During the Centennial Celebration
Reunion on June 30th, ten candles
were lit representing the ten decades
of Congregation Agudath Achim.
Here is how Marc Antine, our emcee
for the evening, introduced each one:
1. In honor of Moses Goldstein, who
in 1883 became the first
permanent Jewish resident of
Taunton – his great-grandnephew
Lance Goldstein.
2. In honor of Jacob Bernstein, who
in 1905 opened the first Jewish
bakery in Taunton and convened
Taunton’s earliest minyans – his
great-granddaughter Roz Helfand.
3. In honor of Louis Antine, who in
1911 became a founder and
officer of the synagogue – his
great-grandson Peter Antine.
4. In honor of Max Assiran, who in
1913 was one of dozens present
at the laying of the synagogue’s
cornerstone – his granddaughter
Judith Ellis.
5. In honor of Matilda
Zwetchkenbaum, who in 1937
became the first president of
Sisterhood – her daughter
Barbara Zwetchkenbaum
Poplack.
6. In honor of Ada Arkanase, who in
1988 became the first female
president of the synagogue – her
son Russell Arkanase.
7. In honor of our 100 year history of
family membership and
participation, on behalf of himself
and Dr. Menahem Cooperstein,
two of our longest-standing
members – Dr. Israel Helfand.
8. In honor of his 50 years of service
as our golden voiced cantor –
Stanley Lipp.
9. In honor of her numerous and, we
hope, infinitely continuing years of
service as our spiritual leader –
Rabbi Anne Heath.
10. In honor of the present and future
vibrancy of our congregation – our
current chair of the Board of
Directors, Mija Almeida.

All of these many aspects of being Jewish are “on the table”. Ronni Zusman, Rabbi Heath and the Adult Education com-mittee are ready to get to work. They need your input. So—what’s your pleas-ure? Contact Ronni Zusman at [email protected] or 508-824-0571 to help create what you’re willing to sup-port.
