academic excellenceOur basic educational model is decidedly

    old-fashioned: we match highly qualified

instructors with small classes and have them

work together to understand important books, challenging concepts and insightful theories.

small classesInstead of getting lost in the crowded

classrooms of larger universities, students at

    Southern Virginia University interact with

their professors in and out of class. The average

class size at the university is 16 students. In

an atmosphere of mutual trust, students grow

in confidence and skill as they are actively

    challenged through discussion and one-on-one

    interaction.

caring facultyThe dynamics of the small -class experience

helps draw highly skilled and credentialed

    professors to Southern Virginia University.

Our professors care deeply for their students

and are devoted to their success on campus

    and in life.

Set in the majestic Shenandoah Valley of the BlueRidge Mountains, Southern Virginia University

rests atop a tree-shaded hill in Buena Vista, Virginia.

excel in the classroomYou will be challenged at Southern Virginia University, but with support

from caring pro fessors and advis ers you will rece ive t he b est possi ble e duca tion .

At Southern Virginia University youll find a community of

faculty, staff and students committed to providing you with the

    best possible undergraduate experience.

When you come to the only private liberal arts college dedicat-

ed to educating Latter-day Saints and those with similar stan-

dards and ideals, youll find yourself among others who seek both

    spiritual nourishment and academic excellence.

We believe that participating outside of the classroom is just

as important as interacting in the classroom and reading great

books. Whether you use your time here to prepare for graduate

school, a successful career, parenthoodor all threeyou canparticipate in athletics, performing arts, student government or a

host of other extracurricular activities. Everyone is involved.

    Its all about the experience.

career prospectsA Southern Virginia University education

serves as a bridge to a meaningful career,

advanced degrees and a lifetime of learning.

Because a liberal arts education emphasizes

the development of analytical and critical

    thinking skills, Southern Virginia graduates

excel in a variety of challenging academic and

    professional settings.

    Employers in our competitive global

economy want to hire people who can analyze

complex information from a variety of

perspectives and draw from a broad foundation

of knowledge. Our graduates are admitted

to law schools, medical schools and graduate

programs at universities like Oxford, Cornell,

Purdue and the University of Southern

California. Our students find jobs with major

corporations like GE, Goldman Sachs, Rolls-

Royce, DeWALT and Microsoft, or with non-

profit organizations like Habitat for Humanity

and The Foundation for a Better Life.

majors and minorsA liberal arts education will equip you with

general knowledge and understanding of the

letters, arts and sciences, and you can choose

to focus your studies in one of a variety of

    majors and minors.

    Southern Virginia also offers courses

designed for students who plan to attend

    medical school or law school.

As a liberal arts institution Southern Virginia

University focuses on the best western

civilization has to offer. Our rich general

education program will immerse you in the

study of great human accomplishments inthe letters, arts and sciences. You will study

Greek, Roman and European works that helped

lay the foundation upon which our modern

    political, economic, scientific and artistic

thinking is based. Youll learn how to think

    critically, analyze information rigorously and

    communicate ideas effectively.

Compared to large private and state schools

in the United States, Southern Virginia is

intentionally smaller, has a lower student-to-

faculty ratio and encourages more interaction

between professors and students. If you apply

yourself at Southern Virginia you will leave

with a broad base of knowledge from which to

pursue diverse career paths and adapt to the

    ever-changing world.

    liberal arts:learn how to think

[At] Southern Virginia, the study of philosophers likeAristotle and theologians like St. Augustine and ThomasAquinas gives students a ground for moral and politicalreflection considerably deeper than the cafeteria-styleofferings of most secular schools.

thrive in an LDSenvironmentToday, the typical college student is oftenxposed to immorality, substance abuse

nd spiritual malaise. Many colleges and

universities are indifferent toward or intolerant

of students with religious beliefs and

tandards. Young people who choose to uphold

he tenets of their faith often stand alone.

This is not the case at Southern Virginia

University. The defining feature of our

ducational model is a commitment to the

eachings of The Church of Jesus Christ of

Latter-day Saints. Gospel principles are at the

enter of everything we do. The university

    ponsors firesides and weekly devotionals.

Classroom discussions are informed not only

y textbooks and the best of secular thinking

ut also by scripture and the teachings of

    Church leaders.

The Church has organized five wards for

oung single adults to serve Southern Virginia

tudents. Our campus is home to the Church

    Educational Systems largest daytime Institute

of Religion in the eastern United States. In

2009 the Church finished a new student ward

nd Institute Building right on campus.

Since its transition to an LDS environment in 1996, the universitys enrollment has grown

en-fold from 70 to 700. Our students have come from 49 states and more than 40 countries; 96

    percent of them are LDS.

honor codeAt Southern Virginia University youll enjoy

living in an atmosphere that is conducive

to feeling the Spirit of God. Although the

university is not owned or operated by The

Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,

we espouse the standards and tenets of the

Church and follow an honor code based on its

teachings. With students, faculty and staff

dedicated to living high moral, ethical, dressand grooming standards, opportunities abound

    for academic and spiritual progression.

The Southern Virginia honor code seeks to

ensure students live and study in an uplifting

setting. We uphold the core standards of

    integrity, chastity, morality, modest dress

and abstinence from all forms of pornography,

gambling, alcohol, tobacco, tea, coffee and

    illicit drugs.

    Nourish your spirit just

    as regularly as you nourish

    your body or mind. Don't

    neglect study of the gospel

    and activity in the Church

    during the period of your

    schooling. It is needed then

as much as or more than at

any time during your life.Elder Dallin H. Oaks

on the court, mat or fieldIn addition to promoting good physical health,

participating in athletics can contribute directly to the

refinement of your character. More than 40 percent of

Southern Virginia students participate on one or more of

    our intercollegiate or club teams.

Our athletic programs require integrity and discipline

and teach students to apply the skills they learn on the

court, mat or field to the classroom and other aspects of

    their lives.

The Southern Virginia Knights have claimed more than

    30 small-college national championships, succeeding in a

wide variety of sports. Our athletic program is a member

of the USCAA, a provisional member of the NAIA, and

also competes against NCAA Division I, II and III teams.

    The Southern Virginia athletic

    program currently includes: Baseball,

    Basketball (m/w), Cross Country (m/w),

    Football, Golf (m/w), Soccer (m/w),

Softball, Tennis (m/w), Track & Field

    m/w), Volleyball (w), Wrestling,

    Lacrosse (m club), and Cheerleading

    m/w).

outside theclassroomMany students who decide to attend large

    universities give up the extracurricular

ctivities they pursued in high school.

At Southern Virginia, you can continue

developing the talents in which youve already

nvested time and effort and maybe take on

    omething new.

Art is an indispensable medium for self- and

spiritual expression. If your passions include

theatre, music, dance, painting, photography or

sculpture, there are opportunities at Southern

Virginia University to develop your t alents

further. Our visual arts, music and theatre

programs provide students with a foundation

in theory and history, magnified by practical,

    hands-on training.

Students from every major are encouragedto participate in Southern Virginias
