Our Star LetterEach month we receive many letters from our fellow members, containing all sorts of information and comments. We try to print as many as possible in our monthly newsletter and our first choice letter writer always receives a jigsaw gift. We’re grateful to you all for your contributions and sorry if your letter didn’t make it onto this section, but please keep them coming. Next published letters could be you!

I thought I would write to say that when I started doing jigsaws after my husband & I retired, my daughter Susan and her husband laughed at us and thought (I’m sure) that we were pathetic. Well as you know by the amount we’ve ordered in the past, it didn’t put us off. Just before Christmas, Susan was diagnosed with Cancer and told she would have to take it easy and found that the good old fashioned “pathetic” hobby became a God Send. Now she is enjoying doing her jigsaws and hopefully is in remission. I do like a happy ending!

There is still one thing I would repeatedly point out and that is sealable bags for puzzles - It helps to not lose pieces.

All our Manufacturers receive copies of our newsletter so they may come up with a solution to the sealable bag question. In the meantime, do let us know which jigsaw you would like as your prize.

Seeing the puzzle with the John Bull Magazine cover-14060 (2 x 500pc) took me back to my childhood, when one of my Aunts used to stick the pictures from the front page onto cardboard ,then cut it into pieces. My First Jigsaws…..These were hard to do because there was no picture to go by. Now at 65, I still enjoy doing jigsaws and have a collection of over 100 varying in size from 500-2000pcs. My favourite puzzle is one from Clementoni of Neuschwanstein castle in the snow, with the sun coming up over the mountains. I actually went to see it 4 years ago and now have a collection of 20 or more pictures of it. Every time I do one of them it takes me back to my visit there.

Madam has dragged me to gift fair & Toyfair – I’ve walked around with dozens of brochures, pricelists etc- Still all for a good cause, we’ll be having lots more choices for you in the near future.

One thing we want to do this year is have a comprehensive children’s range, but I hesitate as to whether it would be interesting for you? If you get the time, would love to hear your comments.

We’re still working on producing a catalogue too… to incorporate those ranges where the Manufacturers don’t have catalogues?? Looks like an end of summer project at present.

And on a sad note - Michael Herrings Some would call it organised chaos. Old tins of paint that were last used years ago, rusty tins of screws and nails, bottles of varnish, and pots of dried up putty are kept just in case. This Aladdin’s cave, with its own special smells, wood shavings and cobwebs is grandad’s haven. Regrettably this wonderful image is tinged with sadness, because this is Michael Herring’s very last painting to be published as a Gibsons jigsaw.

This is Michael’s workshop and the dolls’ house on the bench is the one that he made for his wife. Michael Herring passed away in August 2010 and his unique style of painting will be missed by all those who have enjoyed his pictures and puzzles over many years.

It is ironic that in our opinion, this is Michael’s finest jigsaw painting and it seems that for us at least, he saved the best until last. We would like to dedicate this puzzle to Michael. We have been very fortunate to have been able to use his paintings for our puzzles and for those who grew up through the 1950s and 1960s; his images have brought back very many happy memories.
