English Oral Presentation The Lady or the Tiger?Rafael:Good afternoon! Our oral presentation is about the short story The Lady or the Tiger by Frank R. Stockton. Carolina: First we will talk about the theme of this story (the genre, author, style and storyline), and then we will describe the characters and finally the language.Rafael:With this presentation, we want you to get interested on the story and we hope you reflect about it. But first, we will make you some questions! Do you agree or disagree?Questions: It is possible for two people to know and understand each other completely. I would trust my life to a lover or close friend. Jealousy is a stronger emotion than love. I wouldnt mind an arranged marriage if my spouse was handsome. The death penalty is a fair way to convict criminals. Chance and luck are more important than rules and laws.

Carolina:The Lady or the Tiger is a short story very known for its dilemma. It is a fictional story, which combines humor and serenity.Frank Stockton (1834-1902) He was an American writer (stories and novels) and humorist. And his principal story is this one.Rafael:In ancient times, a semi-barbaric king judged people this way: When a man committed a crime, he had to go to an arena, which had two doors. Behind one, there was a hungry tiger that would devour him, and behind the other was a beautiful lady that he had to marry with, as a reward for his innocence.Carolina:The king had a beautiful daughter, with whom a normal young man fell in love, and she was also in love with him - but that love was forbidden. And when the king discovers, he puts the man in prison until the day of his judgment in the arena.

Rafael:The princess, using her position and money, discovered which door had the lady and which door had the tiger. The lady behind the door was an enemy to her.Once in the arena, the accused looks to the princess for help, and she discreetly signals for him to choose the door on the right, which he does (climax).Carolina:However, the story leaves it up to the reader to decide which came out of the door - the lady or the tiger.Rafael:If she had choose the lady, he would marry her and would never love the princess, and if she had choose the tiger, he would die.The main characters are: The King - barbaric man, very clever, famous and strong. Carolina: The Princess - A beautiful, strong and clever girl just as her father The Young man- A young handsome man who was got in love with the princessAnd the secondary characters are the lady and the tiger.Rafael:Literary devices:In the story there are many adjectives that describe the scenes, the characters and their states of mind. We also have:Cliffhanger we dont know what is going to happen Carolina:Personification: This vast amphitheatre... was an agent of poetic justice." Irony "...she loved him with an ardor that had enough of barbarism in it to make it exceedingly warm and strong."The narrator is primarily 3rd person omniscient Rafael:So, what do you think? Did she choose the lady or the tiger? And why?
