A large and somewhat stubborn breed, the American Akita (referred to generallyas just “Akita”) originates in Japan where it was used for hunting deer and bears.Though the American Akita is considered separate than the Akita Inu (the Japanese

Akita) in many countries, in the United States and Canada, they are considered thesame with only slight differences in type. The American Akita was formerly known asthe Great Japanese Dog.

Alaskan Malamute

The Alaskan Malamute is part of the working breed group and is still commonlyused as a sled dog in Alaskan terrain. Their thick, double coat keeps them warm inextremely low temperatures and cool in the summertime. Often confused with theSiberian Husky, Alaskan Malamutes are generally larger than Huskies and have adistinctive curl to their tails.

American Cocker Spaniel

Used as a hunting dog, mainly as a bird and gun dog, the American CockerSpaniel is a hardy breed with a friendly personality. In England they were used inhunting woodcocks, which gave these engaging companions their name. They comein a medium size with thick coats to protect them from brush and briars. Known bymany as simply Cocker Spaniel in the United States, other countries use the fullname to differentiate between other spaniel breeds such as the English Cocker

Spaniel.

American Pit Bull Terrier

A mix of bulldogs and terriers, the American Pit Bull Terrier (or Pit Bull) is amedium size breed which arose from nineteenth century dog breeders in England,

Ireland, and Scotland crossing terriers and bulldogs for a combination of the feistyterrier spirit with the athletic strength of the bulldog. They are most commonlyknown as being used in dog fighting rings, and incidentally, that was why it wascreated. Dog baiting is outlawed in many countries, however. Known also for itsloyalty and protectiveness, Pit Bulls can be a good family dog.

American Staffordshire Terrier

Similar to the American Pit Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier hasbeen commonly used in dog-fighting. They come from the same nineteenth centurycrossings of bulldogs and terriers as seen in the American Pit Bull Terriers. Originallybred to be used as hunting, farm, and guard dogs, the Staffordshire Terrier workswell with people. Staffordshire terriers are generally large and well-muscled, andstrict training must be given early on to ensure a good temperament. British andIrish immigrants to the United States brought these versatile dogs with them duringthe 1800s in an especially large amount after the American Civil War. The passing ofthe Human Ethics Acts in Britain and Ireland in the 1830s made animal fighting,including bear-baiting, illegal; thus, the demand for the original Staffordshire terrierwas reduced.

Australian Cattle Dog

A high-energy dog, the Australian Cattle Dog (known also as Queensland Heeler,

Blue Heeler, or Red Heeler) is commonly used as a herding dog to drove cattle. The Australian Cattle Dog is a medium-sized breed with a short, thick coat and is veryintelligent as well as independent. They must be very agile and strong in order toperform their working duties and needs plenty of exercise.

Despite its misleading name, the Australian Shepherd is a herding dog that comesnot from Australia but from the Western United States. The Australian Shepherds’origins are not from Australia at all, but rather from the western United States.

Aussies (a common nickname) were developed by ranchers who needed agile andenergetic working dogs with a strong desire to herd sheep, cows, and otherlivestock. The “Australian” part of the breed’s name came from Basque sheepherders who migrated from Australia to the United States. They are strong,intelligent dogs who take pleasure in a hard day’s work due to their very high levelsof energy.

Basenji

Known most commonly as the bark-less dog, the Basenji was originally bred as ahunting dog out of Africa. In most places, however, the Basenji is classified as asight hound used to chase game into nets. Its signature curled tail and yodel makesit a unique breed and they are commonly described as aloof by their owners.

Basset Hound

With the shortest legs of the hound group, the Basset Hound was bred as a scent-hound to track small game such as rabbits. In French, “basset” means “quite low.”With a loud howl, they can chase game for hours and spend a lot of time sniffing thefloor. Their tracking abilities are second only to their scenthound cousin, the

Bloodhound. Basset hounds come in a variety of colors and have a short, easy-to-wash coat, however, they can be prone to ear infections due to their drooping ears.

Beagles are small to medium sized scenthounds that look much like their largercousin, the Foxhound. They are not as tall as Foxhounds and have long, silky ears.Beagles are enthusiastic hunting companions that will eagerly track rabbits, hares,and other smaller game using their keen sense of smell. Beagles are used aroundthe world for detection purposes for the importing of agricultural products. Theymake lovely family pets as they are generally easygoing, genetically healthy, and ofa size suitable for homes small or large. These qualities also make Beagles the mostcommonly used dogs in animal testing.

Bearded Collie

An uncommon breed, Bearded Collies are attractive and very active dogs thatneed a great deal of grooming if they are to be kept in their natural long, soft coat.Weekly, if not daily, brushing can keep their hair from matting, but some owners optfor a short “puppy cut” that reduces the grooming burden somewhat. BeardedCollies are the 112th most popular breed in the United States out of a total of 173breeds and are best obtained through reputable breeds or rescues.

Belgian Malinois

Differing from the other Belgian sheepdogs, the Belgian Malinois has astreamlined coat, usually seen in brown. They are a highly-intelligent breed oftenused as police dogs in Europe. Bred in Belgium originally, they are a working breed,

eager to please their owners as well as friendly to strangers. In Belgium, the breedis called the Mechelse Herder for the region in which they originated, which isMeclinian in French or Mechelse or Mechelaar in Dutch.

The Belgian Tervuren comes from the same family of sheepdogs as the Malinoisand the all-black Belgian Sheepdog. Until 1960, all Belgian Sheepdog varieties wereknown as Belgian Sheepdogs, but have since been divided into their own breeds.The Tervuren has a longer, fluffier coat, generally only coming in a brown color.

Bernese Mountain Dog

Bernese Mountain Dogs are a large, strong breed, bred as working dogs to pullcarts in the Swiss Alps. They have a thick coat to keep them warm in cold weatherand a tendency to drool. They are a very friendly breed and love all visitors. Often,they are used as rescue dogs in mountain climates.

Bichon Frise

A toy breed, the Bichon Frise originates from Italy and is most commonly used as acompanion dog. As a non-shedding breed, the Bichon needs daily grooming to keepthem white and clean. Similar in appearance to a Maltese but larger, the name ofthese attractive and popular pets means “curly lap dog” in French. As companiondogs, they often traveled on ships and were favored in royal courts.

Bloodhound

Bloodhounds (or less commonly St. Hubert Hound ) have been carefully bred tobe the ideal scenthound to track people and animals. These large hounds cantirelessly follow even the faintest scent, no matter how old and no matter how far. Ithas the keenest sense of smell of all hounds and possesses a strong andunshakeable desire to keep tracking. Bloodhounds are faithful members of lawenforcement and rescue teams worldwide.

Border Collie

Considered one of the best herding breeds, the Border Collie developed near theborders of England, Wales, and Scotland that give the breed its name. Border Colliesare highly energetic, extremely intelligent, and protective animals who are mastersat herding sheep and other livestock. Bred exclusively for farm work and herding,Border Collies are also popular in dog sports, and as household pets that can besweet and affectionate. However, as a herding breed they may have a tendency tonip and herd younger members of the family. Without appropriate exercise andmental stimulation, Border Collies can become hyperactive and unhappy. Trainingmust begin early and dutifully or else the breed may be prone to creating their ownmischief.

Borzoi

A large but agile breed, the Borzoi originates from Eastern Europe. Also known asthe Russian Wolfhound , the majestic, regal looking Borzoi came to Russia from avariety of middle Asian countries. Very similar to the greyhound, Borzois aresighthounds, originally used to “course” (chase) game. Nowadays, although theymay have a strong desire to chase small animals, they are a laid back family pet.They come in several colors and have a silky, wavy coat.

German Shepherd

German Shepherds are also highly intelligent dogs. They take to training veryeasily, and make very loyal pets. They stay focused for very long periods when givencommands. They can be a little prone to dominance issues, especially with other

dogs. They are very suspicious of strangers, and tend to be very protective of theirhomes. Because of this, they make good guard dogs.

Golden Retriever

The Golden Retriever is possibly the friendliest dog breed on the planet. Theytend to be very boisterous and really enjoy playing. If they aren’t exe rcised daily,they tend to start misbehaving. It can be a little distracting.

Labrador Retriever

These Labrador Retriever dogs tend to be very even-tempered, good withchildren and other pets, eager to please, and very energetic. They need daily

exercise or they start acting up. Devoted and friendly, this is one of the mostpopular breeds of dog.

Poodle

Poodles are smart and obedient. Though they can be very quiet dogs, they reallylove to play. They are particularly good with children. They learn commands veryquickly.

Although they have fierce reputations, Rottweilers are loyal members of thefamily, and tend to be very protective. Often used as guard gods, this breed tends tobe brave, alert, and domineering. They can sometimes get overprotective of thefamily if they think the family is threatened. These dogs need constant attention andsocialization, and can become very destructive if they think they are being ignored. Afrustrated Rottweiler left alone at home can destroy a room more completely than agang of vandals.

Cardigan Welsh Corgi

These short-legged Cardigan Welsh Corgi dogs love to play, and are little bundlesof energy. They are well behaved in every area except keeping quiet. Theysometimes pick fights with other dogs, even bigger dogs.

Husky

Huskies are very loyal and companionable. They are inclined to misbehaving insmall ways, and can be very stubborn about getting what they want. They can beaggressive around dogs they don’t know, but tend to get on well with other pets inthe same home. They can also be rather noisy, howling and barking at all hours.They have traditionally been used to pull sleds, and consequently have almostboundless endurance.

Mastiff

Though large and powerful, Mastiffs are actually gentle giants. They are laid-back,good natured, and friendly. They are very loyal dogs, and are good with children.However, they don’t tend to be very demonstrative or social, and they don’t play a

lot, so children might not find them to be very fun pets. They were bred as guarddogs.

Malamute

Malamutes are very social creatures, and are heavily oriented towards their pack,or human family. They are well-behaved as long as they get daily exercise. If theydon’t get daily exercise then they tend to become nervous and hyperactive, and willstart tearing up upholstery and scratching the walls and floor. Like huskies they havebeen bred for pulling sleds.

Black Russian Terrier

These Black Russian Terriers are both smart and stubborn. Protective of theirfamily, they are suspicious of strangers. They are gentle with kids and good withmost other pets. However, do not introduce them into a house with larger dogs.They almost always get into dominance struggles with larger dogs. They were bredfor military service, and often serve as guard dogs.

St. Bernard

St. Bernards are relaxed and gentle, and good dogs for the whole family. However,they don’t really like to play as much as other breeds, and they can tend to be slowand stubborn. They were bred for search and rescue missions, and to carry smallloads. They are very strong dogs.

Beagle

Beagles love to play, and they love to go outside. They make excellent companionsto children, and are incredibly friendly. They are prone to howling, both when upsetand happy, and have a tendency to run off to follow interesting scents and trails. Itis not always so easy to keep them from doing this.

Great Dane

Although Great Danes were bred to hunt large game and stand guard duty, theyare very gentle and loving with their families. They can be very playful, and theirlarge size can make this easily overwhelming to small children. They also slobber alot.

Newfoundland

Newfoundlands are known for being very sweet and loving. Because of this, they

make excellent family dogs.

Dalmatians can run for miles, and need to get plenty of hard exercise every day. Itis not an appropriate companion for small children. They can sometimes getaggressive.

Weimaraner

Weimaraners do not do well when they are penned up, they are meant to beoutside dogs. They can be very stubborn, and they are also brave and playful. Theymake excellent companions for people who lead vigorous outdoor lives.

Pointer

Pointers were bred to track falling birds for bird hunters, and point to theirlocations. They are very distractible unless they are on point, in which case theyhave laser-like focus. They need a lot of exercise or they can become destructive.

Although friendly and gentle, they tend to be too rambunctious for small children.

Bulldog

Although Bulldogs are famous for their droopy faces, they are actually very happyand friendly dogs. They are generally very relaxed and calm, although they can getaggressive around dogs they don’t know. They tend to be good with other pets inthe house, even other dogs.

Pekingese

Pekingese dogs are laid-back and not very demonstrative or playful. In many ways,the pekingese is a very cat-like dog. However, the can form close bonds with theirowners.

Pug

Pugs are very playful and friendly. They will often run around and jump just for the

sheer joy of it. Though usually obedient, they can sometimes be stubborn,particularly when it comes to food. They make good lap dogs.

Chihuahua

Yorkshire Terrier

Although Yorkshire Terriers are curious, active, and brave, they also enjoy beinglap dogs. They can bark a bit much, and sometimes seem to go looking for trouble.

Maltese

Malteses are popular lap dogs, as they are very gentle and affectionate. They canbark a lot, especially at strangers.

Miniature Schnauzer

Miniature Schnauzers are very well mannered and curious. They enjoy being

Chinese Crested Dog

Chinese Crested Dogs are some of the most exotic looking dogs on the planet.Many of them are completely hairless except for their tails and a crest of long hairon the tops of their heads. Because they have so little hair, they tend not to triggerallergies. They are playful and gentle, obedient, good with strangers, and good withother pets.

Irish Setter

Irish Setters are friendly and good natured with both humans and other animals.They have even been known to get along well with cats. They are very playful andactive, and need to get outside regularly. They are very intelligent, and can oftenfigure out what you want of them, and can even seem to communicate well withother pets.

Sussex Spaniel

Harrier

These Norfolk Terriers are incredibly active creatures. They run around, chasethings, dig holes, and investigate everything in sight. They are very smart, and alsovery friendly.

Toy Poodle

Japanese Chins stick to their owners like glue. They are gentle and playful. Someof them can even climb like cats.

English Cocker Spaniel

English Cocker Spaniels are high energy dogs, and they need to get a lot ofexercise. They are very demonstrative, and tend to be eager-to-please. These dogstend to be very devoted to their families and don’t like being separated from them.

Brittany
