THE KENYA NATIONAL EXAMINATIONS COUNCIL
KNEC ALERT ON FRAUDULENT ACTIVITIES BY UNSCRUPULOUS PERSONS
1.0 The Kenya National Examinations Council is sending an alert to all clients, customers,
stakeholders and the general public to be wary of unscrupulous persons who engage in
fraudulent examination related activities before, during and after the examination period each
year.
2.0 Among the people most targeted by these unscrupulous persons are:
2.1 Candidates preparing to sit National Examinations and specifically KCPE and KCSE
candidates.
2.2 Head teachers of particularly KCPE and KCSE Examination centres.
2.3 Parents.
2.4 Job seekers.
3.0 The fraudsters engage in the following fraudulent activities:
3.1 Printing, circulating and selling fake examination papers fully branded with KNEC
information purported to be examination papers. A paper purported to be 2015 KCSE
Chemistry paper 1 is currently trending on a website of one of the local dailies.
3.2 Circulating false messages purported to have been written by the KNEC, CEO or
KNEC employees on social media platforms including the short message system
(SMS) and WhatsApp.
3.3 Calling unsuspecting head teachers and proprietors / managers of schools demanding
for huge amounts of money to be paid through mobile money transfer.
3.4 Claiming to be the KNEC, CEO or KNEC employee and they use real names of
KNEC employees and their duty stations.
4.0 The fraudulent callers demand for payment for the following purported services:
4.1 To purchase “real” examination papers. When during the examination the candidates
fail to get the “real” questions, they cry foul claiming the paper was an “emergency.”
4.2 To enable the registration for under-age candidates. This year a caller claiming to be
stationed at KNEC registry is using mobile No: 0722905105.
4.3 To help schools to secure better grades in National Examinations results.
4.4 To intervene for National Examinations results not to be cancelled due to anticipated
examination irregularities.
4.5 To secure casual and permanent jobs within KNEC.
5.0 The Council is assuring all the candidates preparing for this year’s examinations that none of
our examinations will be compromised and they should ignore any rumour of a leaked
examination paper and concentrate on their revision and preparations for their examinations.
6.0 The Council is also appealing to members of the public to be vigilant and report cases of
people selling fake examination papers to the nearest police station. Anyone with
information, which may assist the Council in tracking down those undermining the
credibility of our national examinations and the future of our children, are asked to give the
Council or the police such information in confidence.
7.0 Finally, we wish to caution the public that payment for all KNEC services is made through
the bank and sending money to any caller to get a favour is a serious test on personal
integrity.
