Lemonade stands were spotted around town in Watchung Plaza and several in the Upper Montclair Busi- ness District. Lemonade Day is a nationwide educational opportunity for children to experience what it takes to run a business. Fourth grade students at Bradford were given the chance to partner with students from the Montclair State University School of Business to learn a bit about becom- ing entrepreneurs. The Bradford students met with the MSU business students for several weeks to get organized and plan for the big event. The students had to de- cide on the 4 Ps: price, product, place, and promotion—and most importantly had to find investors (a.k.a.—parents) to help them get started. There was a lot of excitement in Upper Montclair that first Sunday in May. There were three lemonade stands in close proximity—what competition! The kids had to be creative to lure in the business. A few of the stands not only sold lemonade and cookies in an effort to make a profit, but they also collected money for Charity Water, an organization that they learned about in class. They were able to clearly ar- ticulate what the organization was about when asked. from MFEE to attend Music in the Moun-

tains at Stroudsburg University in August.

cert, “Bradford’s Favorites,” will be held

on Thursday, May 26. Bradford

Singers/K/1/2 will perform at 9:15, and

Bradford Singers/3/4/5 will perform at

10:30. All of the students are working hard

to prepare for their Spring Concert.

mark Contest: Winners announced May 14.

ART: What we’re working on in Art—

Van Gogh Landscapes: Students are creat-

ing landscapes with oil pastels inspired by

Van Gogh’s painting and techniques. To learn

more about Van Gogh, visit www.vangogh-

gallery.com. We’ll also be extending our

Van Gogh lesson into the Presby Iris Contest

since Van Gogh loved to paint flowers.

Coming up: In conjunction with the cele-

bration of Earth Day, we will be creating

Picasso Guitars out of paper towel rolls,

cardboard, string, newspaper and construc-

tion paper in art. There is a wonderful ex-

hibit of Picasso Guitars at the MOMA from

February 13 through June 6. Details can

be found at www.moma.org/visit/calen-

dar/exhibitions/1101. Sometime in late

1912, Pablo Picasso made a guitar. Cob-

bled together from cardboard, paper,

string, and wire that he cut, folded,

threaded, and glued, Picasso’s silent in-

strument resembled no sculpture ever seen

before. In 1914 he reiterated his fragile

construction in a more fixed and durable

sheet metal form. These two Guitars, both

gifts from the artist to MOMA, bracket an

incandescent period of material and struc-

tural experimentation in Picasso’s work.

This exhibit explores this breakthrough

moment in 20th Century art.

Part of the money the Bradford PTA raised at last year’s big Raise the Roof fundraiser,

—approximately $21,000— has been used to fulfill technology wishlists from class-

room teachers. Specifically, the money went to purchase:

8 Flip video cameras and accessories (chargers, adapter wires) for digital story-telling.

8 iPods, charging adapters and headsets with splitters wires, for accessing and using

iTunesU and iTunesU K-12 resources such as historical videos, science demonstrations, in-

structional videos and art history information available on the iTunes site.

Consumables—3 new projector bulbs for the classrooms with SMART Boards.

11 HP copy-scan-printers for classrooms that did not have a printer locally.

8 digital picture cameras and accessories (still to be purchased).

The money was also used to expand the SMART Board initiative, adding projectors and

arms to current SMART Boards, mounting boards on classroom walls, and adding the first

board in the lower grades (first grade classroom). As of mid-May, Bradford will have 10

SMART Boards mounted in classrooms and one mobile SMART Board.

The SMART Boards are being used in the 3rd, 4th and 5th grades; all students in grades K

through 2 have also been exposed to them. The Flips can be signed out of tech lab by teach-

ers for use in class. For example, the third grade’s Ms. Macaluso is teaching a University Ex-

perience class on digital movie making using the cameras. The first grade is working on a

collaborative project, learning about habitats, classifying animals and then looking at the

metamorphosis of tadpoles into frogs. Students will take video of their tadpoles as they

change and put together a class informational movie.

“The first-graders are excited about the project we are working on, they have put a lot of en-

ergy into learning the information, asking good questions and can’t wait for next week when we

start using the cameras in tech class—they are going to become the experts,” Mrs. Tamasco said.

“There’s a lot of excitement from all the students about using the technology and having the ac-

cess to the tools,” she continued. “It gives them an opportunity to experience learning in new ways.”

Time to Make the Compost! You can help to improve the type of packaging used

in school lunches.

I think the families at Bradford understand the im-

portance of using reusable containers, but this past dis-

trict-wide Waste-Free Lunch event has brought the green coordinators at each school

together to work on a greater issue: the packaging used in school lunches. We’re piggy-

backing on Montclair Food Revolution’s push for school lunch food reform and making

sure when choosing a new food vendor, the packaging used is also taken into considera-

tion. If you would like to voice your opinion regarding this issue, please email our current

Board of Education food service provider, Cynthia Capaccio, and copy it to Dana Sullivan

and Dr Alvarez. At the very least we should ask for compostable or recyclable trays. You

can also voice your opinion at the next meeting Board of Education meeting May 16th at

7:30 p.m. in the George Innes Annex Cafeteria.

Interested in helping our green efforts? Please contact Luisa Esposito at

[email protected] or 973-744-3867.
