defined roles within their herds. They would rather be with their peers. They have distinct personalities, attitudes and moods; an approach that works with one horse won’t necessarily

Bedford Cottage is the place to be! From the Kazim Circus to A Valentine’s Banquet to “Girls Night Out with Mandisa” our girls keep us hopping! God has shown Himself in each of our girl’s lives and continues to reveal His

love as well as our love for each of them. As the New Year has started and spring is knocking at our door the girls have become very active. The girls enjoy playing board games such as “Farkle” and “UNO”. Angel, Tori, Vika and Emily are getting their exercise while dancing in the living room to the Xbox Kinect game “Just Dance”. In our busy driveway you will see Tori, Angel and Vika riding their rip sticks, rollerblading, playing basketball, and drawing with sidewalk chalk. The

whole cottage has a blast playing German spotlight at night time. The girls continue to enjoy swimming at the YMCA and now we’re getting ready to start our Unbridled Grace Horse Program where they will learn

how to care for and ride our Patrick Henry horses. We are extremely excited about this

opportunity! Emily is a licensed driver and in addition, Asia and Taylor have both received their learner’s permits…guess who’s teaching them to drive? (Please pray for us!) We are looking forward to our long awaited “Spring

Break” as we will be Tubing at Wintergreen and getting our in-ground pool ready for

the summer.

We had a fun and eventful winter and early spring in the Halifax Cottage. We enjoyed various Christmas parties hosted by our loving South Boston community, had outings with

the other cottages, and helped to collect canned goods for Samaritan’s Purse. Dajur completed his first season of high school basketball, being a key player on the 9th grade team at Halifax County High School. He is doing well in his classes and hopes to play a spring sport as well. Jonah completed his first semester at Halifax County Middle School and has enjoyed his science and art classes. He loves to go outside and play with the animals that we have at our cottage. Alonzo has also completed his first semester here in Halifax and has maintained his good grades in his pursuit of becoming a forensic scientist. He is working towards getting his driver’s license and has been doing a great job on the road! Josh has enjoyed a lot of time splitting and whittling wood, and is in the process of entering an art contest with a Miles Davis project that he did in school. As the seasons have changed, we’ve had a lot of fun in Halifax. We (Grant & Kelly Ingvalson) are transitioning to become houseparents in a different cottage and are so thankful for the experiences we’ve been able to share with our boys in Halifax and the incredible support that we’ve received from the community.

Our cottage experienced a major change in February. We were very sad to say good bye to our houseparents Ryan and Crystal Fulmer who left for a position in West Virginia. We are happy to welcome our new houseparents Grant

and Kelly Ingvalson who moved to Plymale from the Halifax Cottage. The residents, although sad about the Fulmer’s leaving, have adjusted very well to the new houseparents.

Our residents have been very busy this year. We recently welcomed our newest resident Skye. He is getting along well with everyone and already seems as though he’s been a part of our cottage all along! Skye and Dasmine recently went on a ski trip with Brookneal Baptist Church and had a wonderful time. Joshua has participated in William Campbell High School’s forensics team and the all county band. Tevin was a member of the William Campbell High School basketball team. Also several of our residents are employed through the Patrick Henry work study program. Dasmine, Yuri, Ryan, and Harley really enjoy making and saving money! Several of the residents enjoyed attending Winterfest at Liberty University. In February they enjoyed the Valentine’s Party at Liberty Baptist church in Appomattox.

Plymale boys are also working on learning independent living skills. The houseparents have been pairing up the boys and having them plan a meal together. After they plan the meal, they go to the store with a budget and buy their ingredients. On the night that they are scheduled they cook their meal for the whole cottage and it has been great eating!

We have been enjoying the mild winter here at the Rustburg cottage. Our girls have been able to do a lot of outdoor activities because of the nice weather. We welcomed Yasmin into our cottage in February. She has fit in well with the

other girls and has enjoyed getting to know everyone here. She likes listening to her music and hanging out with her friends. Savanah recently joined Summer working at the barn after school. They love being able to take care of the horses. Bryanna and Cara love going down to ride their horses as well. They are all looking forward to the upcoming horse show in May. Libby and Raven have been busy with indoor track. Raven has set some middle school records with her fast running. We can’t wait to cheer them on during their meets for outdoor track. While we have enjoyed the past few months, we are looking forward to summer and all of the activities it brings.

The Stephens Cottage boys have been studying very hard to keep up with their studies. We have welcomed several new residents to the cottage. The first resident we received was Bruno who has been doing well in the cottage. We were happy to

welcome back Devin who returned to the Stephens after leaving for a while. We also welcomed Kollin who was in the Halifax Cottage and was moved to the Stephens in November.

In February the residents enjoyed the Valentine’s Party at Liberty Baptist church in Appomattox where Devin was crowned Valentine’s King. They also attended the Shrine Circus that they greatly enjoyed. Bruno, Jakell, Isaiah, and Kollin participated in the Patriot Sports program which they thoroughly enjoyed. We also celebrated Devin’s turning 18 years old and the houseparents had a surprise party for him which he was very excited about.

The regular houseparents are out on medical leave and flex houseparents have been in the cottage with the residents. The boys are trying very hard to adjust to these changes and are being strong and prayerful that their regular houseparents will return soon.

It is hard to believe that the Holiday season was so long ago now. Christmas in Wylliesburg was a joyous time of baking, wrapping, parties, and fun! The highlight for the girls was Christmas baking and making Gingerbread

Houses. The girls were incredibly creative and developed a whole village complete with lights for our 1st Annual PH Gingerbread House contest. All of us were of us were thrilled to receive 1st place.

Our Cottage Christmas was an intimate family setting complete with Christmas hors d’oeuvre’s, dinner, and the many goodies that the girls helped to bake. This is the time when the True Christmas “Story” was shared and the girls opened the gifts that their sponsors picked for them.

There was an amazing time had by all at our annual HOGS Christmas Party and the girls enjoyed the personal interaction with their sponsors. Many were brought to tears by the individual caring that was shown and attention to detail. There were many firsts this Christmas as the girls also enjoyed participating in the South Boston Christmas Parade. Fun was

work with another. At times, they seem stubborn and defiant. They like to have fun. In other words, horses provide vast opportunities for metaphorical learning, an effective technique when working with even the most challenging individuals or groups.

Horses require us to work, whether in caring for them or working with them. In an era when immediate gratification and the “easy way” are the norm, horses require people to be engaged in physical and mental work to be successful, a valuable lesson in all aspects of life.

Most importantly, horses mirror human body language. Many complain, “This horse is stubborn. That horse doesn’t like me,” etc. The lesson is that if they change themselves, the horses respond differently. Horses are honest, which makes them especially powerful messengers.

Along with new purpose and mission, physical changes are taking place Rustburg as well. The barn and grounds are receiving an upgrade. In the barn, we have created a classroom that is in the process of painting and remodeling. Upgrades in electric, phone and internet service have been made. At the rear of the Jennings Barn we are constructing a “bulkhead” where erosion was taking place and the ground is being leveled. Development of a small indoor arena is taking shape in the lower barn. This will allow working with the horses even if the weather is not cooperative and will create additional space. Upon entering the facility one will notice the layout and change in fencing. The fence modifications will include three paddocks and a quarantine area. We also hope to have our main arena redone and fitted with new footing material soon.

We are planning an open house on May 19th which coincides with our Spring Horse Show. The Patrick Henry Annual Horse Shows for 2012 are May 19th and October 6th. On June 9th and August 11th Patrick Henry will be hosting 4-H Bits-N-Pieces shows. As a new endeavor, we are looking to host trail rides in July and September along with adding once a month Speed Shows on Friday nights in May, June, July, August, September and October. We are also hoping to add a ranch horse show after the arena project is completed. So, with all that is happening we are truly excited. We invite you all to be a part and to come and visit us to see what is happening within and around Unbridled Grace.

Kevin Adamson

Many of our Patrick Henry children have gone on to do great things for society as a result of our intervention in their lives. In this issue we are highlighting one of our alumni, Kevin Adamson, and his achievements. Kevin was a resident on the Brookneal campus in English Cottage from 1992 to 1996. He graduated from William Campbell High School and attended Liberty University. In 2001, he was awarded a bachelor’s degree in Communications focusing on Arts and Film.

While attending Liberty, he met his wife, Barbara, and they were married in 2003. Kevin and Barbara live in Charlotte, NC with their two daughters, Reagan,3 and Payton, 6 months old. Barbara is delighted to be able to stay at home with the children. They attend the Elevation Church in Charlotte. Kevin and Barbara love playing with the kids. Kevin is active in mixed martial arts and kickboxing .

Kevin’s interest in film and movie production led him to the International Mission Board where he began working as a video producer. After working with the International Mission Board for two years he moved to the Christian Broadcasting Network as the Commercial Director, Senior Designer, Animator and Editor of the company. Presently he creates music videos for several Christian music artists and he creates and directs commercials for Christian organizations. He has formed his own company called Adamson TV. Kevin continues to keep in touch with Patrick Henry and has become a wonderful example of what we are trying to achieve with all of our children and families.

Welcome New Residents

Skye came to Patrick Henry in January from southern Virginia and he is a resident in Plymale Cottage on the Brookneal campus. He is in the 9th grade and his favorite subjects in school are science and geography. Skye describes himself as a quiet person…“not a talker”, and one who is easy to get along with. He says he really enjoys listening. This 16 year-old says he is an indoor type person, loves to sleep, enjoys music, likes to daydream, and enjoys all kinds of games including board games. His favorite colors are black and white and his favorite foods are pizza, shrimp, and vegetable soup. Skye’s birthday is January 4.

Bruno came to Patrick Henry in November from the Washington, DC area. This 11 year-old lives in Stephens Cottage on the Brookneal Campus. He’s a 5th grader whose favorite subjects in school are science and math. He describes himself as athletic, enjoys riding horses,

playing soccer and basketball. He loves having fun with the other boys, especially playing football with Jamie and James, his special friends in Stephens Cottage. Indoors Bruno likes playing computer games. He says he loves to go places with people “like the circus” and he “can’t wait for this year’s beach trip.” Bruno’s birthday is December 12.

Yasmin came to Patrick Henry in February from New Jersey and lives in our Rustburg Cottage. She is 15 years old and is in the 9th grade. Yasmin’s favorite subjects are English, Spanish, and biology. She enjoys writing poems, stories and songs. When around home she also likes to watch TV and sleep. Yasmin feels very supported by her church “back home” where she has gone since she was three days old, and where she sang in a choir and did praise dances since she was 4. Her pastor stays in touch with her at Patrick Henry and she has written a letter to her home church. She describes herself as an outgoing person, makes friends easily, and has a variety of interests. She loves to shop, especially for items in her favorite colors which are pink and black. Yasmin’s birthday is May 1.

Angel came to Patrick Henry in August from Maryland and lives in the Bedford Cottage. An 11 year-old with a warm and friendly personality, she is in the 6th grade and enjoys listening to music, singing and dancing. She loves to go shopping, enjoys playing sports and riding bikes. Angel’s birthday is October 7.

had by all and all of the bystanders were great! One of our annual Christmas events that everyone loves is the Thomas Road Christmas Spectacular and this year was no different. A big thank you to those who provided this wonderful opportunity. So many times the girls in Wylliesburg feel disconnected by distance from their peers in PH and the many Christmas functions helped to brighten their mood considerably. Again another big heartfelt thank you to all for your kind support this past Christmas.

In January we were visited by Glen Allen Church of Christ’s group “The Stitchers”. These amazing men and women sewed a quilt for each child. The girls were so surprised and pleased that there was a quilt in the pile that perfectly fit each one’s personality. These quilts are treasured possessions by each girl and we cannot thank this group enough. January was a month of blessings as we also received winter coats and boots from a wonderful couple who is now in the process of becoming certified volunteers. The Lord is surely using His people to bless those who need it so much. We are very excited for the future when we think of the time that will be spent with this special couple.

February is always an exciting month as the girls prepare for our Annual Valentine Banquet at Liberty Baptist Church in Appomattox. The evening was filled with a beautiful atmosphere. The girls especially enjoyed all of the delicious food and the many pictures that they were able to take with each other. Thank you, Liberty Baptist, for another special Valentine celebration.

We have three seniors this semester who are all looking forward to graduation. Yes, we have a bit of senioritis right now, but our time with them is so short that even senioritis is a blessing! Two have been applying to colleges and one is preparing for Army life. For the most part all six of our girls are doing very well with their studies in school and we are very proud of them.

Life in Wylliesburg is seldom easy, but it is surely rewarding. We love, laugh together, cry together, and yes much of the time is spent learning how to live together. The Lord has many lessons for all from our seven-year- old resident all the way up to our houseparents. We are on an amazing journey and covet your prayers daily.

This gift came by way of a Wooldridge promotion in December when a percentage of new sales was allocated for Patrick Henry. Step Forward Transitional Services


Patrick Henry announces a new program-STEP FORWARD Transitional Services for young adults. The main priority of these services is to meet the physical and emotional needs of foster care or group home residents who may reside anywhere in the state of Virginia. The services include but are not limited to: job seeking assistance, life skills classes, apartment or house hunting, college registration and financial aid, military enlistment, food, clothing, and transportation.

STEP FORWARD Transitional Services are coordinated by Terrick Moyer who is well qualified to lead such an endeavor. A middle child with seven siblings, Terrick is right at home when it comes to working with teen-agers and young adults. He has a Masters Degree in Counseling with a concentration in Human Relations and has worked for the Florida Department of Corrections, Central VA Community Services, Job Corps

Centers, Associate Marine Institutes, Mel Blount Youth Home, Charlotte County Stabilization Unit, Kelly Hall Therapeutic Group Home, and The Ozark Center prior to joining the Patrick Henry staff. Of all the positions he has held, working with foster children is by far Terrick’s preferred choice. As a certified therapeutic foster parent and foster parent trainer, he hosted 18 youth in his home over a five year span. Along with two of his own children Terrick has worked with youth in nearly every conceivable venue. In addition

to those listed earlier, he brings experience in day and summer camps, church youth groups, and public schools.

STEP FORWARD relies on community collaboration with other service providers in order to meet the various needs of young people who are at least 16 years of age. However, in order to live in our Transitional Housing they must be 18 years old, working and/or enrolled in school, and able to pay $150 a month rent plus half of the electric bill. There are currently nine units available for rent in Lynchburg with future plans to open more. One male and one female Resident Advisor (R A) are also housed in the units to provide assistance and minimal supervision to the residents.

Transitional Housing was established in 2007 as an outreach of Patrick Henry Boys & Girls Homes. In 2011 it was placed under Hope for Tomorrow Counseling’s community based services, another outreach of Patrick Henry. The mission of Transitional Housing is to offer assistance to former foster

New Hope for Tomorrow Office Opens in Farmville, Virginia

The forward motion has been as constant as the Appomattox River over the last year, building the relationships in and around Farmville ongoing through our community outreach.

Over a year ago, after careful assessment of needs, market and much prayerful thought, Patrick Henry Executive Director Robert Day completed the hub outreach strategic plan for our Boys & Girls Homes services, and together with Jason Captain, Director of Counseling Services, selected Farmville as the next hub base for our ministry and services.

The news that Patrick Henry Boys & Girls Homes’ family counseling division would be opening the newest Hope for Tomorrow Center in Farmville has been met with resounding enthusiasm by the area’s citizens and leaders. “We have been amazed and so very grateful for the welcome and warmth extended to us by the people, community leaders and the Town of Farmville,” said Mr. Day in a recent appearance at the Farmville Rotary. This will be Patrick Henry’s third Hope for

Tomorrow Counseling Center, the first two located in Lynchburg and South Boston.

Led by the counsel and work of Patrick Henry Trustee Hunter R. Watson, the outreach plan began unfolding in Farmville through numerous individual meetings, and the speaking invitations accepted by Robert Day in the town’s church and service organizations. This past December’s Farmville Christmas parade included the first ever Patrick Henry Homes’ float designed, built and presented by Patrick Henry Advisory Board member Phyllis Guilliams and our stalwart supporter Nate Noble.

Working with the Farmville Ministerial Association, Patrick Henry Church Relations Coordinator, Guy Stockslager gave the Daily Devotion on Farmville’s WFLO radio station for the first two weeks in 2012. We are indeed grateful to WFLO’s Frances

care and group home youth by teaching necessary life skills that will aid them in their transition to independence. Using direct mentoring, coaching and Christian principles we assist youth in achieving their highest potential as they develop into mature adults who will make positive contributions to their communities.

STEP FORWARD will benefit the community by encouraging our clients to become law abiding, productive, actively involved citizens, neighbors, and employees in both their attitude and their behavior; by improving neighborhood safety and appearance through community service projects, volunteerism, and other community involvement; and by assisting individuals to make critical and informed decisions that will help them be more productive. After they set and reach attainable goals, they will then learn to give back to society.

but also the betterment of the greater Farmville community and citizens.

With a local Farmville Advisory Committee being organized by local supporters, the new Hope for Tomorrow Counseling Center will be not just renovated and painted for a spring opening, but supported ongoing by the work and efforts of a group dedicated to our children and families in greater Farmville.

In mid-February, Hunter Watson invited a gathering of forty some citizens and leaders to a lunch briefing by Mr. Day and Mr. Captain on the counseling center’s arrival and opening. Citizens associated with Prince Edward County’s public school system, Fuqua School, Longwood University, and Hampden-Sydney College were joined by business leaders, public safety officers, and two American Legion Posts in the Southside region. Afterward, Prince Edward County School Board Chairman Russell Dove remarked, ”I am truly excited that some of the much needed services you offer for our youth and families are coming to the Prince Edward Community.”

With the warm welcome and offers of support in the Farmville area, Patrick Henry Boys & Girls Homes is looking

forward to delivering the continuum of services to more children and more families in distress. As Mr. Day said recently to community development officers, “These children need to be rescued. Not later, but now. They can’t wait, and neither can we!”

The Farmville community and our supporters have taken this to heart. They’re not waiting and neither is Patrick Henry’s Boys & Girls Homes. Like the Appomattox River’s gentle flow through Farmville, our ministry and services will hopefully By His Grace also nourish anew and replenish in coming months and years those lives in drought and crisis.

It’s been said, “We cannot impact that which we don’t come into contact with.” Connecting with individuals and families at their point of need is our passion.

Over the past five months the new Outreach department of our ministry has served over 150 individuals and families in our local communities through various programs. Most of these families have had no previous affiliation with our ministry. We are excited about these new relationships.

Six months ago we discovered a need for a developmental, Christ-centered, sports program for pre-school and elementary ages, and thus Patriot Sports was born.

Last October we launched Patriot Sports with a successful Saturday morning basketball program for ages 2-10. Thirty-five children attended the seven week session which included six of our residents and many of our staff’s own children.

In January we expanded the program to include floor hockey, and indoor soccer. Fifty new children signed up for the weekly Saturday Patriot Sports.

There is nothing more exciting than seeing the smiles of children kicking a soccer ball or making a hockey goal for the first time. Children leave Saturday with new friends, a valuable experience in a sport, and a knowledge of God’s love for them.

“Patriot Sports is the place to be on Saturday mornings,” one delighted mother posted on facebook.

“We are so appreciative of this free program. Our kids love it. They look forward to it every week.”- Parent of 7 year old boy.

In addition to providing a quality service to the community, it has also been a wonderful way to expose families to our other services of residential care and counseling.

Patriot Sports would not be the success that it is without our team of dedicated volunteer coaches. We’ve been blessed to have six Liberty University students serve faithfully week after week, giving 6 hours of their time every Saturday. Kelsey, Cord, Brian, Kelly, Jasper-Lynn, and David have done a wonderful job mentoring our children.

Our Tuck-Gray Multi-Purpose Center on our Brookneal campus is getting more use than ever before as we’ve sought ways to utilize this great resource to host more outreach events and programs.

Since last October, every Tuesday and Thursday night we have hosted a community open gym basketball night from 7-9 pm. To date more than one hundred men between the ages of 15-39 have come out to play basketball. Often they are accompanied by their wives and children. We average 25-35 basketball players per night, twice a week. In the middle of each night of competitive basketball we pause for what we call our “Gatorade Talk.” Each person in attendance receives a free sport-beverage and Coach Adam Spencer delivers a devotional message. For two or three hours on these nights, the basketball court becomes a place of refuge, where anyone is welcome, and the love of Christ is shown.

Hearing the heartbeat of the needs of people in our community requires the kind of investment Christ calls us to. From the very beginning, planners and founding leaders of Patrick Henry Boys Homes were business owners, men and women of finance and industry, merchants and manufacturers, ministers and civic leaders who came together committed to helping children and families in distress. Now 50 years later, more than 1,000 children have been served and cared for by the supporters and the volunteers of Patrick Henry Boys and Girls Homes.

As we embark on the next half-century of Christian service to children and families, we are honoring our founders-past, present, and future by establishing a Founders Society in support of the children. By joining together in the Inaugural Founders Society, you honor the original founders while ensuring financial support so necessary for the children’s well-being.

We encourage you to join by May 31, which marks the conclusion of our Inaugural Founders Society campaign. Membership in the Founders Society is based on total giving in a fiscal year-June 1 through May 31.

Individual members of the Society will receive a commemorative collar/lapel pin of the Boys & Girls Homes bell recently refurbished for the 50th Celebration, will be listed by Society level in The Orator, and will be invited to the Inaugural Founders Society event.

Think of a loveable fourteen-year-old with a big smile and listening to his favorite music on earphones while cleaning up the kitchen….now you have a picture of Larnza! He has lived in Stephens Cottage on the Brookneal Campus since July 2010 and is one who always wants to “make sure things go right” in the cottage. What a joy this is to his houseparents, Carma and Pierce Foulk!

Because he is known as a conscientious young man, Larnza actually has a paying job on the Brookneal campus. He works in the main kitchen in the administration building washing dishes and cleaning up following group meals and events. He is has the reputation of being a dependable employee.

Larnza has an affinity for monkeys, has a collection of stuffed monkeys on his bed and is even the proud owner of a cookie jar with monkeys on it.

Not one to sit around, Larnza is always active. In recent months he has begun participating in Unbridled Grace and “loves riding”.

Devin, the first Stephens cottage resident to meet Larnza, has this to say, “Larnza made a great impression on me the first day he came and I hoped he would live in my cottage.” Fortunate for both of them, Larnza does live in Stephens.

Businesses Partner with Patrick Henry Boys and Girls Homes

Did you know that Patrick Henry Boys & Girls Homes is partnering with area businesses? This winter and spring we began inviting people to restaurants and diners, not only to get good food, but also to help a good cause: impacting the lives of children and helping to meet their needs. We’d like to say “Thank-You” to the businesses, managers and owners who are helping us.

CiCis in Lynchburg sponsors a Patrick Henry Night on the first Monday of every month. CiCis gives Patrick Henry Boys & Girls Homes 10% of all purchases made by customers who say they are there to support us. All you can eat pizza, fun fellowship with families and helping kids and families—priceless!

The Sweet Frog frozen yogurt shops in Lynchburg have a Patrick Henry Night on the second Wednesday of every month. The shops rotate the night from their Wards Road location to the Old Forest Road location and then to Forest Square. 10% of all purchases made by customers who say they are there to support us come back to Patrick Henry.

Little Caesars has a Patrick Henry Day every six weeks. 20% of all purchases made by customers who say they are there to support Patrick Henry Boys and Girls Homes comes to Patrick Henry as a donation from Little Caesars. Look for

the Little Caesars flyers around town to remind you to get your pizza HOT and READY!

Buffalo Wild Wings has a Patrick Henry Night on the second Monday of every month. B-Dubs donates 15% of all purchases made by customers who say they are there to support us. So call your best buds and all your BFFs and head to Buffalo Wild Wings for wings, hot sauces and fun times.

Habachi Buffet sponsored a Patrick Henry Night on February 21st. Patrick Henry received 10% of all purchases by customers who said they were there to support us.

Golden Skillet in Brookneal has a Patrick Henry Day on the third Wednesday of each month. 10% of all purchases on these days comes to Patrick Henry. Golden Skillet promotes this on their sign on the day of the event.
