In order to carefully assess a student’s literacy needs, a “reading physical” which not only utilizes SRI
test results, but other assessment as well, helps us gain a more comprehensive picture of student reading ability. Use of multiple measures of assessment, such as reading records, fluency checks, projects and portfolios, self-appraisals, and teacher observations all add to the picture of a student’s literacy skills.
Allow students with Lexile levels far ABOVE grade-level to read age-appropriate books that may be below their recommended independent level, along with more-challenging books. Reading from age-appropriate literature is socially and emotionally beneficial and will promote fluency development. Consider the student’s interests and experiences when evaluating understanding of text and matching texts to readers.
