picked up from post offices were received at the Hawaii

Foodbank where nearly 500 volunteers worked

tirelessly for 6 hours with the warehouse staff to unload,

weigh, sort, box, palletize, wrap and store the collected

nonperishables. In the evening, Koala Moa Chickendinner plates provided by Kaiser Permanente were

served to all of the hardworking participants.

On the second Saturday in May every year, U.S. residents

donate nonperishable food items for letter carriers to

collect in a nationwide campaign to benefit community

food banks. While this tradition of community service

occurs annually, few of us are aware of how the NationalAssociation of Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger FoodDrive got started. The pilot drive in October 1991 emerged

from conducive engagements between AFL-CIO PresidentVincent Sombroto and Postmaster General AnthonyFrank which expanded into the biggest single-day food

collection in the country. Since its official conception in

1992 through last year, the NALC Food Drive has

contributed more than 1.4 billion pounds of food to feed

the hungry, particularly the children in need who don’t

have access to subsidized school lunch programs in the

summer. This year’s 24th Annual NALC Stamp OutHunger Food Drive held on Saturday, May 14, 2016, is

expected to exceed last year’s national total of 71 million

pounds, estimated to be worth $150 million.

In Hawaii, Letter Carriers have come together to benefit

local food banks: Hawaii Foodbank, Hawaii Foodbank –Kauai Branch, The Food Basket on the Big Island and

Maui Food Bank to provide food for pantries, shelters and

agencies. The statewide coordinated effort led by the NALCCommittee of Hawaii including Terry Kaolulo, HSALCPresident, NALC Food Drive Co-Chairs AdeleYoshikawa of the Pearl City Post Office, Cynthia Ichizakiof the Downtown Post Office, Clay Tamaki, CatherineLederer, The Hawaii State AFL-CIO, LCSP Director, and

Stan Markle, Director of Product Resourcing of HawaiiFoodbank organized with various unions and sponsors to

ensure the success of this year’s Stamp Out Hunger food

drive. During the week of May 9 approaching the event,

plastic bags sponsored by the Hawaii State AFL-CIO,McDonalds of Hawaii, Menehune Water Company and

Honolulu Freight Service were delivered to mailing

residences and P.O. Boxes statewide. In addition, nearly

200,000 announcements sponsored by the Hawaii StateAFL-CIO, McDonalds of Hawaii, Menehune WaterCompany and Service Printers Hawaii along with the

support of the DOE, HSTA and HGEA were distributed to

students at over 400 public, private and charter schools

across the state. The Hawaii State AFL-CIO’s LaborCommunity Services Program coordinated volunteers

consisting of HGEA AFSCME Local 152, HSTA-R and ILWULocal 142 retirees to meet at IBEW 1186 to assemble the

flyers for statewide distribution.

On March 19, 2016, the Hawaii Foodbank

warehouse transformed into a brimming hub to host

nearly 800 guests for an evening of Epicurean

delight. The 10th annual signature culinary event,Great Chefs® Fight Hunger showcased a brilliant

ensemble of over 20 of Hawaii’s culinary masters

that gathered to dazzle the senses and nourish our

community.

At this year’s annual

fundraiser, Great Chefs® FightHunger Ilima and Hibiscusticketholders were escorted to

their tables by our talented

and lovely title holders: Miss

Hawaii United Continents

Easter-Lily Smith, Miss

Kaka'ako Halialani Parish,

and Miss Diamond Head

Teisa Worley. Our IlimaPremium VIP table purchasers

– Mrs. Joan Bellinger, HFMFoodService, HMSA and TheShidler Group and their

guests – enjoyed table and

premium wine service under

the direction of Gary Managofrom Hilton Waikiki Beachand Hawaii Foodbank

volunteers. Our outdoor VIP

section was expanded again,

which allowed many HibiscusVIP guests to purchase tables

and sit comfortably with their

groups to enjoy the cuisine

and music under a special tent.

Guests chatted up local

celebrity chefs at restaurant

stations throughout the

warehouse and tasted

delicious creations like Roy’sHawaii Chef LyndseySimone’s Japanese hamachi

crudo with petite seafood salsa and preserved

lemon, Mac 24/7 Chef James Aptakin’s Thai grilled

kalbi steak salad, and 12th Ave Grill Chef KevinHanney’s Maui Rum and coconut braised Maui

Cattle Company Beef Cheeks with buttered taro

mash and Hauula Tomato relish. To complement the

cuisine, guests were served fine wines like the Honig

Cabernet from JMD Beverages and Ferrari-Carano

Chardonnay from Southern Wine & Spirits, craft

beers like Goose Island Summer Ale from Anheuser-Busch and Samuel Adams Cold Snap from ParadiseBeverages, and updates on classic cocktails like

Joey Gottesman’s “Fashionably Great” with

Paniolo Whiskey. Cold refreshments like Hawaii

Sparkling Water from Menehune Water and

Sumatra Dragonfruit Antioxidant Infusion from Bai5were also enjoyed. Guests finished up their culinary

experience with sweet samples like MWRestaurants Chef Michelle Karr-Ueoka’s Dessert

Surprise and Hilton Hawaiian Village Pastry ChefAmanda Anderson’s Kona sea salt cheesecake, and a

bold cold-brew coffee from illy.

Throughout the evening, stages inside the warehouse and

outside under the Hibiscus Tent featured live

entertainment by multi-instrumentalist Jazzy Jay, the

talented Osorio ’Ohana, sultry folk

and soul singer Tahiti Rey, veteran

rock group WREKT, and young

indie rockers The Fresh Preps.

The annual Silent Auction

featured many items, such as gift

certificates for culinary

experiences at venues like

Morimoto Waikiki, Orchids atthe Halekulani, and Michel’s atthe Colony Surf, cultural

experiences from places like Starof Honolulu Cruises & Events,Polynesian Cultural Center, and

Diamond Head Theatre, hotel

stays at Ala Moana Hotel and

Hilton Waikiki Beach, and

transit passes to ship vehicles to

the mainland from PashaHawaii. The hottest bidding war

was again over a pair of Business

Class Tickets from our Travel

Sponsor United Airlines.

The trend of the evening were the

colorful ribbons attached to house

keys on the necks of our guests all

night long. One lucky key would

unlock the Cellar Door and the

fantastic prize behind it: over five

cases of premium wines donated by

Fujioka’s Wine Times, JMDBeverages – Wine Division ofParadise Beverages, JohnsonBrothers of Hawaii, SouthernWine & Spirits, and Young’sMarket Company of Hawaii. The

night ended in celebration when the lucky winner turned

her key in the Cellar Door lock and won over 60 bottles of

outstanding wine.

A huge mahalo to our 2016 featured chefs, restaurants

and beverage distributors for their time, talent and

delectable dishes!

Great Chefs® Fight Hunger is an annual event

FEEDING OUR OHANA

The Hawaii Foodbank – Kauai Branch held its

27th Annual Food Drive on Saturday, April16, 2016. Our statewide effort was out in full

force with terrific volunteers, and this year

was especially a great success for Kauai—

exceeding last year’s total with $5,159.09and 2,506 pounds collected! We would like

to thank all of the locations: • Safeway – Kapa`a & Lihue• KFC-Lihue• Walmart• Big Save- Koloa, Ele`ele, Waimea• Princeville Foodland

St. Catherine Food Pantry has been involved

with Hawaii Foodbank-Kauai Branch for

about 6 years under the guidance of MarkWhitson. The volunteers were at Safeway-Kapa`a on the rainy Saturday morning, and

many of them have attributed the success of

the program to Mark’s work as Operational

Manager of St. Catherine Food Pantry. Within

a week, an estimated number 350 people,

180 of which are children under the age of 18

are serviced with approximately 3,000

pounds of feed during operative days in the

food pantry. If they didn’t have Kauai Branch

The Kauai Branch warehouse was filled with donations on May 14, 2016 for the 24th

annual NALC Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. Wes Perreira, Warehouse Supervisorreported 13,198 pounds of food donation were collected this year, an 11% increase

from the previous year’s total of 11,927 pounds. Out of the 15 post offices, the stations

that had the greatest amount of donations were in Kapaa with 4,966 pounds.

Thank you to all of the participating letter carriers and post office staff for theiramazing support to feeding Kauai’s hungry!

we do for the community greatly. It would

be difficult to feed these folks.” Eddie

also receive fresh fruits and vegetables

from farmers on island.

For nearly two decades,

Partners in DevelopmentFoundation has dedicated

their efforts deeply rooted in

traditional Hawaiian values

and practices to address

current affairs in ho‘ona‘auao

education, ahupua‘a in

environmental stewardship,

economic development and

community health. PDIF has

devised several programs

including Tūtū and Me and

Nā Pono No Nā ‘Ohana. The foundation’s first program

was established in 2001 as a free traveling preschool. It

has pioneered the fruition of Ka Pa‘alana Homeless

Family Education Program which works in partnerships

with agencies and the Hawaii Foodbank in the Leeward

coast. As a result of socio-economic conditions infused

with ‘ohana values, Grandparents or tūtū, are often the

primary caregivers of their young grandchildren. Today,

the effects of this program reaches hundreds of at-risk

children and their caregivers through a hands-on

curriculum provided in 28 communities throughout the

state: six on O‘ahu, twelve on the Big

Island, four on Kaua‘i, two on Molokai

and four on Maui.

Another successful program of PIDF is

Nā Pono No Nā ‘Ohana, a

comprehensive family education

program. The program is located at

Blanche Pope Elementary School in

Waimanalo where the

parent/caregivers and their children

attend together in an environment that

nurtures learning and promotes

education beyond reading and writing. This implementation

of the ahupua‘a system provides a great way for adults to

have fun while learning, playing and socializing.

While there are observable variances in the practices of

Hawaiian traditions and western values, both share

overlapping core concepts such as pa‘ahana (righteousness),

kela (excellence), alaka‘i (leadership), and ku i ka ni‘o

(achievement). The difference is in their philosophy: Rather

than drawing attention to individual achievements,

Hawaiians practice these values by striving for excellence

through hard work for the benefit of the group.

Helping to Feed Hawaii’s Hungry

hat a year

this has

been—and

it’s only half over!

Hawaii Foodbank has

been BUSY. Want to

know how hard these

good people work?

Here’s just a partial

list of the events they

pull off every year in order to keep the mission

alive and healthy:

Whew. That’s a lot. But there’s a

reason for it all—and we see it every

day in the eyes and the lives of the

people who need us.

We see the families who scrape

together the money they need for

rent and electricity… and food.

We see children who either are too

young to know how their parents

worry, or are old enough to wonder

where their next meal is coming

from.

We see kupuna, aunties and uncles

who pinch their pennies, yet can’t

stretch fixed incomes enough to

make it to the end of the month.

We see the homeless. We see those

who are just a step or two away from

homelessness.

We see men and women working

hard yet never quite able to grasp the

elusive brass ring of security.

We see Germaya, an orphan, with her

sisters and her brothers. They look

out for each other but they accept the

help of Pastor Charlie Lorenz,

Executive Director of Feeding Hawaii

Together. It’s a non-profit agency

that provides food, but also clothes...

and books. That’s right, books.

I like that. Feed and clothe the body,

nourish the mind.

When you become part of our Hawaii

Foodbank family, that’s exactly what

you’re doing. You’re helping us feed

bodies and minds, AND providing a

big helping of hope.

Mahalo, once again, for choosing to

help the Hawaii Foodbank and, by

extension, our entire Hawaii ‘ohana.

Because we don’t let family go

hungry. Because we care.
