First, ISM-Maryland, Inc. is now LIVE with Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook ac- counts. Look for links later in this issue and on the website. Join us on one of these social networks, “Like” us, start a conversation on supply man- agement best practices, etc. It’s never too late in your ca- reer to network online with your peers. Personally I re- ceive a lot of work-related improvement tips through so- cial media and think that you will too. But our sites take ac- tive participation and I’m counting on our members to visit, participate and help build our internet community. Second, in October, we host- ed an educational event and had great turn-out from mem- bers and non-members alike. The venue, DoubleTree Hotel in Columbia, MD was an ex- cellent location for our Mary- land commuters and seems to be a great spot to hold our events. It was rewarding to see many new members come out for the event. We all found the speaker, Bill Agee, Jr. engaging. We left with a lot of valuable tips on negoti- ating and a few funny stories as told by Bill. For those mem- bers who were unable to join us, I hope that you will come out in January to the next event as we will be in the same location with a new top- ic! Third, the Directors have been hard at work planning the next event that will occur in Janu- ary and are starting to plan March as well when we recog- nize “Supply Management Month.” Look for details later in this issue of the newsletter. Through these events, we are able to grow both profession- ally and through networking with other supply manage- ment professionals. Of course, Thanksgiving re- cently occurred and although the affiliate can’t take credit for this event, I thought I would let you know that I am thankful for your continued support of ISM-MD and ISM. ISM remains a global leader in educating supply manage- ment professionals and offer some great free webinars and online courses for members. Visit ISM’s website at www.ism.ws and click on the Education and Training tab to see a variety of methods you may participate in a class, whether virtual or face-to-face. Likewise, be sure to visit our website often to learn more about up- coming events or visit links to other educational opportuni- ties in our area. Through these offerings, there are many opportunities for you to invest a little time in develop- ing yourself professionally. I am so thankful that our mem- bers and non-members alike continue to provide positive feedback for the direction we are taking with our affiliate. Finally, I wanted to remind you that our fundraiser this year is $10 raffle tickets for a chance to have your registra- tion paid to attend the upcom- ing ISM national conference that will be held near Dallas, TX or for a chance to win $500. You can learn more about this raffle by visiting our website or by contacting a board member who is selling the tickets. We have a lot of remaining tickets still to be sold! I would love to see one of our local supply manage- ment professionals win this raffle. The last face-to-face opportunity to buy raffle tick- ets at an educational event will be January 10th. If you would still like a chance to win, you will need to contact any of the board members who have remaining tickets. Contact information for every- one is on our website.

December 2012 Issue

Hello fellow supply manage-ment colleagues!

A lot of activities have hap-pened since our last issue of the newsletter. To bring you up to speed, I thought I would share where we’ve been to date and what the rest of the membership year holds for us.

Ten Signs of Job Dissatisfaction—

Don’t Ignore Them! By Deborah Walker, Certified Career Management Coach

Are you completely happy with your cur-rent job? If not, now is a great time to analyze your job satisfaction. There are ten sure signs that you are experiencing job dissatisfaction. If you:

Dread Mondays or coming to work

Can’t wait for Friday

Are often bored at work

Feel tired or chronically fatigued

Avoid your boss and dread meetings

Have no enthusiasm or sense of self-worth

Feel like you are getting nowhere in your job

Take work stress home

Question your choice of industry or occupation

Can’t think of a way out Any of the above signs indicate a need for change. The biggest career mistake is to ignore those indicators. A head-in-the-sand mentality can lead to a down-ward career spiral that ends with disap-pointment and “what if” regrets. Here are three great ways to facilitate positive change.

Analyze your career choice.

Is the problem your boss or employer—or is it that you have chosen the wrong occupation? Before you take any action, make sure you know what needs to change. Don’t make the mistake of throwing away a good career (ex. accounting, sales, finance) when the problem is really the person you work for. On the flip side, if you’re not cut out for sales, then chang-ing employers isn’t going to help the problem.

ISM-Maryland, Inc., members and guests attending the October negotiation work-shop had the opportunity to hear from an accomplished master negotiator. ISM-MD, Inc.’s October education event was workshop on negotiations, present-ed by William D. Agee, Jr. Mr. Agee has 30 years of experience in private and public purchasing in retial, manufacturing and service acquisition organizations. And he uses these negotiation skills, not only in his professional life, he uses them in his daily personal life. His workshop had many practical exam-ples of how he used communication skills, his understanding of human na-ture, and above all, his careful and in-

depth research and planning to ensure he fully understood both sides of the ne-gotiation. Hard work is the secret to his success. Mr. Agee gave us a roadmap for negotia-tions, developing the strategy and the tactics to reach your strategic goals. Fortunately, he included checklists as handouts to help us develop our negotia-tion strategies and tactics. The handouts included:

Negotiation checklist

L-O-B worksheet

Negotiation Postmortem worksheet

He illustrated his workshop with many examples of how his techniques worked. He was able to show the importance of his research and knowledge of all facets of the issue being negotiated. To learn more about this presentation please visit our website.

A career coach can guide you to deter-mine which of these problems is causing your unhappiness and give you ideas for your next career move.

Update your resume. Updating your resume can give you a great confidence boost. You’ll feel better immediately if you know you are ready whenever opportunity knocks. Be careful, however, that your resume doesn’t resemble a house with too many additions, each resembling a different style. If you have simply added to the same old resume job after job, it’s time to “tear down that old shack” and rebuild your resume from the ground up. If your old resume format doesn’t live up to your professional image, you may want to consult a resume coach. You’d never wrap a ruby ring in old newspaper, and you should never present your ca-

reer with anything less than professional polish.

Brush up your interview skills. If you have been on the job for a couple of years, your interview skills are proba-bly rusty. Don’t make the mistake of blowing off the first few interviews as practice. They might be the perfect jobs for you! You’ll feel much more confident and comfortable if your interview skills are honed before you step into the first inter-view. To determine your current level of interview expertise, answer the following questions: Do you know the toughest interview questions—and how to answer them?

Can you answer the salary question without compromising the level of starting salary at offer time?

Can you recognize the most com-mon interview styles—and respond without showing stress?

If you aren’t sure, then it may be time to visit with a career coach who can help you prepare to WOW them in every inter-view. Job dissatisfaction is an indication of needed change. Take the steps of change by investing in the appropriate job-search skills and tools, and you will be in a position to change your job—and your life—for the better.
