Introduction The objective of this document is to provide the user with guidance when using the MOVie 440. This guide is not intended to replace the MOVie user Manual, which contains detailed technical, and functional, descriptions omitted from this document.
1 General Description The Multi-purpose Reader is a small portable handheld device which is able to read and verify information on Mifare Classic or DESFire Oyster cards.
2 Detailed Hardware Description
2.1 Real Time Clock
The reader has been fitted with an internal real-time-clock (RTC) which will keep track of date and time to an accuracy of ± 5 seconds per month. It has been fitted with its own battery (CR1616 Li coin cell) which will provide a service life in excess of 10 years. The RTC hour should be set in GMT, -1 hour during summer, so that the reader can automatically adjust for the GMTBST and BSTGMT changeovers.
2.2 Display
The reader is fitted with a 128 x 64 pixel full graphics LCD module. The display has electronic contrast adjustment and displays 4 lines of 16 characters. There is also backlighting available on the display. This is activated by holding down the READ key for 3 seconds when turning on the unit. After the backlight is enabled it will remain on for 30 seconds before being turned off. Subsequently pressing any key will put the backlight on for a further 30 seconds. The backlighting can be disabled by switching the device off. During idle operation the display will show the date, time, mode, zones and the charge level of the battery.
4
The unit has 3 LED’s which will be used to indicate a valid (green), invalid (red) or operator decision required (amber) card state.
2.3 Keyboard
The front of the unit will have a total of 4 keys (buttons), which will be labelled Read, Next, Info, Last. The Read button when pressed will also act as a Power on button if the unit is switched off (standby).
2.4 Battery
The unit can only be charged by inserting the unit into the cradle and connecting an external 5Vdc mains supply or a USB host. The typical recharge time is about 3-4 hours. The unit will automatically switch off when the battery voltage reaches 3.2V and a “LOW BATTERY” warning is shown before switch off. This is to ensure no permanent damage is done to the battery cell (deep discharge). In this state the battery needs to be charged first before it can be used again To ensure maximum battery life the MOVie reader will automatically switch of after 2 hours of inactivity. In switched off state the unit will continue to keep date and time. Activation (switch on) of the unit is achieved by pressing the “Read” button. The unit has been designed to perform a minimum of 1000 Mifare Oyster card read / verification cycles on a fully charged battery.
2.5 Battery Charger (Single or Multiple cradle)
To recharge the internal Li+ battery you connect an approved mains adapter power supply to the 1.3mm socket in the cradle (centre pin positive) with a rating of 5Vdc @ 500mA (min). A complete recharge cycle will take around 3-4 hrs. The charging circuitry will automatically stop charging when the battery is full. Charging of the battery is indicated on the display by a charging symbol: In addition the green light will flash while charging and will remain off when fully charged. The weight of the unit is 140gm. This includes the Li+ battery The battery may also be charged by connecting the USB lead to a PC. In this situation the red LED on the MOVie may flash and the screen will display the device hardware number.

2.6 Taking care of the MOVie 440
Care should be taken when handling, charging or storing the MOVie 440. It should not be exposed to extremes of temperature, water, dust or other contaminants It should not be dropped, misused or generally mistreated If the device requires cleaning it should be wiped with a clean, dry cloth. No abrasive cleaning agents should be used. The device should not be tampered with. No attempt should be made to access the internal components. Any interference will invalidate the warranty (if applicable)
3 Functionality
3.1 Default screen
This screen is shown by the unit initially and after 30 seconds of inactivity:

16. Maximum Journey Times (MJT) Should you be required to address an issue where the maximum journey time has been breached, or called into question, by a customer. The table below supports information displayed on your MOVie
Maximum Journey Times can vary between 70 minutes (travelling in one zone during the Maximum Fare daytime period) and 4 hours (Sunday, Bank Holiday)
A customer who exceeds the MJT will be charged for an unfinished journey (£4 - 5) when they finally touch out, and, for an un-started journey. In total the customer loses £8 -10 in that single transaction. Clarification of MJT breach issues can be resolved by using the ‘London Connections’ map to assist in determining journey times
