Members, please be on the lookout for candidates for flag certificates--proper display of

the US flag. If a permanent display is in accordance with flag etiquette we would like to

honor those who are responsible.

President's Message: We hope you all enjoyed Don Wyman's presentations on George Washing, Spy

Master. If you follow Fox News you will know that this topic has been in the

news recently with the publication of Brrian Kilmead's book on the same

topic. Don got to us first! This has been a busy month for our

Secretary George Chaffee as he has been shepherding our Annual Report, which involves the accounting of Membership

payments and reporting that information to our State Secretary.

Additionally he has been instrumental in finalizing our new Budget as well as

publishing the minutes for our meetings. Please take the time to thank George for all his efforts on our behalf.

All of your Chapter Officers have worked hard this year on several

projects that will help maintain a strong and growing Chapter. Among other

things, they have developed a revised

Constitution and By-Laws, under the guidance of Bob Moody; worked on developing a new Budget, under the

guidance of Glenn Langston and George Chaffee; Obtaining Member's Photos

and Biographies, under the guidance of Frank Nolte who has also been

responsible for the redevelopment of our outstanding Newsletter. Other members

have shepherded the ROTC Program (Steve Offutt), the safekeeping of our Chapter's Property (Frank Nolte), Developed for the first time a year's

schedule of Chapter Meeting Program speakers (Jerry Hardwich), revised and strengthened our Historical Documents (Richard Offutt) and finally represented our Chapter in numerous Parades and

the Flag placements at Lone Oak Cemetery. I apologize if I missed any

members contributions.

Finally I hope you all had a wonderful and Blessed Christmas and will have the best ever New Year. See you at our next

Chapter meeting on January 4th.

All the best, Scott Bushnell

Up Coming- Mark your Calender

Tom Thiel will discuss the Korean war both from his perspective as a

rifleman on the front during his time in Korea, and from where he is now, 60+ years later. He will touch just a bit on the "politics" of the war. He

will very briefly tell about US presence in Korea during the 60

years since the war, and finally what it meant to all.

FYIAl Lane would like to share this with us

If you have ever tried to search for records of WWI veterans you have probably discovered that such records are scarce. The fire at the St Louis Military Record Center in 1973 destroyed most of them. I'd like to share a bit of luck I had finding records on one of my grandfathers from sources I did not know existed. Both of my grandfathers served in the Army in France in 1918. I inherited a nice leather bound unit history from my maternal grandfather, Noah B. Moody. He served in the 316th Field Artillery and is mentioned by name along with two photographs of him in the unit history. However, I knew almost nothing about the service of my other grandfather, Arthur F. Lane. I remember talking to Grandfather Lane about his Army service as a child but little information was obtained. In recent years, I was furnished with a copy of a letter (below) he wrote in August 1918 from France to friends in his hometown of Mt. Olive, NC. He signed the letter with his unit designation, "Co. F, 54th Infantry, AEF." I contacted the US Army center at Carlisle, PA, but little information was available. Contact with the NC State Archives disclosed that indeed the state did keep records on WWI veterans in the form of a "service card," or Form 724. That card (below) has a nice summary of service including the period of time spent overseas, etc. I also understand that every state, either in its state archives or the Adjutant General's Office, should have a Form 724 on each of its WWI veteran's. Recently, I was informed by a friend who has similar interests about the WWI Museum in Kansas City. On the Museum's website ( http://theworldwar.org/) you can navigate to a search menu that will allow you to do word searches in their extensive on-line collections database. I simply searched "54th" and much to my surprise up came a unit history of Co. F, 54th Infantry, my grandfather's very company. An email to the museum resulted in a nice return email with a scanned copy of the 17 page booklet. Using the information in the booklet, I was able to determine the village where he was posted the day he wrote the letter. The booklet makes a nice addition to my family "archives." A brief word about some additional records on WWI Vets--Ancestry.com has databases of WWI draft cards, Veteran's Administration headstone applications, and actual induction and transportation orders for a few states. Good luck searching,Al Lane
