Mr Rod Gard’nerWith Mr Fricker away on sabbatical, I have been appointed as Counsellor for Term 1. I have had many years of counselling experience at Burnside High School, Ellesmere College and, last year, at Unlimited Paenga Tawhiti.

I welcome both students and parents and reassure you that I will provide a confidential and caring service to anyone who sees me.

As a School Counsellor, I have also worked with many families, and look forward to the opportunity to meet with you. Please feel you can make contact with me.

My email address at school is: [email protected]

Mrs Amanda KingKia Ora. I have been teaching in New Zealand for six years now.

I was born and bred in Brisbane, Australia. I taught in Brisbane for a few years and then decided to head over to London for three years for my OE. I was lucky enough to experience teaching many different cultures and learning styles in London and to travel the world.

While teaching in the UK, I met my Kiwi husband who grew up in Hororata. We then both moved to Masterton where I was an Intermediate teacher for five years. Six months ago, my husband decided it was time to move back to the Mainland and go back farming for his family. I have now experienced living on a rural Kiwi farm, my first Canterbury winter and the snow!

I am looking forward to teaching here at Darfield High School and the exciting year ahead for 7AK.

Miss Jane HandleyI am the new Head of Social Studies and History for 2013. I am covering Mrs Lee whilst she is on Maternity Leave. I am really happy to be here at Darfield High School. I am from Wanganui. I grew up living on a farm and living in a small community similar to Darfield. I have taught in schools in Wellington, Wanganui, Cambridge (UK) and more recently in Christchurch. I look forward to an enjoyable year with lots of success in History and Social Studies.

Mrs Helen HumphreysHi. From a Cantabrian family, I have grown up on dairy farms in the Waikato. I enjoyed living in Christchurch while at University. I have taught in New Zealand and Australia and have also operated a tourist business in far North Queensland for five years. My 12 year old daughter, Lauren, has also started at Darfield High School. I enjoy tennis, renovating, cooking and gardening. I am looking forward to being part of the DHS team and to learning about and sampling the local flavours and styles from my students.

Mrs Humphreys will be in the Technology Department teaching Soft Materials and Food and Nutrition.

Mrs Rachel BalchinHi! My name is Rachel Balchin and as HOD of Music I am excited about building all areas of Music at Darfield High School. Last year I taught at St Andrew’s College, and prior to that at St Kevin’s College in Oamaru. I am primarily a trombone player, but also enjoy the piano, guitar and singing. I look forward to a great season of music at Darfield!

Miss Claire MorrisAfter finishing my teaching Dipolma at Canterbury University last year, I have been picked as the lucky teacher to teach History, Social studies and Health at Darfield High. I am settling in to the school nicely and I’m thoroughly looking forward to getting to know the students and wider community.

Mrs Judy ElvidgeI am married with four children and live in West Melton. I love sport and mountain biking and spending time with my family and friends. I have just completed contract Principal work in Southland and overseas. I have a wide range of experience in the Years 7 and 8 area and am really passionate about their learning. I am Dean of Year 8 and in charge of Literacy.

Welcome to our New Staff

Principal’s Comments

Here we go again … back into the school year with an enthusiastic group of new students and new teachers to welcome to our school community. Last week, we welcomed 121 new Year 7 students, 30 students from other year levels, and seven new teachers. It is important to the mana of our school that we do a good job of welcoming and caring for visitors and those new to the community. Our responsibility is to do what we can to help those new to the school settle in and feel welcome.

Every new year is a time of new beginnings, new classes, new teachers, and a chance for a fresh start. I hope that over the break students have had a chance to reflect on what went well last year (and to keep doing this) and what they need to do differently.

I have emailed to all parents a link to a short survey regarding our start of year processes. The start of the school year is a busy time for everybody so we want to identify how we can make this time as straightforward as possible.

Our year begins with a rush of sporting activity with several whole school events: triathlon, swimming sports and athletics. We welcome families to come and watch these events and enjoy the competition. As well there are some team sports underway such as volleyball and cricket. In order to enable the various team sports to occur, we often need the support of teachers, parents and others in the community with coaching and managing teams. Our Sports Co-ordinator, Mrs Armstrong, will let you know where help is needed.

James Morris

Welcome PowhiriMr Morris began by welcoming new staff and students to Darfield High School, ensuring them our returning staff are committed to supporting them as they find their way around the school. He acknowledged the skills staff are bringing to our school and the knowledge they have gained along the way will be valuable to the success of students here.

For new Year 7 students and students coming into the area from other schools, the Peer Support team will be there for them, providing confidence and skills to interact with their peers in a positive way.

Mr Morris stated that students can be excited about all the possibilities open to students here, “dreams can be fulfilled.” He urged them to look out for opportunities, to work hard and to have goals as they move through the school.

A lesson in hongi etiquette was given as many were unsure of the correct way to go about this and then, with the formal ceremony over, it was time for students and staff to share morning tea together and get to know each other.

“Let us meet, let us listen, let us speak, let us learn

together.”

Above is our wonderful Peer Support Team for 2013. These students, along with with junior teachers, work with the Year 7 classes, helping them to develop confidence, skills and knowledge to interact with their peers in a positive way. A programme has been set up during Terms 1 and 2 and this will provide a lot of fun for the Year 7s while they gain valuable skills to deal with school and teenage life.

Ms Ward is the teacher in charge of Peer Support and we look forward to bringing you more news during the year.

Top Art ExhibitionFrom March to September, 60 portfolios that achieved Excellence at NCEA Level 3 in 2012 will tour New Zealand. This allows the public to view the high calibre of work created by students. It also provides the opportunity for this year’s Visual Arts students to gain an idea of what they need to aim for in order to achieve Excellence themselves.

Emma Groom was ecstatic to learn she is one of the 60 chosen to have her Printmaking portfolio displayed in this exhibition. “All that effort and stress was well worth it,” she said. Emma also submitted a folio for Painting and received a Merit for her work, so she did exceptionally well, as she was also working hard producing the School Magazine.

Emma will be attending University of Canterbury this year working towards her Bacherlor of Commerce and majoring in Marketing. We are very proud of her achievements and wish her well.

Emma would like to acknowledge the help and support from her Art teacher, Ms Wendy Cox.

Congratulations to Yuki Senoo who also received Excellence for her Printmaking portfolio, Alana Fowler for Excellence in Painting, Sharni Karst for Merit in Painting and Ethan Patfield who achieved a Merit in Printmaking.

House Colours

It was obvious on House Mufti Day that 2013’s new House Leaders have the backing of their

teams this year

Overwhelming enthusiasm was shown by students starting the year off in a blaze of vibrant colour,

energetic chanting was at an all time record level, and there was no doubt the stage was set for a fierce

competition this year for the House Cup.

The points table will kick off with the Triathlon, Athletics and Swimming Sports, so it is important entries are

high; participation is the name of the game! Good luck everyone on another super

competitive year!

Dear Gregory

Merry Christmas! You are now the proud owner of an iPhone. Hot Damn! You are a good and responsible 13-year-old boy and you deserve this gift. But with the acceptance of this present come rules and regulations. Please read through the following contract. I hope that you understand it is my job to raise you into a well rounded, healthy young man that can function in the world and coexist with technology, not be ruled by it. Failure to comply with the following list will result in termination of your iPhone ownership.

I love you madly and look forward to sharing several million text messages with you in the days to come.

It is my phone. I bought it. I pay for it. I am loaning it to you. Aren’t I the greatest?

I will always know the password.

If it rings, answer it. It is a phone. Say hello, use your manners. Do not ever ignore a phone call if the screen reads “Mom” or “Dad.” Not ever.

Hand the phone to one of your parents promptly at 7:30 pm every school night and every weekend night at 9:00 pm. It will be shut off for the night and turned on again at 7:30 am. If you would not make a call to someone’s land line, wherein their parents may answer first, then do not call or text. Listen to those instincts and respect other

families like we would like to be respected.

It does not go to school with you. Have a conversation with the people you text in person. It’s a life skill. Half days, field trips and after school activities will require special consideration.

If it falls into the toilet, smashes on the ground, or vanishes into thin air, you are responsible for the replacement costs or repairs. Mow a lawn, babysit, stash some birthday money. It will happen, you should be prepared.

Do not use this technology to lie, fool, or deceive another human being. Do not involve yourself in conversations that are hurtful to others. Be a good friend first or stay the hell out of the crossfire.

Do not text, email, or say anything through this device you would not say in person.

Do not text, email, or say anything to someone that you would not say out loud with their parents in the room. Censor yourself.

No porn. Search the web for information you would openly share with me. If you have a question about anything, ask a person -- preferably me or your father.

Turn it off, silence it, put it away in public. Especially in a restaurant, at the movies, or while speaking with another human being. You are not a rude person; do not allow the iPhone to change that.

Do not send or receive pictures of your private parts or anyone else’s private parts. Don’t laugh. Someday you will be tempted to do this despite your high intelligence. It is risky and could ruin your teenage/college/adult life. It is always a bad idea. Cyberspace is vast and more powerful

than you. And it is hard to make anything of this magnitude disappear - including a bad reputation.

Don’t take a zillion pictures and videos. There is no need to document everything. Live your experiences. They will be stored in your memory for eternity.

Leave your phone home sometimes and feel safe and secure in that decision. It is not alive or an extension of you. Learn to live without it. Be bigger and more powerful than FOMO (fear of missing out).

Download music that is new or classic or different than the millions of your peers that listen to the same exact stuff. Your generation has access to music like never before in history. Take advantage of that gift. Expand your horizons.

Play a game with words or puzzles or brain teasers every now and then.

Keep your eyes up. See the world happening around you. Stare out a window. Listen to the birds. Take a walk. Talk to a stranger. Wonder without googling.

You will mess up. I will take away your phone. We will sit down and talk about it. We will start over again. You and I, we are always learning. I am on your team. We are in this together.

It is my hope that you can agree to these terms. Most of the lessons listed here do not just apply to the iPhone, but to life. You are growing up in a fast and ever changing world. It is exciting and enticing. Keep it simple every chance you get. Trust your powerful mind and giant heart above any machine. I love you. I hope you enjoy your awesome new iPhone.

Deans are often involved in resolving issues of students using phones the wrong way in class. Mr Thomson (Year 12 Dean) found this letter published in the NZ Herald over the holidays; it also summed up some of the conflict parents might be having.

The Library in 2013 still new, beautiful and vibrant!

We started the year by having a big buying day so there are boxes of NEW BOOKS being processed right now. Come in to see our displays and reserve the ones you want.

Remember to look at our blog at Library Online on the DHS website. On it you will see the covers of many of our new books and some of last year’s Book Spine Poetry entries, as well as useful information on the library and what we can do for you.

The most immediate item of interest is that we are lucky enough to have Bob Docherty coming on Friday 22 February to do his highly entertaining and informative “Books with Bob”

sessions. Most classes will get a chance to hear him that day.

One new display we have in the library is of Reader’s Choice books. These are books that readers have put a special book mark in to show that they are really good reads. If you don’t know what to read next - start looking here.

A librarian’s job is to help so Always Ask a Librarian if you need to know anything to get your year off to a flying start.

Looking forward to seeing you in here soon,

The Library Team.

Parking Outside SchoolWhile Police are targeting drivers who speed outside schools, we also need parents to observe the ‘No Parking Zone’ between the School’s front gate and bus bay. To keep our students safe, we need this area clear before and after school. There are signs indicating the restrictions.

Opposite Darfield High School on McLaughlins Road, car parks are marked out and broken yellow lines are painted outside resident’s driveways. Please ensure you park within the allocated carparks and not in front of residents’ driveways. Your co-operation in this matter is appreciated. There is usually plenty of space around the bend towards Bangor Road or south-west on McLaughlins Road.

PTSAWe are always looking for extra help and support to raise money

for the school. Please come along and meet other parents - we would love to see you. Our

first meeting will be held on Tuesday 19 February

7.45pm in the staffroom.

Any student wishing to travel on a bus which they are not enrolled on, must bring a note from a parent or caregiver requesting this, and give the note to the School Office before 11.15am on the day concerned.

Any student who will not be returning home on their bus is obliged to tell their Bus Monitor on the morning of the day concerned.

Bus Monitors: Bus Monitors are students who are trusted and valued by the staff. They have our full support. Know who your Bus Monitors are. If you have any issues at all, feel confident that they will help you. They have direct contact with Ms Tangney, the Bus Controller, to help with your concerns. If you do not feel you are able to talk to your Bus Controller in the first instance, see Ms Tangney.

Student Behaviour: Is of utmost importance.

In order to ensure orderly behaviour, the following guidelines are expected to be observed by all students:

• No behaviour which distracts the driver is permitted

• All body parts are to remain inside the vehicle at all times

• Nothing is to be thrown from the openings of the vehicle

• Students must remain seated throughout the journey

• Any form of bullying is unacceptable • No food or drink is to be consumed while on the bus • Yelling and abusive language are unacceptable • Politely follow any requests or instructions given by

the driver and Bus Monitors • When a breakdown occurs, follow the procedures laid

down for these situations. These will be outlined by the driver and the Bus Monitors.

Early Departure of Buses: The Principal will decide whether circumstances call for sending some or all students home early. When the decision to send one or more buses home early is made:

• The Principal will notify all students and staff affected, asking them to assemble at a convenient point under the supervision of a staff member

• Students will be required to phone a parent before they go home. If a parent cannot be contacted, arrangements will be made for the student to go to a neighbour or friend, until the parents can be contacted

• The Bus Controller will contact any other school affected to make appropriate arrangements

Bus Routines and Behaviour Accidents:

• Students are to remain seated and calm, awaiting instructions from the Bus Driver. Encourage others to do the same. Follow instructions from the Bus Driver and assist where possible to maintain a calm and orderly atmosphere

• If the Bus Driver is unable to give instructions, listen to the instructions of the Bus Monitors. If you are asked to evacuate the bus, do so in a calm and orderly fashion, one row at a time, starting from the front. Make sure you stay together as a group in the nominated space and don’t wander off

Be Safe on your Journey in the School Bus: Travelling on the bus to school can be fun - it is a great time to catch up with friends, and even do some homework. You can help make the journey safe for every-one on the bus:

• When you are waiting for the bus, stand back from the road

• Don’t text or listen to music through headphones. You need to concentrate on the road, the traffic and anything else happening around you. Wait until the bus has stopped before boarding single file. Don’t push and shove. Let the younger children go first

For Parents:

• If you are picking up students from the bus stop, meet them on the same side of the road the bus uses

• Have an alternative plan in case you are running late

• Always reduce speed to 20km/h when passing a stationary school bus

Bus Controller: Ms Tangney [email protected]

The speed limit when passing a school bus that has stopped to let children on or off is 20 km/h.

This rule applies to traffic on both sides of the road. The faster you go, the bigger the fine.

What’s it worth? A few extra minutes? A fine? A life?

Selwyn United Football Club Your New Club and Football Pathway!

For the last 5 years, Rolleston and Ellesmere Football Clubs have been working together under its umbrella organization, Selwyn Football. This management identity was formed in 2008 with assistance from Sport Canterbury and support of Mainland Football.

Since its inception, Selwyn Football has pro-actively pursued collaboration, consolidation and alignment for the betterment of all aspects of Football and sport in general within the wider Selwyn District.

It has been instrumental in providing juniors residing in Selwyn the opportunity to represent their District at annual Junior South Island Tournaments & Festivals. What used to be impossible but for a select few has now grown to Selwyn Representative fielding more than 10 teams, with 3 titles to its name in the last 3 consecutive years.

The already explosive population growth within the wider Selwyn District combined with the Canterbury Earthquakes is likely to see an unprecedented increase in player numbers spread over our vast geographical area. Selwyn has been the fastest growing district for 3 of the last four years.

Ellesmere and Rolleston Football Clubs, along with the Football hub at West Melton, have now joined forces and formed Selwyn United Football Club.

As the new entity, the club will continue to actively support the governing body and New Zealand Football in its implementation of the Whole of Football Plan, with fully compliant programs and pathways available for players from 4 to 84 years old at West Melton, Rolleston and Ellesmere Football Centers.

The highly successful First Kicks and Fun Football program piloted and run by stalwart Jym Findlay will continue for all players registered with SUFC, and after an initial 4-5 week introduction period expand out to the outlying football hubs within the district.

SUFC is delineating its activities as a Football Club for the winter season whilst retaining its commitment and support of Selwyn Representative Football for junior players residing in the Selwyn District through the introduction of a new playing strip (blue/black).

This week, English professional club Burnley has announced setting up an academy program in Canterbury in a bid to find players to follow in All White Cameron Howieson’s sprig marks.

Selwyn United Football Club is proud be one of only 4 South Island clubs to host the new initiative, which sprang from a meeting between SUFC Head of Coaching and ex Burnley coach Graham McMann, who recommended Howieson to the Lancashire club, and Burnley’s Youth Australasia program chief Paul Wozny, a UEFA A-license coach.

McMann and Technical Manager Martin Allen, both experts ex APFA Lincoln, will co-ordinate the Canterbury program which will be linked to the BFCAA academy run by Wozny in Perth, attended by more than 800 young players aged between 6 and 16 over the last 2 years.

Wozny said in a statement the Burnley scheme would be a “comprehensive coach education program” delivered to Canterbury club coaches by BFCAA staff. “It offers a 3-tiered progressive development system for grassroots players through to the very best talent to maximise their full playing potential”.

It allowed local players to “remain on home soil while receiving top-class coaching and a total football education from full-time, experienced coaches”.
