Strategies for Studying Content Using the FRAME

Effective ways to use the FRAME to study the important content and to pass the tests.

Always keep the key topic in mind Mentally list the essential details per Main Idea using a mnemonic

Identify why each detail is essential to understanding the main idea

On an index card, write down the main words of the Key Topic to refer to while reading in the text.

Look for words in the Key Topic while reading in the text to alert you to important information to remember

Identify how the Key Topic connects with the Unit Paraphrase (in a Unit Organizer) or “Bigger Idea”

Identify other sources beyond those required readings that can extend learning about the Key Topic (e.g. internet sites, supplemental readings noted in reference lists)

For each essential detail, check other notes for clarifying details or information that can help with understanding.

Consider how each essential detail directly impacts the related main idea.

Consider whether each essential detail is based on a provable fact, opinion, or cultural expectations, etc.

Consider the cause-effect relationships between the essential details and its related main idea.

Self-Review each main idea’s set of essential details by recalling the mnemonic.

Create a mnemonic that can use the “LIST” steps (See First Letter Mnemonics Strategy).

Keep the mnemonic as simple as possible (See First Letter Mnemonics Strategy and use “FIRST”)

Prioritize essential details according to importance before creating a mnemonic.

Ask: How can this Key Topic relate to other topics or Units covered in this class? To other topics in other courses? How does the Key Topic apply to life today? How can one relate to the Key Topic personally? What does it mean to me?
