The Navy recently granted a five- day emergency leave to Fred Over ton because of the death of his paternal grandfather, Fred L. Over ton of Hampton Bays. Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Smith Jr. and sons Michael and Peter of Gann Road, Three Mile Harbor, went Up state Sept. 16. Michael is in his fresh man year at Union College, Schenec tady, N. Y. Michael will study marine biology. Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Peter visited many places of inter est, returning home five days later. Dr. and Mrs. Gerald Sexton of Kings Point Road, Clearwater, at tended the funeral of Mrs. Sexton’s step-father, Mr. George Chase of East Rockaway, on Wednesday of last week. Mrs. Chase is visiting her daughter and family in Clearwater. Logan Hannay of Messena, N. Y. visited Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Tal- mage this past week. Mr. Hanney is Mrs. Talmages’ brother. At Air School > AIRMAN Apprentice Clarence E. King recenily completed basic training at the Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, 111., and is at Aviation Mechanics Funda mental School, Memphis, Tenn. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence King of Springs. Miss Jane Denton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Denton, of Springs - Amagansett Road, started work as a practical nurse at the Southampton Hospital on Monday. Last week Jane's parents, accom panied by Mr. and Mrs. George Payne and daughter Pamela attend ed Jane's graduation from Wyckoff Heights Hospital, Brooklyn. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Notel and chil dren are visiting in South Carolina. They will visit Mr. Notel’s brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Notel. Mrs. Angelo Liberti of Sag Har bor visited her son Angelo, and family this past week. Thora Moss of Accabonac High way, celebrated her ninth birthday with a party given at her home on Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Jim McGuyer of Jamesport visited Mr. and Mrs. John Kappel of Woodbine Drive over the weekend. Previously, Mrs. Kappels’ mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Robert, her sister and brother- in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Preston Robert, and another sister, Miss Odett Robert of New Orleans, La., had also been house guests of the Kappels. Mr. and Mrs! John Bennett and children of Church Lane are back in their home after the summer. Florus Miller celebrated his 80th birthday with a party for friends and relatives at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence King of School Street. Mr. Miller’s granddaughter, Mrs. Douglas Tikkanen and Mr. Tikkanen and children came home for the celebration. Clarence King, III with his fiance, Miss Susan Lackay of Queens Vil lage, recently journeyed to York, Pa., to attend the wedding of a Navy friend. Mrs. Jerome Benoit and daughter Melida, of Meridan, Conn., recently visited Mrs. Benoit’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Pidgeon, of Fireplace Road. Miss Mary Ann Reichart left Sept. 18 to enter Nancy Taylor’s Secre tarial School. There will be a meeting on Oct. 3 at the Springs Chapel on the ad visability of remodeling the Chapel. All interested members have been urged to attend. The Bible study class of the Springs Chapel will be held at 8 p.m. today. Mrs. Roy Hulse will be the teacher. Next Sunday, commu nion service will be conducted by the Rev. Paul V. Cunkle. School News Physical examinations were held last week for the boys in prepara tion for the soccer team. The first game will be played Oct. 2 with Springs at Tuckahoe. Eight cheerleaders were picked from the seventh and eighth grades for the school year. The girls are Holly Reichart, Susan Bates, Darlene DeCristofaro, Joanne Iannone, Joanne Dordelman, Karen Verderosa, Cyri Bennett and Barbara Fanning. The Fire Department reported that its cocktail party Saturday was at tended by more than 350 people. Door prizes were won by Robert Dordelman and Vincent Lyons. George Schellinger Sr. of Ama gansett won the first prize, a gas All Aboard For a Talk grill, and the second prize, a quart of Scotch, went to Mrs. Evelyn Bates. Nature Notes A pair of swans graced Accabonac Creek Saturday afternoon. The creek, a natural refuge, houses many kinds of wildlife, including heron, cranes, ducks, and sealife. Now that the open-bay ducking season has been cpen since Monday, local hunters will be on the look out for coot and old squaw. The scallop season is open but they are reportedly not too plentiful. Scout News Girl Scout leaders and assistants met Monday at Mrs. Charlotte Mar kowitz’ house in East Hampton to establish Troops. A large increase in the number of girls was report ed, and Cadette leaders are needed. Women interested have been ask ed to contact Mrs. William W. Bate? Uniforms are also needed. A l' mothers have been asked to attend the first meeting of their daughters' Troops. There will be two Brownie Troops. One will be led by Mrs. Elsie Jewett, assisted by Mrs. Sally Bennett and Mrs. Sandra Bennett. It will meet at the Springs Chapel Tuesdays from 3 to 4:30 p.m. The other Troop, led by Mrs. Eva Verderosa, assisted by Mrs. Ruth Campbell, will meet at the Chapel Monday at the same hours. The Junior leaders will be Mrs. Marge DeCastro, Mrs. Regina Nichols, and Mrs. Sara Briand, and the Troop will meet Wednesdays from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the Chapel. There may be 43 girls in this Troop alone. There will be a committee meet ing Monday at 8 p.m. at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Wood to dis cuss the October Cub Scout Pack meeting. Vance Teel has earned his Cub Wolf badge as has Ed Tilling- hast, James Loper has earned the Silver Arrow, Ronnie Bennett a Golden Arrow, and Jim Wagenhauser a Silver Arrow. Mrs. Joan Loper has reported four new members for Den II. Mrs. Beatrice Bennett spent a week in Greenport, visiting friends and relatives. Miss Barbara Ann Bennett has returned home after visiting Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Neill in Port Washing ton. Springs residents attending Suf folk County Community College this semester include Mrs. Thomas Col lins, Mrs. Estelle Hulse, Mrs. Effie Miller, Mrs. Daniel Bospey, Robert Davies and Richard Steele. Mr. and Mrs. Russell Warrington of Delaware and Mr. and Mrs. Lee Weihberg of Sayville recently visit ed Mr. and Mrs. Donald Wood. The three men served together in the Navy on the USS Los Angeles 23 years ago. Kenneth E. Miller, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth V. Miller, who is serving with the Seabees in Vietnam, has received the Na tional Defense Medal and the Viet nam Service Medal. Susan Talmage, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert B. Talmage, 877 Fireplace Road, is a freshman at State University Agricultural and Technical College, Cobleskill, in the food service division. He expects to announce a moving date some time before the end of October. Mr. and Mrs. Charles J. Urstadt of Bronxville spent the weekend at their house on Marine Boulevard, Amagansett East. Guests for the weekend were Mr. and Mrs. Albert R. Hughes of Bronxville. Dirk Kuzmier of Whalers Lane and Irvington, N. Y., was at his summer house for the weekend. A new instrumental music teach er, assigned to the Amagansett School this week by the Board of Coopera tive Educational Services, began work to start the School’s band pro gram on Monday. He is James Ral ston and will be at the School every Monday and Thursday. At the Amagansett Free Library, Carleton Kelsey, librarian, reported this week, the recent acquisition of a microfilm reader. The cost of the reader was shared by the Library and the Suffolk Cooperative Library System, which granted $50 toward the purchase. Mr. Kelsey explained that, as a member of the System, the Library has access to all the System’s micro film materials as well as to books. He said first use of the reader was being made by a high school student doing research with the New York Times Index. Charles W. Rush is convalescing from surgery at his home on Town Lane. He returned home last Thurs- Huntington Station were weekend day from Southampton Hospital. guests of Mr. and Mrs. Francis Lester. Mrs. Mark Ryan Sr. was hostess to the Wednesday Afternoon Bridge Club yesterday. Private Edward Gallagher, USMC, has been visiting at home this week prior to his reassignment to Cherry Point, N. C. Seaman Morley H. Schellinger, USN, left Monday after a 30-day leave at home with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Morley L. Schellinger of Abraham’s Path. Seaman Schellinger flew to San Francisco, Cal., and then to Atsugi, Japan, where he will be stationed. He is being trained to become a jet engine mechanic. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Hansen of Dr. Guy Longobardo of Hampton Lane and Bronxville has returned from a tour of the Cariovascular Institute at Michael Reese Hospital, Chicago, 111. H e le c t u r e d there on Sept. 18 on human respiratory con trol systems. He is a former professor of mechanical and bio-engineering at Columbia University, now with the advanced systems development divi sion of IBM. Mr. and Mrs. William Fisher are the parents of a son, born Sept. 16 at the Southampton Hospital. Robert Gwathmey’s house and studio on Bluff Road are featured in an article, ‘‘Homes For All Sea sons,” in the October issue of Holi day magazine. A color photo of the house spreads over a page and a half. The house was designed by Charles Gwathmey, Mr. Gwathmey’s son. Mrs. James H. Reutershan of Stony Hill Road will represent the East Hampton Branch of the American Association of University Women at meetings of the Suffolk County charter revision committee, begin ning today at Suffolk Community College.
