OUR JUDGES

Dogs - Mrs Lynn Dumbrell (Bethlyntee)Little did I know back in 1985 that going to buy a puppy would have such an effect on my life. Beth (Sunbree Such Delight) was bought to work the cattle on our farm and it was through her that I became so involved with this wonderful breed. Showing was never ‘on the cards’ but I was persuaded to enter the show ring with her and as they say “the rest is history”. I would not have missed one moment spent working my dogs, nor showing them, where the majority gained their Stud Book numbers. In the latter years I bred my first champion. Meg (Ch Bethlyntee Summer Breeze) who, when not going to shows, worked the cattle every day. Baxter (Ch Bethlyntee Bannock ShCM) gained a number of Reserve Challenge Certificates, together with his Show Certificate of Merit whilst owned and shown by Jenner Lindsay. When he returned to Honeybridge, but now in the joint ownership of Jenner’s son William and myself, he went on to gain his title.

I have been privileged to share my life with a total of 12 Beardies. The household is now home to two boys and a girl. My Beardies have all been individuals, but have shared the correct temperament, allowing them to live together in harmony in our home. I have served on the committee of SCBCC and been the Breed Note Writer for Our Dogs. I awarded my first tickets in 2004 and have since judged the breed at both breed club and general championship shows in this country, as well as in Europe, Australia and the USA.

It is always an honour to judge at a breed club show, so I would like to thank the members of the BCC for this opportunity.

Bitches - Miss K. Farrier (Kayanarra)I have been owned by Beardies since 1994. I started doing obedience and agility, before dabbling in the show ring. It took just one win under a breed judge at North East Working Breeds in 1994 to get me hooked on showing! I have enjoyed judging Beardies since 2000.

Circumstances have dictated that I could never own a lot of dogs, they are part of my family. From the Beardies I have owned, I've been lucky enough to have some good successes. I have been fortunate enough to campaign two Beardies to become Champions, winning 12 CCs and numerous RCCs between them. Kira, Ch Bushblades Tranquil Skies at Kayanarra JW ShCM, and her son Ch Bushblades Transaction JW ShCM. I have also won a RCC with Kira's only daughter, Jaycee, Bushblades Seaquil for Kayanarra and others campaigned to gain their stud book numbers.

I believe we never "know it all", we continue to learn about conformation and movement.

I feel very honoured to have been voted by the membership to judge Bitches at the Bearded Collie Club championship show and I am looking forward to it immensely.

Referee - Mrs Yvonne Fox (Bushblades)We got our first Beardie in 1988 and began showing the following year - quite by accident, it has to be said! Since then we've bred 5 UK champions and other CC and RCC winners but first and foremost our dogs are our pets and beloved members of our family. I first awarded CC's in 2008 and have also judged overseas in Sweden, Germany and the USA. I have thoroughly enjoyed all of my judging appointments and am looking forward to my day at the BCC Ch show, the running of which I have been involved in over many years in my past life of BCC Secretary and Show Secretary! This year it will be nice to be able to sit back from all that and just enjoy the day - and I hope win or lose all the exhibitors will do the same!

BEARDED COLLIE DNA DATABANKTAKE A POSITIVE STEP TO HELP SAFEGUARD

THE FUTURE HEALTH OF OUR BREED

One of the most important legacies we can leave for our breed is a DNA Databank and the Joint Breed Liaison Committee has made arrangements with the Animal Health Trust to collect and archive the DNA from KC Breed registered Bearded Collies.A DNA Databank is a collection of DNA samples from different Bearded Collies that can be stored for an indefinite period of time with a view to using it in the future for research purposes, e.g. investigating the causes of inherited diseases, studies into genetic diversity or the frequency of a genetic mutation in the general Bearded Collie population, such as was carried out in the recent CEA study. We are interested in storing DNA from any Bearded Collie but especially those which have, or will be, used for breeding purposes. We also want to store DNA from those dogs that are known to be affected by, or be closely related to, dogs affected with inherited conditions.DNA can be collected by means of a cheek swab - the cost of the swab, extracting the DNA and storing it is only £5.00 per dog. BCC Rescue and Welfare are pleased to be offering owners the facility to provide samples of Beardies DNA at our Championship Show at the subsidised cost of £2.50 per kit.You can have your dog swabbed at the show - in which case you will need to bring details of your dog, including KC registration number, microchip/tattoo no. if known and details of any possible inherited health conditions, together with copies of any relevant information regarding them i.e. hip score certificates, eye exam certificates, dates of diagnosis and copies of any key notes from the clinical history. OR you can collect a swab kit, do the procedure at home and send your samples and information to the AHT in the envelope provided.Whichever you wish to do please order the number of kits you require on the entry form.Remember it is important that you update the health information on your dog so that any changes in clinical status can be recorded. The AHT also want to know if your dog lived a long healthy life too! Both owner and dog information is kept in the strictest confidence, although from time to time a list of the names of dogs whose DNA is stored may be released to Breed Club representatives. No information other than the name is released.Swabs and submission forms are also available from the Animal Health Trust, email – [email protected] (also the email address for updating the health information on your dog).

To encourage owners to submit samples to the DNA Databank, the BCC is subsidising the cost of the swabs so they are

HALF PRICE if ordered with your entry.

18. Dogs in Vehicles on Hot Days. Your dog is vulnerable and at risk during hot weather and the Kennel Club offers the following guidance to help guide you through the do’s and don’ts travelling to and whilst at KC licensed events.• When travelling to a show please take a moment to consider whether the route to the show is on a busy

holiday route, and leave earlier to avoid increased time in traffic jams.• If your vehicle is not air-conditioned seriously consider whether travelling to the show is a good idea at

all.• The vehicle should be as fully ventilated as possible, and plenty of stops should be taken, with lots of

water available to drink.• Ensure your dog is not sitting in full sunlight. There should be plenty of free flowing air around the dog.• When at the show, never leave your dog in the vehicle.• Keep the dog in the shade - take your own shade for example a large umbrella and always have plenty

of water available to drink so your dog stays well hydrated.• Avoid your dog taking part in unnecessary exertion, or from standing in exposed sunlight for extended

lengths of time. Remember, if you feel hot your dog is very likely to feel much hotter and dehydrated, and this could lead to

dire results. Please look after your dog’s welfare. WARNING: IF YOUR DOG IS FOUND TO BE AT RISK FORCIBLE ENTRY TO YOUR VEHICLE MAY BE NECESSARY WITHOUT LIABILITY FOR ANY DAMAGE CAUSED. Anyone whose dog is entered at a Kennel Club licensed event should take all reasonable steps to ensure the needs of their dog(s) are met, and should not put a dog’s health and welfare at risk by any action, default, omission or otherwise. Breach of Kennel Club Regulations in this respect may be referred to the General Committee for disciplinary action under Kennel Club Rules and Regulations. Exhibitors/Competitors are reminded that show societies have the right under Kennel Club Regulation to refuse any entry.

19. Not for Competition entries will be accepted. Details of each dog so entered must be recorded on the entry form and must be Kennel Club registered.

20. No modifications will be made to the schedule except by permission of the General Committee of the Kennel Club, which will be followed by advertisement in the Canine press wherever possible.

21. If acknowledgement of receipt of postal entries is required a SAE should be enclosed. 22. All postal entries must be made on or before the closing date of entries (Postmark) upon the entry forms

enclosed for that purpose. All postal entry forms must be accompanied by the appropriate entry fees of the entry will not be accepted.

23. Should a Judge be prevented from fulfilling their engagement the committee reserve to themselves the right of appointing another judge to fulfill their duties. Exhibitors are at liberty to withdraw from competition but no entry fees can be returned.

24. No animal other than an exhibit shall be brought into the precincts of a dog show during its continuance except any dogs registered to assist the disabled or dogs required for educational or instructional purposes or by permission of the committee. However, at the discretion of the show society, a dog brought to the show by a spectator may be admitted into the precincts of the show, with the proviso that those in charge of the dog sign a declaration confirming the dog is free from disease and that the dog will be kept under proper control at all times.

25. Exhibitors showing dogs are not permitted to hold any conversation with the judge during the competition, and any exhibitor who persists in addressing the judge after being requested not to do so by the ring steward, the judge or any member of the committee may be disqualified and reported to the Kennel Club, and any prize awarded to his or her dogs may be forfeited. No person other than the exhibitor (officials excepted) will be allowed in the ring during judging.

26. If in the opinion of the Show Secretary, Show Manager or Judge any dog is considered not in a fit state for exhibition owing to disease, savage disposition or any other cause, the dog may be excluded or removed from the show on the instruction of the show management. Once excluded or removed from the show the dog must not be brought into the show at any time under any circumstances and the case must be reported to the Kennel Club within seven days.

27. The committee will be most anxious for the care and safety of dogs brought for exhibition, but it must be clearly understood that the committee will not be responsible for the entire or partial loss or detention of or damage to a dog or dogs, or any other property whether arising from accident or any other cause whatsoever not for any act or omission of themselves, their officers, agents, servants or others, and it is on this understanding only that entries are accepted.

28. The Officers and Committee of the show accept no responsibility for products advertised or sold by the standholders at the show and remind exhibitors that grooming products on sale may not meet the requirements of the Regulation for Preparation of Dogs for Exhibition.

29. Any owner, competitor, handler or other person in charge of a dog is required to remove as soon as possible any fouling caused by their dog(s) at any Kennel Club licensed show within the licensed venue and within the environs of that event including car and caravan parks and approaches.

30. The owner, exhibitor, handler or other person in charge of a dog at Kennel Club licensed events must at all times ensure that the dog is kept under proper control whilst at the licensed venue, including its environs, car and caravan parks and approaches.
