CHAPTERS AND STATESChapters Celebrate a Season of Giving

A number of HLAA Chapters happily reported many of their members celebrated the 35th Anniversary of our organization by giving the gift of an HLAA membership to someone who needed support. The Sun Lakes (AZ) Chapter gave an HLAA Professional Membership to the Robeson Library. It was not only a nice way to thank the library for adding a loop system to their main meeting room where the chapter meets, but also a smart way to get Hearing Loss Magazine added to the library’s shelves. This is a great idea any time of the year for a chapter looking to build or strengthen alliances with another organization in the community.

Boston Chapter Creates a Seasonal Tool Kit For many of us, the large gatherings of the

holidays can be a challenge. The Boston Chapter gave each one of their members a “Surviving and Thriving Holiday Tool Kit” at their December party. For details go to: http://www.hearinglossboston.org.

Orlando Chapter Joins the National Basketball Association

The Orlando Magic NBA team invited the Orlando Chapter to host a Hearing Loss Awareness Night for their January 3, 2015 game with the Charlotte Hornets. The chapter had an information booth for the 20,000 fans on hand.

What You Giveth, You Shall Receiveth The Sarasota (FL) Chapter spiced up their

holiday meeting with a barbershop quartet. Flo Innes, president emeritus, and a longtime advocate of ALDs across Florida was serenaded with “Ain’t She Sweet” to a standing ovation.

TRAFFIC STOP

One day a certain lady was driving on the Highway. She frequently checked her speed gauge to make sure she stayed within the speed limit. However, when she looked into her rear mirror, much to her dismay, she saw a police car not far behind! And, to make matters worse, the police car turned on his flashing lights.

She thought to herself, "Uh-oh, what have I done now? I'm not speeding. I'm not drinking. I have my seat belt on! I have kept up my license dues and everything!" So, she pulled over and the police car pulled over to the side right behind her car. She drove her car slowly to a stop, slowly rolled down the window, and prepared for a ticket when she knew she didn't deserve it.

A policeman walked up to her window, and spoke to her. The lady pointed to her ear and shook her head, meaning she was deaf. The policeman smiled slightly and wrote, "I know. I'm here to tell you that your horn is stuck."

Andrea obtained funding through a grant from the Broward Public Library Foundation for an Induction Loop System which was installed for the Broward County Northwest Regional L ib ra ry ' s Confe rence Room in November 2013. She arranged more than twenty programs during that time, andsaw attendance boosted from 4-5 in the beginning to as many as 30.

planned for January meeting .Christina Graw, Marketing Coordinator for the

Independent Living Resource Center (ILRC), is the guest speaker for January

The ILRC is a nonprofit organization empowering independence for people with disabilities in Northeast Florida. One of the many ways they help is by administering the Florida Telecommunications Inc. program in this area, which offers free amplified telephones to the hearing impaired.

In addition to discussing the ILRC and the services they provide, Ms. Graw will be demonstrating the various telephones that are available to qualified candidates, and providing those phones on site.

In addition, interested parties who wish to have their hearing tested by audiology students, may do so.. Under the guidance of Catherine Swanson, CCC-SLP, CCC-A , the students will be testing members as part of their education. If you’ve been wondering why your say, “What?” or “Huh?” so often, now is the time to find out. For more information, contact President Tom Logue [email protected] . He introduced Dr. Adoga and Dr. Nimkur, two surgeons from Jos, Nigeria. The aim for HHA is to teach African surgeons about cochlear implants by providing equipment, expertise and training. In turn Africans have welcomed these teaching surgeons enthusiastically. It was heartening to hear how people have been helped.. Doctors Green, Adoga and Nimkur were joined by Dr. Drew Horlbeck, a pediatric ENT from Nemours, where the chapter meets.
