TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In many parish churches, more rarely in monastery churches and cathedrals, the taber-nacle with the Blessed Sacrament is visible from a doorway or aisle in the church. Normally, a person is to give the proper sign of reverence, a genuflection, when passing in proximity to the tabernacle. The word “genuflect” comes from Latin roots meaning bending (or flexing) the knee. A common-sense exception to the rule is for a sacristan who is taking care of the church and can’t be genuflecting every thirty seconds during a vacuum run. Also excepted are persons in procession entrusted with im-portant symbols of the Lord’s presence. So, a crossbearer or a minister carrying the Gospel book, or ministers on their way to their Com-munion stations do not genuflect. For everyone else, the usual sign of reverence for the Lord’s presence in the Blessed Sacrament is to genu-flect on the right knee. The oldest form of reverence during prayer in our tradition is standing; kneeling or genu-flecting is a sign borrowed from old civic prac-tice. The posture of kneeling, even on one knee, is a sign of submission. Servants would take this position before their masters in the ancient world. It said: I’m not running away, I’m yours, I’m here for you. This is what your genu-flection says when you enter a Catholic church where the place of reservation of the Blessed Sacrament is visible to you: I’m yours. —Rev. James Field, © Copyright, J. S. REMEMBERING OUR MOTHERS While today is not a “holy day”, it is obviously, a special day to re-
member our mothers, whether living or de-ceased. May God bless all mothers for shar-ing God’s wonderful gift of life with us. THANKS FOR THE GREAT SHOW OF SUPPORT If you were here for Mass on the week-end of April 29-30, you know that the Little Sisters of the Poor were with us seeking our help for the great work that they do. I received a letter from their superior, Sister Margaret Mary, thanking us for our re-sponse, portions of which I quote:
“Dear Father Nichols; It was a joy for the Little Sisters of the Poor to be with the parishioners of your Parish this past weekend. We asked you to share in our joy of caring for the aged poor living at our Home by welcoming us to stand at the doors of your church with our collecting baskets after Mass. Through the generosity of you and your parish-ioners we have received $2,801.00. Thank you for your collaboration in our mission! With your help we are able to provide housing, food, healthcare, friendship, and most importantly, love for our Residents. Please convey our sincere gratitude to everyone at your parish for partnering with us in our mission! All funds collected this past weekend will be used to continue our tradition of loving care to the elderly poor of Pittsburgh. May God bless you and all in your parish. May... is the month that is especially dedicated to the Blessed Mother Mary. St. Stanislaus Church is honor-ing the Mother of God with a May altar. All parishioners and visitors are invited to bring fresh flowers in a vase to place on the May altar in honor or in memory of a loved one. Vases will be saved and available at the end of the month for you to retrieve. Thank you.
NEXT WEEKEND - SPECIAL COLLECTION Next weekend, May 13-14, every par-ish in the USA will participate in a national collection for the Trinity Dome to complete the National Shrine of the Immaculate Con-ception in Washington, D.C. before its’ 100th anniversary. You may ask why you are invited to help pay for the renovation of the dome of that beautiful shrine in Washington, D.C. First of all, the national shrine is our nation’s shrine in honor of our Blessed Mother, pa-troness of the United States. Secondly, it is a great way for all American Catholics to join together to honor Mary and help restore the beautiful dome of the largest church in the U. S. So, two thoughts on all of this: If you are able to contribute to this venture and would like to do so, you may simply contrib-ute to this second collection. Secondly, I might suggest that if you are ever in Washington, D.C. to stop and visit the National Shrine of the Immaculate Con-ception.
