The President’s Message

Lake-Sumter Chapter Sons of the American Revolution

As our patriot ancestors slogged through the depths of winter, let us take time to remember their sacrifices. Winter continued to unleash its burdens on them with New England feeling the brunt of Mother Nature. While our patriot ancestors were regrouping from a number of defeats, they were also reveling from some

dramatic victories. The dismal times of frigid cold and snow had set in and they were anticipating the coming of Spring and beginning the planting of the fields.

The continual dual concepts of protest and conflict competed with their time at home as the development of the theory of our foundation of independence was taking place. A number of events took place during this time frame, including:

• On this day in history, March 4, 1776, George Washington takes Dorchester Heights, forcing the British to abandon Boston within weeks. After the Battles of Lexington and Concord, the local militia and the Continental Army surrounded the British troops in Boston in a siege which lasted an entire year.

• Baron von Steuben arrives at Valley

Forge on February 23, 1778. He joined the army at 17 and saw extensive service during the Seven Years War in battles with Russia and Austria, during which

he rose to captain, and was made a personal aide to Frederick the Great. He eventually became acquainted with the French Minister of War, who, in the 1770’s was involved with France's secret funding of the American Revolution. He was recommended to Ben Franklin and Silas Deane, the American ambassadors in Paris, who then recommended him to George Washington.

• February 21, 1787, the Confederation Congress approves a new Constitutional Convention to be held at Philadelphia beginning on May 14, 1787. The Articles of Confederation, which was the first governing document of the United States, had proved to be too weak for the government to function effectively.

Freedom was being aggressively pursued, and the winds of change were underway. We continue to make strides and move the chapter forward. We as a chapter, and as individuals, keep active in a number of important activities:

• The March meeting attendance was 23,

including 19 members and 4 guests.

• All our members that have participated in referring friends and family need to be congratulated. Keep sending John Moore the names of any additional family, friends, and acquaintances that may qualify for membership. Special thanks need to go to John Moore for his perseverance in getting new members on board.

• Ron Grove led the Americanism Award effort. Thanks to all on the Executive Committee for updating the list of activities. Please see the list of our chapter’s accomplishments in this month’s newsletter.

• We have completed the Rumbaugh Oration contest. Hopefully, these contestants will also qualify for the Knight Essay contest.

• Compatriot Grove has developed a new Poster Contest. The committee has been working to secure participation of several local schools. At this time, we have three schools that have agreed to participate.

• Bill Hayes has been working with both JROTC and Boy Scouts.

- The Lake-Sumter SAR chapter

presents awards to individuals in six JROTC units in Lake and Sumter Counties and one Sea Cadet unit in Lake County.

- The Mount Dora High School AF JROTC has designated CDT Daniel Gantz as the Cadet this year, it should also be noted that he is a recent Eagle Scout and has been selected as having the Outstanding Eagle Project for Lake District, Central Florida Council Boy Scouts of America.

- There have been 5 Boy Scouts who have risen to the rank of Eagle Scout so far this year. All of them will be presented with SAR Certificates. Five Lake-Sumter SAR chapter members have volunteered to make the award presentations in April and May.

• For February, our chapter participated

in the GeorgeFest parade on February 24 in Eustis, FL.

• Many of our members attended and assisted with The Liberty Tree

dedication services in The Villages on March 10.

• As we transition over the next few months to a new slate of officers, we will need additional volunteers in a number of areas including the Newsletter, Chaplain, and Historian. Please consider these areas, as well as other areas in which you might be of service to your chapter. Feel free to contact me, or any of the officers, to discuss these opportunities.

In closing, please give thought to what our Patriot ancestors were challenged with, protesting the implementation of taxes without any representation from the colonies.

God bless our patriot relatives for what they did to persevere and save our country. All the best to each and every member. Good health, prosperity, and happiness to you and your family.

Members Gather

Meeting

At 11:00 a.m., President Jerry Hardwich, assisted by Secretary Ed Riley, called the meeting to order. The Color Guard, led by Color Guard Commander Glenn Langston, and consisting of compatriot’s George Chaffee, Ken Mosher, Ralph D. Nelson, Jr, Scott Bushnell and John Moore, posted the colors. Chaplain Nelson provided the invocation; and Compatriots Ron

Grove and Bob Beightol led the attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance and the SAR Pledge, respectively. A total of 19 members and 4 guests were in attendance. The guests were identified as Ocklawaha DAR Chapter member Arlene Riley; guest, presenter and prospective member, COL Pete Stauder, USAF (Ret); Aiden Norris; and Terry Oldham.

Officer/ Committee Reports

President: President Gerald Hardwich announced that the Nominating Committee consisting of himself as Chairman, and Past Presidents Scott Bushnell and Robert H. Moody had completed their search and proposed the following slate of candidates who have all agreed to run:

Following the announcement, President Hardwich asked for nominations from the floor for the Chapter positions of President, 1st Vide-President, 2nd Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer. As no nominations were received, a motion was made and seconded to close nominations and to accept the Slate proposed by the Nominating Committee. The election will be held at the April member meeting with Officer’s installed during the May meeting. Members were reminded that any members needing transportation to the monthly meetings should contact either himself at 352-217-6816 or Bob Beightol at 850-206-7344 and arrangements will be made.

1st Vice President:Vice-President Allan Lane reported that the speaker for the Chapter April 7th meeting will be Dr. David Head, Ph.D. Dr. Head teaches American history at the University of

Central Florida. A native of Western New York, he received his B.A. in history from Niagara University and his Ph.D. in history from the University at Buffalo. He is the author of Privateers of the Americas: Spanish American Privateering from the United States in the Early Republic and the editor of an

encyclopedia of Atlantic world history and a soon-to-be-published collection of essays on pirates.

His presentation will tell the story of Americans who participated in the Spanish American Wars of Independence of the early nineteenth centuries. These men broke U.S. law to accept privateering commissions from the new born republics of Spain's crumbling empire, capture Spanish vessels, and come, if they were lucky, with a rich prize. The presentation will pay special attention to people involved: who they were and why they chose to go privateering.

Education Committee:

Compatriot Ron Grove, Chairman of the Education Committee, provided the following status for the individual competitions:

Joseph S. Rumbaugh Historical Oration Contest: In last month’s Gazette, it was reported that Ms. Yanni Verina Zhang, Montverde Academy, had been awarded second place in the FLSSAR phase of the SAR oration contest. Ms. Zhang is expected to attend our April Member Meeting and will present her oration for the membership. Again, Congratulations to Ms. Zhang for a job well done.

Poster Contest: Compatriot Grove, at the Executive Committee meeting, announced an unusual situation involving the ongoing SAR Poster Contest. The topic of the 2018 poster contest has been announced as “The Battle of Pensacola”. One of the local schools brought to his attention that the title “Battle of Pensacola” refers to the battle which occurred in 1814, and not during the Revolutionary War. The military operation during the time period of the Revolutionary War in Pensacola, FL, actually occurred in 1781, primarily between Spain and England and is generally referred to as “The Siege of Pensacola. FLSSAR was informed of the confusion and they decided to continue with the topic of “The Battle of Pensacola”. The confusion could result in an

interesting twist at the upper echelons of the competition. Regardless, three local schools have entered into the Poster Contest and next meeting (April 7) the Chapter will vote on the winner. Youth Essay Contest: Compatriot Grove announced that the essay submitted by our candidate, Allison Parker, entitled “Fueling Independence”, an excellent essay, failed to place in the top three at the FLSSAR continuation of the Youth Essay contest. American History Teacher Award: Compatriot Grove received word that our candidate, Mr. Robert Burke, won the FLSSAR portion of the contest and will receive a Certificate and $500.00 prize. which he will received at the May 2018 BOM. Mr. Burke’s essay has been forwarded to NSSAR for the final phase of the contest. Americanism Award: Compatriot Grove provided the following list of Americanism Award accomplishments by the Chapter during the 2017 Calendar Year:

Arlene Riley as a contribution for the DAR Box-Tops for Education program.

Compatriot Moody also reported that he had discovered the Box-Tops logo on some cleaning products he found at Lowe’s indicating that we should examine all boxes for the logo. He also reminded members that Lowe’s provided a 10% discount to military customers on active duty, reservist, retirees and disabled veterans. The discount is also offered to immediate family members with proper military identification.

Editor’s Note: For additional information on the 10% military discount offered by Lowe’s and Home Depot, refer to the “This and That” section of this issue of the Gazette.

Eagle Scout, JROTC Committee: Committee Chairman Bill Hayes announced that award of Eagle Scout Certificates is ongoing; however, an area change for the Boy Scout Districts has been announced. In the not too distant future, the Lake County North and South Districts for the

Boy Scouts of American, will combine which could possibly double our award program. As of the date of this meeting, five Eagle Scout Certificates have been awarded with two more scheduled for next week.

Five of the seven local High Schools to which we normally present the SAR JROTC medal, have responded that they wish to continue in the program. The remaining two High Schools are expected to respond in the affirmative.

GeorgeFest Parade/ Color Guard: Color Guard Commander Glenn E. Langston reported that the Chapter participated in the 115th GeorgeFest parade and the 30th for our Chapter since its inception in 1989, the parade had also been one of our best with a total. of ten members in attendance, seven of which were in uniform. In conclusion, Compatriot Langston thanked everyone for their participation and reminded us that our next parade will be the Tavares 4th of July parade. See Gazette section on Chapter Activities for additional information on the GeorgeFest parade.

Newsletter/ Publicity/ Photography:

Publicity: Members were reminded to watch for SAR articles in local newspapers and bring them to the next meeting and we will ensure they get counted in our next annual Americanism Report. The importance of the articles is that the Chapter receives points for each article published in a local newspaper in the

Americanism Report. Thus far, we have had SAR articles published in the Daily Commercial, Triangle News, The Villages Daily Sun, and the Sumter Shopper, and there could be others of which we are unaware as we submit draft news releases to a total of twelve newspapers within our local area.

Photography: Members are reminded that if you are need of a photograph for the Chapter website, just let us know. We can take a suitable photo at the meeting. Also, member photos of SAR, historical or other events of interest are always welcome, and attempts will be made to publish those photos in the newsletter.

Registrar:

Lake-Sumter Registrar John Moore reported three applications at NSSAR pending approval and 3 to 4 prospective member applications being researched and prepared.

Presentation…Researching our Irish Roots Colonel Pete Stauder, US Air Force (Retired), Presenter and potential member, provided us with information to assist those researching their ancestors of Irish descent. COL Stauder has traced his Revolutionary roots back to William Thornton, whose brother, Mathew Thornton signed the Declaration of Independence as a representative of New Hampshire. In search of his ancestors, COL Stauder had conducted extensive research in Germany, Ireland and England. Researching in Ireland required knowing at least three specific facts, the last name of your ancestor (with all spelling variations); place of birth; and approximate date of birth. Despite the Irish speaking English, those researching in Ireland would have to

have a basic understanding of Latin, Old English and their letter format. An important source of information is the parish (church) records if they can be located for the family. COL Stauder provided the following web sites to assist in the research of our Irish ancestors: Findmypast.com; irishtimes.com/ancestor; and Irelandxo.com. Additional sources of information mentioned were” Irish Record Sources for Family and Local History” by James G Ryan; “Griffiths Valuation 1848 to 1864”; and the “Irish National Archives” which allows access to the Irish Census documents. COL Stauder’s presentation was one of those which provided more information than one could absorb in such a short period of time and even harder to relate to those who did not attend. As often said following one of our presentations, you should have been there!

MEMBER INDUCTIONS The approved applications for two members of Compatriot George Chaffee’s family finally arrived at the Chapter and were presented to Compatriot Chaffee. Congratulations to new members Brett F. Chaffee of Houston, TX; and Collin D. Gerber, Edwardsville, Il, and many thanks to Compatriot Chaffee for bringing them into our Chapter. Following the presentation, Compatriot Chaffee provided a few brief details on their Patriot. Their Patriot, Otis Chaffee, on October 17, 1780, responded as a member of the Westminster militia serving under Major Elkanah Day, when Royalton, VT was attacked by Indians. Otis Chaffee survived the Revolutionary War only to die during the battle of Sacketts Harbor, NY, on May 29, 1813, during the War of 1812.

Chapter Activities

Eustis GeorgeFest Parade: Clearly this was our best parade in years. Again, Compatriot Langston generously provided a golf cart which allowed Ocklawaha DAR Arlene Riley, who was in period costume, to participate in the parade. New decorations had been purchased for the golf cart, which included a banner for the walkers, both of which clearly identified the Lake-Sumter SAR Chapter as the contingent moved along the parade route. Many thanks are also due to Compatriot Langston’s business associate, Gary Pinchot, who contributed his time in decorating the golf cart and making numerous trips between Langston Motors and the walker’s staging area transporting SAR members and period weapons to be used in the parade. For those of you who participated in the parade, the following photos should remind of us happy memories and for those unable to attend, it is hoped the photographs provide you with an incentive to participate in the Chapter’s next parade in Tavares, July 4, 2018.

The Villages, Liberty Tree Dedication: On March 10, 2018, Lake-Sumter SAR Chapter members attended the Liberty Tree Dedication in the Villages, resulting from the combined efforts of The Villages SAR Chapter and the John Bartram and Puc Puggy Chapters of the DAR. Speaking at the dedication were The Villages SAR President Donald Wyman; Regents Jeanne Farren and Sally Kautz, of the John Bartram and Puc Puggy Chapters of the DAR; Town Crier Jack Cicotte, The Villages Early American History Club; and President Gerald C. Hardwich, Lake-Sumter SAR Chapter. In addition, Compatriot Scott Bushnell, leading a color guard consisting of Compatriots Ralph D. Nelson, Jr; George Chaffee; John Moore; and Ken Mosher of the Lake Sumter SAR Chapter; Ron Toops, of The Villages SAR Chapter; and Compatriots Jack Townsend and Bill Ferguson of the Withlacoochee SAR Chapter, advanced and retired the colors. Following the dedication, attendees were served a luncheon in the dining facility of the Eisenhower Recreation Facility.

• May 5: James Brown, a member of The Villages Chapter of the SAR will give a presentation titled The USS Slater DE766 and the Destroyer Escort Historical Museum.

• June 2: Roger Smith received a Ph.D. in history from the University of Florida and currently works as an independent researcher and author. His presentation will be on Florida during the Revolution and is titled Florida, the Fourteenth Colony. Dr. Smith is a member of the St. Augustine Chapter of the SAR and has presented this lecture to the NSSAR Leadership Conference at the request of President General Guzy.

Editor’s Note: Occasionally, the Editor receives news about members who are unable to attend or are involved in an event which would be of interest to other members. Should you have news for the Chapter, (i.e., illness, vacation, other SAR Chapter activities, supplemental Patriot, etc.) send it to the Editor and we will find a place for it in the newsletter to keep your members and friends informed. With enough input, we can make this a regular section of the Gazette. Compatriot Chuck White: Most Likely, everyone knows that Compatriot Chuck White, normally a snow bird, was unable to return to Florida this year. For the past several months, he has kept in contact with the Chapter through a series of postcards with messages for the members. To the left is his latest. Incidentally, FYI, it is pretty obvious Chuck wants to be here as all of his postcards depicted scenes from Florida.

Compatriot John Moore: Those who were able to attend the last Chapter meeting may remember that Compatriot John Moore received the approved application for his first Supplemental Patriot, Mr. Archibald Townsend. What you might have missed was when Compatriot Moore pointed directly at Compatriot Ken Mosher (who has twelve approved Supplemental Patriots) and stated, “I am coming after you!” Good luck Compatriot Moore, only eleven more to go, so far!
