1. The Holy Spirit is a Person.O He is not a “power” or a “thing”.O John 14:17

“…the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be[a] in you.”

Page 5: The Forgotten God

2. The Holy Spirit is God.O He is not a lesser or different kind of Being than

God the Father or God the Son.O Spirit and God are used interchangeably in the

New Testament.O Acts 5:3-4,

“Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land? Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.”

3. The Holy Spirit is Eternal and Holy

O He is not a whimsical Spirit who comes and goes like the wind. He is an eternal being.

O John 14:16,“… And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—”

4. The Holy Spirit has His own mind, and He prays for us

O Often times we do not know what to pray about, but the Holy Spirit intercedes for us on our behalf.

O Romans 8:27,“And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.”

5. The Holy Spirit has emotions.O God is the creator of emotions. The Spirit

grieves when there is a breach in relationship. Did you ever think that your sins pains the Holy Spirit so much that it grieves?

O Ephesians 4:30,“And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.”

O Isaiah 63:10,“Yet they rebelled and grieved his Holy Spirit. So he turned and became their enemy and he himself fought against them.”

6. The Holy Spirit has His own desires and will.

O We are reminded who is in control. The Spirit has a plan for our lives, for each of us.

O He has a plan for the church, including your individual church body and the worldwide body.

O 1 Corinthians 12:11“ All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.”

7. The Holy Spirit is omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient.

O Omnipotent = All-powerful (Zech 4:6)O Omnipresent = Present everywhere

(Ps. 139:7-8)O Omniscient = All-knowing (1 Cor.

2:10b)O Isaiah 40:13

“Who can fathom the Spirit[a] of the LORD,    or instruct the LORD as his counselor?”

How does the holy spirit help us?

O By the Power of the Spirit we put to death the misdeeds of the body. He sets us free from sins we cannot get rid of on our own. This is lifelong process we entered into with the Spirit when we first believed. (Ro 8:2)

O Through the Spirit we are adopted as sons and daughters which leads us into intimacy with the Father. (Ro 8:15-16)

O The Holy Spirit convicts people of Sin. He does this both when we enter into a right relationship with God and as we journey through life as believers (Jn 16:7-11, 1 Thess 1:5)

O 8. In what ways do you grieve the Spirit? (see Ephesians 4:30 and context)
