SWFT chairman and chief executive to take on dual roles

THE chief executive and chairman ofSouth Warwickshire NHS FoundationTrust (SWFT) have taken over the run-ning of Wye Valley NHS Trust (WVT) inHerefordshire, it was announced yes-terday, Monday.

Glen Burley and Russell Hardy will remain intheir existing posts at SWFT and will workacross both organisations, providing leadershipand strengthened governance.

A spokeswoman for SWFT said the strategicpartnership was not a merger or takeover, andthat Wye Valley NHS Trust will still determinethe provision of healthcare services, and thatboth organisations will continue to deliver ‘busi-ness as usual’ services to their patients.

She added that Mr Burley’s salary, which lastyear fell somewhere between £165,000 and£170,00, would not change, but would bereviewed. Mr Hardy is currently paid between£35,000 and £40,000 as SWFT chairman, andwill get an additional £18,621 for his new rolewith WVT.

Earlier this month NHS Improvement con-firmed that WVT had made quality improve-ments which lifted it out of special measures.

It is now rated as ‘requiring improvement’ bythe CQC — the same rating that SWFT has, although the latter is currently appealing theCQC’s rating.

SWFT, which runs Warwick Hospital, Strat-ford Hospital, Shipston’s Ellen Badger Hospitaland Leamington Hospital, was appointed as its‘buddy’ in January this year.

Mr Burley said: “I’m delighted to announce amutually beneficial partnership between SouthWarwickshire NHS Foundation Trust and WyeValley NHS Trust.

“My first priority will be to ensure that we canconstruct a solution which delivers clinically andfinancially sustainable services to the patientsserved by the Wye Valley Trust within a realistictimeframe.

“Alongside this we will continue to developand improve services in south Warwickshire.

“To do this we will be sharing and developing

best practice solutions across the many areas andchallenges that the two trusts have in common.

“This will achieve the benefits of workingwith a bigger organisation without losing thefocus on local needs and leadership.”

Warwickshire Police has been in a strategicalliance with West Mercia Police since 2012,while Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service hasconsidered a similar arrangement with Herefordand Worcester Fire and Rescue Service.

Award judges tunein to radio comedy

A FORMER student at Stratford Girls’ GrammarSchool has won the much coveted KevinGreening Award at this year’s Student RadioAwards.

Faye Lawrence’s comedy mockumentary series calledYeezy Taught Me series caught the ears of the judges.

It is about Kanye West and the impact he has had on herlife. Delivered in a persona based on an over-dramatisedversion of herself, Faye tells stories about her life whichrelate loosely to Kanye’s music with an over-exaggeratedimportance, as though the music was written about her andfor her.

The Kevin Greening Award is supported by Radio Oneand Global Radio, and is given in recognition of uniqueon-air creativity.

Faye is in her final year studying English Literature andTheatre Studies at the University of Leeds.

While at the grammar school she performed in manydrama productions and musicals as well as producing anumber of videos for the school.

She joined Leeds Student Radio (LSR) in her first yearas a presenter on a weekly arts show and now produces theshow.

In her second year she won the LSR Best EntertainmentShow for her Yeezy Taught Me, which led to her nomina-tion for the national Student Radio Awards.

“I love writing and producing my radio shows,” saidFaye.

“There was something disingenuous about a Shotterygirl presenting a show about rap music and I am delightedto have won the award — the best bit about the ceremonywas the hug from Greg James.”

Faye’s parents, Jill and Michael, said: “We alwaysthought her shows were hilarious but we are not veryobjective judges, we are very proud of her.”

Stratford Girls’ Grammar School head teacher, JacquiCornell, said: “We are equally proud of Faye.

“This award demonstrates the diverse talents andcareers that our girls aspire to.

“We are looking forward to welcoming her back toschool to speak to our girls as part of our inspirationalFutures Week at the beginning of December.”

At SG Doors we specialise in the fi tting of bespoke double skinned, insulated, remote control, electric roller garage doors that can be supplied to your specifi cations, including a range of different colours.

Essentially a Roller Garage Door is an insulated double skin aluminium curtain protecting your garage. With the double side brush in the guide runners and a curtain that rolls right to the fl oor, it is good for excluding draughts as well as effi cient and convenient at both restricting and allowing access to the garage.

FOAM FILLED INSULATED ALUMINIUM SLATS

SAFER THAN CONVENTIONAL Garage DOORSThe space saving allows you to park close to the garage door with no risk and also saves space inside the garage, giving you access to roof joists that would have otherwise been occupied by the garage doors. It also removes the danger of outward swinging garage doors striking unseen persons or objects outside.

The design of Roller Garage Doors means they are effi cient space savers; rather than swinging the door to the side or outwards in front of the garage, the garage door roller system means the doors roll directly up into a top roll system mounted above the door frame.

THE jury in the trial of a manaccused of causing the death of afrail pensioner who suffered a heartattack during a confrontation outsidehis home has been discharged.

Steven Jones, 25, who is from Warwickbut of no fixed address, had pleaded notguilty at Warwick Crown Court to themanslaughter of 75-year-old WilliamHeathcote in November 2014.

The jury had heard that at 8.20pm on18th November someone, allegedly Jones, banged on the window of Mr Heathcote’shome in Pickard Street, Warwick.

But as the trial entered its third week, thejury was discharged for legal reasonswhich cannot be disclosed.

Before being discharged, on JudgeRichard Griffith-Jones’s directions, thejury found heavily-pregnant Paige Tom-linson, 18, of Mercia Way, Warwick, notguilty of conspiring to pervert the course ofjustice.

Her barrister Ben Nicholls had sub-mitted, in the absence of the jury, that therewas insufficient evidence for the caseagainst her to continue, and the judgeagreed.

With the jury back in court, Judge Grif-fith-Jones told them: “The first thing I amgoing to deal with is a direction to say thatPaige Tomlinson should be found notguilty.”

He added: “Jurors decide cases on thefacts, but if a judge considers that, as amatter of law, there’s not a sufficient foun-dation for a case to go to you, you have toaccept the judge’s direction.”

So the jury formally returned a not guiltyverdict on Tomlinson, who was dischargedfrom the dock.

The judge then told them: “The nextthing, which will seem to you rather moredrastic, is that, for reasons which I am notgoing to go into, I am going to dischargeyou from giving any other verdicts in thecase.”

Mr Heathcote died after collapsing withheart failure following the confrontation.

The court had heard that anti-socialyoungsters had been knocking on the dooror windows of the house and then runningoff into the nearby park, chased by MrHeathcote’s son or grandson.

But when Jones banged on the windowagain, it was the pensioner who came outholding a broom which he swung at Jones.

As Mr Heathcote was going back inside,he collapsed and died as a result ofarrhythmia leading to heart failure.

The pensioner’s body was subsequentlyexamined by consultant forensic patholo-gist Professor Olaf Biedrzycki.

Professor Biedrzycki said Mr Heathcotecould have died at any time, without astressful situation, but he added that anyadditional stress would have made his heartbeat harder and faster, which would haveput him at risk of having a sudden heartarrhythmia.

In addition to the manslaughter charge,Jones has pleaded not guilty to intimidatinga teenage witness.

Frankie McDonagh, 19, of CherryStreet, Warwick, and Stephan Reilly, 19, ofWilles Road, Leamington, also denied per-verting the course of justice.

Merger to create betterCitizens Advice service

STRATFORD and Warwick Cit-izens Advice have agreed to amerger.

The new south Warwickshire organ-isation will be better placed to sustainand develop their services for vulner-able people in the future, said YvonneHunter, chair of Trustees of Stratfordand District Citizens Advice.

Services run across south Warwick-shire are not expected to be affected asa result.

Mr Hunter added: “This is afriendly merger that will help ussecure the future of high quality Citi-zens Advice services locally.

“Face-to-face services will continueto be provided in Stratford as well asother locations in the district and byphone.

“Merging our two services will alsogive us the opportunity to developmuch needed new services in thefuture, so we can continue our proudtradition of assisting all those localpeople who need our help.”

Local Citizens Advices are indi-vidual charities not public services. They rely on volunteers as well aspaid staff, and donations from thepublic as well as local authority, Townand Parish Council support.

Mrs Hunter told the AGM last weekthat funding for CAB services was ‘agood investment. She gave theexample of £20,000 from StratfordDistrict Council that funded a courtdesk worker who helped 117 localfamilies, 109 of whom were savedfrom eviction.

“It’s estimated that each evictionthat is avoided saves on average£16,500, so by preventing familiesfrom becoming homeless we havesaved nearly £1.5million for the localcommunity — that’s a high return onthat investment.”

The AGM was also told how ComicRelief awarded £54,000 to CAB andAge UK Warwickshire, and that overthree years the project helped 535clients and secured nearly £1millionof additional income for older peopleto make their later lives more comfort-able.

Mr Hunter added: “I hope bysharing these examples of high return,

our funders are more likely to askthemselves how can they afford notto support Citizens Advice and couldlook to increase the investment theymake in our services”.

Paralympic Gold medal winnerMegan Giglia was the guest speaker atthe AGM, and recalled the help shewas given at Citizen’s Advice, andhow it had been a massive part of herjourney since her stroke and brainhaemorrhage three years ago. Shewent from sleeping on a kitchenworktop in an empty flat in Stratfordto becoming the first British goldmedal winner on the opening day ofthe Rio Paralympics in the cycling.

A MEMBER of staff at Warwickshire Police’s communications centre at Leek Woot-tonswho drove her car while over the drink drive limit was sacked last week. KimCopson appeared before a misconduct panel having been found guilty at Leam-ington Magistrates’ Court in September of driving with excess alcohol while off duty.

Vehicles taking a bashing in car parksTHE everyday task ofparking in a car park has ledto two-thirds of motoristssuffering damage to theirvehicles, research carriedout by RAC Insurance hasfound.

More than a third (35 percent) of drivers reportedthat they had experiencedthis at least once and anunfortunate 31 per cent saidthey had had it happen onseveral occasions.

Of those who have beenaffected multiple times 28per cent say they haveendured it three times andnearly a quarter (23 percent) have seen it more thanfive times.

And, the number-oneplace for a motorist to havetheir car damaged is asupermarket car park, withhalf (48 per cent) sayingthis was where their carpicked up a scratch or dent.

Public car parks such asthose in town centres, atleisure centres and atlibraries were named by 16per cent of drivers, whereasshopping centre car parkswere blamed by 11 per cent.Work car parks and pri-vately operated car parkswere only mentioned byeight per cent and four percent of those surveyedrespectively.

In the majority of casesthe extent of the damage issmall — but not to saycheap to fix — with 44 percent saying their vehicleended up with a little dentor scratch about the size ofa golf ball. But a fifth (21per cent) reported theirdamage was the size of atennis ball.

Luckily, less than one inten (eight per cent) have

returned to their car to finda large dent or scratch thesize of a football. A quarter(25 per cent) say their carsuffered some type ofbumper damage rangingfrom small to large.

While the cause of carpark vehicle damage inseven in ten cases (70 percent) is thought to be acci-dental, the chances ofsomeone owning up to it isextremely rare with onlynine per cent of motoristssaying they found a note ontheir car from the personresponsible.

This, however, was not asurprise to most as 38 percent said they wouldn’texpect anyone to do theright thing and leave a notethese days. Forty-five percent were ‘disappointed’that the perpetrator didn’thave the decency to leave anote and 35 per centdescribed their reaction as

‘angry or upset’.Of the 70 per cent who

felt the damage was acci-dental half (53 per cent) feltit had occurred as a result ofanother vehicle hitting orscraping theirs while a third(32 per cent) believed it hadbeen caused by a car doorbeing opened onto it.Among those who thoughtthe damage was deliberate,46 eight per cent thought acar door was the cause anda third (32 eight per cent)said it had been keyed.

RAC Insurance director,Mark Godfrey, said: “We alluse car parks every day sothe chances of your carpicking up a dent or scratchare pretty high, especiallyas vehicles have got widerover the years whileparking spaces generallyhaven’t.”

The survey was asked of1,464 members of the RACOpinion Panel.

Next home game - Monday 5th December - Coventry City - BSC R2 - 7.45pm kick off

Time to learnlessons, AdamsSTRATFORD Town face high-flying Slough Town tonight,Tuesday, hoping to bounce back from Saturday’s defeat toBasingstoke.

For the second game in succession, Town failed to capi-talise from a winning position as they went down 2-1 at theArk Cancer Charity Stadium.

Richard Gregory scored his tenth goal of the season toput Stratford into an early lead, but Basingstoke equalisedhalfway through the first half and then hit the winner withten minutes to go.

Manager, Carl Adams, said: “We put so much into thegame and all the lads put in great shifts, but we are not man-aging games well enough at the minute. Twice in succes-sive weeks we have conceded goals on the counter-attackand we have to start learning from these errors.”

Town have a tough away trip at Merthyr on Saturday.
