Monotheism)] (and ask Me for anything) I will respond to your (invocation).
Verily! Those who scorn My worship [i.e. do not invoke Me, and do not

"Is not He (better than your gods) Who responds to the distressed one, when

you remember!"

The Amir al-Mu'minin Abu Hafs 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (ra) said:
"I heard the Messenger of Allah [ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص] saying, 'Actions are only by
intentions, and each man has only that which he intends. Whoever's
emigration is for Allah and His Messenger, then his emigration is for Allah and
His Messenger. Whoever's emigration is for some worldly gain which he can
acquire or a woman he will marry, then his emigration is for that which he
emigrates."

All Praise and thanks be to Allah! We praise and thank Him, ask Him for His Help and
Forgiveness, and we seek refuge in Allah from the evils of our souls and the mischief of
our deeds. He whom Allah guides will not be misled, and he whom Allah misleads will
never have a guide. I testify that there is no deity but Allah alone, without any partners,
and that Muhammad is His 'Abd (worshiper) and Messenger.
Putting together a work of this nature is a monumental task that obviously takes more
effort than that of a translator and editor. As is always, to mention all those who aided
me with their various input would be an equally lengthy task. But, of course, a few
people stand out for their significant commitment in making this book a success. Special
thanks to my Parents, Wife & Khayer Uncle.
Of course, first and last, all praise and thanks are due to Allah (SWT), may He (AWJ)
forgive us for any mistakes and show us the right path. Aameen.

The Beautiful Names and Attributes of Allah

All praise is due to Allah. O Allah, send prayers and salutations upon the Messenger
Muhammad, upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his
guidance
By the Will of the Almighty, I am going to write on this beautiful and valuable subject
which shall cover Allah's Names and Attributes with along the benefits of those and
some others rulings as well which many of us [Muslims] have taken very lightly whereas
they are but extremely important to know about. It is because, Belief in Allah's Names
and Attributes is one of the pillars of our belief in Allah [SWT] and having the opposite
belief may nullify one's identity of Islam and can be the final abode as Hell-fire. may
Allah protect us from ignorance, enrich us with divine Knowledge and guide us to the
goodness in both Worlds.
It is known that believing in the Oneness of Allah's Names and Attributes is one of the
three categories of Tawheed (Islamic Monotheism): Tawheed of Lordship, Tawheed of
Worship, and Tawheed of Allah's Names and Attributes.
According to the Islamic Creed, Monotheism consists of three major elements, and
without any of them no one can have or attain Faith. They are as follow:
1. Tawhidur-Rububiyyah (Maintaining the Oneness of Allah's Lordship).
2. Tawhidul-Uluhiyyah (Maintaining the Oneness of Allah's Divinity).
3. Tawhidul-Asma wa As-Sifat (Maintaining the Unity of Allah's Names and Attributes).
♦Tawhid al-Asmaa was Sifat is to single out Allah, Exalted be He and Sublime with His
Names and Attributes. This entails two things:
1. Affirmation; that is, we should affirm for Allah the Most High and Sublime, all His
Names and Attributes which we affirm for Himself in His Book or in the Sunnah of the
Prophet [ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص].
The Beautiful Names and Attributes of Allah
8
2. Rejection of like; that is, we should not associate any partner with Allah in His
Names and Attributes as He, the Exalted, says,
"There is nothing whatever like unto Him, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-
Seeing." al-Qur'an, Surah Ash-Shuraa: 11
This verse prove that in all His Attributes, no one is like Him among the creatures.
Even if they share in the basic meaning (of the word), they actually differ in its essence.
Therefore, whoever does not affirm what Allah has affirmed for Himself as a Mu'attil
(denier) and this rejection of his is like that of Fir'awn.
But whoever affirms them but makes Tashbeeh (giving semblance of Human attributes
of Allah) is like the idolaters who join partners with Allah in worship while the one who
affirms the Names and Attributes without joining equals (with Allah) is from the
monotheism.
It is regarding this category of Tawheed that some among the Muslims went astray and
got split into many sects. Some of them followed the path of Ta'teel (rejection of Allah's
Names and Attributes) and reject them. They reject the Attributes claiming to uphold
Allah's greatness thereby, but they are astray! This is owing to the fact that the He
whose greatness is been actually defended is He regarding whom defective attributes and
blemish are rejected. His word will be defended so that it is not unclear or misleading.
So, if one says, 'Allah does not have hearing, sight, knowledge, or ability', he has not
upheld perfection for Allah, but rather, he has attributed the worst of deficiencies to
Him, and ascribed confusion and misguidance to His words because Allah repeatedly
mentions and affirms in His Speech that He is,
"Al-Hearing, the All-Seeing"
"The Noble, the Wise"
"The Oft-Forgiving, the Merciful"
The Beautiful Names and Attributes of Allah
9
so, if He affirms them (i.e., the Attributes) in His Speech while He does not possess
them, it is from the worst of confusions, misguidance and great defect in the Speech of
Allah the Mighty and Sublime!
Some of them took to making Tamtheel (likening Allah's Attributes to those of the
creatures) claiming to affirm what Allah has describes Himself with! They are astray
because they have not estimated Allah His Right estimate since they ascribe blemish and
defect to Him by considering the One who is perfect in every respect like the one who is
defective in every respect.
If connecting the superiority of the perfect with the one who is defective implies bring
down the perfect - as it is said:
"Don't you see that the sword is been under-estimated If it is said that the sword
cuts more than a stick?!"
How about comparing the Perfect with the defective? This is from the most serious
crime against Allah the Mighty and Sublime! However, the Mu'attiloon (deniers of
Allah's Names and Attributes) are far more grievous in their rejection although both
parties have not estimated Allah in His right estimate.
So, what is obligatory for us to believe in whatever Allah describes and names Himself
with in His Book and upon the tongue of His Messenger [ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص] without making
Tahreef (distortion) or Ta'teel (rejection) or Takyeef (saying how) or Tamtheel
(likening).
This was the position of Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah be pleased with
him) and others among the people of knowledge." reported by ash-Shaykh ibn
Uthaimeen, Commentary of Kitab at-Tawheed, Vol.1, P.17-19
Moreover, Shaykhul Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah be pleased with him)n said,
"Tawheed does not mean only Twahidur-Rububiyyah; Allah Alone is the Creator of the

whole universe according to what is maintained by some theologians and sufis, who
believe that when they prove that with their insufficient evidence, then they will have
confirmed the true essence of Tawhid. In addition, they have believed that when they
believe in that and when their souls are filled with it, then they will have firmly believes
in all the Attributes Allah deserves to be described with, glorifies Allah, keeping Him far
above all deficiencies, and believes that Allah is the Creator of everything, he will not be
regarded as muwahhid (monotheist) until he testifies that there is no deity that deserves
to be worshipped but Allah alone. Furthermore, man should adhere to worshipping
Allah alone, associating no partners with Him. The Arabic word ilah (i.e., God) means
that Worshipped Deity that deserves to be worshipped alone, not the one Able to create.
Thus, a person, who explains the word ilah saying that it means the One Who is
capable of creating from nothing and believing that this is the most accurate description
of God, and that this is the true Tawheed that one should believe in, is unaware of the
reality of Tawheed which the Prophet [ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص] was sent to call people to. It is known
that the People who believe in that are the theologians like Abul-Hasan Al-Ash'ari and
his followers. Besides, it is well known of fact that the Arab polytheists who lived in the
Pre-Islamic Period of Ignorance (the Jahiliyyah) and the early period of Islam firmly
believed that Allah Alone is the Creator of everything, yet they were regarded as
disbelievers. About that, Allah says,
"And most of them believe not in Allah except while they associate others with
Him." (Qur'an: Yusuf: 106)
In addition, a group of Salaf (early Muslim scholars) said,
"When the Arab polytheists were asked, 'Who created the heavens and the earth?
They say, 'Allah.' However, they worshipped others with Allah."

Allah, the Almighty says,
"(Muhammad), say to them, "Tell me, if you know, to whom does the earth and
its contents belong? They will say: "It is Allah's!" Say: "Will you not then
remember? Say: "Who is (the) Lord of the seven heavens, and (the) Lord of the
Great Throne? They will say: "Allah." Say: "Will you not then fear Allah (believe
in His Oneness, obey Him, believe in the Resurrection and Recompense for each
and every good or bad deed). Say "In Whose Hand is the sovereignty of
everything (i.e. treasures of each and everything)? And He protects (all), while
against Whom there is no protector, (i.e. if Allah saves anyone none can punish
or harm him, and if Allah punishes or harms anyone none can save him), if you
know." [Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 12, Page 145] They will say: "(All that belongs)
to Allah." Say: "How then are you deceived and turn away from the truth?"
Qur'an: Al-Mu'minun: 84-89) reported by ash-Shaykh Dr. Salih al-Fawzan,
Guide to Sound Creed, P.32-33
Repudiating any of the Allah's Names or Attributes is an act of disbelief which at that
time a group of the people from the Quraish used to do. Believing in all of the Names
of Allah and His Attributes is obligatory to the Believers. Allah, Exalted be He, said,
"...while they disbelieve in the Most Merciful. Say, 'He is my Lord; there is no
deity except Him. Upon Him I rely, and to Him is my return." al-Qur'an
♦Disbelieving in the Most Merciful: Repudiate that Name through they believe in
Allah. The 'Most Merciful' is one of the Names of Allah, and 'Mercy' is one of His
Attributes.
♦Say: O Muhammad! Disprove of the disbelievers' repudiation of Allah's Name 'The
Most Merciful' by saying, ...He is my Lord; there is no deity except Him. Upon Him I
rely, and to Him is my return.'
The Beautiful Names and Attributes of Allah
12
There is no doubt but all of the Names of Allah are beautiful to the highest degree as
Allah, Exalted be He, said,
"And (all) the Most Beautiful Names belong to Allah." al-Qur'an 7:180
There is a beautiful story behind the revelation of this Verse as follows: 'The Prophet
used [ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص] during the Tahajjud in Sujud he used to make du'a to Allah. He [ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص]
to call Allah in prostration and part of the call we are taught that you call out to Allah
using all His [Allah's} Names and Qualities. So, the Prophet [ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص] in his sujud they
[people] heard him saying 'Ya Rahmanu, Allahummah Ya Rahmanu, Ya Rahimu {O
Allah! You Who is Rahman, Who You Who is Rahim (i.e. Rahman is a term is full of
mercy that encompasses entire creation of Allah and Rahim is a specialized mercy
specially for those who believe in Allah)}. So when the disbelievers heard him they said
look at him [the Prophet (pbuh)], he was the one telling us to One God and here he is
calling quite a few. He says 'Rahman, Rahim, Allah', he must make his mind up. And
the Verse was revealed." reported by Ibn Abbas, Tafsir at-Tabari
Also, when the statement "In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, Most Merciful"
was first written on the document of the Treaty of Al-Hudaybiyah, the polytheists said,
"We do not know the 'Most Gracious', and thus the formula will be 'By Your Name, O
Allah,"(al-Bukhari) On that occasion, Allah revealed that read, "...while they disbelieve
in the Most Merciful...".
Indeed, Most Beautiful Names belong to Allah. We [Muslims] definitely need to learn
more about the Names and Attributes of Allah, it is because with regard to Allah's
Names and Attributes, we must set a limit to ourselves to the extent that what is
mentioned in the Noble Qur'an and the Sunnah [Prophetic Traditions]. It is impossible
to understand or grasp for the human being about what Allah, Exalted be He, with HIs
Might, Majesty and Magnificence - deserves in terms of His Names and Attributes. It is
The Beautiful Names and Attributes of Allah
13
clearly prohibited for us to speak about something we do not have any knowledge.
Allah, Exalted be He said,
"And follow not (O man i.e., say not, or do not or witness not, etc.) that of
which you have no knowledge (e.g. one's saying: "I have seen," while in fact he
has not seen, or "I have heard," while he has not heard). Verily! The hearing,
and the sight, and the heart, of each of those you will be questioned (by Allah)."
al-Qur'an 17:36
Speaking on something which we have no knowledge shall bring nothing but the
destruction itself. And none but the ignorant and those who are gone astray speak on
the basis of ignorance. As the Messenger of Allah [ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص] said,
"Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak a good word or
remain silent..." al-Bukhari & Muslim
As it is said that there should be a set limit regarding the Names and Attributes of
Allah, related to that, anyone should be far away from giving a Name Allah has not
given Himself, and refusing or rejecting a Name that He [Allah] has given Himself. It is
no way befitting to do that as that would be a biggest crime and grave violation totally
against the Rights that Allah has over us. None but the ignorant and people who are
gone astray may dare to do those kind of crimes.
Regarding the Ninety-Nine Names of Allah, the Prophet [ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص] said,
"Verily , Allah has ninety-nine Names - one short of one hundred. Whoever
enumerates them [Enumerates them: means to memorise them, to understand
their meaning, and to worship Allah based on the significance of those
meanings], will enter Paradise." al-Bukhari & Muslim
The Beautiful Names and Attributes of Allah
14
However, there is no specific number of the Names of Allah, as the Messenger of Allah
,said [ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص]
"I ask you by all of Your Names that You have Named Yourself with, have
revealed in Your Book, have taught to one of Your creation, or have kept
exclusively with Your knowledge from the matters of the unseen."
This hadith recorded by Imam Ahmad, Ibn Hibban, al-Hakim & al-Albani mentioned it
in al-Ahadeeth As-Saheehah (199)
We have no knowledge about those Names which Allah ahs kept with Himself. We only
know what have reached to us through the revelation of Qur'an & Sunnah.
Yet, some of us may argue or take opposite position that Allah has only ninety-nine
Names based on the previous hadith of al-Bukhari & Muslim. But, in reality, that hadith
does not solely bear the indication of the fact that Allah has only ninety-nine Names. It
is because had that been an indication or intended meaning, the wording of the hadith
would have been,
"Allah has a total ninety-nine Names" or some similar wording which points to a
finite numbers." reported by ash-Shaykh Ibn Uthaimeen, The Beautiful Names
and Attributes of Allah, P30
Regarding the ninety-nine Names mentioned in the previous hadith, it is not
authentically reported that the Prophet [ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص] listed them on any single occasion,
although there is a narration that lists ninety-nine names, but it is weak.
Regarding this fact, ash-Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah said, "Those names being
specifically mentioned is not from the speech of the Prophet [ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص]. This is a point of
consensus among the people who have knowledge of his sayings." Majmoo Al-Fatawa
(6/383)
The Beautiful Names and Attributes of Allah
15
Moreover, regarding that same matter, ash-Shaykh Ibn Hajr al-Ashqalani explained that,
"Imam Bukhari & Imam Muslim rejected this hadith [i.e., names being specifically
mentioned], not just because it was related through one person, namely, Al-Waleed; but
also because of the other inconsistencies in the narration, in addition to the possibility
that the wording is taken from more than one narration." Fathul-Bari (11/215)
Prominent scholar ash-Shaykh Ibn Uthaimeen stated that, "The Prophet [ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص]
referred to ninety-nine specific names in the aforementioned narration, but there is no
authentic hadith in which he lists those names. Consequently, our Pious Predecessors
have disagreed on the names that should be contained in that list." reported by ash-
Shaykh Ibn Uthaimeen, The Beautiful Names and Attributes of Allah, P30
Similarly, when ash-Shaykh Dr. Saleh al-Saleh was asked about the Names of Allah
whether they are Limited to 99 or are they Limitless, and in response explained, Al-
Bukhaaree and Muslim reported on the authority of Abu Hurayrah (radiallahu ‘anhu)
that the Prophet [ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص] said:
"Allah has ninety nine names, one hundred minus one; and he who counts them all will
enter Al-Jannah (the Garden Of Heaven), and Allah is "witr” (One) and loves the witr
(i.e. odd numbers)." al-Bukhaari, At-Tirmidhi, An-Nasaai, Ibn Majah
"Counting” Allah’s ninety nine names means: knowing them, learning them by heart,
understanding them, believing in them, good observance towards them, presentation of
their boundaries in our dealings with Allah, and supplicating Allah through them. Thus,
the hadeeth means that whoever committed those names to memory, contemplated their
implications, respected their meanings, conducted himself in accordance with them,
sanctified their Owner, such a person will surely be rewarded with the Gardens of
Paradise.
There is a consensus among the scholars that Allah’s names are not confined to the
number mentioned by the Prophet [ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص]. His [ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص] statement simply tells us that
a Muslim who properly believes in and applies those ninety nine names will surely enter
The Beautiful Names and Attributes of Allah
16
Al-Jannah. It does not negate the existence of other names for the Almighty. The
Prophet [ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص] told us about entering Al-Jannah, not about the total number of
Allah’s names.
The proof that there are other names which the Creator did not reveal to us, is the
following hadeeth of the Prophet [ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص]: If any Muslim afflicted with distress or grief
makes this supplication, his supplication will be accepted: ‘Oh Allah, I am Your slave,
son of Your slave, son of Your maidservant. My forehead is in Your hand. Your
command concerning me prevails, and Your decision concerning me is just. I call upon
You by every one of the beautiful names by which You have described Yourself, or
which You have revealed in Your Book, or have taught any one of Your creatures, or
which You have chosen to keep in the knowledge of the unseen with You, to make the
Qur’aan the delight of my heart, the light of my breast, and remove of any grief,
sorrows, and afflictions’, Allah will remove one’s affliction and replace it with joy and
happiness.” The Companions, then, said; "Do we have to learn these words?” The
Prophet [ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص] replied: "Yes, anyone who heard them should learn them." Ahmed,
Abu Awaana, Abu Ya’la, Al-Bazzar
We reiterate the rule that the only names and attributes to be ascribed to Allah are those
mentioned in the Qur’aan or in the authentic Sunnah; they are directly communicated
to us and are not the products of opinion and interpretation. Allah is to be described
only by the attributes with which He had described Himself or with which His Prophet
had described Him. And He is to be named only by the names with which He [ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص]
had named Himself or with which His Prophet [ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص] had named Him.
Now, In Sha Allah I will list the ninety-nine Names of Allah from the research of the
prominent scholar Ibn Uthaimeen as he stated that, "I have gathered the following
ninety-nine Names from the Book of Allah, Exalted be He, and the Sunnah of the His
Messenger [ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص]. Amongst them I have listed eighty-one Names from the Book of

However, some people argue that, 'the time' is one of Allah's Names, since the
Messenger of Allah [ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص] said, Allah - the Possessor of Mighty and Majesty - said,
"The son of Adam annoys me: He curses 'the time', and I am 'the time'. The
matter is in My Hand: I rotate the night and the day." related by al-Bukhari &
Muslim
This, however, in no way proves that 'the time' is one of Allah's Names. Those who
curse time refer to the span of time during which tragedies take place; they do not refer
to Allah [SWT]. Allah explained the meaning of "I am 'the time'" with His saying, "The
matter is in My Hand: I rotate the night and the day." Allah is the Creator of time and
of what takes place during time. He rotates between day and night. Hence, time means
the passage of day and night. It becomes clear, therefore, that, in the aforementioned
Hadeeth, it is no possible that 'the time' refers to Allah." ash-Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen,

It is also said by Ibn al-Qayyim that, man's endeavours in life arise from two vital
capacities and from them first one is - a theoretical capacity of awareness, and the
second one is - a practical capacity of willingness to act. And therefore his complete
happiness lies on both. The perfection of the theoretical capacity of awareness comes
about by knowing his Creator and His Beautiful Names and Attributes and also lies in
knowing the path that drives to Him and its obstacle, and by knowing his own self and
its flaws. By means of these things, he will attain perfection of the theoretical capacity of
awareness. The most knowledgeable people are those who know them best.
Allah, Exalted be He, says,
"All Praise and thanks are due to Allah, the Lord of the Alamin (mankind, jinn
and all that exists). The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, the Only Owner (and
Only Ruling Judge) of the Day of Recompense (i.e., the day of Resurrection)" al-
Fatihah 1:1-4
These Qur'anic verses contains the first principle, and that is to have knowledge of the
Lord, Exalted be He, and to have knowledge of His Beautiful Names, Attributes, and
Deeds. The Names that are mentioned in this Surah are the bases of the Beautiful
Names of Allah, the Almighty, namely Ar-Rabb and Ar-Rahman.
The Name 'Allah' belongs to the Divine Attributes, and the Name 'Ar-Rabb' belongs to
His Attributes of Lordship and the Name of 'Ar-Rahman' belongs to the quality of
Benevolence and Generosity.
He, Most High, also says,
"You (Alone) we worship and You (Alone) we ask for help (for each and
everything)." al-Fatihah 1:5
This Qur'anic verse contains the knowledge of the road that leads to Him, which is only
found by worshipping Him Alone with that which He loves and prefers, and by asking
His help to worship Him properly.
The Beautiful Names and Attributes of Allah
22
And, He, Exalted be He, says,
"Guide us to the Straight Way." al-Fatihah 1:6
This Qur'anic verse declares that the servant has no way to achieve happiness except by
keeping on the Straight Way, and that there is no way to this straight path without the
guidance of Allah. And just as he cannot worship Him, except with His Help, he cannot
stand firm on the road except with His guidance.
Allah, the Gracious, the Majestic, also says,
"Not (the way) of those who earned Your Anger (such as the Jews), nor of those
who went astray (such as the Christian)." al-Fatihah 1.7
This Qur'anic verse declares that there are two ways to deviate from the Straight Way,
and that one way is corruption of knowledge and belief, and other is that concerned
with the corruption of one's intentions and actions.
Therefore, the beginning of the Surah speaks about mercy, the middle speaks about
guidance, and the end speaks about favor and blessings. The servant receives blessings
according to his level of guidance, and the guidance he receives is according to the
amount of mercy he receives from Allah. So the whole issue returns to His Blessings
and Mercy, which are the characteristics of Lordship." reported by ash-Shaykh Ibn al-
Qayyim, al-Fawaw'id: a collection of wise sayings, P.30-32
So, we always call Allah, Exalted be He, by His Beautiful Names and Attributes with the
hope of His Divine Help and goodness in both worlds.
The Beautiful Names and Attributes of Allah
23
As the Prophet [ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص] said,
"Verily , Allah has ninety-nine Names - one short of one hundred. Whoever
enumerates them [Enumerates them: means to memorise them, to understand
their meaning, and to worship Allah based on the significance of those
meanings], will enter Paradise." al-Bukhari & Muslim
And, some of the scholars explained this hadith in details so that anyone can be highly
benefited at large without any misconception or doubt. This Hadith was reported in two
different wordings: first, "ahsaha” and second, anyone who memorizes them, will enter
Jannah. The word ‘ahsaha’ means to memorize by heart and to act according to them.
Thus, whoever learns the Names of Allah by heart and acts accordingly will be admitted
to Jannah.
However, if one memorizes the Names of Allah by heart, but does not act or believe in
them, they will be of no avail. The word ‘ahsaha’ means to memorize and act upon
them. Therefore, it is Wajib upon whoever memorizes Allah’s Names to act accordingly.
For example, a person should be ‘Rahim’, i.e. show mercy to others and should also
believe that Allah is Al-`Aziz (the Ever-Mighty), Al-Hakim (the Most Wise), Al-Ra’uf
(the Most Compassionate), Al-Rahim (the Most Beneficent), Al-Qadir (the All
Powerful) Who has unlimited knowledge of all things.
Such a person should fear Allah and remember that He is watching them and should
not persist in committing sins of which His Lord knows. They should avoid sins and all
forms of Shirk (associating others with Allah in His Divinity or worship).
One should exert all his efforts to memorize and act upon the Names of Allah, believe
in Him and His Messenger, affirm the Names and the Attributes which Allah has
affirmed for Himself in a manner befitting His majesty without Tahrif (distortion of the
meaning), Ta`til (negation of the meaning or function of Allah’s Attributes), Takyif
(descriptive designation of Allah’s Attributes), or Tamthil (likening Allah’s Attributes to
those of His Creation) and believe that Allah is Perfect in His Essence, His Names, His
Attributes and His Deeds, with no peer, equal or rival. Allah (Glorified and Exalted be
He) says in His Noble Book:
The Beautiful Names and Attributes of Allah
24
"Say [ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص]: "He is Allah, (the) One. "Allah-us-Samad [Allah the Self-
Sufficient Master, Whom all creatures need, (He neither eats nor drinks)]. "He
begets not, nor was He begotten. "And there is none co-equal or comparable
unto Him."
One must believe that Allah is the Self-Sufficient, Who is similar to nothing and
nothing is comparable to Him; Whom all creatures need, Who is Perfect in His Essence,
Who neither begets nor was He begotten, and Whom none is co-equal or is similar to
Him. Allah (Exalted be He) says: There is nothing like Him; and He is the All-Hearer,
the All-Seer. And: Do you know of any who is similar to Him? And: So put not forward
similitude for Allah (as there is nothing similar to Him, nor He resembles anything).
There is nothing equal, comparable, or that can rival Allah (Exalted be He). He is
Perfect in all things; His Knowledge, His Essence, His Wisdom, His Mercy, His Honor,
His Power, and in all His Names which if one memorizes and acts accordingly, will
allow them admission to Jannah.
However, if the disobedient memorize and enumerate the Names of Allah, they will be
subject to Allah’s Will; if He wills, He may forgive them, and if He wills He may punish
them and eventually admit them to Jannah after they are taken out of the Fire and are
purified provided that they have died as Muslims believing in the Oneness of Allah.
Allah (Glorified be He) says: If you avoid the great sins which you are forbidden to do,
We shall expiate from you your (small) sins
Major sins include all forms of Shirk, Kufr (disbelief), and the sins that were forbidden
by Allah and their doers cursed, and warned of a severe punishment and Allah’s Wrath.
The servant to Allah, male and female, must shun them for Allah (Glorified be He)
says: If you avoid the great sins which you are forbidden to do, We shall expiate from
you your (small) sins i.e., the minor sins and admit you to a Noble Entrance (i.e.
Paradise).
The Prophet [ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص] said: The Five (Obligatory Daily) Prayers, from one Jumu’ah
(Friday Prayer) to the next and from one Ramadan to the next are expiation for (sins
committed) in between, as long as major sins have been avoided. According to another
The Beautiful Names and Attributes of Allah
25
narration: …so long as major sins are not committed. Major sins include Zina, theft,
undutifulness to parents, severing the ties of kinship, consuming Riba, Ghibah,
Namimah, fleeing during battle, and magic, in addition to other sins which Allah
forbids.
Therefore, memorizing the Magnificent Names of Allah is one means of true happiness
and being admitted into Jannah provided that one acts according to them, remains
steadfast in obeying Allah and His Messenger, and does not persist in committing major
sins.
Moreover, according to the Tafsir of Ibn Kathir it is stated that, Abu Hurayrah narrated
that the Messenger of Allah said, (Verily, Allah has ninety-nine Names, a hundred less
one; whoever counts (and preserves) them, will enter Paradise. Allah is Witr (One) and
loves Al-Witr (the odd numbered things),) The Two Sahihs collected this Hadith. We
should state that Allah's Names are not restricted to only ninety-nine.
For instance, in his Musnad, Imam Ahmad recorded that `Abdullah bin Mas`ud said
that the Messenger of Allah [ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص] said;
"Any person who is overcome by sadness or grief and supplicates, `O Allah! I
am Your servant, son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your Hand. Your
decision concerning me shall certainly come to pass. Just is Your Judgement
about me. I invoke You by every Name that You have and that You called
Yourself by, sent down in Your Book, taught to any of Your creatures, or kept
with You in the knowledge of the Unseen that is with You. Make the Glorious
Qur'an the spring of my heart, the light of my chest, the remover of my grief and
the dissipater of my concern.' Surely, Allah will remove his grief and sadness and
exchange them for delight.) The Prophet was asked "O Messenger of Allah!
Should we learn these words'' He said, "Yes. It is an obligation on all those who
hear this supplication to learn it." Tafsir Ibn Kathir, al-Qur'an 7:180
may the Almighty protect us, forgive us and guide us to the goodness in both Worlds.
Aameen.
The Beautiful Names and Attributes of Allah
26
As now by the Will of Allah, Exalted be He, we are well aware of the importance of the
Beautiful Names and Attributes, we should never be negligence in this regard ever,
rather we should be more beware and study on this subject and act upon it
wholeheartedly. If anyone denies these then they are undoubtedly in error and gone
astray, they should immediately turn to Allah and seek forgiveness. As the disbelievers
used to mockery out of Allah's Beautiful Names and Attributes, and some others have
completely denied. It is also stated in Tafsir of Ibn Kathir that, Al-`Awfi said that Ibn
`Abbas said about Allah's statement,
"and leave the company of those who belie His Names"
"To belie Allah's Names includes saying that Al-Lat (an idol) derived from
Allah's Name.''
Ibn Jurayj narrated from Mujahid that he commented,
"and leave the company of those who belie His Names)"
"They derived Al-Lat (an idol's name) from Allah, and Al-`Uzza (another idol)
from Al-`Aziz (the All-Mighty).''
Qatadah stated that Ilhad refers to associating others with Allah in His Names (such as
calling an idol Al-`Uzza). The word Ilhad ﴿used in the Ayah in another from ﴾means
deviation, wickedness, injustice and straying. The hole in the grave is called Lahd,
because it is a hole within a hole, that is turned towards the Qiblah (the direction of the
prayer)." Tafsir Ibn Kathir, al-Qur'an 7:180
From above explanation we should beware of mocking, or disbelieving in the Names
and Attributes of Allah or oneself do not seek to establish attributes for Allah, except
that which affirmed in the Book [al-Qur'an] and the Sunnah. may Allah protect us from
the ignorance as He, The Most High, says:
"Whomsoever Allah sends astray, none can guide him; and He lets them wander
blindly in their transgressions. " al-Qur'an 7:186
The Beautiful Names and Attributes of Allah
27
We also ask Allah, Exalted be He, to make a distance of east to west between us and
those who when they are called to the guidance but turn their heel back. Allah, the
Gracious, says,
"And if you call them to guidance, they follow you not. It is the same for you
whether you call them or you keep silent." al-Qur'an 7:193
and also says,
"And if you call them to guidance, they hear not and you will see them looking
at you, yet they see not. " al-Qur'an 7:198
Prominent scholars Imam Ahmad [may Allah be pleased with him] said, "Allah may not
be described except with what He has described His Own Self with, or with what His
Messenger has described him with. This cannot go beyond the Qur'an and the hadeeth."
reported by Imam Ahmad in his Musnad (1/391, 452)
It is because that may lead us to the kufr and denying the Truth of Allah, Exalted be
He. Allah, The Most High, says,
"Those who reject Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations,
etc.), We shall gradually seize them with punishment in ways they perceive not."
al-Qur'an 7:182
It is also stated by the Almighty, Exalted be He, that,
"...Then do you believe in a part of the Scripture and reject the rest? Then what
is the recompense of those who do so among you, except disgrace in the life of
this world, and on the Day of Resurrection they shall be consigned to the most
grievous torment. And Allah is not unaware of what you do." al-Qur'an 2:85
It should be taken into the consideration very seriously that if it is said that anyone who
even denies or rejects or mock at any of the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah [ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص]
The Beautiful Names and Attributes of Allah
28
whether small or big then their Muslim identity is nullified and they are gone out of the
fold of Islam, and in that circumstance they need to re-utter the Shahada and enter into
the fold of Islam again.
Shaykhul Islam Muhammad ibn Abdil-Wahhab (may Allah be pleased with him) said
know that the things that nullify one's Islam (nawaaqidh) are ten things, and three of
them are as follows,
1. Whoever hates something that the Messenger of Allah [ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص] came with, even if he
acts according to it, then he has disbelieved. The proof is the statement of Allah the
Most High,
"That is because they disliked what Allah had sent down so He rendered their
actions useless." al-Qur'an 49:9
2. Whoever mocks anything from the Religion of the Messenger or Allah's reward or
punishment has disbelieved. The proof is the statement of Allah the Most High,
"Say: 'Was it Allah, His Verses, or His Messenger you were mocking? Make no
excuse, verily you have disbelieved after your belief." al-Qur'an 9:65-66
Anyone who mocks anything that the Messenger [ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص] came with, be it obligatory or
recommended, is an apostate from the Religion of Islam. So, what do you say about
someone who says, "Growing the beard, trimming the moustache, removing armpit
hair, washing the knuckle...These are insignificant things!" This is exactly what is meant
by mockery of the Religion of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic. When they say this thing,
and if they know (it is from the Religion), then they have apostated, since this is
belittling what the Messenger [ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص] came with. It is obligatory to have great
reverence for the Sunnah of the Messenger [ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص] and respect it.
Notice His, the Majestic, statement,
The Beautiful Names and Attributes of Allah
29
"Verily you have disbelieved after your belief."
This proves that before they had uttered words (of mockery) they were Muslims, and
that when they uttered them they apostated from Islam, even though they were saying
that it was a joke. This is because the affairs of the Religion are not to be played with, so
Allah had declared them to be disbelievers after their faith. We ask Allah for safety.
3. Turning away from the Religion of Allah, not learning it and not acting by it. And
the evidence is His Statement,
"And who is more oppressive than the one who is reminded with the Verses of
his Lord and then he turns away from them? Verily, We will get retribution from
the criminals." al-Qur'an 32:22
Turning away from the Religion of Allah, not concerning oneself with the Religion, not
learning it, or if he learns he does not act by it, so he turns away from knowledge firstly,
then he turns away from doing anything (related to the Religion). We ask Allah for
safety. Even if he does something while not having any knowledge, then his action
would be lost. So a person must learn first, then act.
- and with respect to these things that nullify one's Islam, there is no difference between
the one who did them in jest, the one who did them intentionally, and the one who did
them out of fear, except for the one who was forced. And all of them are from the most
dangerous affairs and the most common that actually occur. So it is befitting that the
Muslim be warned of them and be afraid of falling into them." Shaykhul Islam
Muhammad ibn Abdil-Wahhab, things that nullify one's Islam, P.ix
It is already clear from the above explanation that if there anything even from the
Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah [ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص] is neglected or mocked or denied then it
nullifies one's Islam. So relatively it is far more clear that if anyone denies, mocks or
neglects Allah's Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) then
there identity of Islam is nullified without any doubt at all. Almost all of the renowned

scholars tirelessly warning the Muslims day and night about those factors [above
mentioned factors]. Additionally, Almost all of the renowned scholars tirelessly warned
the Muslims day and night about the fact of the Beautiful Names and Attributes of
Allah, as they only spoken on that ground based on only from the Qur'an and Sunnah,
if not then all of them they themselves kept quiet and asked others to leave as it is.
Many of the authentic references are variable in this regard when it is the subject of the
Beautiful Names and Attributes of Allah.
One of the concerned matters within the Qur'an and Sunnah in the relatives fields is
that it is also proven from the Qur'an and Sunnah and by the consensus (ijma’) of the
salaf (early generations) of this Ummah that Allah is above His heavens over His
Throne (as befits His Majesty), and that He is the Exalted, Most High. He is above all
things, and there is nothing that is above Him. Allah, Exalted be He, says,
"Allah, it is He Who has created the heavens and the earth, and all that is
between them in six days. Then He rose over (istawa) the Throne (in a manner
that suits His Majesty). You (mankind) have none, besides Him, as a Wali
(protector or helper) or an intercessor. Will you not then remember (or receive
admonition)?” al-Qur'an 32:4
Allah, Exalted be He, says,
"Surely, your Lord is Allah Who created the heavens and the earth in six days
and then rose over (istawa) the Throne (in a manner that suits His Majesty),
disposing the affair of all things.” al-Qur'an 10:3
Allah, Exalted be He, says,
"To Him ascend (all) the goodly words, and the righteous deeds exalt it (i.e. the
goodly words are not accepted by Allah unless and until they are followed by
good deeds).” al-Qur'an 35:10
The Beautiful Names and Attributes of Allah
31
Allah, Exalted be He, says,
"He is the First (nothing is before Him) and the Last (nothing is after Him), the
Most High (nothing is above Him) and the Most Near (nothing is nearer than
Him).” al-Qur'an 57:3
It is also proven from the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah [ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص] as there are many
similar ayat (verses) and ahadeeth (prophetic narrations). But at the same time, Allah,
the Most High, tells us that He is with His slaves wherever they are, as Allah, Exalted be
He, says,
“Have you not seen that Allah knows whatsoever is in the heavens and
whatsoever is on the earth? There is no najwa (secret counsel) of three but He is
their fourth (with His Knowledge, while He Himself is over the Throne, over the
seventh heaven), — nor of five but He is their sixth (with His Knowledge), —
nor of less than that or more but He is with them (with His Knowledge)
wheresoever they may be.” al-Qur'an 58:7
Allah, the Gracious, also says,
“He it is Who created the heavens and the earth in six days and then rose over
(istawa) the Throne (in a manner that suits His Majesty). He knows what goes
into the earth and what comes forth from it, and what descends from the heaven
and what ascends thereto. And He is with you (by His Knowledge) wheresoever
you may be.” al-Qur'an 57:4
Sometimes or most of the times many of us claim that Allah is everywhere based on the
Verse in the Qur'an where that does not mean that He is mixed with (or dwells in) His
creation; rather He is with His slaves by His knowledge. He is above His Throne and
nothing is hidden from Him of what we do. Allah, the Most High, says.
"And We are nearer to him than his jugular vein (by Our Knowledge)." al-
Qur'an 50:16
The Beautiful Names and Attributes of Allah
32
This is the view of Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jama’ah (followers of Prophetic guidance), who
affirm that Allah is above His creation and that He is also with His slaves, and they
state that He is far above dwelling in His created beings. With regard to the denial of all
Divine attributes as voiced by the Jahamiyyah (a deviant sect) and their followers, they
deny that His Essence is above His creatures and that He rose above His Throne, and
they say that He is present in His Essence everywhere. We definitely need to ask Allah
for the protection, forgiveness, and the guidance.
Many of the renowned scholars of Islam have already spoken and warned the Ummah
to not go beyond the limit of regarding the beautiful Names and Attributes of Allah, as
they all have believed and stopped where they should have stopped and warned the
Muslims to not disbelieve or go beyond the Qur'an and Sunnah except what is
mentioned in the Qur'an and Sunnah regarding the matter.
Nu'aym Ibn Hammad al-Khuza'i (d.228H, the Shaykh of al-Bukhari said, "Whoever
resembles (makes tashbih of) Allah to His creation has committed kufr (disbelief) and
whoever denies what Allah has described Himself with has also committed kufr. Indeed,
there is no tashbih at all in that which Allah has described Himself with, or what His
Messenger has described Him with." Related by Imam al-Dhahabi with his isnad in
Mukhtasar al-Uluw (p.184) and al-Albani said that its isnad was Sahih.
It is also advised by the renowned scholars for the Muslims that leave as it is regarding
the Names and Attributes of Allah as they all are true, we have believed and we do not
go beyond the references came to us from the Qur'an and Sunnah. Neither we should
have any question nor should have any doubt in us. Imam al-Awza'i (rahimahullah)
said, "Az-Zuhri (d.124H) and Mak-hul were asked about the ayat regarding the
Attributes of Allah and they replied, 'Leave them as they are.'" Related by al-Harawi in
Dham-ul-Kalam (p.18) and Sharh Usul ul-I'tiqad (3/430) with a hasan isnad.
It is also stated that Al-Walid Ibn Muslim (rahimahullah) said, "Malik (d.179H), al-
Awxa'i, Layth Ibn Sa'ad (d.175H) and Sufyan ath-Thawri (d.167H) (rahimahullah), were
asked about the reports concerning the Attributes [of Allah] and they all replied, 'Leave
them as they are without asking how.'" Related by al-Ajuri (d.360H) in ash-Shari'ah
The Beautiful Names and Attributes of Allah
33
(p.314), al-Bayhaqi in al-Asma was-Sifat (p.453) and also al-I'tiqad (p.118) and the isnad
is hasan.
It is also reported that ash-Shaykh Al-Awza'i (rahimahullah) said, "We would say while
the Tabi'un (the successors of the Companions of the Messenger pbuh) were many,
'Indeed Allah, the Most Perfect, is above His Throne and we have Iman in what is
related in the Sunnah concerning the Attributes [of Allah].'" Related by al-Bayhaqi in
al-Asma was-Sifat (p.408). The isnad is Jayyid al-Hafiz Ibn Hajr said in Fath-ul-Bari
(13/406). Ibn Taymiyah said that its isnad was Sahih in al-Hamawiyah.
Once we have received the references from the Qur'an and Sunnah regarding the
Names and Attributes of Allah then how one can disbelieve or have any doubt in that,
therefore, all of those renowned scholars have agreed upon and warned others that we
should have believe in the fact as the way Allah has described Himself and should leave
as it is.
Sufyan Ibn 'Uyaynah (d.198H) (rahimahullah) said, "Everything that Allah described
Himself in His Book, then its recitation is its explanation without asking how or
resembling." Related by al-Lalika'i in Sharh Usul Ahl-is-Sunnah (p.736) and ad-
Daraqutni in as-Sifat (p.61). Its chain is Sahih as Ibn Hajr stated in Fath-ul-Bari
(13/501).
And we should not to go beyond the limit to find out more regarding this matter other
than the sources itself is the Qur'an and authentic Sunnah [Prophetic Tradition], as that
may lead one to fall into the act of kufr and innovation. As Imam Malik (rahimahullah)
was asked about [how Allah made] al-Istiwa to which he replied, "Al-Istiwa is known
and how is unknown. To have faith in it is obligatory and to question [how] is an
innovation." Then he said to the questioner, "I do not think except that you are an evil
man!" So he ordered him to be expelled." Related by al-Bayhaqi in al-Asam was-sifat
(p.516) with the wording: "Al-Istiwa is not unknown. To have Iman in it is obligatory
and to question it is an innovation." Al-Albani said that the narration was established in
The Beautiful Names and Attributes of Allah
34
Mukhtasar al-Uluw (p.141). Al-Bayhaqi also relates (p.516), as does ad-Darimi in ar-
Radd alal-Jahmiyah (p.55) - with a Jayyid isnad, as Ibn Hajr says in Fath-ul-Baaree
(13/406) - that Imam Malik said, "Ar-Rahman [Allah] ascended as He Himself descried,
and it is not to be asked 'How'? as how is unknown."
It is stated by the Prominent scholar Abdullah Ibn al-Mubarak (rahimahullah) that, "We
know that our Lord, the Most Perfect, is above the heavens, above His 'Arsh (Throne),
separate from His creation." Reported by Imam Abdullah bin Ahmad in his book as-
Sunnah (no.22), ad-Darimi in Ar-Radd 'alal-Jahmiyah (no.23), and al-Bukhari in Khalq
Af al-ul-Ibad.
Other than them, Shaykhul Islam Ibn Taymiyah said, "Muhammad ibn al-Hasan learnt
from Abu Hanifa (d.150H), Malik, and [other] scholars of their level. He related a
consensus (ijma) and informed that the Jahmiyah continuously, or preponderantly
describe [Allah] with matters of negativity. As for this saying: 'without explanation',
then what is intended by this is the explanation of the Jahmiyah; those who innovated
an explanation concerning the Attributes, which was in opposition to that which the
Companions and their followers were firmly established upon." Majmu'ah al-Fatawa
(5/50)
As we have already stated that all of the renowned scholars have agreed upon and
believed in the Names and Attributes of Allah, and there is not a single one who carry
any doubt in that and they as believed and advises others to believe and not to explain
anything other than what is Allah has revealed to us in the Qur'an and Sunnah.
As Imam Muhammad Ibn al-Hasan ash-Shaybani (d.189H) (rahimahullah) said, "The
scholars from the east and the west are all united upon having faith in the Qur'an and
in the ahadith that are related by the precise, reliable narrators (thiqat) from Allah's
Messenger [ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص], concerning Allah's Attributes, without explanation or resemblance.
Whoever explains anything from them this day, has left that which the Prophet
The Beautiful Names and Attributes of Allah
35
was upon and has split from the Jama'ah. For they neither described nor [ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص]
explained, but rather they gave verdicts with what was in the Book and the Sunnah,
then remained silent. Whoever speaks with the view of Jahm [Ibn Safwan] has split
from the Jama'ah, because he described Him with attributes that are nothing." Related
by al-Lalika'i in Sharh Usul Ahl-is-Sunnah (p.740). Ibn Taymiyah said in Majmu'ah al-
Fatawa (4/4), "It is confirmed from Muhammad Ibn al-Hasan - the Companion of Abu
Hanifa - that he said: [as above]."
It is also stated that ash-Shaykh Abu Ja'far at-Tirmidhi, when asked as to how Allah
keeps His Attribute of being above the creation if He Descends to the Lowest Heaven in
the last third of the night, replied, "The Nazul (Descends of Allah) is understood, but
the how/nature is unknown, and faith in it is obligatory, and to question about [how] it
is an innovation (bid'ah)." Mukhtasar al-Uluw (p.231). Al-Albani declared the chain
Sahih. Abu Ja'far was from the greatest scholars of his day.
additionally, it is stated by Prominent scholar, the Shaykh of Imam Malik, Rabi'ah Ibn
Abi Abdir-Rahman (rahimahullah) said, "Al-Istiwa (Allah's Descending) is not
unknown, and how is incomprehensible. From Allah is the Message, upon the
Messenger is to clear convey it, and upon us is to affirm it." Al-Asma was-Sifat
(pg.516). Ibn Taymiyah said in al-Hamawiyah (pg.80), "Al-Khallal narrated it with an
isnad consisting of trustworthy and precise narrators." Al-Albani said that the isnad was
Sahih in Mukhtasar al-Uluw (pg.132).
Imam ash-Shafi'i (rahimahullah) also warned others to not disbelieve in the Names and
Attributes of Allah and not search anything which may contradicts Qur'an and Sunnah
and as a result one become kafir (non-believer). As he said, "To Allah belong Names
and Attributes that occur in His Book and that His Prophet related to the nation. It is
not possible for anyone to refute (radd) them. So the one who contradicts this after the
evidence has been established against him then he is a kafir (non-Believer), and as for
before the establishment of the proof then he is excused due to ignorance, because the

knowledge of that cannot be attained through the intellect. So we affirm these Attributes
and we negate tashbih (likening Allah to creation) as Allah negated it by saying, 'there
is nothing like Him.'" Siyar A'lam an-Nubala (10/80). Adh-Dhahabi says, "Reported
by al-Hakkari and others with a chain of narrators containing trustworthy narrators as
in Mukhtasar al-Uluw (p.177). He also said, "I say: the censure of Kalam (theological
rhetoric) and its people is common from ash-Shafi'i, and he was very stringent in
following the narrations in the usul (foundations) and the furu' (branches)."
Moreover, Imam ash-Shafi'i (rahimahullah) also said that, The belief that I am upon,
and I saw our Companions, the As-hab-ul Hadith - like Malik and Sufyan and others -
to be upon is: affirming the testimony that none has the right to be worshipped except
Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. And that Allah is Over His
Throne, above His Heaven (ala 'Arshihi fi Sama'ihi), He comes close to His Creation
howsoever He Wills, and He Descends to the lowest heaven howsoever He Wills."
Awn al-Ma'bud (13/41), and Ibn Abu Ya'la reports it in Tabaqat al-Hanabila (1/283)
with a chain of narration linked back to ash-Shafi'i.
We are also warned not to try resembles Allah's Attributes with the creation through
our mere imagination as we are mere a creation of the Creator and we have not been
give the capacity of thinking in that way and neither we have any similar references
from Qur'an and Sunnah that we can resemble His, Exalted be He, Attributes except
the explanation revealed to us by the Messenger of Allah [ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص].
Ash-Shaykh Is-hq bin Rahawayah (rahimahullah) said, "Indeed Allah has described
Himself in His Book with Attributes from which the creation is left in no need to
describe Him with, other than what He described Himself with. From among them,
'Allah will Come to then in the shade of clouds' and His saying, 'And you see the angels
around the Throne, hymning the praises of their Lord." Al-Arba'in fi Sifatillah

It is also stated by the Prominent scholar Imam Ahmad Ibn Hanbal (rahimahullah) that,
about the hadith of Allah's Descending (Nuzul), "We have faith in it and we affirm it,
without asking how, without explaining it, nor do we reject anything from it." Related
by Ibn al-Jawzi in Manaqib-ul-Imam Ahmad (p.156). Ibn Qudamah in Lum'atul-I'tiqad
(no.3) and Ibn al-Qayyim in as-Sawa'iqul-Munazzilah (1/265).
Similar statement given by the Prominent scholar Nu'aym Ibn Hammad, the Shaykh of
Al-Bukhari, said, "Whoever resembles Allah to His creation has committed kufr
(unbelief). Whoever denies what Allah has described Himself with has [also] committed
unbelief. Whatever He has described Himself with, or His Messenger [described Him
with], then there is no tashbih (resemblance) in it." Related by al-Lalika'i in Sharh
Usul Ahl-is-Sunnah (no.936). Its chain of narration is Sahih chain, as Shaykh al-Albani
stated in Mukhtasar al-Uluw (p.184).
Ali ibn abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Address people with what their
minds can comprehend; will you be pleased if Allah and His Messenger [ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص] are
belied?" al-Bukhari
The number of Muslims preachers who were known for story telling increased during
the Caliphate of Ali ibn Abi Talib, the Commander of the Believers (may Allah be
pleased with him). Therefore, he addressed those preachers advising them not to address
common people except with what their minds can comprehend. It is sufficient for them
to be acquainted with the pillars of religion that benefit them, such as the Islamic Creed
of monotheism, what is lawful and what is prohibited. Moreover, Ali (may Allah be
pleased with him) counselled those Muslims preachers not to talk with the common
people about unclear or puzzling matters that may cause people to reject the truth out of
their inability of comprehend.
Relatively, Ibn Tawus narrated in the authority of his father that Ibn 'Abbas saw a man
shivering in disapproval. When he heard a hadith about the Sublime Attributes of Allah.
Thereupon, Abbas said, "Why do these people fear such issues? They accept what is

precise (in meaning) and deviate from what is unspecific (and consequently they may
reject or misinterpret it)." related by Abdur-Razzaq
It is also reported that Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) criticized some
common people, who used to attend his didactic sessions, He criticized them for the fear
they used to show upon hearing any hadith about Allah's Sublime Attributes due to
their disapproval of them. This reaction indicates that their faith was incomplete as they
did not believe in all that was authentically enunciated by the Prophet [ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص], whether
it was intelligible to them or not. Thus, those people renounce the religious obligation
of believing in the Qur'anic Verses whose meaning is unknown to them, though it is
known that the whole Qur'an is an unquestionable truth. Moreover, some of those
people interpret the Qur'anic Verses with a meaning that is not intended by Allah, so
they perish by committing such a grave sin." ash-Shaykh Dr. Salih al-Fawzan, Concise
Commentary on the Book of Tawhid, P.315-319
I end with the statement that I love by heart of the Prominent scholar ash-Shaykh al-
Albaani (may Allah have mercy on him), as he said:
"If even it is a single reference but sufficient for the true seekers; but for the
ignorant people thousands of the references shall bring no benefit. We can teach
the one who would like to learn but for the ignorant we don't have anything to
do."

The Messenger of Allah [ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص] said in his last sermon on 9th day of Dhul al-Hijjah,
10 A.H. in the 'Valley of Mount Arafat,
"All those who listen to me shall pass on my words to others and those to
others again; and may the last ones understand my words better than
those who listen to me directly. Be my witness O God, that I have
conveyed your message to your people."
And He [ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص] also said:
"May Allah make radiant [the face of] one who heard what 'I said, learned
it by heart, and transmitted it as he heard it." at-Tirmidhi
"Glorified be your Lord, the Lord of Honour and Power! (He is free) from
what they attribute unto Him! And peace be on the Messengers! And all
the praise and thanks be to Allah, Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns
and all that exists)." Al-Qur'an 37:180-182

Conclusion
I pray to the All-Mighty, Exalted be He, bless this small work and forgive me for falling
short of my lofty goal. And I pray to the All-Mighty, All-Wise, that He bless the
Prophet, his family, and his righteous Companions. May the All-Mighty, Exalted be He,
grant us a place under the Prophet's standard on the Day of Resurrection.
May He, the Exalted be glorified and praised. There is no way for us to count the
praises He deserves, I praise Him as much as He deserves, He is as He has praised His
Own Self.
I ask Allah, the Exalted, to make us from among those who see the truth as truth, and
follow it, and from those who see falsehood as falsehood and avoid it. May He make us
those who guide the people while we ourselves are upon guidance. May He make us
righteous people that spread righteousness. May he not allow our hearts to stray after
He has guided us, and may He bestow upon us some Mercy from Himself, verily He is
al-Wahhaab.
And all praise is for Allah, the One Who, by way of Him, all good things are completed.
And may His Salaah and Salaam be upon the Prophet of Mercy, this nations's guide to
the Path of al-'Azeez, al-Hameed, by the permission of His Lord. And (may His Salaah
and Salaam also be) upon his family and Companions, and upon all those who follow
them until the Day of Recompense.
"....Our Lord! Accept (this service) from us. Verily! You are the All-Hearer, the
All-Knower." Al-Qur'an 2:127
"My Lord! Inspire and bestow upon me the power and ability that I may be
grateful for Your Favours which You have bestowed on me and on my parents,
and that I may do righteous good deeds that will please You, and admit me by
Your Mercy among Your righteous slaves." Al-Qur'an 27:19
