The Holocaust first phase
The death machinery created for the Holocaust took the lives of SIX MILLION
JEWS and FIVE MILLION OTHER PEOPLE
The strategy of the Nazis was to first separate the Jews from everyone else. In 1935, NUREMBERG LAWS defined
who was a JEW.
Although Hitler insisted Jews were a race, in the end RELIGION was used as
the criteria of Jewishness.
What mattered was RELIGION STATED BY GRANDPARENTS. In Europe, the government collects taxes to
support churches and synagogues. Everyone routinely declares his or her
religion. Government had records.
Anyone with at least two Jewish grandparents was declared a JEW.
A person who had TWO JEWISHGRANDPARENTS and did NOT
practice Jewish religion wasa MISCHLING Second Class
If a person had THREE JEWISH GRANDPARENTS and did NOT practice
the Jewish religion, he was aMISCHLING First Class
In Germany, Jewish teachers,
collegeprofessors and
other professionals lost their jobs.
Jewish children were
eventually forced into Jewish Schools
Jews had their passports andother identity
papers stamped with a J
In Germany November 9, 1938, is called the Beginning of the Holocaust.
Nazi thugs burned Jewish synagoguesand homes, beat up Jews, and broke
window of Jewish shops.
Called KRISTALNACHT = Night of the Broken Glass
Once Jews were separated from rest ofpopulation, transport to the ghettos
began.
Meanwhile Hitler hadInvaded the USSRIn June 1941. TheGerman army wasFollowed by EINSATZGRUPPEN(special squads)
who were taskedWith shooting Jewish
communitees.
The Einzarzgruppen killed about a million people but the Nazis were dissatisfied.
The method was SLOW and PUBLIC.
It “wasted bullets” and was “hardon the heroes doing the shooting.”
The Nazis looked at the gassingtechniques developed in their
Euthanasia Program.
First the Nazis tried GAS VANS.
Gas Vans were used to clear Camp atCHELMNO.
This was also too slow so the Nazis movedto fixed gas chambers which could kill several
hundred people at a time.
Three camps—Treblinka, Belsac, andSobibor—were used to kill Polish Jews.
They were ONLY for death.
Last stage was a combination of Death Camp and Work Camp.
Auschwitz and Maidanek were thesekinds of camps. Auschwitz became
more infamous.
