The book is an account of the work based on the concept of Ukhtomskii, that the dominant focus is a temporarily dominant reflex system controlling the activity of neural centres at a given moment, the influence of particular cortical foci on particular efferent systems under these circumstances is variable in time and the “centre” loses its role as an apparatus with a special functional significance. The way in which the dominant focus occurs and alters in the cortex and during conditioning is discussed.

THIS is the result of the International Conference on Prostaglandins held in Vienna in September 1972. The majority of active workers on prostaglandins were present at this conference and the resulting symposium gives a very good account of the present state of the subject. The chapter headings are: 1. Biosynthesis. 2. Metabolism. 3. Analytical methods. 4. Discussion on analytical methods. 5. Biological activity and structure. 6. Metabolic effects. 7. Prostaglandins and adenyl cyclase system. 8. Metabolic effects. 9. Respiratory system. 10. Gastrointestinal system. 11. Renal system. 12. Circulatory system. 13. In- flammation. 14.
