ThemanagementofmountainforesthabitattypesinNatura2000sites:experienceandcasestudiesfromtheContinentalBiogeographicalregion

Inthecourseofrecentyears,themanagementofmountainforesthabitattypeshasbecomeamorechallengingpriorityformanagingauthoritiesatEuropeanlevel.Inparticular,intheContinentalregion,managersarebeingconfrontedwithseveralissues,mainlyrelatedtobarkbeetleinfestations,waterregimemaintenanceandrestorationand,inmanycases,alsotheneedtoplanandstructurecrossbordercooperationregimes.Inaddition,consideringthat
significantpartsofmountainareasarealsodesignatedbynationallegislationfortheprotectionofnaturalprocesses,thisaddsmorecomplexitiesforharmonizingplans,settingconservationobjectivesandfortheimplementationofconservationmeasures.
ThisseminarisproposedasanetworkingeventthatbringsforwardthediscussionstartedinthecourseoftheContinentalBiogeographicalSeminarthattookplaceinLuxemburginJune2015.
OutlineoftheNetworkingEvent
EUROPARC,incooperationwiththeŠumavaNationalPark(CZ),andwiththesupportoftheEUROPARCCentralEasternEuropeSection,willorganiseaNetworkingSeminartoaddressissuesrelatedwiththemanagementofMountainForestHabitatsintheContinentalRegion.Thetwodaysseminar,addressedtomanagers,expertsandauthoritieswithresponsibilitiesforsitemanagement,willgivetheopportunitytoexchangepracticalexperienceinmanagementofmountainforestsaspartofNatura2000sites.Newscientificfindingswillbepresented,contributingtoimprovetheunderstandingofnaturalprocessesinmountainforestsintheContinentalregion.
Thelong-lastingexperienceoftheŠumavaNationalParkinthemanagementofMountainforest,togetherwiththefruitfulcrossbordercooperationestablishedwiththeBavarianForestNationalPark,willofferanimportantbaselineforaconstructivelearningexchangeamongparticipants.Duringthecourseoftheseminarcasestudieswillbepresentedfocusingonrestorationofwaterregime,barkbeetlemanagement,naturebasedforestmanagementandimpactofthosemeasuresonNatura2000sitesandtheirtargets.AsitevisittotheBohemianforestwillcontributetomaintainastrongconnectionbetweentheoryandpracticefortheeffectivemanagementofmountainforesthabitats.
