2We are in a season of critical change for the church; a shift and transition is needed to see signifi cant transformation come to the communities, cities and nations of Europe.

Transformation is non-negotiable. 2 Cor 3:18 writes being transformed from the same image, from glory to glory. We should expect and experience transformation, infl uencing and impacting every pocket of society. We believe the church needs to move beyond entertaining consumers into engaging Christs mission in the world. We should ask how much of Jesus can we get into our cities rather than how many people can we gather on a Sunday morning.

Transformation is very much at the heart of Gods mission for our cities, our nations and for the continent of Europe. If we are to see transformation come to Europe we believe it is going to be critical to see the strategic alignment of relationships and partnerships coming together for a common vision and common purpose.

Catalytic partnerships are about the power that comes from a people of faith sharing and working for a common vision. Jesus basically said the same thing when he called his disciples and mobilised the 12 and the 70 to work together. Jesus saw the need of humanity, the need of the world. He saw the need of the city and the nations and he said, The harvest is plentiful but the labourers are few. He didnt say the resources are few; he said the labourers are few. Many times we make the excuse that we dont have the resources but here Jesus said the labourers are few. So we dont have a resource problem, we have a labourer problem. God is bringing about partnerships and when the collective Body of Christ comes together for a common vision and purpose and when strategic partnerships align together, then we will get the work done and we will have the ample resources to do it.

The NLI family is totally blessed by the current and former partnerships we have enjoyed over the last twenty years. In October 2011, we brought partners together and celebrated our 20th year of mission together in Europe. What we have accomplished so far in Europe we have done together in partnership. But we are not satisfi ed. Going forward we want to partner deeper adding hundreds and thousands more relationships because Europe desperately needs us together. The harvest is so plentiful and NLI cant do it alone.

3As NLI moves forward into this transformational agenda, we are sensing that we need to form strong catalytic partnerships with friends who share the same heart and vision for Europe. We are beginning to see that happen and are exploring possibilities inviting others to join us on this journey.

Missiologists tell us that Europe has become the most forgotten mission fi eld on the planet but we believe God has his hand on Europe; he wants to see cities, communities and nations transformed.

The question we ask is where is your heart? Where do you see yourself fi t, how would you see yourself partner with us? Could you come alongside emerging leaders? Do you carry a gifting for the marketplace, for developing social enterprise or missional business? Or perhaps you have a burden for tackling social injustice and poverty.

As you read on through the rest of this newsletter we simply ask that you take a moment to consider where you could fi t and envision yourself doing something for the continent of Europe. Ask yourself this question: Where is your heart? We would love to hear the answer and have an opportunity to partner with you to see the nations of Europe transformed.

Our passions lie particularly in Eastern Europe and stems from my childhood when I was stirred after hearing stories about the faith of Christians that were persecuted under communism. Our passion grew after the experience of leading mission teams into Russia right after the fall of communism and seeing the incredible hunger for God. Twenty years on, we are still passionate about seeing communities transformed through the power and presence of God.

8Coventry in October provided a wonderful setting for Eurosummit 2011. With guests gathered from all around the globe, the scope of interest in and commitment to mission in Europe was awe-inspiring. The collective energy, passion and resource available for our mission fi eld holds greater potential than we can imagine.

The agenda for this Eurosummit was transformationthe radical change that can occur when Gods powerful goodness pervades a society through His Church. The guest speakers informed and challenged the delegates with new vision, diff erent means and fresh expectations for their roles in Christs mission in Europe. This prompted some deep discussion as people grappled with the content and its implications for them.

From those group discussions there was a consensus that the church is in a state of transition, no longer focusing primarily on the weekly gathering of the saints. For the infl uence of God to be felt in society, the church must equip individuals to exert infl uence in their daily interactions. New value must be placed by leaders on peoples work as worship and mission without that value, individuals miss a key opportunity to serve the mission of Christ.

9The church must be engaged in their society at multiple levels to tangibly address the economic disparity in their communities. Poverty and its causes need to be a focus for leaders so that the Kingdoms presence is felt. It is not enough to serve the need but to address the cause of the needs as well.

A key insight from the delegates, related to the unique contexts of the Christian communities in the nations of Europe was that, whilst all agreed that transformation is necessary, most saw that there is no uniform approach or strategy to see it become reality. All acknowledged the need for specifi c wisdom and insight as to how to bring about transformation. They appealed to NLI to communicate and connect them with those who have proven eff ective in this and to their research.

The conversations of Eurosummit resounded with the conviction that Gods heart is for more than just the salvation of souls, but about the redemption and enhancement of life itself, for all people.

Each community has its own, unique story and strengths and yet every community has one thing in common; unmet needs. What gap is your community currently facing? Is it a defi cit in your school systems budget? A park that needs to be revitalized? A non-profi t organization that could use some

support? A lack of funding for a youth program? Teenage pregnant young mothers needing

support? Social care under pressure? Spiritually deprived need a hope for a future?

There are all kinds of needs. Poverty comes in diff erent colours and sizes. Material poverty is easy to recognize but what about relational poverty, spiritual poverty or even motivational poverty?

There are gaping, unmet holes in each community that is crying out, not for a fi x, but a long term, sustainable solution. The brilliant book, When Helping Hurts by Corbett and Fikkert explains that in order to implement transformation 3 stages of development must be met; relief (meeting the immediate need), rehabilitation (establishing a clear path forward) and development (a sustainable future).

In order for transformation to happen and go beyond missional activities the following paradigm shifts should and must be actively pursued:

From building walls to building bridges. You are the salt of the earthYou are the light of the world (Matthew 5:13,14). Firstly, we as the church must see ourselves in relation to our communities. Will we remain outside of the community inviting people in or will we go into our communities seeking to be an agent of transformation? The church is called to be separate in lifestyle but never called to be isolated from the people it seeks to infl uence.

From measuring attendance to measuring impact. The kingdom of heaven is like yeast...mixed into a large amount of fl our until it worked all through the dough (Matthew 13:33). In a post-modern world most people are neither impressed with the size of a church nor its commitment to truth. Yet, from TIME magazine to the front page of the Wall Street Journal, transformational community-centered ministries are grabbing the attention of ordinary people.

From encouraging the Christians to attend a service to equipping the believer for works of service. It is (God) who gave some to bepastors and teachers, to prepare Gods people for works of service (Ephesians 4:11,12) In the typical church, lay people are asked to serve in fi ve or six capacities: Teach Sunday School class Work in the nursery Lead a home Bible study or small group Sing in the choir Be an usher or greeter Serve on a board or committee

Tim Keller of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City writes that the process of mobilizing members into ministers starts by articulating clearly and regularly a theology of every-member ministry it must be communicated that every layperson is a

minister and that ministry is fi nding needs and meeting them in the goal of the spread of the kingship of Christ.

From serve us to serve from inward to outward focus. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give (Mark 10:45). Several years ago Chuck Colson made the observation that when the Communists took over Russian in 1917, they did not make Christianity illegal. Their constitution guaranteed freedom of religion but forced the church to refrain from doing good works. No longer could the church fulfi ll its historic role in feeding the hungry, welcoming the stranger, housing the orphan, educating children or caring for the sick. 70 years later, the church was totally irrelevant to the communities in which it dwelt. Has our own religiosity produced the same results?

From duplication of human services and ministries to partnering with existing services and agencies. Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work (Ecclesiastes 4:9). Nearly every community has a number of human service agencies such as the local food bank, homeless shelter, emergency family housing and safe houses for abused women. Rather than starting a new ministry, why not form partnerships with existing groups? Chances are that people from your congregation are already serving in many of these organizations. Why not use the current connections to create synergy?

From condemning the city to blessing the city and praying for it. Jeremiah 29: Seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper (v. 7) You cannot change a city that you do not love. For too long the church has positioned itself as an adversary to its own community.

Now is the time to embrace Transformation of Communities for those who most need the good news will eventually, get it!!

Next Level International have been recruiting and releasing teams of short-term missionaries into Europe for over 20 years. Thousands of people of all ages have taken part in hundreds of mission trips aimed at working alongside churches and supporting church planters in their evangelistic outreach.

As we look to the future, NLI are sensing that its time for Europe to experience a diff erent kind of missionary team; one that looks to bring transformation to the communities they visit.

God is already at work through many individuals and organisations in the communities and cities of Europe. Jeremiah 29:7 say seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you .... Our desire is to see hundreds of transformational teams on the ground in Europe, made up of people of all ages who want to engage and build on the work already taking place with the aim of seeing individuals, families, communities and cities transformed through a holistic approach.

Transformational teams fi rst of all seek the PEACE of the city, that is help the city experience the peace of God; the Shalom of God. The Bible says we are to let our light shine before men so that people see our good works and GLORIFY OUR FATHER IN HEAVEN. We do whatever it takes to help the city in a restorative wholeness. Secondly, a transformational team will seek the PROSPERITY of the city, ie through practical expression help to restore beauty and peace to the city in order to see it prosper.

For you the traveller, engaging in a transformation trip facilities a hands on learning environment, helping you to see and meet individual and community needs, develop a servant leadership mindset, serve as a catalyst to those living in the community, whilst at the same time igniting a passion for your own city back home, helping you to understand the full picture of what the Gospel of Jesus is.

Every day of a transformational trip is:

purposeful ; not just because youre kept busy, but because youre actually making a real diff erence in the city that you visit.

Powerful; the elements of each day challenge you as the traveller as you sense and encounter the presence of God on a day to day basis.

Real; you are not there to entertain or be entertained but to establish ministry and Kingdom infl uence that will continue and last long after you have left home.

In Moldova we are seeking the help of a ministry to the homeless from Oregon to convert our current STM approach into Transformational Teams. The goal is to transform more than just a moment, a day, a week, a month, or a year... transformation should be for a lifetime. In Serbia we are investigating the establishment of a caf, run by a church partner as both a community outreach but more importantly, as a means to create funding for crisis pregnancy centres. In Romania, Albania, and Bulgaria, we are introducing transformational thinking into the church planter training and leadership development conferences. So, transformation is more than just a buzzword, it is now part of our DNA. It doesnt make our jobs any easier, but it does make them more relevant. It doesnt replace all weve done, it builds off of it. It opens new doors, creates new challenges, and offers so many new opportunities for you to be involved. A seed of Transformation For the past two years, NLI has been helping to plant many new churches in the Crimea region of Ukraine. Simferopol, with a population 450,000, is one of cities we are working in. Vova and Irina Bilik are planting a unique church in a Chiropractic Salon owned by a Christian business man and operated by church members. God has opened a door for the church to minister in a local orphanage, where house parents and children have come to Christ. Gods presence now inhabits this orphanage. Vovas is currently pursuing a building in the city in order to establish a Life Center, where young people can be discipled, mentored and trained in various life skills and vocations to help them enter the marketplace equipped to carry Gods presence. Vova is serious about seeing the Transforming power of the gospel transform lives and the city in which they live.What Next?

During 2012 the Region 6 team will explore various expressions of Transformation in the nation of Ukraine. Having already carried out exploratory trips to several cities and communities, two or three have been identifi ed for further research and development. In the town of Smolina, for example we witnessed an openness to the gospel not seen since the early days after the fall of communism. We will be exploring an opportunity
