In the second half of the IX century, Bulgaria was the equivalent of the German Kingdom and Byzantium. The cultural prosperity of the Bulgarian state during the reign of King Simeon the Great is called the Golden Age period.

borders of Bulgaria.

Events

894 - Simeon moved the main market from Constantinople to Thessaloniki.

904 - Bulgaria's borders

reached Thessaloniki (the White Sea) and Drach (The Adriatic Sea).

Chronology

In the summer of 896, the Simeon conquered a province with nearly 30 castles in Albania.

On 20 August 917 - near the River Aheloy Bulgarians achieved a great victory over

the Byzantine army.

In 924, today's western Serbia and Kosovo were annexed to Bulgaria.

In Preslav Simeon gathered the most talented Bulgarian writers. Under his care, they translated and wrote many books needed for the young Christian community.

The new capital Preslav was built with a new royal palace, beautiful churches and monasteries. Simeon the Great was a patron of literature, painting, architecture.

Bavaria

The territorial extension of the Frankish Kingdom was impressive.The head of the Franks was Charlemagne. He conquered Bavaria and divided the country by creating counties.

Charlemagne was also a patron of architecture and the humanities.

The great ruler led battles with nations of

Eastern Europe. He fought with the Slavs and some of them paid taxes. Charlemagne defeated the strong state of the Avars near the Upper Danube.
