THE HERALD - JUNE/JULY 2015

I love being in the pastor’s office. I really have a prime location.

The windows of this office allow me to feel that I work right in nature among the beauty of God’s creation. I will admit to getting lost in

thought when spring is in full bloom. Every day, when I look out, I see flowers and plants coming to life again after a long cold winter, color

returns to the earth, trees bloom and the squirrels – well they could not be more ‘squirrely’ as they play, chase and run among our gardens. I have a

front seat to watch our garden angels and they take stock of what is coming back and what was lost through the winter. Soon our angels will begin the

process of removing the weeds and planting new flowers.

And yet, as I look out to our gardens, I am reminded that in so many ways the church is like a garden too. Every year at about this time, many of our “snowbirds” return to Michigan from warmer climates. It is always so good to see them return after a long cold winter, and as they arrive, I am sure they notice many of our beloved brothers and sisters who are no longer with us, but have gone on to be with God in his heavenly home. Garden plants are like that, too. They are here one year, and for whatever reason, gone the next. Returnees are always happy to say hello to perennial members they haven’t seen since last fall. Then there are new faces, like annuals, who have begun worshipping with us. Your pastor has been calling and meeting with a few of these new faces to help them feel that they are welcome to this particular garden of God. Together, I hope we all seek to weed out the ways that we get distracted from our primary focus, which should be our worship of God. I hope we all seek to find ways to plant new ministry, to reach out to our community with the gospel of Jesus Christ, to support our many mission projects, and nurture this particular household of God so that every Sunday we can leave feeling that we have experienced a sweet, sweet spirit in this place. Beloved, this church is one of God’s wonderful gardens both inside and out. Your pastor appreciates every angel who helps make the garden of FPC church so beautiful. Psalm 1 Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or take the path that sinners tread, or sit in the seat of scoffers; but their delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law they meditate day and night. They are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season and their leaves do not wither. In all they do, they prosper. My prayer for today is that we will become a Psalm 1 type of church/garden. Prayers for peace, Pastor Peggy

THE HERALD - JUNE/JULY 2015

The activities of the Personnel Committee may not be readily apparent to the congregation. The Committee thought we would explain our roles and responsibilities in this article.

The session . . . has the responsibility . . . to provide for the administration of the program of the church, including employment of non-ordained staff, with concern for equal employment opportunity, fair employment practices, personnel policies, and the annual review of the adequacy of compensation for all staff, including all employees. –Book of Order

To fulfill these responsibilities the session formed a Personnel Committee. This was several years ago. FPC’s Personnel Committee has been up and running for a long time!

The FPC Personnel Committee has the following responsibilities: • Recommend position descriptions for all staff. • Review and recommend to session the compensation

packages for all staff. • Recommend personnel policies to the session. • Encourage professional growth and development for all

staff. • Recommend to the session ways to manage risk

exposures. • Implement a plan of equal employment opportunities,

developed in consultation with the presbytery and approved by the session.

• Provide for a review process to assist in work planning. • Act as a support group for the pastor and other

members of the staff. • Confer with the pastor on any important issues of

concern.

Some of the issues we’ve had to address are: • Those related to our personnel policies. We are in the

process of reviewing and revising our personnel policies. • Questions of compensation • Job descriptions • Professional Development • Work planning and evaluation • Staff relationships • Study leaves and sabbaticals • Matters referred to it by the session

Your Personnel Committee members are: Bill Herhilan (elder-chair), Patty Lange (elder-vicechair), Julie Huttenlocher, Jenny Emerick, Daryl Martin, Jeanie Kirkum, Jeanne Ledingham, Alisha Baker, Pastor Peggy Casteel.

LET’S GO CAMPING!!! Make your reservations for FPC’s 3rd Annual Camping Weekend from July 10th-12th at Stoney Creek Metropark. Make your reservations by contacting Stoney Creek Metropark at 586-781-4242. Check out the Camp map by visiting www.metroparks.com. FPCers look to

camp in sites 1-21. Call the church office with your site number. Don’t delay… Ten families have signed up! It’s going to be another fun summer weekend of fellowship with good friends!

CANNED GOODS SUNDAY The first Sunday in June we are having a "Canned Goods" Sunday. Please bring non-perishable food donations. The children will collect them and bring them to the front of the Sanctuary where they will stay during the service. We are doing this to encourage donations and show our support for the Presbyterian Hunger Mission. We hope to continue this for all the first Sundays in the summer. We are trying something new, please participate. If you have feedback or other suggestions, please contact Linda Silvonen at [email protected].

CHANCEL FLOWER SPONSORS NEEDED Order chancel flowers in memory or in honor of loved ones, or in celebration of a special occasion. Sponsors are especially needed as several months have only one sponsor or none at all. Forms can be found on the office counter. A donation of $20 for each designated month helps cover the cost of the flowers. This is a lovely way to remember loved ones while also contributing to the beautification of our sanctuary.

And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God. ~Micah 6:8

THE HERALD - JUNE/JULY 2015

I MPACTIMPACTIMPACTIMPACT SENIOR HIGH YOUTH GROUP UPDATE It’s that time of year again! As in years past, our Senior High Youth Group has reached out to our

congregation for help with the cost of our annual mission trip. We know how blessed we are to be surrounded by a loving and supportive church family. Thank you so much for all you have already done this year by purchasing poinsettias and wreaths, or by attending the Variety Show in March.

For our last fundraiser before heading out on our trip to Hagerstown, Maryland, we’ll be taking donations toward sending our youth to Work Camp. “Shares of Love” provide a way you can make a donation in the amount of your choice and receive a post card from a work camper at Work Camp. You are supporting the youth with every donation that is made, no matter the amount. On May 31st, June 7th and June 14th our youth will be at tables before and after each service to receive contributions and well wishes.

Our group will be leading worship on Work Camp Sunday, June 14th, and you’ll hear more about the volunteer work that our group will be doing while on our mission trip. If you would like to send mail to us while we’re in Hagerstown, look for the pre-addressed, yellow postcards that will be available at both services on the 14th, or send a letter or package to the Presbyterian Church of Hagerstown, 20 S. Prospect St. Hagerstown, MD 21740. Also, we invite you to come and see us off on Saturday morning, June 20th, at 7:00 a.m.

This year’s senior high school participants include Nick Ansted, Sara Byks, Hannah and Jacob Campbell, Nina Ferri, John and McKenna Fisher, Jessica Geer, Joe and Sam Heaton, Shelby Host, Jake Huttenlocher, Tedi Jensen, Doug Jezak, Andy and Katie Kirkum, Alex Landuyt, Gavin McHugh, Abby Null, Alex Sobczynski, and Katelyn and Nathan Wilson. Advisors include Chris and Michele Kirkum, Paul and Jen Ferri, Ryan and Selena Warnke, and Jeff and Mary Anderson. This year, Pastor Dan will also be with us for his first Work Camp experience!

We’re looking forward to another memorable and faith-building mission trip. Please pray for us during our week away from home.

Members of the Prayer Shawl Ministry will be meeting once a month (on the 2nd Thursday) during the summer. Meetings will be at 10:00-11:30 a.m. in the parlor

on Thursday, June 11th, Thursday, July 9th, and Thursday, August 13th.

In addition to the special projects of FPC Prayer Shawl Ministry, handmade prayer shawls and lap robes are welcomed any time of the year. New members are also welcome any time of the year! Easy patterns are available if you need help getting started. Contact Mary Murphy or Carole Scharnweber for information.

A NEW MENU OF ADULT EDUCATION OPTIONS An Adult Education Committee led by Session member Roz Runnels has been formed: Gary Cynowa, Jan Davies, James Hopson, Andy Kindt, Joe Moore, Karen Norberg, and Lisa Rood. The Committee will soon have available a brochure of adult studies and discussion groups planned for this Fall.

FROM THE DESK OF KIM HEATON, FINANCIAL AND MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY The “cloud” is coming to FPC! In July I will be implementing ACS On Demand, which is a cloud-based (online) version of our financial and membership software. With ACS On Demand we will also be receiving Access ACS, which will allow any member who wants to, to log into their account online and view their giving history as well as edit their address or phone numbers! Eventually members will also be able to give their offering online via their account as well! In order to learn all I can about this exciting technology I will be attending the ACS Ideas to Impact Conference in Dallas May 26-29. I am looking forward to bringing back new information that will help me do my job better AND help the members of FPC! ~Kim

MILESTONE ANNIVERSARY! Jim and Nancy Murray celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary in June! They were married June 25, 1955 at the First Baptist Church in Mount Clemens (then on New Street). They are blessed with three sons, five grandchildren and twin great granddaughters. Let us wish them many more years of wedded bliss!

Ever wonder where you'd end up if you took your dog for a walk and never once pulled back on the leash? ~Robert Brault

THE HERALD - JUNE/JULY 2015

We have completed our first study using the book Christian Caregiving—A Way of Life, by Kenneth C. Haugk. The group was very verbal and no one sat back and just listened. We had many good discussions ranging from how God is the curegiver and we are the caregivers to pray, listen to the

word of God, and reach out to those who are hurting. We didn’t all agree on everything, but we did not disagree on much. Little encouragement was needed for joining in the discussions and the classes moved along quickly and everyone made a meaningful contribution.

Our first training class for our initial class of Stephen Minister’s will begin on Thursday, August 20th. The leaders are now beginning our search for members to be our first class of Stephen Minister’s. These will be evening classes and will begin at 7:00 p.m. and end at 9:00 p.m. There may be a few weekend classes. The dates will be announced later.

We are praying that people in our church will feel called towards this very important and much needed ministry in our church. Could it be you? If so, please contact one of the leaders, Jeanie Kirkum, Barbara O’Mara or one of our pastors to apply. We ask for your prayers. ~Barbara O’Mara and Jeanie Kirkum

THE VACATION MAP For the sixth year in a row, the popular Vacation Map will be hung so we all can see where you’ve been on your summer vacation! We won't be able to tag along on your trip, but we do hope you'll

think of us while you’re gone. We'd love to hear about the summer fun you're having! As you travel now through Labor Day, keep in touch with First Presbyterian Church by taking a moment to send us a postcard or two. As soon as we receive your card, we’ll hang it on a bulletin board in the Narthex along-side a big map of the United States. Then we’ll stretch a piece of colored yarn from your postcard to your vacation location on the map. Beginning Memorial Day weekend, don’t forget to regularly check the bulletin board to see where your church family travels for the next few months. It’ll give us a feeling that we're together even when we're apart. May your summer be filled with sunshine, family and safe travels!

Super Summer Sunday Specials We will begin our summer Sunday school on May 31st this year during the 9:00

a.m. service only. The children will go to worship with their families first and after the second hymn, they will go to room B104 for their Sunday School time. There are only 11 Sundays this summer and we need an adult volunteers to help our children with their classes. Please help with just one Sunday. The dates are May 31, June 14, 21, 28, July 12, 19, 26, August 9, 16, 23, 30. There is a sign-up sheet in the Narthex for you to help. The curriculum will be provided for you ahead of time! There will be four Family Sundays this summer. They are May 24, June 7, July 5, August 2, and September 6. On those Sundays the children will stay in church with their parents. Our preschoolers will follow the schedule of the Kindergarten through 5th graders for the summer. If you have any questions, please call Ms. Peggy.

Nursery and Toddler Rooms The new schedules for the summer and fall will be out in June. We can always use more couples to help in these rooms. Right now, each family only works every six weeks. If you would like to take a turn, please contact Sue Heffernan at 586-949-4907 or at church!

Vacation Bible School It’s getting closer! Our VBS “Kingdom of the Son” will be fun for everyone from July 19th -23nd. But, we need YOU to help. There is a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board by the stairs with many places for you to help. Choose one and sign up TODAY. Our general meeting will be on Thursday, June 18th at 7:00 p.m. for all those that are helping from snacks

to crafts, music to recreation! Youth Aides are needed too! Those youth who are entering 6th grade through 12th grade are encouraged to help at VBS! There are two Youth Aide training times-July 9th and July 16th from 6:30-8:00 p.m. Youths must attend one of these trainings in order to be a Youth Aide. Please sign up in the Narthex for which one you will attend.

THE HERALD - JUNE/JULY 2015

It's hard to believe that June is here. During the month of May we had that lovely changeable

Michigan weather including of all things...a small earthquake When was the last time that happened? We have reached that time of the year where graduations are almost over, weddings will begin, vacations are being planned and here at FPC of Mount Clemens we finish up our planning for MCREST. Yes, once again we will be hosting MCREST on Sunday, June 14th through the morning of Sunday, June 21st. We will be hosting up to 30 guests in the Family Life Center (our first time using it for this purpose) while using the kitchen/Fellowship Hall for cooking and meals. Please take a moment, double check the sign up board and see how you can volunteer a few hours of your time to help with this worthy endeavor. Just a little background information on MCREST, the acronym stands for Macomb County Rotating Emergency Shelter Team. Their mission is to provide homeless and displaced individuals the opportunity for successful transition to independence. These guests will spend up to 90 days in various congregations throughout Macomb County. Our guests will receive safe shelter during the evenings, showers, laundry service, meals including a brown bagged lunch, bus passes and most important, friendship as they transition back into our communities. MCREST Case Workers work with the individuals to develop a personalized housing plan and work on any barriers that prevent self-reliance including lack of income, poor money management, mental health issues, substance abuse and broken personal support system. When talking with our guests in the past, it should be noted that they enjoy our hot meals, warm smiles and friendly atmosphere here at FPC of Mount Clemens.

This year will be have a few new faces in familiar places: Wendy Schildgen will be the contact person for menu planning (so team captains look for a call from her about meals, menus, etc.), Beth Baker will be the contact person for laundry service, Rob Wilson will be working with security, Jodi Wagberg is our contact for hygiene kits, and Sue Heffernan and Jane Ethier to be co-contact persons for intake. Judy Jacobs, with the support of Pastor Dan is our MCREST contact and we on Mission will be helping out wherever needed. Those of course are just a few of the individuals working to make our guests stay a happy one. From the warm and friendly smiles of Amy Carmack and Joan Emerick as they head up the breakfast group, to Terry Capen who has

prepared the donation board where you can sponsor an guest for MCREST. Mission will indeed be on the move and we hope you will be there with us as you have in the past with your support for MCREST both with your time, talent and expertise.

July’s primary focus is the Second Mile Center of Detroit. During the month we’ll be collecting items for Second Mile Center for their health fair. A list of the items needed we be posted as soon as it becomes available. We have some items that have been collected throughout the year and leftover items from MCREST will be added to help with the Health Fair. The Health Fair held at the Second Mile Center provides 200 individuals a chance for health screenings and checkups. A little background on the Second Mile Center and its place in the Presbytery of Detroit…the Second Mile Center was formed eight years ago by Ruth Azar. The center is located in Detroit and provides a place for children in the community to go for tutoring, provides the community with free meals on Monday night, a place to play and to learn sign/mime ministry. The center provides volunteer opportunities, field trips, a “Needs Pantry,” and helps members of the community with job placement. Unfortunately, Second Mile Center has faced many challenges since opening, including as of March, being frequently broken into by thieves. A March news story aired by Channel 7 put the word out to those individuals breaking into the establishment that everything they have goes back into the community.

Sadly, Second Mile Center is also facing financial difficulties as well and may close at the end of the year. If you'd like to help Second Mile Center with donations please contact them at 313-245-5252. Please feel free to visit their website for more information on volunteering, donating through the Kroger program and other valuable information on Second Mile Center.

Yes, Mission is on the Move, MCREST in June, Second Mile Center in July and let's not forget the Tomato Garden throughout the summer for local food pantries and community at large.
