Director’s Cut A view from director Heather Evans

Panto is fun. Not just a bit of fun, but a huge great pot of it! Whether you are involved on stage, off stage, back stage or even front of house, it makes you smile, giggle and laugh out loud.

This is the first year I have run the Wheatsheaf family panto – but to be fair, it pretty much runs itself. Steve and the technical crew come up with new and exciting ways to stage and light it. More effects, more tech cues, more bangs and flashes and general techie cleverness.

Then there‟s the cast. They just get sillier and keener with every rehearsal. Suggestions fly round and people turn up with weird and wonderful props and costumes. Jokes are added, dance routines develop and songs are written.

We started with a great script, and have added Wheatsheaf fun to make this show fabulous. You don‟t have to take my word for it – just watch it, and don‟t forget to join in!

Rebecca plays Princess Beauty As Princess Beauty, Rebecca has plenty of time to catch up on her sleep during this performance. Let‟s hope she doesn‟t start snoring, or one of the cast might have to prod her!

Dawn plays Plop This is Dawn‟s first show and she is thrilled with to be a part of the panto. She is used to standing up in front of people though, as she runs a „Zumba‟ class – so don‟t be surprised if she breaks into a dance!

Anne plays Betty the Good Witch of the North Anne is loving being back in Panto and especially, the new wig! She is even threatening to take it home. With the part of Betty she is able to give vent to her northern roots, but she is not about to part with her

authentic Disney wand – even for a whippet and flat cap!

Tony plays Mother Droopy Tony is just „maid‟ for the part of Mother Droopy. Although it is a good job we aren‟t performing Cinderella as he had a right game trying to get his feet into some lady-like shoes!

Georgia plays Tinkle Georgia is enjoying playing the silly Tinkle alongside Wayne as Fiddle in the show. She particularly likes the songs and getting everyone to join in – so make sure you do!

Wayne plays Fiddle No one could be sillier in the panto than Fiddle (except perhaps Tinkle) and Wayne is perfect for the part. Let‟s hope his jokes get lots of laughs and not any groans!

Adam plays King Jeff King Jeff loves money and will do anything to make some more – including his hare-brained scheme to make „Foot Jumpers‟. Watch out for him trying to sell some in the auditorium after the show!

Roni plays Queen Britney Roni is playing Queen Britney and she has a hard time keeping King Jeff in check! A bit like real life really… She loves her queenly costume, but doesn‟t want any “Foot Jumpers”!

Jo plays the Cat Jo had the chance to pick any character for the panto and she picked the Cat. A love of milk and fish probably helped with the decision. She is also enjoying being very cheeky to the nasty Hogben!

Heather plays Hogben, the Bad witch of the South Yet again Heather is playing the witch in panto. In fact, her normal laugh is turning into the cackle because she does it so often! Just remember to „boo‟ when she looks at you with those scary eyes!

Wheatsheaf News

10 The Beauty Sleeping

Happy New Year! And what a year we have planned here at the Wheatsheaf! We are busy setting out our next season of plays and are getting more people involved both on and off stage. It is all very exciting and we hope to bring you some fantastic performances this year. And what better way to start the New Year than with panto!

We are having a great time with „The Beauty Sleeping‟ and we hope you do too. A huge welcome to Rebecca who is in her first major Wheatsheaf production after joining us late last year and taking part in „Walking in a Wheatsheaf Wonderland‟. And a big hello to Dawn who is on stage with us for the very first time. Good luck to both of you!

We have just had the theatre AGM, and there has been only one change to the committee. Mike Hooper has left the post of Secretary – and Joanne Russell has replaced him. Thanks Mike for all your hard work over the years. Mike has been a constant at the theatre for a number of years and he will be sorely missed.

There were two awards at this years AGM – the „Bill Heslop Memorial Shield‟ which went to Alan Wales for his direction of „Two„ and his acting as Charles Condomine in ‟Blithe Spirit‟ and the Joe Williams Cup, which was awarded to Roni Tillman for her tireless work doing publicity for the group. Congratulations to all – both awards were much deserved!

Also awarded at the AGM were 4 new Lifetime Memberships. These were awarded to Mike Hooper for his work as Secretary over more years than any of us can remember; Anne Collins for her 30 years with the company; Neville Russell for all of his contributions to the theatre as an actor, on front of house and on set building; and finally to Stephen Hocking for his 20 something years of technical work at the theatre.

Remember – if you would like to be involved with the theatre in any capacity, why not come along to our Wheatsheaf Wednesdays. It is a great opportunity to meet us all, and to learn some more about all things theatre, and whether you would like to do a bit of painting or get on stage you are more than welcome! See you there!

Chris
