TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION From its earliest days, the Church has had an interest in the education of young people. In ancient Rome, teach-ers of boys had to resign their posts in order to become catechumens, since the education of boys was so keyed to the lore and worship of the gods. In other ages, public education has been so attuned to other values that crea-tive solutions have arisen. In late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Ireland, government schools had a goal of "Anglicizing" the Irish in culture and religion. Most Irish Catholics opted out in favor of "hedge schools." In these largely secret schools, meeting not just in the shadow of hedges but also in cottages and barns throughout Ireland, school-masters provided eager students with a classical educa-tion grounded in Greek and Latin, Irish literature, the banned Gaelic language, and the catechism of the Church. The so-called penal laws forbade Catholics from teaching young people publicly or privately, and "civil disobedience" ruled the day. In 1826, a British government study showed that of half a million Irish children enrolled in schools, 403,000 were in hedge schools! A woman named Nano Nagle defied the law by opening schools for the poor. Eventually her compan-ions became the Presentation Sisters. A layman named Edmund Rice, inspired by her courage, founded the Irish Christian Brothers for the same purpose. By 1820, the situation eased, since Irish Catholics had shown that they would defy any law that diminished their love of learning and threatened their faith. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Retired and Senior Volunteer Program
If you are 55 years of age or older and looking for a way to stay active and healthy, are newly re-tired, or just have some free time on you hands—then volunteering is for you. The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of the Community Ser-vice Society is a national program started here in Staten Island over 50 years ago that matches peo-ple who want to help, with a volunteer assignment that best suits their skills and interests. The time commitment can be as little as once a month to several days a week—depending on how much time you want to share. As a volunteer, you can feed the hungry at soup kitchens and food pantries or by delivering meals to homebound elderly. You can visit the sick or lonely as a friendly visitor or be a companion to someone who visually impaired. RSVP volun-teers also help by tutoring children who are hav-ing difficulty learning to read or mentoring chil-dren with frequent absenteeism. You can also help by preparing adults and recent immigrants for the high school equivalency exam, citizenship exam, or with finding employment. Some volun-teers help by providing administrative support at local non-profit organizations, while others assist local museums and cultural institutions as do-cents. With dozens of opportunities right here in Staten Island there is usually something for every-one! Plus as an RSVP volunteer, you will receive partial reimbursement for your travel and supple-mental accident insurance. To learn more about the program and to see if volunteering is right for you call 718 494-3222 or email [email protected] A little of your time can make a big difference in someone else’s life.
The Blessing of Animals will take place on Thursday, October 4th the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi at 2:30 p.m. in the courtyard of St. Peter– St Paul School, 129 Clinton Avenue.
- -Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright (c) J. S.
