May 2015 Rector’s Writ Spring continues to be a busy time for celebration, service, fellowship and growth. We had lovely Easter services in celebration of Christ’s resurrection and our redemption. The Easter story presents us with the promise of resurrection and renewal. It’s a certain and hope-filled promise that draws us like a compass to the ways of Christ. By the time you read this we will have welcomed the community to Grace’s 150 th Anniversary Open House on April 25, 2015. On April 10, 1865 The Rev. Levi Holden led Easter services for at least 24 families who became part of the formal organization of Grace Episcopal Church. The new group met in the homes of some members; in the upper room of a bank building at the corner of Main and Meridian; and for three years leased the Universalist Church on the corner of Spruce and Hickory Way and worshiped there. On June 17, 1873, the cornerstone of Grace Episcopal Church was laid. The building was consecrated by Bishop Gregory Bedell on April 10, 1883. In the late 1930s some major work was done to replace the west wall and to build a new roof with steel girders. Additions include the Parish Hall and Christian Ed wing; a major kitchen renovation; the handicap access project; and the sanctuary renovation in 2001. Now we arrive at where we are today. The historical facts are interesting, but what’s even more intriguing is to think about the people who have been part of this Grace Church family over the years. For many Easter and Christmas holidays, we’ve had families in the pews with three and four generations present. As much as we love the crosses, the altar, the wood, windows, and pews…we remember the Church is not the physical plant, the Church is the people. God has blessed and continues to bless Grace Church with faithful, self-giving, generous members. It takes all of us working together to build up God’s Church. Worship is not done alone, but in fellowship, in community. We worship, we work, we serve, we grow… together. We welcome all God’s people: from babies to great-grandparents, families, singles, gay, straight, seekers, skeptics, faithful church goers and those with no church background. We are “the body of which Jesus Christ is the Head and of which all baptized persons are members.” The Church is holy, not by our own doing, but because “the Holy Spirit dwells in (the Church) and consecrates its members, and guides them to do God’s work.” That’s part of what our Catechism (BCP, pg. 854) tells us about the Church. We remember who we are and whose we are, and that we’re all God’s children. Many things change in 150 years, yet “Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday, today, and forever.” May we be good stewards of this Church of God’s at Grace, and may we be guided by the Holy Spirit to faithfully do God’s work and welcome all God’s people. Rector’s Writ

Spring continues to be a busy time for celebration, service, fellowship and growth. We

had lovely Easter services in celebration of Christ’s resurrection and our redemption. The

Easter story presents us with the promise of resurrection and renewal. It’s a certain and

hope-filled promise that draws us like a compass to the ways of Christ.

By the time you read this we will have welcomed the community to Grace’s 150th

Anniversary Open House on April 25, 2015. On April 10, 1865 The Rev. Levi Holden

led Easter services for at least 24 families who became part of the formal organization of

Grace Episcopal Church. The new group met in the homes of some members; in the upper

room of a bank building at the corner of Main and Meridian; and for three years leased

the Universalist Church on the corner of Spruce and Hickory Way and worshiped there.

On June 17, 1873, the cornerstone of Grace Episcopal Church was laid. The building was

consecrated by Bishop Gregory Bedell on April 10, 1883. In the late 1930s some major

work was done to replace the west wall and to build a new roof with steel girders.

Additions include the Parish Hall and Christian Ed wing; a major kitchen renovation;

the handicap access project; and the sanctuary renovation in 2001.

Now we arrive at where we are today. The historical facts are interesting, but what’s

even more intriguing is to think about the people who have been part of this Grace Church

family over the years. For many Easter and Christmas holidays, we’ve had families in

the pews with three and four generations present. As much as we love the crosses, the

altar, the wood, windows, and pews…we remember the Church is not the physical plant,

the Church is the people. God has blessed and continues to bless Grace Church with faithful, self-giving, generous members.

It takes all of us working together to build up God’s Church. Worship is not done

alone, but in fellowship, in community. We worship, we work, we serve, we grow…

together. We welcome all God’s people: from babies to great-grandparents, families,

singles, gay, straight, seekers, skeptics, faithful church goers and those with no church

background. We are “the body of which Jesus Christ is the Head and of which all baptized

persons are members.” The Church is holy, not by our own doing, but because “the Holy Spirit dwells in (the Church) and consecrates its members, and guides them to do God’s work.” That’s part of what our Catechism (BCP, pg. 854) tells us about the Church. We

remember who we are and whose we are, and that we’re all God’s children. Many things

change in 150 years, yet “Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday, today, and forever.” May

we be good stewards of this Church of God’s at Grace, and may we be guided by the Holy

Spirit to faithfully do God’s work and welcome all God’s people.

UNITED THANK OFFERING May 17th

Please use the envelopes in the pews and on the table in back of the

church to take part in this spring’s ingathering. Any amount will be

appreciated. The United Thank offering has been part of the

Episcopal Church for many years and with funds collected it

enables us to help people from all over the world and in our own

communities. Take a box (they are on the table in back of the

church) and every time you’re thankful for one of God’s blessings

put a coin in the blue box. At the fall ingathering we will collect

those coins.

The Lord has risen! --- The Lord has risen indeed!

Alleluia, alleluia! Wow, what a beautiful Easter day

we had for which to celebrate our Lord’s

resurrection. The weather cooperated with a

beautiful early spring day. The church was full of

worshipers, the flowers were beautiful, the music

was wonderful, and the sermon was great. It was

good seeing all of Jim & Amy Neely’s family here

including two beautiful granddaughters. It was nice

to see EVERYONE who gathered to celebrate Easter

with us including: the Seman family, along with

Kay, Ralph, & Cary Wise; Mary Jean & John

McDonald’s son Mike and his family; the Ahrens

family, including Bruce recover ing from his

recent knee surgery, Fred Ahrens and his daughters

and grandson. What a blessing it is to have families

with three and four generations in the pews. There

were many people that helped with our Easter

celebration, especially Grace’s Altar Guild led by

Nancy Lundgren and those members &

volunteers who helped clean the altar area and set out

the flowers: Cindy Hoskins, Joan Seman, Carol

Marotta, Shirley & Mike Johnson, Bette Brooks

and Rev. Carol. Thanks to Marsha & Bill Snyder

for picking up flowers & getting them back to Grace

to be set out. Nancy Ervin served cake during the

8:00 & 10:00 coffee hours along with the scheduled

8:00 coffee hosts, Joan & Frank Seman, and the

10:00 coffee hosts, Steve & Susan Merrill. The choir

under the direction of Martha Croll and our organist

Tim Lewicki did a wonderful job with the music -

- so many compliments. Our acolytes, Eric Splinter,

Kevin Splinter & Jenna Summy did their usual

outstanding performance without a hitch. Eric

Splinter especially enjoyed the incense—he’s

become a very proficient thurifer. The children

enjoyed searching for Easter eggs throughout the

church. What a glorious day!! And those of us who

got to spend the rest of the day with friends and/or

friends made the day complete. Or maybe you

enjoyed a day to yourself. The office was very busy

during Holy Week with a service every day and

bulletins. You could have put a fork in Rev. Carol

and Marsha Snyder by the end of the week…they

were done!!...

Jenna Summy and Eric Splinter just finished

their theater productions of Shrek and The King and

I. And they were wonderful…

Bud Hughes is recover ing from open hear t

surgery at Akron City Hospital, and he’s glad to be

home…

Debbie Shorts and Rick Lashley spent Easter

on a Caribbean Cruise and they were part of a lovely

Easter service in very beautiful and warm spot…

Nancy & Fred Lundgren along with daughter

Lisa and granddaughters Taylor & Paige left

right after Easter to attend a funeral for a brother-in-

law in the Carolinas…

Organizer extraordinaire Barbara Popiel and 150th

Anniversary group have been working to make the

anniversary very special…

The Splinters were supposed to spend a huge

amount of time at the ballpark with Kevin playing

baseball, but the weather has not agreed. John &

Mary Jean McDonald have been at the baseball

field watching both grandchildren David & Sandra

play ball on two different field. Nancy & Fred

Lundgren have been at the track field watching

granddaughter Paige run…

Judy Canan and Carolyn Englert have

discovered their inner-child or have re-discovered it.

They are enjoying coloring books. Sounds like fun!...

Amanda Brooks has been asked to represent

her graduating class (2008) at the inauguration of

Hendrix College’s new president in mid-April. And

Bette Brooks is excited by the prospect of having

all four daughters in the same time zone this fall

when Beverly moves to Philadelphia for graduate

school. No more figuring out if it’s too early to call!

But Bette says she’s really going to miss Memphis’

great restaurants! Laurel Brooks is training for the

Cleveland Rite Aid Half Marathon and has been

known to do a 12 minute mile. This is her third half

marathon since late last summer.

Did You Know?...

The Bulletin Board FYI

There will be no Mother’s Day Flower Sale this year,

due in part to the proximity of the 150th Celebration.

If anyone is willing to step up and make it happen for

next year, Marcia Splinter will be happy to walk them

through the entire process, but she will not be able to

organize it any more going forward.

Thanks.
