The 6th annual Macedon Ranges Sustainable Living Festival returns this year showcasing all that’s

happening in central Victoria on renewables, renovations, renegade gardening, and much more.

The festival is a great community event attracting over 1,000 visitors each year. This year the organisers hope to inspire individual acts of climate

leadership and to motivate visitors to consider the everyday things they can do to tackle climate change head on.

With a plethora of fantastic ideas and innovations on display from individuals, businesses and organisations, visitors are sure to discover loads of sustainable concepts to incorporate into their daily lives.

Macedon Ranges Sustainability Group President, Ralf Thesing explains; “Action to reduce your waste, permaculture gardening and growing your own food all contribute to a smaller carbon footprint,” and adds that “getting involved with community action, animal welfare and social justice groups helps spread the word, encouraging others to join in.”

“I think a lot of people are just not sure how all these things relate to action on climate change,” he continues, “but hopefully what visitors will take away from the Festival will help to demystify that notion and show that a lot of little things can add up, collectively, to serious action.”

Festival organisers are expecting a great turn out for the festival scheduled for the last day of summer, and encourage you to visit the outstanding selection stallholders, listen in to the many engaging speakers and eat your fill with the vegetarian feasting provided by MR VEG.

Australia Day honoursEvery year, on behalf of the Australia Day Council, Macedon Ranges Shire Council acknowledges and celebrates wonderful and inspiring members of our community. The awards ceremony was combined with an Australian Citizenship Ceremony, held on Australia Day January 26th at Kyneton Town Hall. Citizen of the Year is Adam Bourke

For 25 years, Adam Bourke, owner of Bourkies Bakehouse and maker of those award-winning vanilla slices, has made a huge contribution to Woodend’s community.

Not only employing over 40 locals, he generously donates money to community groups including junior football and netball, little athletics, senior football, Woodend Lions Club, and contributes financial support to events such as the Woodend Mother’s Day Classic fun run. He does all this without expecting acknowledgement of his generosity and contribution.

He is inspirational with a real passion for the local community.Young Citizen of the Year Award: Hayden Muir Also from Woodend, Hayden Muir is an inspirational and humble seventeen year old who, after witnessing a classmate having an epileptic seizure, decided to combine his love for cycling with his compassion and completed a 752km ride to Canberra to raise awareness and funds for the Epilepsy Foundation.

Through the ride, monthly barbecues and community talks, he has raised over $20,000 including a donation of $50 from PM Tony Abbott on the steps of Parliament House.

All monies raised are targeted for research and the Epilepsy Foundation’s help line.Community Event of the Year AwardO’Pig Newham Sculptural Pig Festival, Frances SpainTen life-sized fibreglass pig sculptures – decorated by prominent local artists and the Newham Primary School – were installed in key locations around Newham village and toured to local markets and towns two weeks before the O’Pig Newham Sculptural Pig Festival.

The festival celebrated the 125th anniversary of the Newham Bacon factory.

Celebrating art and communityWoodend’s Lions Art Show provides wonderful opportunities for artists, visitors and the wider local community.

It gives both new and experienced artists an arena to showcase and sell their work, while presenting a diverse selection of affordable, original artwork to buy for the home and business, or as a unique gift.

Most significantly, it is a major avenue for the Woodend Lions to raise funds to spend locally and contribute to a positive future for local residents.

This year marks the event’s 40th anniversary, and the club is working closely with members of the Macedon Ranges Art Trail to reinvigorate the show and celebrate the milestone.

A gala opening will be held at St Ambrose Hall on Friday, March 6. Those able to snap up one of the limited tickets will get the first look at the exhibition and chance to buy. Prize winners will also be announced.

The show will open to the public on Saturday, March 7 and run throughout the long weekend until 4pm Monday.

This year there will be a dedicated area for 3D art and photography in addition to the paintings displayed in the main hall. Visitors will be invited to vote for their favourite artwork in the People’s Choice Award.

Juniors and non-local artists are very welcome to enter and compete for a share of the prize pool which has been boosted to more than $3750.

Entry forms are available on the Lions website www.woodend.vic.lions.or.au and strictly due by February 20. A maximum of three entries per artist is allowed. Art must be delivered to St Ambrose Hall, Woodend on March 2, 3 & 4.

Celebrate Picnic at Hanging Rock’s 40 year anniversary

40 years later and the mystery lives onCelebrate Valentine’s Day and the 40th anniversary of Peter Weir’s ‘Picnic at Hanging Rock’ at the exclusive twilight viewing of the film on Saturday 14 February.Pack a picnic basket and blanket and enjoy the supernatural atmosphere of watching the film as the sun sets behind the Rock.

The Great Divide Trio Live at Woodend RSLMusic lovers in the Macedon Ranges will be pleased to know that the Woodend RSL will be offering some great live shows in the coming months. It has been some months since the regular monthly Friday blues nights finished up at the RSL last year. For those who enjoyed those events expect even greater things to come in February and March. For newcomers interested in having a dance they will be pleasantly surprised by the great acts on display early this year.

Few residents are aware that the Woodend RSL in Anslow Street has put on such good quality shows in the past and will soon do it again in fantastic style. Upcoming shows are booked for February 14th and March 28th with The Great Divide Trio a funk/blues outfit bursting with dynamic soulful and original music. The nights will open with Jarrod Shaw and Sarah Wilkinson performing stirring renditions of well known classic folk and blues songs, along with their own material. This seamless duo must be seen to be believed. Jarrod has been mentored through the years by family friend Geoff Achison (one of this countries most renowned guitarists) and has himself emerged into a great performer with a dedicated following. Together Jarrod and Sarah will afford us a vocal performance full of sweetness and subtlety.

The Great Divide Trio will complete the shows with a further two hours of their own brand of irresistible Soul/Funk and Blues for those keen to dance the night away! The band was formed nearly a year ago and is the latest project from Craig Madden a local guitarist and writer who has more than twenty years performing behind him. The band also features International Bassist Lukas Drobik from the Czech Republic known for his compositional prowess and showmanship. Those who have worked with Lukas or have seen him play know that he is one of Melbourne’s finest bass players. Finally, Tom Curry will join them on drums. Tom is a Macedon Ranges local who is known from the band Paper Jane and also from his time with The Shannon Noll Band.

So for those looking for a great night out, come out and have a boogie at only $8 entry.

Colouring Competition The New Woodend Star ran a Christmas colouring competition in the December 2014 edition. Published in the Business and Traders section of the bumper Christmas edition the competition was open for children in age groups up to 5 years, 6-9 years and 10-13 years of age.With over 100 entries received the task of the judging panel was made challenging, however a first, second and third place for each age group was determined. All entries were displayed over the holiday period in the shop window near Mitre 10 with thanks to Ivor Johnson. They also can get involved in bigger events like the Spring Racing Calendar, The Melbourne Show, Melbourne Fun Runs, the Melbourne Open & the Grand Prix to name a few.

St John’s Macedon Ranges division meets here in Woodend fortnightly on a Wednesday evening. We are only a small group & are actively seeking some new members.

Get ready for The Field TripYoung people living in Woodend are invited to join a new, innovative group called The Field Trip.

Described by founder Paul Kooperman as a ‘youth movement for the 21st Century’, The Field Trip is a weekly program aimed at 10-16 year olds.

Each week the kids are divided into groups according to their age group. The 10-12 year olds are called the Diggers, the Dreamers are aged 13-14 years, and the Doers are 15-16 years old. The meetings are run on Sunday afternoons by youth leaders aged 17-20.

Paul has created The Field Trip based on a unique model for engaging young people aged 17-20 to lead a weekly program for younger kids, for which they are paid.

It is based on four pillars – adventure, invention, initiative and unity.

At the weekly meetings, the groups plan activities. In 2015, The Field Trip will support and connect with a number of local events and activities such as Youth Week, local festivals, markets and fundraisers.

"This is a youth group to provide kids in the area much needed training and employment opportunities, unique to the Macedon Ranges," Paul said.“It offers paid employment for older kids and builds participant’s interests and skills so they become thinkers, creators, innovators and Australia’s next generation of leaders.”The Field Trip is run by a youth executive team, and is supported by local volunteers as adult mentors.Now is the time to register for The Field Trip with meetings due to start in Term 2 (April). A note from the Mayor Macedon Ranges Shire Council

Hi, For those of you who don't know, I have been elected Mayor. This is a position for 12 months, voted on in November each year by councillors.

It is a great honor to be entrusted with this extra responsibility and I hope everyone will be proud of how I represent the Shire.

We have had some fires in the Shire over Summer already and I want to remind you all to make sure you have a fire plan and keep your property as safe as possible by cleaning out gutters, cutting long grass and clearing up rubbish.

Summer is also a time when more people are cycling in and around our beautiful towns and villages.

Council has partnered with Bike Safe Macedon Ranges to promote bicycle safety for both cyclists and drivers, particularly with overtaking and rider visibility.

I am hoping this year will see many more initiatives to improve environmental outcomes for the Shire and also save us money in the long term.

We have a Green team at council, putting into practice such initiatives within council offices, my personal favorite being the introduction of Worm Farms, to reduce organic waste going to Landfill. This may seem small, but if everyone does something small to help, it results in a big change. I'm looking forward to council leading the way.

Our local libraries have become important hubs in their communities and been well supported this year by Councils and State Government. However this has not always been the case and overseas news is not encouraging – the UK lost 49 libraries in 2014. So having a strong community voice for our libraries in considering options for future directions is vital. With your help we could do more, so please join us! Membership is free.

Rotary Classic Motorcycle & Car ShowGisborne Steam Park came alive with the roar of motorbikes and cars on 23rd November for the first Rotary Club of Gisborne Classic Motorcycle and Car Show.

Approximately 150 motorbikes and 70 cars of all types were on show to support the event and a fine sunny day attracted a big crowd of spectators from around the district and beyond.

However this was not just a day for the petrol heads! Animal farm,steam train rides, a Highland Pipe Band and numerous food and other vendors provided something for the whole family.

Event organiser Stuart Bonnington from Gisborne Rotary was delighted with the event: “The response from both the public and exhibitors was fantastic and we hope to plan a bigger and better show in 2015!” he said.

SES was on hand to help with the major role in parking vehicles and the CFA held demonstrations in fire control.

Rotary members and families turned out in force to help on the day and all proceeds contributed to Rotary charities.

Macedon Ranges and District Motor Club will be staging its 28th Annual Picnic at Hanging Rock on Sunday 8th February.

The event is a family picnic day where enthusiasts can bring their classic, veteran, vintage, hotrods and special interest vehicles along and share their passion with other enthusiasts and the general viewing public. The event started out as a small club event and has now become the largest single day classic motoring event in Victoria and attracts more than 2600 display entrants and many more spectators.

There is entertainment for the children including the ever popular animal farm, displays from sponsors, motoring celebrities, trade stands, thousands of vehicles to view, along with commemorative t-shirts and badges for sale.

The event is held at the world famous Hanging Rock Reserve. Apart from the excellent display of vehicles, visitors are able to climb the ‘Rock’, as well as enjoy a family picnic and great day out.

New turf at Gilbert Gordon OvalThe $800,000 Gilbert Gordon Oval reconstruction project is well underway, with the majority of sub-surface works now complete and new turf scheduled to be laid by mid-February.

It is very important that residents keep off the new

ground surface until October 2015 to allow the grass to grow and roots to establish.

Local user groups are working with Council to help ensure the ground is protected before it is ready for play in time for round one of the Woodend Cricket Club summer 15/16 season.

Works completed to date include a complete overhaul on the grounds drainage and recycled water irrigation system. The brand new grass surface will help address the wet and boggy conditions the ground has experienced for a number of years in winter. It will mean that the oval can be played on all year round.Council thanks the community and local sporting groups for their patience and support for this important project which will significantly improve this facility for future generations.

Me & My BrotherA travelling exhibition of photographic portraits of people with disability and their siblings from the Macedon Ranges region is coming to Woodend in February.

The “Me and My Brother” portraits by local photographers Deborah Mullins and Kim Selby will be on display at the Chamber Art & Coffee House, 80 High Street, Woodend from 4-22 February.

The exhibition has already had a popular run in Kyneton – where it was on display in the reception area of Council’s offices for all of December – and at the Gisborne Library in January. It’s final showing will be the Romsey Library from 25 February to 28 March 2015.

The book “Me and My Brother: Stories of Special Siblings in the Macedon Ranges” by local author Angela Cox tells the stories of the featured siblings sets in words and photographs. Copies can be purchased from the Chamber Art & Coffee House and Windarring’s Amaze ‘n’ Herbs at 58 Mollison Street, Kyneton or online at www.specialstories.com.au. All proceeds to local disability service providers.

Your health care under threat The Federal Government is making unprecedented changes to the funding of your health care in General Practice.

From January 2015, the first of a range of changes will severely impact on General Practice services. Your Medicare rebate will be reduced and/or frozen for four years. Other changes will impact on the way we currently offer multidisciplinary services. People with chronic diseases, who see GPs most frequently, will be hit the hardest.

We feel these extreme changes are short-sighted. General Practice (primary care) is what keeps people out of hospital where the costs are so much higher. The ultimate result, therefore, is that overall, healthcare costs will increase.

Brooke Street Medical Centre has strenuously opposed these changes by writing to the Federal Minister for Health, The Honourable Ms Sussan Ley and various other Members of Parliament and Senators.

The government is more likely to listen if people voice their concerns.

Monash medical students We also welcome our new group of Monash University 4th year medical students who join the Practice in February. The students are here for one semester where they will consult in general practice and also participate in sessions with a range of nursing and allied health service providers. Where patients consent, they are first seen by a student followed by a consultation with the GP and the student assisting. These appointments help medical students learn such things as how to take a history, diagnose and treat patients. Please let our receptionists know if you would prefer not to be seen by a student.

Farewell Registrars We sadly farewell Doctors Sanjeev Rajagopalan and Annette Price who have been with us for the past year. Annette and Sanjeev are GP Registrars (qualified doctors doing post-graduate studies in General Practice). They will now proceed to other rural placements compulsory for their General Practice training.

The good news is: Annette and Sanjeev will return to Brooke Street Medical Centre in August.

Heat related illnesses

High temperatures can put people at risk for heat related illnesses, which at their extreme can be life threatening. Anyone can be affected by heat however some are more at risk eg. the elderly, young babies and those with existing medical conditions. To prevent heat related illness, take a range of precautions on hot days: Keep as cool as possible. Stay in an air

conditioned or a cool, well-ventilated place If outdoors, stay in shaded areas Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol. Seek

GP advice if you are on restricted fluid intake Limit physical activity / exertion Have cool showers or baths or use wet cloths

to help cool the body downKeep an eye out for those who are at risk – eg. the elderly who live alone. Remember that people and pets should not be left in parked cars. Seek medical advice for heat related illnesses however one type, heat stroke, is a medical emergency. Such things as confusion, red dry skin, lack of coordination, difficulty breathing, fitting or collapse and unconsciousness may occur. Call 000 for ambulance immediately.

New year, new coursesWas your New Year’s resolution to learn something new? Do something for you? Or get active? If so, Woodend Neighbourhood House has something for you.

We’re excited to be offering a range of new classes including; local artist Kate Nolan’s Botanical Illustration, Microsoft Excel, tatting (a form of lace making), kids and teens yoga and children’s sewing.

Hip hop, parkour and pizza? YEP! Macedon Ranges Shire Council is set to launch YEP! 2015 –a series of youth engagement programs and events that offer a safe and inclusive environment for young people aged between 12–25 years in the Macedon Ranges.

The activities kick off on Wednesday 11 February at the Gisborne Youth Space with a YEP! Chill and games session to be held from 4pm–6pm. A similar session will be held at the Kyneton Youth Space on Thursday 12 February from 4pm–6pm.

Also on Thursday 12 February, young people diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) will have the opportunity to attend a free barbecue at the specialist youth space in Woodend from 4pm–6pm. Registration is required. Contact Fiona LeNepveu, Cobaw Community Health on 5421 1666.

There are many other activities planned during Term 1, including hip hop and breakdance sessions, pizza making, parkour workshops and digital DJ sessions.

The YEP! 2015 program will also partner with the local MITS (Music In The Sticks) committee to plan two major skate, BMX, scooter and music events to be held during the Easter school holidays in Romsey and Woodend.

Family fun with WoodyPlaygroup is back for 2015 with a number of new families, and a new-look committee.

After four years as president of the Woodend Playgroup committee, Faye Cormick stood down at the AGM held in December and we are very pleased that Libby Nuttall has taken over the reins. Felicity Mace, Amanda Knight and Rowena Glenister return to the committee while the other eight members are new.

The committee is vital for the smooth running of playgroup. Among its list of many duties, the committee coordinates fundraising events that run with help from other playgroup members, organises monthly activities, maintains the premises located at 45 Forest St in Woodend, and looks after enrolments.

Libby said the new committee is looking forward to getting started on a number of major projects, events and activities for the year.

“Our aim is to make Woodend Playgroup the best it can be and provide for its future,” she said.

“This year our major fundraiser will be a trivia night held on Saturday 1 August, along with a number of cake and soup stalls.

“There are plenty of opportunities for playgroup families and local businesses to get involved and support playgroup.”

Woodend Playgroup is well entrenched in the local community. It celebrated its 35-year milestone last year and was named Victorian Playgroup of the Year for 2013.

More than 135 families have already enrolled to attend sessions that are spread throughout every day of the week.

“Playgroup is such a vital service to the region, as it’s often the first place mums make friends when they have moved into the area or have just had baby,” Libby said.

“These friendships can last a lifetime, both for the mums and the kids.”

Woodend Playgroup is an inclusive, fun centre that caters for all local families living in the area with children aged 0-5 years.

Seriously talented artists set to entertain Macedon Ranges residents will get a taste of Council’s 2015 art and culture season program at a free event at the Kyneton Town Hall on Friday 6 February, with a 25% discount on tickets purchased on the night.

Starting at 5pm, patrons will be treated to door prizes and free, locally-sourced wines, ciders and coffee. Entertainment will be provided by some of this year's artists.

Mayor, Cr Jennifer Anderson said that astonishing talent and amazing stories will again be featured in this year’s program.

“Council has programmed over twenty different events this year as a way for people to get involved in the arts and connect with their community.

“Several outstanding performers are heading our way to share their skills in music, dance, drama, comedy, burlesque cabaret and family entertainment.

“It's an opportunity to experience many acts that might otherwise only be seen in major cities, without the stress of travel, and an ability to dine out in our local restaurants and visit places closer to home.

“There are also exhibitions at the Kyneton Museum on topics ranging from women’s fashion to the intriguing world of body adornment,” she said.

Exhibitions at the Kyneton Museum will include educational programs and holiday activities. Teachers are encouraged to explore what’s on offer in the way of master classes and student workshops with visiting artists and artisans.

Cr Anderson said that the season launch was the only way to get a preview of the program and purchase tickets at a heavily discounted rate.

“Be the first to know what’s coming to town this year, and plan your entertainment for the whole year by taking advantage of the 25% discount on tickets.

"It is sure to be a great event. At last year's launch, the opening speeches had to compete with the horror of the scariest mime I have ever seen! Come along and get a taste of the 2015 season for yourself,” said Cr Anderson.

Considering Divorce?

Consider this … As confirmed by recent taxation pronouncements, money or other assets transferred out of a company as part of a divorce settlement are treated as a dividend and will have tax consequences to the recipient.

Case Study

Jack and Jill are divorcing and run a company worth $2 million. This is their only matrimonial asset. Jack is the sole director and shareholder. The Family Court Order requires Jill to be paid $1 million from the company.

The company raises $1 million in cash through borrowing and pays it to Jill. Jack retains control of the company as part of the settlement.

Jill is deemed to have received a dividend of $1 million and tax is payable at marginal rates. Franking credits may be attached at the discretion of the director.

Had the settlement been by way of transferring property to Jill this would still represent a dividend to Jill. There would also be Capital Gains Tax (CGT) consequences.

This is one of the many financial issues to consider during a divorce. Be sure you get appropriate advice when considering any settlement.

Bluelight donates $700 to local suicide prevention initiative The Macedon Ranges Bluelight committee, as part of its ongoing commitment to young people and community, has donated $700 to Macedon Ranges Shire Council’s Live4Life program.

“We hope that this goes some way towards assisting such a worthwhile program for the young people of the Macedon Ranges,” said Senior Constable Joe Grbac, Youth Resource Officer for Victoria Police; a partner organisation in the Live4Life program.

Live4Life is a mental health promotion initiative targeting young people in the Macedon Ranges. It was developed in 2009 as a community-wide response to a reported increase in depression, anxiety, self-harm and suicide in the Macedon Ranges Shire. Live4Life enacts a coordinated, collaborative local community response to youth mental health.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council Mayor, Cr Jennifer Anderson said, “Donations to Live4Life are always welcome and we are extremely grateful for the Macedon Ranges Bluelight’s ongoing support and interest in the work we do.

“The funds will go towards the delivery of Teen Mental Health First Aid Training to year eleven students at Kyneton Secondary College,” she said.

Free training for Macedon Ranges parents Macedon Ranges parents with children of secondary school age can learn vital skills to identify and address youth mental health issues by attending a free course in 2015 run by Macedon Ranges Shire Council.

The fully accredited Youth Mental Health First Aid course teaches adults how to assist a young person that might be developing a mental health problem such as anxiety, depression, psychosis, eating disorders. or alcohol and other drugs issues. It also provides participants with steps to take if they think a young person is in a mental health crisis or suicidal.

The 14-hour course is being offered in January, March, May, June, July and October. Dates, times and locations can be found on Council’s website, mrsc.vic.gov.au/live4life.

Mayor, Cr Jennifer Anderson encourages all residents with a young person in secondary school in the shire to enrol in one of these valuable courses.

“We all want the Macedon Ranges to be a safe and healthy place to live, especially for our young people.

“We’ve already trained over 450 people in our shire–that’s 450 people who know what to do if a young person is struggling or something doesn’t seem right,” she says.

This is the fourth year that the course is being offered in the shire as part of the award-winning Live4Life mental health initiative.

Music in the ChurchesKyneton Music Festival 2015 Saturday February 21 This year’s ‘Music in the Churches’ concerts is a series of four concerts. The concerts include feature performances from two world acclaimed musicians: Mary Doumany and Roesy. The venues will be St Paul’s Anglican Church (Reception Hall) Kyneton and the Uniting Church, Kyneton.

Music in the Churches is designed for those music lovers who prefer their music a little softer, slower and more traditional. This program is enormously diverse and has something for everyone. The free concerts begin at 11am and conclude at 3pm. • Mary Doumany: 2pm at St Paul’s Anglican Church

(Reception Hall) One of the most original voices in the Australian arts community, Mary Doumany is a cross-arts practitioner renowned as a composer, harpist and singer, and is rapidly earning a reputation as a creator of unique and innovative works that encompass music, text and visuals.

• Roesy:1pm at Uniting Church, Kyneton. Roesy, fromBirr, County Offaly, is an Irish singer-songwriter. Through his career he has shared the stage with Bert Jansch, Ron Sexsmith, Paul Brady, Billy Bragg, John Martyn, Davy Spillane, Donovan, Shane MacGowan, fellow Offaly musicians Mundy and Dan Foley, plus celebrated Irish author Paul Durcan.

• Jose and the Coffee Mugs: 12 noon at Kyneton BaptistChurch. A quartet of local guys playing the infectious music in the style of the great Django Reinhardt. The band is comprised of two acoustic guitars, and acoustic bass guitar and drum kit. This variety of swing music is easy on the ears and provokes an endearing foot-tapping, head-nodding or finger-clicking action. Their music is free, elegant and slick, perhaps a reflection on the boys themselves.

• Three's a Crowd, 11am at Our Lady of the RosaryMalcolm Cole (piano), Kristen Leich (Soprano) and Henry Vyhnal (violin) will play a program of light classical pieces and other popular music in concert especially for the residents of the aged care centres in and around Kyneton.

Scottish DancingMacedon Ranges Scottish Country Dancers begin another year of dancing on February 5th. We meet every Thursday afternoon from 1pm - 3pm at Newham Mechanics Institute, to have loads of fun while we dance away stress and tension and exercise our bodies and minds.

Dances are usually performed in “Sets” of 6 or 8 people and all dances are walked through first before we actually dance.

No matter if you are a beginner or an experienced dancer, young or just young at heart, we would like to invite you to join us Thursday afternoons and get those feet tapping to the music.

Start Run program returnsMacedon Ranges Running Club continues to offer our hugly popular Start Running Group program commencing this first week of February.

This course will provide training to a non runner with basic fitness to run 5km non stop in eight weeks PLUS you can then choose to continue and complete the 10 km distance over an additional five weeks (13 weeks in total to complete the 10 km distance non stop).

If you have ever wondered if you could run or just want to get back into running – this is the opportunity you have been waiting for!

Dive into the Aquathon SeriesIf you enjoy running or swimming, or both, then don’t miss this year’s Macedon Ranges Aquathon Series happening in Woodend, Lancefield, Kyneton and Gisborne.

These events are a great way to set yourself a fitness goal and have fun. The Woodend event will take place on 22 February, with the other three events being hosted in Lancefield, Kyneton and Gisborne.

While the courses are slightly different at each venue, they offer something for everyone; a long course for those who like a challenge, a short course, and a mini event for those who just want to ‘have a go’.

The event is open to all age groups and abilities, with a mini, short and long course and the option to enter individually or as part of a team. Competitors who enter three or more races will be in the running to become the first Macedon Ranges Aquathon Series Champion.

The next event will be held at Woodend Outdoor Pool on 22 February. Kyneton Toyota Sports and Aquatic Centre will host their 8th annual event on 15 March, and the Gisborne Aquatic Centre will host theirs on 12 April, coinciding with their 10th birthday.

Age categories exist for both the short and long courses. All mini course participants will receive a medal, certificate and voucher for a sundae from Saltan Pepper restaurant, Romsey.

New Share the Road SignsMacedon Ranges Shire Council has added a Share the Road message to the cyclist signage on Shire roads. Bike Safe Macedon Ranges requested the signage and we are very grateful to the Shire and its officers for erecting these signs.

All road users have a responsibility to not only obey the road rules but courtesy and respect for each other goes

a long way to making our roads safer. Sharing the roads is a two way street. We as cyclists are vulnerable road users and ask motorists to Pass us with Care as if we are a motor vehicle, giving us at least 1 metre in slow moving traffic and a minimum of 1.5 metres at higher speeds.

Motorists need cyclists to be clearly visible on the roads. Cyclists wearing

black and dark colours are much harder to see against black bitumen and against the shadows from trees along the road. Please ensure for your own safety and that of all road users that you are clearly visible day and night. Flashing lights make a big difference in the day time as well as lighting you up at night.

Badminton in KynetonBadminton is a great family sport for all ages. Last year we had players from 12 to 70 years of age.

The Kyneton Badminton Association hold competition every Monday night from 7:00pm at the Kyneton Toyota Sports and Aquatic Centre, Victoria Street, Kyneton. A practice night will be held on 2nd February with competition beginning on 9th February.

Indoor soccer season commences in KynetonDo you want to get fit, have fun and make new friends? A new season of Indoor Soccer is beginning in February 2015 at the Kyneton Toyota Sports and Aquatic Centre.

This year’s season is an open competition which means that teams can be made up of players of any gender. For example teams can be all female, all male or a combination.

If you don’t have your own team, we can arrange a team for you to join. Teams require a minimum of five players, however we recommend teams have two or three extra players.

Games are played on Wednesdays from 6.30pm. The cost is $16 per player for season registration and $42.50 per team per game. This season will be kicking off early February with finals expected to be held in late May.

Fire Danger Period reminderVictoria has experienced large amounts of rainfall and lower than normal temperatures over past weeks. However we are still in the Fire Danger Period with restrictions remaining in force right across the state.

Loddon Mallee Regional Controller Mark Gilmore said “Although we have received significant rain, areas remain extremely dry and still pose a fire risk. We want to remind people that we are now in the middle of summer and are sure to see a return of higher temperatures and Fire Danger Ratings at the higher end of the scale. Along with this Total Fire Ban days may be declared as conditions worsen.”

He also said “Preventing fires is something that every member of the community should see as their responsibility” and went on to add that “Fire Danger Periods are based on local conditions and take into account fuel moisture, fuel loads, grassland curing, weather and rainfall.”

Mr Gilmore went on to say “Members of the community need to remember that burning off cannot be carried out under any circumstances during the Fire Danger Period (FDP) and property owners and works managers are reminded that they need to apply for any permits well in advance if they are planning to carry out essential work during the Fire Danger Period.”

Inspector Colin Renton from Victoria Police also emphasised that “Police are called to all fires during the Fire Danger Period and will investigate and prosecute all breaches of the law.”

He added “There has been a marked spike in people burning off rubbish since the recent rain event and police have prosecuted a number of property owners as a result. Any person lighting a fire without a written permit or causing a fire through failing to comply with permit conditions will be prosecuted”.

The Fire Danger Period means fires cannot be lit in the open air without a written permit from the CFA.• Schedule 13 Permit:This permit allows you to burn-off grass, weeds, or other

vegetation during the Fire Danger Period. • Schedule 14 PermitThis permit applies to other uses of fire not covered by

Schedule 13, such as industrial burning or cutting, or burning deceased stock.

Note that both Schedule 13 and Schedule 14 permits become invalid on days of Total Fire Bans.

Each summer Crime Stoppers Victoria partners with emergency services to raise awareness and encourage reporting of bushfire arson through the Zero Tolerance campaign. Arson is attributed as being the cause of 50 percent of all bushfires across the country, with 1444 suspicious fires and almost 400 people charged for arson-related offences in Victoria during the 2013-2014 bushfire season.

Deliberate and reckless fires can threaten lives and property, and tie up valuable emergency service resources, leaving other areas of the state vulnerable, particularly on extreme and code red fire days.

CFA North West Region Community Education Coordinator Paul Tangey urged all residents to “Check the fire danger rating in their weather district every day over summer and especially when travelling to other parts of the state.”

He went on to say “The Total Fire Ban Districts map and a copy of the Can I Can’t I brochure which explains what is and is not permitted both during the fire danger period and on days of total fire ban, are two of the best sources of information you should have. “

Mr Tangey made the comment “Don’t forget if you have seen something or know something then say something by contacting Crime Stoppers confidentially on 1800 333 000.”

As a final statement Mr Gilmore remarked that “Fire restrictions remain in force for a very good reason – to prevent fires from starting. If you are unsure then please contact the CFA or your local council.”

When bushfire burns, don’t expect a truck at every doorIf a bushfire is burning out of control, CFA fire fighters must concentrate their efforts on stopping the fire. There may not be enough fire trucks and fire fighters to defend every home.

In fact, there are around 42,000 people living in the Macedon Ranges, serviced by eight CFA Brigades with a total of only 25 fire fighting trucks and support vehicles. You do the math!

“CFA fire fighters will be doing everything they can, to prevent injury to people and damage to property, during a bushfire. But you should never expect a fire truck to personally protect your home, ” Woodend CFA Captain Mick Christie said.

“Often the first warning you receive of a fire approaching your property is smoke or flames. CFA fire fighters can’t knock on every door to give a personal warning. Don’t be caught out. Prepare in advance and you can enjoy living in a bushland setting, knowing you have a well thought out bushfire survival plan” Captain Christie said.

To get ready for a bushfire, people in areas of high fire risk are advised to prepare a Bushfire Survival Plan. This is a well thought out plan about how you will prepare and respond to a fire in your area.

A part of this plan is deciding if you are going to leave early, before a fire threatens or road travel become hazardous, or stay and defend your home. Whatever your choice you need to spend a decent amount of time preparing you and your family. Five minute chats while watching the TV are not enough.

When the risk of bushfire is high, CFA will be on full alert but it isn't possible to give personal warnings to every home. Listen to your local ABC radio. Keep in contact with your neighbours. And watch for smoke.
