The Christmas Revels: A Solstice Celebration of Light

    December 18, 2020 – January 6, 2021

    Portland, Oregon

Welcome to the 2020 production of The Christmas Revels! A NOTE FROM BRUCE HOSTETLER, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Wow . . . 2020 has been quite a year. For Portland Revels and everyone else. Early in the year we still assumed a full stage show in December, as we’ve done for the past 25 years. But as the year progressed, that possibility became more and more remote. Once the COVID19 measures were fully in place we were talking about how we might create a Christmas Revels experience without being able to gather in a theatre together. Revels has a more difficult leap into the virtual world than most other performance companies. Our art is focused on creating community within the theatre. A community that includes the performers onstage and the audience in the seats. Our goal is to connect to something deep within us all that transcends our outward differences. Something universally human, and contained in us all: the singer onstage, you and your close community, and the people sitting all around you. Because of our focus on a community of the moment, it is more difficult to envision a Revels performance in a virtual space. As the other option was to do nothing, we knew even half a loaf would be preferable to going hungry. So, early in March, we set out to bring as much of Christmas Revels magic to the virtual stage as possible. We wrote a script, hired actors (some brand new and some familiar), picked our music, and brought in instrumentalists, just as we do every year. Then we teamed up with Joma Films in Ashland, Oregon to bolster our video expertise. Gary Lundgren from Joma co-created the script with the Revels artistic team, then shot and edited the Christmas Revels you will experience tonight. We hope you will join together with your COVID19 pod to watch this performance, and that you make it an event: sing along, dance if you are able, and enjoy the stories we are bringing to your community. As we celebrate together in our own spaces, we hope to have retained much of the Revels magic you enjoy every year. This format will never replace gathering together in a theatre to sing, dance, and experience the joy that is the Revels. However, the reality of 2020 is that we create an experience we can all enjoy safely. Welcome Yule!

    1. OVERTURE Portland Brass Quintet An arrangement of a lively chanson entitled “Il Est Bel et Bon,” published in 1534 by Pierre Passereau. Down Through the Winters CD, 2010 2. A DIFFERENT DARKNESS Kisha Jarrett, The Storyteller A sonnet written by Richard Lewis for this year’s special Christmas Revels.

To drive the dark away by song and dance, knowing that year always follows year, renews itself in Nature’s wise sequence though light and life may seem to disappear; to make hope come alive through revelry. That is our work, what folk have always done against the dark, an ancient certainty that’s still as true as every morning sun. Now a different kind of darkness comes, a different kind of dragon, hard to slay. But we have instruments of joy and drums and choral song, laughter and poetry. There is no danger these cannot outlast. We will go on; this darkness, too, shall pass.

    3. ADESTE FIDELES (O COME, ALL YE FAITHFUL) The setting of this very popular Christmas carol is from the 1906 English Hymnal, with final verse descant and harmonization by David Willcocks. Christmas Revels Choruses, Portland Brass Quintet, and Audience, 2016 PLEASE SING WITH US!

    4. HICKS’ FAREWELL Suzannah Park, singer Suzannah Park of Asheville, North Carolina, learned this song from the singing of Daron Douglas in recent years. Ms. Douglas, a fiddler and hand weaver, learned the song from her grandmother who was the youngest child of Jane Hicks Gentry of Hot Springs, NC. Mrs. Gentry was a singer and storyteller of the mountains who recorded songs and ballads for the English song collector Cecil Sharp in 1916 and 1917. 5. THE TWELVE BROTHERS, PART 1 Kisha Jarrett, The Storyteller; Summer Olsson, illustration; Betsy Branch, fiddle A classic winter tale of redemption, told through the seasonal descent into the darkness of winter and the yearly return of spring. Compiled and reimagined by Bruce A. Hostetler from several Slavic and Greek source stories. Story music selected by Betsy Branch. All tunes are traditional except the haunting waltz “Cumberland,” composed by Larry Unger. 6. SHOES AND STOCKINGS The Christmas Revels Band A typical Appalachian old-time fiddle tune. It is said that fiddle player Quince Dillion, who had been a fife player in the Civil War, passed it along to Virginia fiddler Henry Reed before 1902, and thus it entered the American old-time music tradition. The arrangement is by Betsy Branch and Bill Tomczak. 7. THE WEXFORD CAROL This carol from County Wexford in Ireland is one of the oldest in the European tradition, dating to the 12th century. Arranged by Betsy Branch in 2009. Down Through the Winters CD, 2010

    8. THE TWELVE BROTHERS, PART 2 Kisha Jarrett, The Storyteller; Summer Olsson, illustration; Betsy Branch, fiddle 9. THE CHRISTMAS REVELS CHILDREN TOMTARNAS JULNATT (THE TOMTES’ CHRISTMAS NIGHT) Every Swedish farm family has its tomte, a notoriously grumpy gnome who helps make sure the farm is well maintained and the animals properly cared for. On Christmas night the children leave a bowl of special porridge in the barn to keep him happy. Christmas Revels Children’s Chorus, 2017 and 2020 MANX LULLABY Ian Anderson-Priddy, animation A cradle song from the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea. “Oh hush thee my dove, oh hush thee...my little brown bird.” The Christmas Revels Children created the artwork featured in the animation. THE TWELVE BROTHERS, PART 3 Kisha Jarrett, The Storyteller; Summer Olsson, illustration; Betsy Branch, fiddle 12. THE BELLS OF THE MORNING The folk song “Down in Yon Forest” was collected by Ralph Vaughan Williams in the early 20th century in Castleton, Derbyshire (near Haddon Hall). Here the song is given new words by Richard Lewis and arranged by Betsy Branch in 2007. Down Through the Winters CD, 2010 13. LORD OF THE DANCE W. David Shepherd, singer; Charley Rowley, Madison Rowley, dancers “Simple Gifts” is the Shaker tune that Sydney Carter used to set these modern lyrics. It was translated into dance using a compilation of traditional Morris dance steps by Carol Langstaff, Martin Graetz, and Jonathan Morris, and is now a central feature of every Christmas Revels. 14. CAILÍN DEAS CRÚITHE NA MBÓ (THE PRETTY GIRL MILKING HER COW) Betsy Branch, baritone fiddle; Kevin Burke, fiddle A traditional 18th-century Irish ballad. It was originally sung in Irish Gaelic, and later became popular in an English version. Arranged by Kevin Burke and Betsy Branch. 15. ABBOTS BROMLEY HORN DANCE Betsy Branch, fiddle This presentation was adapted in the 20th century from an ancient ritual for good luck in hunting the stag. It is still danced in the old lively style every September in the Staffordshire village of Abbots Bromley in England. Accompanying the dancers are the traditional folk Fool, Man-Woman, Hobby-Horse, and Boy Archer, linking it with the mumming traditions of Old Christmas. The music is “The Wheelwright Robinson’s Tune.” 16. THE TWELVE BROTHERS, PART 4 Kisha Jarrett, The Storyteller; Summer Olsson, illustration; Betsy Branch, fiddle 17. TRAVELLER’S PRAYER During the late 19th century, amateur folklorist Alexander Carmichael collected poems, prayers, invocations, hymns, and charms in the Gaelic-speaking regions of Scotland and published them under the title Carmina Gadelica. John Renbourn (1944-2015), English guitarist and composer, adapted and set to music this prayer to the moon from that book. Down Through the Winters CD, 2010 18. OH, WATCH THE STARS The Christmas Revels Children; Ian Anderson-Priddy, animation A song from St. Helena Island, one of the Sea Islands of Georgia and South Carolina. It was published in Ruth Crawford Seeger’s American Folk Songs for Christmas. The Revels Children created the artwork featured in the animation and also join in the chorus. Take Joy! CD, 2017, and Christmas Revels Children’s Chorus, 2020 19. THE TWELVE BROTHERS, PART 5 Kisha Jarrett, The Storyteller; Summer Olsson, illustration; Betsy Branch, fiddle

    20. FINLANDIA In 1899 Jean Sibelius composed a musical score for several historical tableaus depicting episodes from Finnish history, concluding with this hymn-like music. Later he set this final tableau as a stand-alone work, “Finlandia,” a tone poem for orchestra. The English lyrics sung here were written by Lloyd Stone in 1934. Christmas Revels Choruses, Portland Brass Quintet, and Audience, 2017 SING WITH US! 21. THE SHORTEST DAY Kisha Jarrett, The Storyteller This poem, written by Susan Cooper in 1977, is now an essential feature of Christmas Revels performances throughout the country. The accompanying music is Percy Grainger’s arrangement of “The Sussex Mummers’ Carol” played by the Portland Brass Quintet.

    22. THE SUSSEX MUMMERS’ CAROL The 2020 Christmas Revels Chorus and Children This is a fragment of a carol now sung widely, originating in the great musical traditions of Sussex, England. In each of the nine American cities where Christmas Revels is performed annually to celebrate the winter solstice, this is the song of parting and blessing. Brass instrument arrangement is by Brian Holmes, with descant and final verse harmonization by Ralph Vaughan Williams. The choruses, the audience, and the brass quintet of the 2019 Christmas Revels join you tonight in singing this carol! SING WITH US!

    WELCOME YULE!
