THE CRIER February 2019 Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Dear Friends in Christ, Last week the beloved poet Mary Oliver died. If you’re not familiar with her poetry, I invite you to track some down and take a look. One of her best-known lines comes from a poem entitled The Summer Day. The poem ends with the line, “Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your wild and precious life?” With her exquisite gift of artfully using language, Oliver invites us to consider the possibilities that lie ahead for us, as well as to reflect on the fact that each of us only gets one life - one chance - one wild and precious chance - to live. It is slightly reminiscent of Jesus’ challenge to us to live life in all its abundance. As we make our way through life, there are plenty of opportunities for us to reflect on the nature and meaning of life in general and of our life in particular. Too many times, we let the busy-ness of living keep us from such reflection. It was Socrates who said, “The unexamined life is not worth living” and I daresay this is especially true for people of faith. Who are we? Why are we here? What does God want each of us to do with our one wild and precious life? These are questions with which people of faith have wrestled for centuries. It’s true that we can’t always do what we want with our lives. Obligations, infirmity and time are just a few of the things that can keep us from living what we might feel is an abundant life. As with so many things, Jesus took this idea and turned it upside down. Jesus teaches us, by word and example, that the abundant life - the fulfilled life - the life that is valued as precious beyond words - is the life that is lived in the service of others. Jesus also said, “Anyone who would save their life must lose it,” and, counter-intuitive as that might seem, it is the truth. When we are engaged in any activity about which we are passionate, we talk about “losing ourselves” in it. How much more is this the case when we are engaged in active service to God through serving others? No matter our situation, there is always SOMETHING we can do to be of service. Acts both large and small can be done for the glory of God and when coupled with prayer and a deep love of God and neighbor, amazing things can be accomplished through them. We are still in the season of Epiphany, celebrating the visit of the Wise Men, or Magi, who came to the newborn savior bearing gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. The light of a star showed them where the child lay. In the season of Epiphany, we focus on reaching out beyond the church to “show” or “reveal” the love of God through Christ to the world. It is a time to see and celebrate where God is at work in the world, and then share the news with others. In a poem entitled Sometimes, Mary Oliver gives us “Instructions for living a life. Pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it.” What if we brought that prescription to the life of faith? How might we and our community and our world be transformed? What if we paid attention to God’s handiwork and love surrounding us? What if we opened ourselves to astonishment and awe at these wonders? And when we are utterly engaged like this, our delight will be to go out and tell others about what God has shown us! May we, like the magi of old, be guided by the light of God to share the light of God’s love with the world, through word and deed. It will be the best possible use of our wild and precious lives. Yours in Christ,

Dear Friends in Christ,

Last week the beloved poet Mary Oliver died. If you’re not familiar with her poetry, I invite you to track some down and take a look. One of her best-known lines comes from a poem entitled The Summer Day. The poem ends with the line,

“Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your wild and precious life?” With her exquisite gift of artfully using language, Oliver invites us to consider the possibilities that lie ahead for us, as well as to reflect on the fact that each of us only gets one life - one chance - one wild and precious chance - to live. Choral Scholars Dinner

Rescheduled for March 2, 2018

The theme for this year’s dinner will be “Broadway Meets the Old West.” Dig out those boots and westerns hats and join us for another night of good food and song. Expect fun sing-along and great Broadway tunes sung by our Choral Scholars. Who knows? You might get a chance to dosey-doe with your partner if we can find a caller!

The dinner is one of our two fundraisers to support our Choral Scholars who help provide us with wonderful music on Sunday mornings. Join us on Saturday, March 2nd at 6 p.m. Please RSVP to the church

office.

_____________________________________________________________

The Deacons would like to give a BIG THANKS to those who contributed to this year’s Mitten Tree and would like to encourage continued donations of hats, gloves, scarves, and socks to the Deacons Shop. These items are always in need especially during the coldest months of the year!___________________________________________

ALL ARE WELCOME HERE - including those who need accommodations for hearing or vision impairments. We have special earphones to assist in hearing and they work well! Just ask the sound technicians in the rear of the Sanctuary and they’ll get you all set up.

In the Narthex (behind the sanctuary) we have several large print hymnals with the lyrics of the hymns. They work wonderfully - just ask an usher for one. We also provide at least four large print bulletins each week to use during the worship service, if you are in need of one please let the usher know.

Did you know…..Pastor Mary Jane posts a daily Bible verse with a short reflection? Let her know if you would like to be put on the email list to receive it. Please email her at [email protected].

Are you receiving the weekly email announcements during the week? If not please send an email to the church office at [email protected]. We’ve have a lot of emails bounce back to the church office as undeliverable and it’s quite possible we don’t have the correct email on file. The majority of our updates are sent out via email and the church’s Face Book page, so be sure to “like” us on Face Book too!

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION - February 2019

Parent Meeting - Thank you to everyone who was able to make it to the parent meeting! It is always a nice time catching up with each other and looking forward for the year. We discussed items pertaining to the upcoming camp fundraisers, camp deadlines and Triennium. An email with dates and meeting information will be sent out and posted on the FPCBG Youth & Family Face Book Group pages. If you have questions, be sure to contact Adriane.

THE “SOUPER BOWL” OF CARING - A generation ago, a Presbyterian youth group in California noticed how much money adults were spending on Super Bowl parties. They felt that there should also be an opportunity to provide food for local hunger needs on that national “party day.” They stood at the church exits with soup kettles and asked people to contribute as they left on Super Bowl Sunday. Thus, the “Souper Bowl” of Caring was born – a national youth initiative; non-denominational, always on Super Bowl Sunday, with all donations going to relieve local hunger. Last year’s total – Souper Bowl of 2018 raised 8,194,280 dollars and food items. Our youth participate annually, and they will be deciding which local food project this year’s funds will support. We’ll also welcome contributions up through

February 17 for those who can’t be present on the 3th.

Chili Cook-off and Camp Sunday February 24th - Plan to be at the church for this very special Sunday! Start off by bringing your favorite Chili recipe to show off and share, head to the sanctuary to hear about Camp Rejoice and Triennium during the worship and then come to the Fellowship Hall to taste the various chili entries and vote for your favorite with a donation to our campers! This is the 5th annual Chili Cook-off and it’s always a great time! Last year we were able to raise over $900 to help send our campers to Camp Rejoice! If you’re interested in helping plan this event or bringing an entry for the contest, please let Miss Adriane know!

We Meet - If you come to church on Wednesdays, you'll notice good smells drifting from the kitchen. Join us on Wednesday nights for dinner at 6:00, prepared by various members of our church family. The kids get in on the action too, by not only helping prepare and clean up dinner but by making cards for members of the church family that can't make it all the time. The kids look forward to making cards and sending them and the adults enjoy receiving them and sometimes responding with a special note. There's always a need for more cards, so plan to join us!

Worship CDs - An excellent way to continue helping your child be immersed in God's word and will is to listen to our worship service throughout the week. You can request a CD from Miss Adriane or from the church office to listen to at home or in the car. Please see Miss Adriane if you have any questions.

Treasure Box - The Treasure Box continues to be part of our Sunday worship service. Each Sunday, children are encouraged to give their treasure and fill out the orange envelopes about their offerings of time and talent for the week. We now have special envelopes that combine our time, talent and treasure. Miss Adriane has these available on Sunday mornings and you are welcome to keep some at home.

Triennium! - Get Ready for the 2019 Presbyterian Youth Triennium- a gathering held every three years for high school age students in the Presbyterian Church (USA) and the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Youth from all churches across the sponsoring denominations come together for this life changing, life giving, faith growling gathering! Five days that help form a younger generation of active Presbyterians. Five days that shape the leadership gifts and deepen the discipleship awareness for a generation who ware already achieving a strong presence in this church and the world. GOOD NEWS

Changing lives here at

First Presbyterian Church - February 2019

The Deacons Shop - our ministry of recycling used clothing to the people of Bowling Green. We sort & fold clothes on Wednesday mornings-come join us. Individuals with special circumstances may call the church office for help.

Arrangements will be made to serve them. Again, the community has been generous in supplying winter clothing, including the basics of socks, hats, and gloves. These items are in great demand when the weather turns cold. We continue to offer diapers to those who request them. We maintain a small supply of bedding and towels. We recycle bags when we can. We have a devoted group of volunteers, but are looking for one or two additional people to join us. Want to volunteer? Contact

Janet DeLong at 419/353-1333.

The Wood County Alternative School , which services students who have not been successful in traditional school

settings is housed in our church at minimal cost. Students and staff have returned from holiday break and also enjoyed a long MLK weekend in January. Amid weather delays and cancellations, we have started our second semester. In February ten ALC students and the staff will continue to help the Deacon Shop catch up with the abundance of donations. The students get excited to see their progress and also feel pride when the shop is open on Thursdays knowing the items they assisted with are going to individuals and families. Enjoying the weather students have also assisted in shoveling and salting....fun for youth with lots of energy! Please stop down and visit or pass by and

wave.... we love to see all of you and it is great for the students and staff to have the partnerships!

Our “Backpack Project” is a church mission through which we buy and pack food supplies for the students of the Alternative School, some of whom come from food-insecure homes. Once a month we pack bags of nutritious, easy-to-prepare food and distribute them to students in the Alternative School. If you would like to learn more about the project, how to donate, or if you would like to volunteer to help, please contact Libby Allen-Dachik: [email protected] or 419-494-4117 or Nettie Rose, [email protected]. The Backpack Project has been a very successful, effective outreach program.

We thank you for your generous donations.

We provide space at no charge for La Conexión de Wood County, a self-help and advocacy association for Latinos. They offer English as a Second Language classes here at our church twice a week, as well as holding monthly general meetings here. English as a Second Language and citizenship for adults, free and open to any Limited English proficiency individuals in the community. Children and Youth homework and academic assistance. Classes start next Tuesday Jan 29 for the Spring semester, and will run as

usual Tue and Th 6-7:30 PM.

SPECIAL OFFERINGS: Every month we send $1060 from our budget (funded by your pledges/gifts) to the mission program of the Presbyterian Church (USA) to change lives for people in need all over the world. In

December we received the Christmas JOY offering. The amount received was $1283.78.

YOUR GENEROUS SUPPORT OF THE CHRISTIAN FOOD PANTRY IS APPRECIATED. Many thanks for your continued support of the BG Christian Food Pantry by giving food items in the grocery cart by the elevator. Every week or so we are filling up the cart and then delivering the donated items to the local Christian Food Pantry. I am continually thanked by the staff members who work at the Pantry and asked to extend thanks to all in our church who have assisted on a regular basis. I can confirm that the items we provide are also appreciated by the families and individuals we serve, and very helpful in providing basic needs for those who need assistance. Thanks for your help and

generosity. Dave Hyslop—on behalf of the Deacons

The church also has one Alcohol Anonymous group that meets here in our Fellowship Hall on Tuesday evenings from 7-9. We also have an Narcotics Anonymous group that meets on Wednesday evening in the Green Lounge from 7-9 and an Heroin Anonymous group that meets on Sunday evenings from 7-9.

welcome her personally. Any communications about areas that need special attention should go through Trustees Gary DeLong or Chet Marcin, or through the co-pastors.

We’ve received mail………

Dear Friends:

Comfort, O comfort my people says your God. ((Isaiah 40:1)

“Comfort my People” is a divine command people of faith are eager to

obey. How many times we yearn to fulfill that command when we see

pictures of hurricane destruction in Florida or the Philippines; video of

catastrophic fires overtaiking communities in California; a community

gathered in candlelight vigil following another mass shooting, or a small refugee child

looking through the fence of a detention camp at the freedom she yearns for but cannot reach!

We cannot touch them all . . . But we can pray, and we can give, and when we do, we

become a visible witness of the loving heart of God.

Your generous gift of $500 for DR000148 Disaster Relief-General Relief&PDA

Support on 12/11/18 is a gift that makes divine comfort real, helping those afflicted by

disaster touch the tangible presence of Love.

With gratitude and peace,

The Rev. Dr. Laurie A. Kraus

Director, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance

A 2019 Lenten Invitation to Pray with Art

This year’s stunning devotional invites us on a spiritual and

visual pilgrimage through the holy season of Lent . . . Through the

final days of our Lords ministry . . . his passion . . . His death on the

cross . . . And finally his glorious resurrection at Easter.

So, through magnificent photography and a spiritual discipline

called visio divina - praying with art - we open our eyes with new

awareness and gratitude for the beauty of creation. The text,

meditations and original phtography are all the loving work of the

Rev. Krin Van Tatenhove, long-time Presbyterian pastor, hospice

chaplain, substance abust counselor, traveler, photographer, and

amazing storyteller.

The 2019 Lenten Devotional is perfect of families and individuals. To order your

devotional booklet call toll-free 800-533-4371 and ask for item 17116-18-008 or order online
