e Dear Neighbours,

HAPPY NEW YEAR!I hope you all enjoyed the festivities (or maybe you still are) and you’re now raring to go in 2015. As always, I’m writing my New Year Editor’s Note before Christmas has even taken place and until this issue is put to bed only then can I think about preparing for Christmas myself. Having just come back from the Edenbridge Spectacular (organised by the Eden Valley Chamber of Commerce) it has put me in the mood to start feeling festive and I really can’t wait.

We were treated to another magnificent Bonfire Parade this year and despite the persistent rain there were still hoards of people out to enjoy the spectacle. I do enjoy the traditions we have in the Eden Valley and my friends from other places are always amazed at how much goes on here.

One of my personal successes last year was in my role as Networking Coordinator for the Chamber of Commerce. There were around 25-50 local businesses attending the events and the feedback I received was great and made it all worthwhile. I’m organising more events for this year and highly recommend any local businesses who are interested in coming along to one of these to get in touch with me.

I hope you enjoy this issue and I’m always happy to receive comments and suggestions from readers. Without the readers this magazine wouldn’t exist and I always appreciate all the support from everyone.

Don’t forget, there are many pages included in this magazine for the sole purpose of supporting the community. These pages are FREE to local groups and organisations to promote themselves, their events, put requests out etc. All you need to do is get in touch with me by the relevant deadline (contact

e details at the end). The copy deadlines for 2015 are:

March/April issue: 30th January May/June issue: 2nd April July/August issue: 29th May September/October issue: 31st July November/December issue: 2nd October

The prize crossword in the last issue generated the most amount of entries I think I’ve ever received for a crossword since I started the magazine in 2005. I had some feedback that the crossword was easier than normal although I wouldn’t know as I’m really no good at crosswords at all. Have a go at this issue’s prize crossword and you will be in with a chance of winning some fabulous metallic temporary tattoo’s from Streak, a business my

young, entrepreneurial cousin has recently launched. I think they look very elegant and stylish and soon everyone across the country will be ‘streaking’ when they go out! Well done Ella.

I hope you enjoy this issue and, as usual, don’t forget to mention The Edenbridge Directory if you are responding to anything you’ve seen featured in this magazine as it helps secure it’s future.

Happy 2015!

re appearances - Transforming the way we look Pt 3Here I am, back again in the comfortable home clinic of Gillian Huntley, an Aesthetic Therapist, to undergo some further treatments so I can give you a real insight into how they feel and what the process involves...

Gillian has been in the beauty industry for over 25 years and has specialised in Advanced Aesthetics for over 15 of those. She works closely with highly recommended Cosmetic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgeons,

nurses, technicians and consultants and many salons and clinics in Kent and the South East as well as London Harley Street.

While her main place of work is at her home clinic in Chiselhurst, she is often in the local area as she has close links to Options Beauty Salon in the High Street. She recently held an evening event there in order to demonstrate the techniques she uses during her treatments.

There are many different types of treatments Gillian performs - skins peels, scar relaxation, specialist waxing, thread vein/pigmentation/skin tag removals, Semi-Permanent make-up and medical tattooing and these treatments can really transform people’s lives and boost their confidence.

So far Gillian has removed clear moles from my face and neck, millia from around my eyes, skin tags from my face, and given me beautiful semi-permanent eyeliner. It’s all well and good Gillian spending time making my skin look lovely but I’ve started to realise that perhaps I should be doing a little more to help myself too.

This time Gillian started with a tailored facial and skin consultation. She was able to point out to me where I suffered dryness (did you know there is oil-dry skin and water-dry skin?), upon examination of my ‘T zone’ area

- the area that is generally oiler than the rest because more oil glands are located here - Gillian gave me some tips and tricks on what I can do to help myself to look after my skin better and what to use on it. She used one of her cleansers and demonstrated a lovely facial cleanse using her finger tips followed by removing the cleanser with two sponges soaked in warm water. My skin felt very radiant after the

experience.

Each facial is tailored to her client’s individual skin needs and she’ll never give you the same facial twice. Gillian also provides you with product samples and sponges to take home in a goody bag.

As you would expect, Gillian does have her preferred range of products - Image Skincare - which as well as being really good, it also includes an organic range and is completely free of the chemical preservative ‘parabens’.

As well as facials Gillian also performs skin peels which can help with many different conditions such as acne, rosacea, pigmentation and orange peel skin. The products she uses encourage skin regeneration using the latest ‘stem cell’ technology.

After my relaxing facial had finished, I waited patiently as Gillian prepared her electrolysis machine ready to attack my red veins or Telangiectasias, spider veins, as they are medically referred to. The main target areas for Gillian were my cheeks and nose!

As with any treatment involving a ‘probe’, Gillian always shows her client the sealed packet the probe comes in so you know it is clean and sterile.

I had been getting used to having numbing cream applied to my skin before the previous treatments I’d had with Gillian but she explained that for this particular one, red vein removal, it wasn’t possible. This did make me feel a little nervous realising I didn’t have the protection of the numbing cream to reduce any potential

pain I might feel during the process.

The actual process works by heat from the electrolysis probe evaporating the vein in the same way the sun evaporates puddles.

Well, I needn’t have worried, it wasn’t too painful at all and felt more like little prickling sensations on my skin. The only sensitive area for me was around the side of my nose and the tip of my nose particularly made me flinch but it didn’t take too long for Gillian to complete

her work and we were done.

The final part of the treatment involved cooling down my face and this was done by applying cool cotton pads making my skin feel much relieved as it was tingling. We then went over the aftercare

routine, Gillian deposited the used probe in her ‘sharps bin’ to be disposed of professionally, and I left with my

goodie bag and also purchased cleanser and moisturiser as I was determined to start my new skin care routine (which I have been undertaking religiously nearly every day now).

There wasn’t much to see immediately following the treatment other than redness but over the next few days I had little scabs forming in the areas that had been ‘zapped’.

Gillian always makes sure that when I’m booking my appointments with her I don’t have any important engagements in the few days following as you do need to allow your skin to heal properly and for any swelling and redness to subside. Of course following the aftercare instructions is extremely important in ensuring that your skin will heal properly.

To find out more about these or other treatments, or to book an appointment you

can contact Gillian on 07711 067 789 or email [email protected]. Or for more information go to:

Edenbridge ‘Singing For Health’ Scheme 2015

Are you suffering from a chronic health problem? If so, group singing could help to relieve the symptoms, as well as reducing the stress and isolation that are often unwelcome side-effects of long-term illness.

Thanks to a donation from the Great Stonebridge Trust, Eden Songsters are offering a limited number of subsidised places for this weekly drop-in, where you can enjoy singing in a friendly, supportive group. The warm-up exercises and group singing encourage deep breathing and help to control posture and movement, while creating a sense of wellbeing. There is no need to read music, as songs are learnt by ear, keeping the brain active.

Recent studies by the Sidney De Haan Research Centre (Canterbury Christchurch University) have demonstrated the benefits of group singing for patients with a range of medical conditions, including Parkinson’s, dementia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and mental health problems. People suffering from heart disease, stroke and chronic pain have also reported improvements in their symptoms.

The ‘Singing for Health’ scheme welcomes applications from anyone living in the Edenbride area. To take up this offer, simply complete the application form, giving a brief out-line of your health needs, along with a short statement of confirmation by your GP. You can pick up a form at the Edenbridge Medical Practice or the Eden Centre, or by writing to [email protected]. Closing date: 28th January 2015.

Eden Songsters meet on Wednesdays, from 2.00 – 3.30 pm at the Eden Centre, Four Elms Road. Even if you don’t qualify for a health subsidy, you are welcome to come along and see what we get up to in our weekly drop-in; the first ‘taster’ session is free of charge.

Edenbridge Town Village Hall Charity

“The Edenbridge Village Hall (aka W.I. Hall) is on the corner of Station Approach and the High Street. It is home to many local activities due to it’s location and facilities. It has a large kitchen with serving hatch, a stage with lighting (soon to be refurbished) and a small meeting room with kettle, sink and toilet.

The main hall area is suitable for large groups and is currently used by: Nursery School, Dance School, Tai-Chi, Forge Singers & Edenbridge Players (audiences are necessary), Country Music (every occasion is packed out), EdenARA with it’s large membership, Afternoon and Evening WI groups use it (it’s their hall) as well as the Historical Society and Town Band.

It is available for Private Hire if an occasion can be planned well ahead (Sundays are more likely to be available). All reservations are through the Town Council Office on 01732 865 368. Any questions about the hall can be made to Ken Day, Chairman of the Edenbridge Town Village Hall Charity, responsible for running the hall on 01732 860 203.

As Edenbridge is thriving, we hope this information is useful, particularly to newcomers!”

re Southern Oven Services love the jobs you hate

Oven cleaning... It’s not a job I particularly enjoy (I can’t remember the last time I did actually clean my oven) and I’ve never heard anyone I know speak with any fondness of this task...until now. Jeff Skilton of

Southern Oven Services (SOS) takes much delight in his work and when he talks about the art of oven cleaning he does so with a passion.

Jeff spent over 17 years as a milkman so is fully experienced in dealing with his customers direct. When Jeff and his partner Fiona moved to Edenbridge 5 years ago they realised there was room in the local market for an oven cleaning company and launched SOS nine months ago.

Oven cleaning is not about scrubbing the oven with the latest brand of oven cleaning foam which can be quite potent. Jeff spent two months with a professional cleaner, attending jobs with him and really learning the trade inside and out. He was also keen to make sure he used all the latest in environmentally friendly products so there would be no chemical smells in your house after he’s finished his cleaning work. After each clean, Jeff runs a dry steamer over the oven so it doesn’t just sparkle but is germ free too and you can start using your oven straight away.

In order for an oven to be cleaned properly, it is taken apart as much as possible and all the removable elements (glass, racks, trays etc.)

are soaked in a special heated dip tank which is in the back of the van. This process removes grease carbon and burnt on food.

To ensure no mess is made while he’s working in your property, Jeff comes complete with shoe and carpet covers to every job.

So what are the benefits of cleaning your oven regularly? Well, performance can be dramatically improved (depending on how much grime has been allowed to build up), food tastes better coming from a clean oven, and of course it reduces the risk of your oven becoming a fire hazard.

You can see from the pictures exactly what a difference SOS can make to a dirty oven, bringing it up like new. It’s not just the inside that is cleaned but the hobs and oven casing too.

Other appliances that SOS clean are:

Extractors AGAs Fridges Freezers BBQs Dishwashers Washing Machines

SOS have both domestic and commercial customers and can carry out contract work as well as one-off cleans. They are fully trained, equipped, certified and professional with their service delivery.

If you would like to find out more about the services on offer from SOS, call Jeff or Fiona on 01732 300 947, or visit their website at www.southernovenservices.co.uk

re Aspray - Taking the hassle out of property insurance claimsIf you’re a property owner then I think you will be very interested in my new service, so I’m delighted to take this opportunity to tell you a little bit about myself. I am Mark Mitcheson and I’ve lived happily in the Edenbridge area for the last 25 years. I’m a project manager by profession and have worked with a range of companies from multinational to start- up.

I also have a passion in architecture and buildings, so much so that my

dream is to one day take part in Grand Designs. It is this passion which has led me to my current work with Aspray - more of that later - but, talking about buildings…

There’s nothing better than opening your own front door, knowing you can shut it behind you and escape from the hustle and bustle of the outside world. That’s why, when your home is damaged in some way, by extreme weather, fire or criminal activity, it can be painful and unsettling for you on a very personal level.

While your business may not hold as much of your precious family history, property damage and interruption in trading can be just as devastating in its own way.

If the worst happens, that’s distressing enough, but sadly your problems are only just beginning. Not only do you have to cope with the disruption, inconvenience and financial implications, but you have to take on the insurance company, deal with all the paperwork, find tradespeople to carry out the repairs and then supervise them.

That’s what we at Aspray can do for you!

Imagine having someone working tirelessly

on your behalf, making all those wearisome phone calls for you, cutting through the red tape and negotiating with the loss adjuster to ensure your settlement is fair.

But we don’t stop there! We then focus on finding the very best

Aspray-vetted local plumbers, electricians, builders and roofers. Providing you with regular progress reports, we project manage the repairs so that your home or business is returned to its former glory as quickly as possible.

It may be hard to believe but this amazing service comes COMPLETELY FREE to you, since we invoice the insurers directly for all property reinstatement and repairs. (You will, of course, have to pay the policy excess as you would have to in any case when you make a claim.)

Thinking back to the awful floods in December 2013, I’m sure it remains all too real in your memory as we reach the anniversary of those fateful few days. The great thing that came out of that was how people will pull together in difficult times.

That’s why I find my work with Aspray so rewarding. Project management involves a whole range of activities but the best part for me is being able to make a positive difference to those whose lives have been turned upside down by damage to their home or business.

I’d like to finish by saying that if your property is damaged and you’re daunted by the prospect of dealing with the aftermath, then, on behalf of Aspray, I’d be honoured to help make your life that little bit easier. I can be reached on 01293 762350 or visit our website at Aspray.com where you can download a voucher worth £100 towards your excess if you ask me to manage your claim.

re The Barrister Broker - reducing your legal costsMerry Christmas and Happy New Year! There has been some fantastic entertainment in Edenbridge over the last couple of months with Bonfire Night being one, but what a shame about the rain. Still, great to see so many people out supporting the event and like many of you, I got absolutely drenched! Also, all those Doctor Who’s in town for the Christmas event was a great spectacle and the Tardis behind the Eden Valley Museum was most impressive.

We now live in a digital age with the internet an invaluable information

resource tool as expertise and knowledge is widely shared and easily accessible across the web. Whatever subject takes your interest there is a mass of free information available online. Take legal issues as an example. We can now learn from the numerous legal “DIY” websites that are only a few clicks away, enabling us to become empowered to deal with legal issues ourselves rather than engage legal representation. This might explain the increase the courts are seeing in the “litigant in person” - the term used by the courts to describe someone who does not have a solicitor acting for them.

Whilst money can be saved by not using a lawyer, I recently read that senior judges have expressed concern that litigants in person are losing winnable cases because they do not have legal representation. The message here is that should DIY go wrong it can put you in a worse position than which you started, especially if you get hit with the other side’s costs!

The solution is to find the middle ground – a compromise that gives the empowered litigant in person the opportunity to stay in control of their case, reduce their legal spend, yet still have access to legal expertise when needed, which could prove crucial to the outcome of the case.

This is where I help.

For the benefit of new readers, I am not a lawyer and cannot give legal advice. I am a freelance Barristers’ Clerk passionately helping individuals and businesses take control of their legal issues by arranging experienced

Barristers to provide expert legal advice and representation in court. My direct route to Barristers removes any need for a solicitor resulting in huge savings for the client. This is the middle ground.

My clients are litigants in person but don’t represent themselves – instead they use a Barrister to help them with their legal issue, whether that is advising on the law, determining strategy, drafting legal documents, writing letters or representing them in court.

I have had many clients over the past 18 months who, in my view, represent the new breed of litigant in person – empowered; self-directed; efficient; keen to do as much as they can; cost conscious but realistic enough to recognise the benefits of investing in a legal expert’s help; determined not to use solicitors.

People want to avoid overspending on legal matters. Legal costs are an overhead to be monitored, managed and trimmed. In my world, clients use the direct services of Barristers to help them resolve their legal issues as quickly and cost-effectively as possible.

Divorce/financial settlements; contact and residence of children; business disputes - If you are acting for yourself but could do with some expert help, or maybe you already have a solicitor but would like to know if I can save you money, give me a ring on 01732 866 562.

Remember, speaking to me costs nothing but I could end up saving you thousands!
