• Jesus is born• Event:• Around 6-4BC a Census of all the Roman people was ordered. Mary and Joseph

had to travel to Bethlehem from Nazareth to be registered. •• Whilst there Mary gave birth to Jesus. She had to put Jesus in a manger in a

stable because there was no room at the inn.• Evidence:• Bible: Luke’s Gospel.• The 4 Gospels tall about key events in the life of Jesus and were written by people

close to him only a short time after his death. • Though written separately many of the accounts of the events are similar. • Would there have been an inn?• Archaeology has uncovered 1st Century buildings in Bethlehem. They are 2 stories

with caves on the lower floor which acted as stables. • Houses like this still exist and children in Israel are still born in these caves/stables.

• Jesus is baptised• Matthew 3:13-17

• 13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. 14 But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?”

• 15 Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented.

• 16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”

Ten Healed of Leprosy Luke 17:11-19Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus travelled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance and called out in a loud voice, "Jesus, Master, have pity on us!" When he saw them, he said, "Go, show yourselves to the priests." And as they went, they were cleansed. One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus' feet and thanked him (he was a Samaritan.)Jesus asked, "Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?" Then he said to him, "Rise and go; your faith has made you well."

Jesus performs miracles

• The Parable of the Good Samaritan• Luke 10:25-37• Jesus was telling a crowd to love their neighbours around them when a man asked Jesus “Who is

my neighbour?”•• 30-32 Jesus answered by telling a story. “There was once a Jewish man traveling from Jerusalem to

Jericho. On the way he was attacked by robbers. They took his clothes, beat him up, and went off leaving him half-dead. Luckily, a priest was on his way down the same road, but when he saw him he angled across to the other side. Then a Levite religious man showed up; he also avoided the injured man.

• 33-35 “A Samaritan traveling the road came on him. When he saw the man’s condition, his heart went out to him. Even though the Samaritan people hated the Jews, he gave him first aid, disinfecting and bandaging his wounds. Then he lifted him onto his donkey, led him to an inn, and made him comfortable. In the morning he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take good care of him. If it costs any more, put it on my bill—I’ll pay you on my way back.’

• 36 “What do you think? Which of the three became a neighbour to the man attacked by robbers?”• 37 “The one who treated him kindly,” the religion scholar responded.• Jesus said, “Go and do the same.”

• Jesus is crucified• Event:• The Romans were concerned that Jesus would lead a rebellion against them; they

were afraid of losing their power. He was put to death by Pontius Pilate who was known for being ruthless. Jesus was crucified (killed on a cross) around 30-33CE on a hill called Golgotha outside Jerusalem for ‘crimes against Rome’.

•• Evidence:• Bible: The Crucifixion is spoken of in each of the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke

and John) • Tacitus (Roman Historian)– wrote Annals XV in 114CE – ‘Christ, the founder of a

group Christians, was put to death by Pontius Pilate’• Josephus (1st Century historian) – born only 3 years after Jesus’ death. Talked to

people who knew Jesus and what had happened. He wrote ‘there was a man around this time named Jesus. He was a doer of wonderful works and a wise teacher…he was crucified by the Roman prefect Pontius Pilate’.

• After Jesus was killed on the cross his body was buried in a sealed tomb; but Christians believe it didn’t stay there very long.

• In the Bible it says that three days later Jesus came back to life and showed himself to many people. He even let his disciple Thomas touch his wounds!

• Christians believe Jesus defeated death when he died on the cross and that they too will have eternal life.
