WORDS: Reginald HeberMUSIC: John B. Dykes

HYMN OF CELEBRATION* "Come, Celebrate the Women"

Come, celebrate the women who brought the church to birth! The gentle revolution that shall transform the earth:whose faith was salt and leaven, whose hearts and minds were free, and this was their direction—to justice, joy and peace.

The teachers, saints and mothers who lived and died unsungkept safe the gospel story and taught it to the young;the Christ child Mary cradled, the living Word to be,was crucified for pleading this justice, joy and peace.

Daughters of the disciples, you weave the story still, the fabric of the future with warmth and love and skill, you make the bread of wholeness, the wine of harmony—and all shall share your feasting in justice, joy and peace.

CONFESSION

Christ our Lord invites to his table all who love him,who earnestly repent of their sinand seek to live in peace with one another. At this table we are made one with Christians all around the worldand with all those who came before us.As we approach this table of grace,Let us confess our sin before God and one another.

(In silence we confess our resistance to God’s vision and action)

Let us confess our sins before God

Before God, with the people of God,we confess to our brokenness;to the ways we wound our lives, the lives of othersand the life of the world.

May God forgive us,Christ renew us,and the Holy Spirit enable us to grow in love.Amen.

The peace of the Lord be always with you.And also with you.

Many grains were gathered together to make this bread, many grapes were mixed to fill this cup,so we, who are many and come from many places, are one in Christ.

What do we bring to Christ’s table? We bring breadmade from many people’s work;from an unjust world, where some have plenty and most go hungry.

At this table all are fed and no one is turned away. Thanks be to God.

What do we bring to Christ’s table? We bring the fruit of the vinemade from many people’s work;from an unjust world, where some live in luxury and most struggle to survive.

At this table all share the cup of pain and celebration. Thanks be to God.

Is God our Maker here?God is here.

Is Christ our Savior here?Christ is here.

Is the Holy Spirit here? The life–giving Spirit is in our midst.

And who are we?We are God’s people, redeemed by grace.

Let us pray.Loving God, we celebrate your amazing grace, seen throughout all the earth. From a wandering nomad,You created a new community. For a burdened peopleYou rose up those who could inspire. When your people rebelled,You sent your prophets.

We praise you for sending your Child,Christ Jesus, who comes in your name—Jesus is the word that brings salvation.Jesus is the hand that lifts up the lowly.Jesus is the way that leads to peace.

With the Holy Spirit as our guide,You lead us into truth,You quench hatred with mercy,You transform our strife and change our hearts.

7

And so with your people on earthand all the company of heaven,we gather around your tableto praise your nameas we sing with all creation:

(call and response)Holy, holy, holy Lord,God of power and love.

Heaven and earth are full of your gloryHosanna in the highest!Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the LordHosanna in the highest!

We praise you for you are the Sustainer of all creationthrough Jesus Christ, the Living Word, who, on the night when he was betrayed, took bread, gave thanks, broke itand gave it to His disciples, saying,‘Take this bread and eat it.This is my body given for you.Do this in remembrance of me.’

When the supper was over, he took the cup, gave thanks and gave it to them, saying:‘Drink from this, all of you. This is my blood of the new covenant, poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.Do this remembrance of me.’

In remembrance of all you have done in Jesuswe respond to your gracious invitation,as we proclaim the mystery of our saving faith:

(call and response)Dying, you destroyed our death.Rising, you restored our lives.Come, Lord Jesus!

Pour out your Holy Spirit on us gathered here, and on these gifts of bread and wine.Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ, that we may be for the world the body of Christ, redeemed by his blood.

8

By your Spirit make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world,

until Christ comes in final victory, and we feast at his heavenly banquet.

Through your Child Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in your holy Church, all honor and glory is yours, almighty God,now and forever.Amen.

1. God of grace and God of glory,on thy people pour thy power;crown thine ancient church's story;bring her bud to glorious flower.Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, for the facing of this hour, for the facing of this hour.

Hallelujah! God is with us.Hallelujah! we are not alone. With God's Spirit we are strong and courageous.God of grace and glory, we are yours.

2. Lo! the hosts of evil round usscorn your Christ, assail his ways!Fears and doubts too long have bound us;free our hearts to work and praise.Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, for the living of these days, for the living of these days.

CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 46 Rev. Adrienne Brewington

*OPENING HYMN “Great is Thy Faithfulness”

1. Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father; there is no shadow of turning with thee; thou changest not, thy compassions, they fail not; as thou hast been, thou forever wilt be.

Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see; all I have needed thy hand hath provided; great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

2. Summer and winter and springtime and harvest, sun, moon, and stars in their courses above join with all nature in manifold witness to thy great faithfulness, mercy, and love.

LITANY OF FAITH adapted from Hebrews 11 Rev. Kenneth KiefferNow faith is the assurance of things hoped for,the conviction of things not seen.

Indeed, by faith our ancestors received approval.

_______________________*All are invited to stand as able

MMemorial ServiceRev. St. Clair Samuel, Preacher

11

By faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain’s.By faith Noah, warned by God about events as yet unseen, respected the warning and built an ark to save his household.By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to set out,not knowing where he was going.

Indeed, by faith our ancestors received approval.

By faith Sarah conceived even though she was barren.By faith Jochebed hid her son, Moses, for three months after his birth.By faith Rahab did not perish with those who were disobedient.By faith Deborah and Jael combined forces to defeat the invader.

Indeed, by faith our ancestors received approval.

By faith the servants we remember todayresponded to God’s call and lived lives of serviceto Christ’s holy Church and the world.

Indeed, by faith our ancestors received approval.

Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God;and has indeed prepared a city for them. This morning, we celebrate their witness among us

All glory and praise be to God.

Aid Society to help edu-cate Black people newly

freed from slavery. Be-tween 1866 and 1882,the society established

more than 70 schools inthe U.S. South and

group—some createdby mergers with otherinstitutions—continue

to educate people fromall backgrounds.

The Ministerial Edu-cation Fund is the

church’s affirmationthat we continue toshare the responsi-bility for education

of our clergy. It isone of the seven ap-portioned funds that

enables UnitedMethodists to dotogether what no

church, district, orannual conference

could do alone.Through the MEF

and other funds, each individual, eachfamily, each congre-

gation gives a fairshare for the

church's work.

Our seminary stu-dents need the sup-port of their annual

conference, congre-gation, and the MEF,

which is a criticalpiece of the circle ofsupport for those onthe path to ordained

ministry.
