Objectives:Describe adult learning process.Discuss the characteristics of adult learners.Discuss the different learning stylesDevelop an instructional design3/21/20142Apollo Bramwell Nursing School, Inc.I want to talk aboutlearning.Butnotthe lifeless, sterile, futile, quickly forgotten stuff that is crammed in to the mind of the poor helpless individual tied into his seat by ironclad bonds of conformity! I am talking about LEARNING -the insatiable curiosity that drives the adolescent boy to absorb everything he can see or hear or read about gasoline engines in order to improve the efficiency and speed of his cruiser. I am talking about the student who says, I am discovering, drawing in from the outside, and making that which is drawn in a real part ofme. I am talking about any learning in which the experience of the learner progresses along this line: No, no, thats not what I want; Wait! This is closer to what I am interested in, what I need; Ah, here it is! Now Im grasping and comprehending what Ineedand what I want to know!Carl Rogers 1983: 18-193/21/2014Apollo Bramwell Nursing School, Inc.3What is an adult? What is learning? What is adult learning?3/21/2014Apollo Bramwell Nursing School, Inc.4How do you learn?

Adult Learning- is a process of self-directed inquiry (Knowles, 1984)- it fosters cooperative learning climate.- there is mutual trust and clarifications with the learners

3/21/2014Apollo Bramwell Nursing School, Inc.9Carl Rogers Principles of learning:Human beings have a natural potentiality for learning.Significant learning takes place when the subject matter is perceived by the student as having relevance for his own purposes.Learning which involves a change in self organization in the perception of oneself is threatening and tends to be resisted. Those learnings which are threatening to the self are more easily perceived and assimilated when external threats are at a minimum.

3/21/2014Apollo Bramwell Nursing School, Inc.10Cont..When treat to the self is low, experience can be perceived in differentiated fashion, and learning can proceedMuch significant learning is acquired by doing.Learning is facilitated when the student participates responsibly in the learning processSelf-initiated learning which involves the whole person of the learner-feelings as well as intellect-is the most lasting and pervasive Independence, creativity and self-reliance are all facilitated when self criticism and self evaluation are basic and evaluation by others is ofsecondary importance.3/21/2014Apollo Bramwell Nursing School, Inc.11Cont...The most socially useful learning in the modern world is the learning of the process of learning, a continuous openness to experience and incorporation into oneself of the process of change
