Beep... beep....beep...went the instant teller machine as I started to walk away from it. Oh no!Don't tell me I've forgotten something. I muttered.

Do you need more time?the words flickered on the screen. I pushed the No utton and retrievedmy card which I otherwise would have forgotten. "ear with me there's een a death in the family. I

said to the man waiting ehind me as I fumled with getting my card ack into my wallet. I'd forget myhead if it wasn't attached.

#he instant teller proaly wasn't the only thing to have made a slow eeping sound that morning.

I was feeling hungry ut I didn't want to stop. I did what I had to$ walked all the way downtown tookmoney out of the ank and %ust turned around and went home listening to &"& radio the whole waythere and ack.

It was a program aout lawyers and mental health. Did you know that of all professions lawyers havethe fourth highest suicide rate. ainly ecause they're supposed to e stoic and not show any emotioneven though they are constantly e(posed to highly emotional situations.

I had my money and that was that. I'd taken out )*+, and only had )*- left in my account. t least Irememered that I still had %ust over )*,, left of my merican money left over from my last carouselconvention.

/ittle did I know the night efore that the day after this one I'd e taking off on an emergency Niagaratrip and definitely not under the most pleasant circumstances.

I was still sound asleep the first time 0anette had phoned and Dave wasn't home to answer ecausehe was at his leg appointment.

I forgot who phoned who when I finally got in touch with 0anette. 1verything %ust felt surreal. 2er dad

had %ust passed away at 345, that morning. 6he and her rother ichael oth left the workplacetogether and stopped in %a( to pick up his wife argaret. #hey had to go to illrook to makearrangements at the funeral home.

0anette proposed the idea of us taking off for Niagara tomorrow. 2er rother would drop her off at myplace and we'd spend the night here.

It was a strange day. I rought my suitcase out of the garage ut hadn't packed it yet. I had no ideahow long we were going for or what to ring. I spent most of the day working on my emroidery while Ilistened to "oy 7eorge and then watched a couple episodes of Ugly Betty.

I put a 6t. 2uert's chicken pie in the oven when 0anette phoned to let me know when she was

arriving. I figured if she was still hungry when she got here I could always heat up the rest.

6he arrived shortly after 84,,. "oth of use have een feeling strange like everything has een going inslow motion.

    9e made our hotel reservations shortly after she arrived. 9e looked up the &lifton 2ill &omfort Inn onthe computer I made the phone call and she handed me her credit card. 0ust as I was aout to givethe receptionist the numer the damned smoke detector started lipping so I had to drop everythingand gra the room to un:eep it. 9hen I sat ack down we had a moment of panic ecause as aresult of this distraction I misplaced the credit card. &an I call you ack;

6ure enough the moment I hung up the phone I found the card right ne(t to my mouse! 6o I hit redialto compete the transaction.

/ater that evening 0anette was on the phone with her friend &athy and her cell phone started to eepecause it was losing attery power. 6he fumled frantically for the recharger and erupted into theworst meltdown I've ever actually seen her have in person violently flailing from side to side as shespilled everything out of her ag onto the floor. 6he finally did find her recharger in another ag in the

edroom so she could plug it in and continue her conversation in the athroom ut oth Dave and Iwere really scared. I was terrified that we might have to cancel our trip and ook her into the hospital.9hen she'd een having her meltdown we were scared she was going to totally lose control and trashthe place.

9hile she was on the phone in the athroom I managed to pick up everything that had een thrown onthe floor. Including ama pple. It would have een the end of the world if 0anette's favorite i

8:41 pm7ordon "ennet!! It feels so much later than it is!

9e arrived at the hotel at around +4,, and %ust flopped down on our eds for a %olly good rest. It haseen so nice and peaceful in this room and these eds are so comfortale. It was %ust so nice to vegout for awhile and en%oy the peace and Cuiet for the ne(t hour so glad we finally made it here.

9e finally left our room and headed down to ?elsey's for supper at around 4,,. 9e %ust felt sopeaceful and mellow as we en%oyed the view of &lifton 2ill and the colourful music that was playing.9addle and Dotty %ust had to get up and dance. #he menu had changed since the last time we werehere. 0anette ordered the tomato asil penne and I had some kind of urger with a fancy 6panishname. I forget what it was called ut it had acon and avocado and I was ale to reCuest it on apretBel un. It came with fries of course which I had with mayonnaise the real Dutch way.

It's a good thing we had an early supper ecause %ust as we were leaving a family with a aaayeehad to arrive right across from us!

9e then drifted along from gift shop to gift shop. In the convenience store 0anette ought me one ofthose purple I E5 Niagara #:shirts that I'd een wanting and we stocked up on a few goodies. I've had

a craving for #wiBBlers and those sour cream and onion rings. 2aven't een ale to find the latteranywhere. nd I've een on the lookout for more patches to add to my collection. 6o far every store I'deen to only has &anadian flags or maple leaves. I want patches that specifically say Niagara =alls.

9e made our way up one side of the street and down the other disappointed to discover that the drugstore was no longer a drug store ut a more uer gift shop. #hey didn't even have magaBinesanymore %ust clothing and sports merchandise. I was noticing a row of teddy ears with hockey logoson the ottom shelf ut none of them had "oston "ruins logos or I might have ought one for Dave.

9e soon found ourselves at the 6ky 9heel. It looks so magical all lit up at night.

#his was the first time I'd ever ridden it at night and I en%oyed seeing all the colourful lights everywherealong with &lifton 2ill and the illuminated =alls as well as a uilding on the 6tates side that lit up I allkinds of rilliant colours. fter the commentary played over the speakers the music egan. It was aninstrumental version of the "eatlesIn My Lifewhich I knew all the words to and sang along.

I guess I got my ?araoke fi( after all in the most unlikely place. It seemed a fitting triute to 0anette'sdad and an anthem to our survival as if it had een specifically chosen %ust for us.

9hen that song ended a eautiful piece of classical music egan. 9e've heard it efore ut don'tknow what it's called or who composed it. I will ask aout it when I post the video on Jou#ue.

9hen our ride was over we continued along down &lifton 2ill. #he =udge =actory was closed ut at

least we knew it would e open in the morning. 9e found ourselves at the arcade where we tried ourluck at the claw game until we gave up in frustration. Or at least I did. I couldn't even get it to gra apiece of candy. I think the smaller claw is supposed to keep going until you get something ut I didn'thave the patience. I was getting sensory overload and ecoming an(ious to leave.

9e made our way to the ig gift shop on the corner where I finally found a small oval patch with apicture of the =alls. 6till no sour cream and onion rings ut I did uy a couple ags of pork rinds. Idon't have these very often.

It felt later than it really was and we found ourselves gearing down. #he walk ack to the hotel didn'tseem to take as long as it did last time we were here together for 0anette's irthday last year. In factcompared to the rutally cold weather we ad last year this has een a tropical heat wave!! I didn't

even other with oots today and I proaly would have roasted if I'd worn my green coat instead ofmy #echnicolour Dream &oat with all its patches.

Once ack in the hotel we flopped down on our eds and rested for awhile. y feet ached so I wasmighty glad of a darned good soak in the athtu. 7o figure. #his has literally een my first ath ofA,*. >p until tonight all I've had is showers. I've een trying to get myself used to pretending I don'thave a tu ecause there are NON1 at the place we're staying for this year's carousel convention.

#he acoustics in the athroom were amaBing so I en%oyed singing while I was in there.

9hen I was done we en%oyed some of the goodies we'd ought. I had a few maple cookies and some#wiBBlers efore I rushed my teeth. It's so nice to e ale to go at our own pace and have a room

with an O/D:=62ION1D phone that has a NO@/ amount of uttons unlike the techno:nightmare we had in our New Jork hotel room. 9e don't even N11D to use this phone ecause wedon't have to worry aout wake:up calls.

    I WANT BOY GO!G"# !OB$$$$%

#hat has to e the official catch phrase of this tour!

9e woke up at roughly around -4,, am got dressed and dragged ourselves to the reakfast uffet. tthat moment we wanted coffee more than anything else in the world.

9e had waffles for reakfast. 0anette went first. #his time we rememered the rule aout making surewe sprayed the waffle iron. Or at least 0anette did although I had to remind her not to forget the topone. It was still written on the instruction card in my handwriting from last year's visit in order to savefuture guests from further tragedy like I'd had the first time I used it.

9e felt kind of daBed and discomoulated as we navigated our way through reakfast. I finished mywaffle and had some scramled eggs.

I wish there could e a happy ending to this story. I feel urnt out. I feel...so..fucking..urnt..out!!#a(urday, January 24(h

0anette arrived ack here shortly after Aam. I was surprised to hear her fumling at the door ecausethe people at the hospital told me they were going to phone to let me know when her ca was arrivingso I could meet her at the loy and help her with her ags. Not that she had any anyway.

/ast night feels like it wasn't real like the whole e(perience was a ad dream. 9e must have eentotally wiped. I drifted off into an e(hausted slumer the est I've had all week here. It was almostNOON when we woke up. It would have een too late for the reakfast uffet.

9e didn't even other to get dressed. I pulled on some track pants over my ?I66 nightshirt and0anette %ust put her coat on over her pa%amas. 9e didn't even other with socks. I had to stop at thefront desk to get another key card ecause we lost the cards in last night's shuffle.

It didn't help that the guy who helped us carry the luggage to our room last night was totally ruing0anette the wrong way. 2is attitude e(acerated the situation causing things to escalate.

On the way to #im 2orton's we saw #2@11 ay strollers in a row cross the street.

    I didn't know what I wanted so at first I thought I'd %ust have whatever 0anette was having. "ut I didn'twant chili.
