The typhoon dumped record amounts of rain and washed out roads and bridges, and left at least 41 people dead. The storm also hit mainland China, where six people were reported killed. Two more died when a landslide submerged a group of houses late on Monday. Helicopters have been dropping rescuers into the village of Shiao Lin, in the mountains of southern Taiwan, and winching out survivors. About 150 people who survived Sunday's landslide by reaching higher ground have now been pulled out of the area to safety. The village is home to about 1,000 people but officials are not certain how many were there when the landslide hit. Survivors have spoken of hundreds of people still buried in their homes. One survivor, Lee Chin-long, told reporters: "The whole mountain just fell off. When I saw that, I started to run. Almost every house was gone, except for a couple." Typhoon Morakot dropped some two metres of rain on Taiwan over the weekend, causing the worst flooding in five decades. After slamming Taiwan, the storm battered the Phillipines and Japan. The authorities said about 1.4 million people were evacuated from coastal areas, about 6,000 houses were destroyed and more than 380,000 hectares of farmland flooded. China's Ministry of Civil Affairs said the storm has caused as much as $1.3bn dollars in damage. Meanwhile Tokyo and central Japan were hit by a 6.4 earthquake, which caused injuries but no deaths. Separately, there was another powerful earthquake off India´s Andaman Islands - both quakes triggered Tsunami alerts which were later cancelled. n the ews "Blessed are those who can laugh at themselves, for they shall never cease to be amused." Controversial abortion lawapproved by government

The new law, if passed, willmake abortion availableon demand for the firsttime and its mostcontroversial clause wouldallow girls as young as 16to seek an abortionwithout parental consent.

The Deputy PrimeMinister told a press

conference on Saturdaythat the law was about"rights and respect" forwomen but critics fear itmay encourage youngpeople to use abortion as aform of contraception.

The current law – whichwas passed in 1985 - allowsa pregnancy to beterminated in the

aftermath of a rape, whena foetus shows geneticdefects, and when thehealth of the pregnantwoman is at risk. It seemsstrict on paper butthousands of women haveobtained abortionsarguing that pregnancywas affecting their mentalhealth.

The Cabinet has approved the government's draft Law on Sexual and Reproductive Health and the VoluntaryInterruption of Pregnancy, known as the abortion law for short. And Deputy Prime Minister Maria TeresaFernandez de la Vega said the proposed law was “more in line with our social reality”.

Concerned that Opel'splant in Zaragoza will takeheavy cuts, he is insistingthat any reorganisation bythe new owners should"make best possible use ofthe company's assets". TheUK, Belgium and Polandhave also raised concernsthat they will be at a

disadvantage comparedwith Germany. Germanyhas offered Magna loansworth €4.5bn but the othercountries with Opelfactories have argued thereshould be no link betweenaid and saved jobs. In aletter to the EuropeanCommission, Sr Sebastian

said that the solution tothe future of Opel must beone that works acrossEurope - and not just forone nation. According todetails leaked to theGerman media, Magna isplanning to cut about11,000 jobs from around45,000 in Europe.

Bullfighting is not toeveryone's taste but forRonda it is an essential

part of the fabric of the town'shistory. Its elegant bullring isone of the oldest in Spain - itopened in 1785 - and it has seensome of the most importantevents in bullfighting history.

And it was here that the basicsof modern bullfighting werefounded during the 18th and19th centuries by the Romerofamily. Legendary fighter PedroRomero broke away from the18th century Jerez "school" ofhorseback bullfighting to foundthe style known today in whichmatadors stand their groundagainst the bull on foot.

The bullring's famous museumis packed with memorabilia likeblood spattered costumes wornby Pedro Romero, and photos

of famous fans like theinevitable Ernest Hemingway, and Orson Welles.

The artist Goya drew sketchesof life in the region, and fightersand some of the audience dressin the manner of the sketchesas they turn back the clock atthe corrida. So famous is theevent that on the 50thanniversary royalty and moviestars arrived in helicopters tojoin the thronging thousands asthey celebrated.

So from today until Sunday thescene is set. A welcome paradethrongs through the streetstoday and tonight the fair'sopening ceremony iscelebrated at the FireworkCastle. The town fair openstomorrow (Thursday) withactivities on the go from12noon until 7pm.

Friday is Harvest Day - andtime for the annual grapestomp. Everything leads to theworld-famous Goyesquebullfight which takes place onSaturday. The fair finishes onthe Sunday with a horsecarriage parade along theVirgen de la Paz street and adressage competition andshow. To cap it off, there arefireworks at midnight to signalthe end of the fair for anotheryear.

But Ronda is a place to visit atany time of year - it is not just adraw for the bullfightingafficionado. It is now one of the"Big 3" tourist attractions inAndalucia...it has slipped inbehind Seville and Granadaafter overtaking Cordoba.

It is a fast growing town but ithas retained its historic charm,

especially in the old town. It isworld famous and muchphotographed for its dramaticviews and the sheer 100metreEl Tajo gorge which carries therio Guadelevin through thecentre. Everybody with acamera heads straight to the18th century Puente Nuevowhich straddles the dizzyingchasm, for the staggering viewsover the Serrania de Ronda. Tallwhitewashed houses cling tothe precipitous edges.

The old Moorish centre, theCiudad, retains its Moorishplan and there are a number offine Renaissance mansions. The streets are maze-like so thebest approach is to wander atwill. At the centre of the Ciudadstands the cathedral church ofSanta Maria Mayor, originallythe Arab mosque. Outside it's agraceful combination of

Moorish, Gothic andRenaissance styles with thebelfry built on the top of the oldminaret. Across the beautifulsquare is the Casa deMondragon, possibly the realpalace of the Moorish kings.Just wander the streets todiscover the splendidarchitectural gems that aresprinkled liberally throughoutthe town.

The town's gorge is famous forhaving been the scene of someof the worst atrocities in thecivil war and Hemingway, in hisFor Whom The Bell Tolls, recorded how prisoners werethrown alive into the gorge.

Ronda, one of the mostbeautiful of the white pueblos, just an hour from the Costa delSol and a world away from thecoastal scene.

The WHO report warnedthat unless urgent action istaken to control thetobacco epidemic, theannual death toll could riseto eight million by 2030.

After studying 387 pairs oftwins, Danish researchersconcluded that the “baby-faced” are more likely tolive to a ripe old age than

Beauty Tip

A beautiful Christmas’Tis the season to be jolly and vibrantly glamorous.Christmas gives us girls the opportunity to shine andshimmer, from festive clothing adorned with sequins, tothe bright red shiny lipstick that we can bountifully andshamelessly apply to our lips.

Lips

The best look to complement daring red lip-gloss is toleave the rest of your face neutral with just mascara anda sweep of blush. This dramatic but simple look willensure that all the party eyes will be on you. Make sureyour lips are prepped up for that special seasonalsmooch by using a moisturising lip balm.

Nails

To make the 1irting look completeuse the opportunity to paint yournails hot red, but make surethey are well manicured asbright nail polish can

show up any1aws.

Eyes

Next invest in a tube of rich moisturisingeye cream and chill in the fridge prior to use. Thecoolness of the cream will help to awaken and refreshtired eyes and help minimise the look of 0ne lines andpu/ness.

A super sparkly eye shadow that has limited colour willset you apart from the heavily made-up eyes, giving youa subtle beauty that is dazzling. Sweep it onto lids andunder lower lashes and then apply black mascara.

Body

Use a skin cream that you can apply to your face at nightas your skin repairs itself while you sleep and could dowith an extra boost in the winter months. The key is touse an e.ective exfoliant beforehand that containssalicylic acid, which helps speed up the surfacing offresh, new skin while gently removing dead skin cellsand relieving clogged pores.

Now to make the body shimmer with a healthy glow –dust an iridescent all-over highlighter on yourcheekbones, shoulders, cleavage and legs. This willmake your skin appear radiant and fresh, and you willliterally be glowing in the party photos. Keep forsummer, when it can be used as a tan enhancer.

RESEARCH

Coffee doesn'tsober you upAccording to researchers atTemple University inPhiladelphia, coffee maymake you feel that you arecoming to your senses - butit is only an illusion. In fact,it makes it harder for peopleto realise they are under theinfluence of alcohol.

The researchers testedhow well adult mice wereable to navigate their way

round a maze to avoidunpleasant stimuli, such asbright lights and loudnoises. They were givendoses of alcohol andcaffeine in variouscombinations, and theirperformance in the mazewas compared to otherswho were given a neutralsaline solution. They foundthat alcohol made theanimals more relaxed, but

less able to avoid theunpleasant shocks, whilethose given caffeine werelittle better at navigatingaround the maze, but weremore alert.

The combination ofalcohol and caffeineappeared to producerelatively alert, relaxedanimals that were stillincompetent at

sidestepping nasty shocks. The researchers believe thatin humans the combinationis likely to make people feelthat they are not drunk, when in fact they still are. They said: "The bottom lineis that, despite the appeal ofbeing able to stay up allnight and drink, all evidencepoints to serious risksassociated with caffeine-alcohol combinations."

A US study suggests that drinking co#ee may be the worst thing to do to try to sober up.

NEWS

In its latest report on the "tobacco epidemic", the World HealthOrganisation said second-hand or passive smoking killed nearly600,000 people each year.

Passive smokingis a global threat

The Royal Society for thePrevention of Accidents(RoSPA) has warned that thehi-tech models of TVscreens pose a much higherrisk of toppling over onchildren than older versions.A spokesman said USresearch of furniture tip-over cases over an 18-yearperiod showed that thenumber of such injuries hadincreased, and thattelevisions were the mostcommonly-involved item offurniture. Currently, about7,500 children end up inhospital in the US each yearas a result and the RoSPAfears that a spike in salesleading up to Christmas, thedigital switchover and theWord Cup could producesimilar results in Britain. Thespokesman urged people toensure that free-standingtelevision sets cannot beeasily pulled over bychildren and that wall-mounted sets are securelyfixed to walls which arestrong enough to hold them.To avoid accidents, theRoSPA recommendedplacing flat-screentelevisions on a wide, stable, manufacturers' base. Inaddition, tethering strapsshould run from the top ofthe back of the screen to astable anchoring point, suchas a wall-mounted bracket, the spokesman said.

When you look up at the stars atnight have you ever wonderedwhat is the farthest that you cansee? When we talk about thedistances to the stars we can’t usemiles or kilometres as ameasurement, the numbers arejust too big to comprehend.Instead astronomers use ameasurement called light years. So what is a light year? You mightneed a calculator for this!If you switch a torch on and shineit at a wall, the light leaves the torchand travels the short distance andstrikes the wall almostinstantaneously. Now travel186,000 miles away or about ¾ theway to the Moon and now switchthe torch on and the light will take1 second to hit the wall. The Moonis 1 ½ light seconds away. Now multiply 186,000 by 60 that’sthe number of seconds in a minute(it comes to about 11 millionmiles) so if you stood 11 millionmiles away it would take 1 minutefor the light to leave the torch andhit the wall. The Sun is about 8 minutes away, you are seeing the Sun as it was 8minutes ago. Now multiply thisnumber by another 60, thenumber of minutes in an hour. Youare now standing near Saturn; thelight you see from Saturn took 1hour to reach you. Ok, now multiply that number by24, that’s the number of hours in aday, you are now standing justoutside the solar system nearPluto. It now takes 1 whole day forthe light from the torch to reach

the wall. Now multiply that by 365, thenumber of days in a year. You arenow standing 1 light year from theEarth. Or 5,865,696,000,000 miles -that is almost 6 million, millionmiles! The closest star to the Sun isactually a group of three starscalled Alpha Centauri and is 4.5light years away. If you drew acircle around the Sun that was 10light years wide then there are lessthan 10 stars in that circle. Go outside tonight and you will see3 very bright stars directlyoverhead that make up thesummer triangle and are all moreor less the same brightness. Thebrightest of the three, Vega, is 25light years away. Altair is 16 lightyears but slightly fainter is Deneb -at over 1550 light years away it isone of the most remote starsvisible to the naked eye.But if you know exactly where tolook in the sky on a perfectly dark, clear night you may be able to spotthe Andromeda galaxy, a collectionof over 600 billion stars. TheAndromeda Galaxy is over 2 ½Million light years away. The lightthat you can see left theAndromeda galaxy before humanshad inhabited the Earth! And ‘out there’ are an infinitenumber of galaxies all containingbillions of other stars just like ourSun. Humbling isn’t it?

Brilliant!

Love your column.

Thank heavens thisnewspaper employsintelligent, experienced andwell-informed people to writeabout current affairs, unlikesome other local Englishlanguage papers. Recently, forinstance, a contributor to one'newspaper' was baffled as towhy, during recent WW2

memorial ceremonies, somePolish citizens were reluctantto display their eternal andsimpering gratitude to the'The Russians' for 'liberating'them from the 'evil of Hitler'sfascism'- no mention of Stalinhaving slaughtered more than100,000 Poles.

I'm not sure where somecolumnists source theirinformation but my GCSEstudents could probablyenlighten them on thesematters.

The first ever AndalucíaAnimal Network is to takeplace on Tuesday November24th and I thought yourreaders would be interestedto know about it.

There are numerousanimal charities in theMalaga Province dealingwith the appalling problemof our abused, abandonedand neglected animals. Some of the charities arewell-funded and supported;others are often singleindividuals who havesuddenly found they areacting as a refuge with littlemeans of help andassistance.

BUT... what if ALL theanimal charities and worthycauses came together andused their joint resourcesand numbers to influencelocal government andsuppliers? Just think what wecould achieve workingtogether...

Well that’s just what Nickand the team from Pepi’sand GPAR are trying toarrange with the support ofCHAIN – Charity for AnimalsIn Need. So on TuesdayNovember 24th, from 10amto 4pm, there will be the firstever event for the AndalucíaAnimal Network.

The aims of the event willbe to agree how we can co-ordinate our work tomaximise the benefits for allanimals. For example: usingour group purchasing powerto secure best prices foranimal food and servicesand lobbying localgovernment. We also hope tohave a guest speaker at theevent and it will be veryinformal, with all ideas andsuggestions encouraged.

The Hotel Molino deSaydo based at 29532Mollina, Malaga ( Junction142 off the A92 to Seville) hasvery kindly donated the useof the room and CHAIN willsupply the refreshments. The event is FREE to anyoneinvolved in working withanimals in the Andalucíaregion.

I don’t believe it !

Needing some new glasses Iwent to a well known chainof opticians, had the eyetests etc and decided topurchase all singing, dancing, reactolites withtitanium frames, at a cost of495 for two pairs. Wanting abit of a change I ordered onepair of half frame glasseswith lenses to go brown andone pair with a full framewith lenses to go black. Aftera 3 weeks wait we got a callinforming us the glasses hadarrived so off to the shop wewent.

On arrival the nicesalesman adjusted theframes a bit and everythinglooked OK until we walkedout of the shop with mewearing one of the newpairs. Fifty metres down theroad having walked intobright sunlight somethingserious seemed to be amiss.“Er... is it my imagination orare these lenses turningdifferent colours?” Well weweren’t quite sure so decidedto give them a bit longer inthe sun to see whathappened and by now it hadgone 2pm and the shop wasclosed for siesta so wedecided to lunch out and goback at 4pm.

Sitting at our lunch table Iput the glasses on the tablein bright sunlight and, sureenough, one lense hadturned black and one wasbrown! Out of my pocketcame the 2nd pair I hadpurchased and the same

thing happened with those. There was no way that thelenses had been swapped inthe wrong frames as they areentirely different shapes so,by now I am extremelymiffed to say the least andhaving to wait until 4pm togo back and complain wasreally getting me into VictorMeldrew mode.

4pm and I'm back at theshop. We never saw theoriginal guy that served usbut it must have been histwin brother in the shop ashe didn’t know who I was.“Name, sir?” he said. “Victorbl**dy Meldrew ,what cretincould make 2 pairs of glasseswith odd coloured lenses ? Atrained baboon fromLondon zoo could have donea better job” I replied. “Now,now sir” says the salesman,“I’m sure there’s been somesilly mistake, but why don’tyou take the glasses homewith you and just see if youcan get used to them” Towhich I replied, “If you thinkI am going to walk into mylocal bar with one black eyeand one brown eye you mustbe crazy.” Aaaargh! at thispoint Victor went intoexpletive overdrive andthrew the damn things backat him. We walked out of theshop in disgust. Two weekslater they had rectified thesituation but offered noexplanation as to whathappened.

You couldn’t make it upcould you?!

As the temperature dropsand the evenings draw

in, there is somethingpleasantly indulgent aboutwhiling away a couple ofhours by the ?re (or lesscommonly here, a radiator!)watching a good ?lm thatleaves you feeling all warmand cosy inside. Some ?lmsare de?nitely made to bewatched on Sundays.

One of my favourites isFried Green Tomatoes At

The Whistlestop Café (1991).I don’t know if it is thenostalgia, the storyline, theacting or the one-liners butsomething brings me backto watch this ?lm over andover. The ?lm @its betweenmodern times and the yearsof the US depression andtells the story of one family, their trials and tribulations, through the narrative of anold lady in a nursing home.

Kathy Bates is superb inher role as a bored,

middle-aged, conformisthousewife who becomes

inspired by the stories tochange her lot, dragging herbemused hubby along withher. Fried Green Tomatoesmanages to dally aroundissues such as poverty, homelessness, lesbianism, murder and racism withoutever causing o>ence or toomuch discomfort – no meanfeat in itself and while the?lm is de?nitely a grown upchick-@ick, there is enoughsubstance to keep everyonewatching. The mostsatisfying scene is the carpark crash where maturityand good insurance triumphover youthful speed andbeauty!

Of the same ilk is TheColor Purple (1986). A

little more serious in styleand outlook, this ?lm reallyshowcased the talents ofWhoopi Goldberg who wenton to win a Golden Globe forher portrayal of a youngblack woman in the early1900s. Goldberg’s characterCelie su>ers throughpoverty, abuse and the

forced removal of herchildren but ends uptriumphant as a successfulbusiness woman. An Oscarnominated performance byOprah Winfrey helps thestory along and a believableDanny Glover plays Celie’sabusive husband who ?nallycomes good and helps toreunite her with her childrenand sister. Then as the sun isgoing down on the ?nalscene and lumps are formingin throats across the livingroom, the ?lm fades out andanother Sunday afternoon isover.

Amore macho take on theSunday afternoon ?lm is

Legends of the Fall (1994).Anything with Brad Pitt isgoing to pull in the audiencebut this is not one of his mostquoted works, although itdid win an Oscar forcinematography. The story isset during the early years ofthe 20th century andrevolves around therelationships between threebrothers who all serve in a

Canadian Battalion in WW1and a woman that they allcome to love. As thebrothers nip in and out of thefamily ranch over the years, the attentions of the lovelySusannah, played by JuliaOrmond, are drawn fromone to another. The castincludes Aidan Quinn andAnthony Hopkins and theaction takes place in the

bloody trenches of WW1 andon the rolling plains ofMontana.

Having put pen to paper,or to be more accurate,

?nger to keyboard, I’msurprised to see that mythree favourite Sundayafternoon ?lms all havetimelines based around theearly part of the last century

and particularly the years ofdepression and hardship.Maybe it’s a nostalgia thing, maybe it’s escapism. Iwonder if in years to comepeople will be drawn to ?lmsabout our current globaleconomic crisis. Either way, Iknow it’s a great way to let aroast go down and honestly, the sofa was crying out forcompany.

The Prisoner of Azkaban isstill held by many to be thebest in the series but theHalf-Blood Prince is visuallystunning, and beautifullyshot and marries darknesswith comedic romanticgrowing pains of the pupilsat Hogwarts. Harrys

Memo from Madrid

Martin Delfín Writes for the Englishlanguage version of El Pais

Piecing together the puzzleAn elusive man

Former Defence Minister and currentSpeaker of the House, José Bono, seems to have been all over television

and the press in recent days, perhapsbecause as Speaker he delivered thecommemorative speech on the 31stanniversary of the Constitution onDecember 6th.

However, I’m sure I’m not alone inhoping that this new high profilemeans much more than that.

Bono, a practising Christian andlifelong Socialist, belongs to the “oldguard”. He was tipped to win the

vote for general secretary of the SocialistParty at the annual conference in 2000 –until the younger, more progressive bloodssprang a relatively unknown MP fromLeon out of the closet just days before thevote. He was José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, who went on to win by just nine votes. Hehasn’t stopped grinning since. Bono, beinga gentleman, accepted defeat gracefully, and Zapatero – not being so stupid as toforget the very wise advice to keep yourenemies close – offered him the DefenceMinistry after the 2004 election.

Bono has always professed loyalty toZapatero but not enough to stophim from suddenly resigning in

April 2006, “for personal reasons”. At thetime, he said he felt he had beenneglecting his family and wanted to devotemore time to them. However, it was anopen secret that he opposed Zapatero’speace negotiations with the Basqueterrorist group ETA. It was Bono who saidof ETA terrorist Ignacio De Juana Chaoswhen he went on hunger strike a few yearsback: “It’s a pity he didn’t go on hungerstrike and die before he killed those 25people.”

Zapatero tried to get him back to runfor Mayor of Madrid againstincumbent Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon

but Bono refused, probably becauseGallardon would be a very hard man tobeat and if Bono failed, it would probablybe the end of his political career. So Bonoheld out, and finally accepted the offer ofSpeaker of the House after the 2008election – his family problems apparentlyresolved.

He loves the job and said in atelevision interview last week thathe was very happy where he is.

While pooh-poohing the idea of everreturning to the “front line”, that is, as aminister or – why not – the party’scandidate for prime minister some day –he made it quite clear he had no intentionof ever giving up politics.

So where do we stand with Bono? Doeshe see himself as a possiblereplacement – as many people do –

for Zapatero should he become sounpopular that he will no longer be able tohang on to power? All I know is that at theend of the interview, I thought to myself:“It was a bad day for Spain when he lost toZapatero.”

So come on, Bono, do somethingabout it. A lot of people feel the sameway as I do.

More about that war

In his essay “Looking back on theSpanish War”, George Orwell admittedthat he had no direct evidence of the

atrocities committed by both sides but hesaid that what impressed him was that“atrocities are believed in solely on thegrounds of political predilection. Everyonebelieves in the atrocities of the enemy anddisbelieves in those of his own side, without ever bothering to examine theevidence.” Orwell’s greatest fear was thatFranco would destroy all the evidence ofhis own atrocities while exaggerating theother side’s. However, Orwell died in 1949,when Spain was still shrouded in darkness. He didn’t live to read Hugh Thomas’sbalanced and very well researched historyof the Spanish Civil War, which debunksmany of the myths and lies told by bothsides.

In fact, until I read that book I firmlybelieved what the people who hatedFranco told me about Garcia Lorca’s

death when I lived here in the 1960s – thathe had been put to death like a bull in theGranada bullring by the Guardia Civil. Itwasn’t totally unbelievable because theGuardia did use the bullrings in someplaces to hold prisoners of war because thelocal jails were too small, but most of thosewho were sentenced to die were taken outfor the “paseo” – that is, loaded onto a lorryand taken to a quiet spot outside of townand shot there.

It was only after I returned to London in1970 that I began to find out the truth –by reading Thomas’s book. It shook me

to the core because it made me realise thatleft-wingers, as I was then, were just asprone to believe any old lie as right-wingers are. It set my feet on the road toobjectivity, to the point where somepeople think I’m right-wing, when I’mreally just a disillusioned romantic whoonce believed in The Revolution.

Afew months after the terroristattacks on the World Trade Centreand the Pentagon, a young Spanish

woman telephoned her father to informhim that she was moving from Madrid toMorocco with her children. Her husband,a Muslim, had already migrated toCasablanca in October 2001. It was the lasttime the father heard or received any newsfrom her until a little more than a monthago. After one of the largest offensives evertaken this year by the Pakistani armyagainst Taliban insurgents in late October, evidence emerged that the 34-year-oldMadrid native is now perhaps involvedwith the insurgency alongside one of themost wanted terrorists on the planet.

In a home shattered by shelling inPakistan’s perilous South Waziristanregion, the army officers found the

Spanish passport of Raquel Burgos García.It was discovered next to the passportbelonging to Said Bahaji, a German ofMoroccan origin and one of the FBI’s mostwanted terrorists who is thought to havehelped organise the September 11th, 2001attacks in the United States. Nobody wasin the house when the army went in; theoccupants probably had no time to gathertheir belongings before fleeing.

In Hamburg during the 1990s, Saidshared an apartment with MohamedAtta, the notorious chief of the team of

suicide plotters. Said wanted to die withhis fellow fundamentalists but couldn’tobtain a US visa to remain beyond themaximum three-month stay afforded toEU citizens so he could train at flightschools with the others. His nameprominently figures in the USgovernment’s 9/11 Commission’s report.Just like Burgos whose father lost track ofher, law enforcement authorities lost trackof Said when he left for Karachi daysbefore the attack.

Burgos is well-known among Spanishintelligence officials. Her husband isAmer el Azizi, better known as

Othman al Andalusi, a nickname he wasgiven in the training camps in Afghanistanand Bosnia. He is considered to be Al

Qaeda’s point-man in Europe, and issuspected of having helped organise theMadrid train bombings of March 11th,2004 in which 191 died and more than2,000 were injured.

Raquel and Amer lived quietly nearLas Ventas bullring in Madrid. Theywere married at a mosque near

Madrid and had two children. Her fatherwould give the couple a €300 monthlyallowance because Amer didn’t hold downa steady job – he sometimes workedproviding translations at the Casa delLibro Arabe. However, authoritiesbelieved that his real job was capturingAfghan Mujahideen fighters and sendingthem off on suicide missions across theglobe.

Neighbours always rememberBurgos as being quiet and keepingto herself. She always dressed in

black and wore a burka but hardly spoketo anyone. Some intelligence analystsbelieve that the couple moved fromMorocco to Turkey; other reports claimthat Amer died in a suicide mission in Iraqa few years ago. And there is anotherversion floating around that Said andBurgos are now husband and wife.

On October 28th, Major GeneralAthar Abbas, spokesman for thePakistani army, showed a group of

international journalists the passports.“We don’t know when they came in or howlong they were in Pakistan,” he said.Amer’s passport wasn’t among them.

Burgos’ father has been interrogatedby Spanish police on more than oneoccasion but it is has been some

time, he said, since law enforcement hascontacted him. In an interview with ElPaís after the passports’ discovery madeinternational headlines he said sadly: “Ihaven’t heard from her in many years.Nobody even told me that they found herpassport in Pakistan.”

Last spring, Raquel’s mother died aftera lengthy illness. No one was able toinform the daughter.

From an advertisers’ point of view, putting an advert in a paper thatdoesn't grab the attention of thereader is a total waste of money.

You want your clients to pick up apaper that they will want to readfrom cover to cover over the courseof the week. A paper that they willpick up again and again, and seekout each week.

A paper in which they will see youradvert time and again, week afterweek, so that when they need yourkind of service, it is your name thatis at the forefront of their mind andthey will have the paper on theircoffee table or by the side of thesofa or bed.

The News is that paper.

Content:The News employs a professionalteam of writers, designers, andadvertising/accounts people withmany years of experience.

The aim is to bring you stories asthey happen, from around theworld and at home, features thatinform and political comment thatsparks debate.

Distribution:We understand that one of the mostimportant aspects of a publicationis distribution. A well- planneddistribution with enough papers tosupply the demand in the area isthe key; printing thousands ofpapers that get left in streets andbins is not our goal.

Why are we so good? Why does this matter? We know from talking to ourreaders that our paper is the onethat they find entertaining to read, and the one that they turn to tofind what they want. That meansyour advert is remembered so youwill get that call for your services orproducts, so it makes sense toadvertise with us and reach morethan 65.000 readers each week.

Why take a chance with otherpublications that either get used forsomething else, get thrown away ordon't get picked up in the firstplace?

The News is the place for yourbusiness.

What does this mean?
