From the Rectory November 2016

Dear Friends Psalm 46:1 tells us: “God is our refuge and strength A very help in trouble” For Christians down the centuries, this has been a great source of comfort as they remember the great things that God has done for them. The ability to remember is a wonderful gift that God has given to us. In a flash you can be a child again, skimming rocks across a pond, or walking in a meadow. Many of us can recall the time when we first fell in love, got married and had children. We can remember because those memories are fixed in our minds. And time cannot rob you of those so long as your memory continues to function. Some of our memories are happy and we can recall wonderful experiences. But some of our memories are sad and we may weep The problem, though, is that sometimes memory fails us. Sometimes we forget. For that reason, I think that the Remembrance Sunday Service is one of the most important services in the Church’s calendar, after Christmas and Easter. Because it helps us not to forget why we have the freedom that we enjoy today. And it is vitally important that we never forget that peace here in Great Britain was not bought cheaply but at the cost of many lives in the first and second world war Remembrance Sunday is not just a reminder of those who died in the First and Second World Wars - important as they were. It is also a reminder of other conflicts that our armed services have been in; The Korean War, The Aden and Malayan Emergencies, The Falkland War, The Cyprus Conflict, Northern Ireland, The 1st and 2nd Gulf Wars, The Afghanistan and Iraq Conflicts, Remembrance Sunday gives us an opportunity to say “Thank you” for the sacrifice that so many have made so that we in the United Kingdom can enjoy freedom and peace. A few years back I was talking with the builder who had come to do some work on the vicarage, he was proudly telling me that he had had a telephone call from his son that morning from Afghanistan where he was serving, we talked about how long he had been out there, when he was due home, how he felt about his son being out there and about his 21st birthday in 3 days time. The next day I had knock on the door, with the news that he that been Killed in Helman that afternoon by a sniper bullet. A young man just a few days from his 21st Birthday who gave his life for our peace. We must never forget, and we must never stop being thankful. At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them… Yours in Christ

Darleen

Little Plumstead Hospital Site: Were any proposals on the table following the destructive fire to the Great Hall? Parish noted nothing received as yet. Parish Council are yet to receive any further information about the Walled Garden condition, the area of consecrated ground and the Woodland. Little Plumstead Hospital Site administrators have no more funds. BDC had contacted council to note that 2 options existed for the administration of the Play Areas, Woodland Area, Church Car Park area. The first was for the Parish to receive £100,000.00 to maintain these areas or for BDC to keep the money and maintain the areas. Council were concerned that the money would draw down quickly and no earnings are made from savings. The Responsibility would include insurance and the intervening years without attention meant that areas such as the Church Car Park already required resurfacing work and the Woodland required attention. Communal usage has to be maintained for these areas. Cllr Vincent would recirculate details. Alexander Grace Homes Ltd. are current owners of the Lakeland areas and are examining ways of funding and implementing their Management Plan. Parish Cllrs. are in contact and monitoring events. There is little to report as yet. Matters around the Allotments and rainwater harvesting were noted. Devolution proposals go for Council vote in November although considerable

Thorpe End WI Did you know that dogs can be trained to put a card into an ATM, remove the cash, retrieve the card and pass all to an adult requiring such vital assistance? This amazing training was described to us at our September meeting by Elaine David of Canine Partners. The careful matching of dog and partner is essential. The invaluable work of this organisation was evident as Elaine’s talk ranged from aiding with the basic removal of a sock to the loading of a washing machine. Numerous questions were asked by members. Summer has gone, but there will be a warm welcome at our next meeting on November 17th, at St David’s Church Hall, starting at 7:15pm. It will be our Annual Meeting, when there will be a review of our year’s activities by our President and Secretary, our Financial Report presented and information from our Programme Secretary about Speakers for 2017. A very pleasant part of the evening will be helping one member to celebrate her 60 years as a member of the WI. If you are available do visit the Christmas Fair on November 24th at the Federation Office, 45 All Saints Green, Norwich. Members please note that our Christmas Party is at 7:15pm on December 8th. Visitors and guests are most welcome to our meetings, which are generally held on the third Thursday of the month. Details can be found on our posters at Thorpe End PO, by visiting our website www.thorpeendwi.wordpress.com or by phoning Carole on 01603 434228.

Further…. Group Scout Leader musings. Well what a Summer!! It has certainly been a busy one for the Scout Group with a plethora of activities for the kids to do. Our 50th Anniversary came and went with a lot of activities laid on for the parents and children, a slightly disappointing turnout but it came right in the end. We had been hoping for some press coverage but I guess the Lord Mayors procession on the same day took up the media interest. Still, the Reverend Darlene gave the group a blessing for another 50 years of Scouting and serving our Community. This also helped with recruiting new Executive members who help steer the direction of the group. Both Beavers and Cubs have been celebrating respective birthdays this year... Beavers reaching 30, and Cubs an Impressive 100 years. Beavers from all over the district attended Bewilderwood near Wroxham and had a fantastic day out with lots of activities to take part in. Locally the Beaver section has been busy since the end of the school holidays. The Cub section had a fun day with activities laid on at Northgate High School Dereham, along with a Summer camp held at Two Mile Bottom in Thetford Forest. The Sea Scout section goes from strength to strength despite having to limit their activities due to the lack of adults willing to give up their time to develop our young people. Summer camp was at Mike Thurston water at North Walsham, when the final transition took place from Land Scout to water baby, this in part was also helped by a generous grant from Broadland District Council towards the cost of purchasing 36 buoyancy aids allowing all of the Scouts on the water at the same time. This made a huge difference to the skills that were imparted during the week, and also to the Scouts confidence on and in the water. This has been demonstrated further by the Scuba diving nights and the continuing achievements with 3 Scouts achieving their RYA Youth level 3 sailing, 2 Scouts achieving RYA Youth level 4 sailing, and most recently 8 Scouts achieving RYA Youth level 2 sailing. The Royal Yacht Association awards are not for the feint hearted and the Scouts have to demonstrate a certain level of skill and learning. Whilst the RYA qualifications are an achievement in themselves the Scouts have also developed personal courage, self reliance, and confidence and they have risen to the challenges that have come their way. Huge congratulations to them… their families must be so proud of them, as we are. The demand is also there for an Explorer section which meets on a Tuesday night 7 -9 pm for the older Scouts (14 -18 years). This has been running since the beginning of September and despite small numbers it is growing. We have taken a gamble with this section by starting it up and running for 6 months, hoping we can attract an Explorer leader and get the section really going well. The plan is to put in finance, and leaders on a rota, to get the section established as there is a need for it and we would like to keep our young people within the group. As always we are suffering from a lack of adults willing to give up their time to help guide these young people and assist their journey towards becoming confident citizens. Scouting gives these young people the edge in both their general and working lives. If you can help make a difference you will be most welcome. We will support you with training and opportunities for self development….why should the kids have all the fun? We have a strong vibrant team in all the sections and would hope that because of the programme we offer our young people we will attract adults willing to help us deliver this exciting series of learning and activities.
