GREASE WOW!!! What a brilliant show. Those who attended the St Pius X production of Grease in Week 9 of last term were certainly treated to an amazing evening of top class entertainment. People were still buzzing with excitement days after the show. We have such wonderful talent here at St Pius. Congratulations & thank you to our very talented Drama and Music Teachers, Ms Bartley, Mrs Lunarzewski and Mrs Elgar-Roberts, for creating and producing such a wonderful show. Special thanks must go to Tom Rodgers, our School Captain, who choreographed all of the dances and assisted greatly with the direction of the show. Congratulations to all of our actors, dancers, musicians, vocalists and back-stage crew for this very professional production. Thank you to everyone who assisted to make the evening a fantastic experience. Without a doubt, this show is the best school production I have ever seen. Preparation Is Crucial You probably know the story of the race to the South Pole between Scott of England and Amundsen of Norway. History tells us that Scott arrived at the Pole one month after Amundsen. Scott died, along with his entire team, on the way home. The main reason was lack of appropriate preparation. Scott’s team used unsuitable pack-animals (ponies instead of dogs), took inadequate and inappropriate supplies (eg French olives and raspberry jam), had inadequate gloves and chose to walk and pull their own sledges rather than ski. Amundsen by contrast learned survival skills from the peoples who lived in the arctic before setting out. Scott’s example teaches an important lesson: if you wish to succeed, realistic preparation is essential. While the upcoming Yearly Examinations will not be as harrowing as Antarctic exploration, nevertheless the same lesson applies. Doing your best in your exams is very important and you can only do your best if you are thoroughly prepared. All students should be starting to study for their exams around this time. This allows students to prepare thoroughly, in a calm and well-organized fashion. Year 10 exams will be held in Weeks 4-5; Years 7 and 8 in Weeks 5-6; and Year 9 in Weeks 6 and 7. Parents and Carers, please encourage your sons and daughters to prepare well for their coming exams.

Making a Splash for National Water Week It’s National Water Week and this provides a great opportunity to remind ourselves and teach others that water must be used wisely if there is to be enough to meet the needs of future generations. Our school is working with Watersave to monitor and manage water usage. Using the Watersave SUMS™ portal allows us to observe our school’s water consumption at any time. The portal provides an up to the minute graphical representation of water usage. If unusual water usage occurs in the middle of the night, on the weekend, or during holidays (when no one is at school) - we are notified immediately. This means we can identify and rectify a potential problem quickly. The aim of this program is to save water and reduce our bills. Positions Vacant So far for 2017 we have five positions for which we must interview. Full-time permanent positions vacant: PDHPE/Religious Studies and Design & Technology. Part-time permanent positions available: 0.8 LOTE (Italian/French/Japanese). Part-time temporary positions vacant: 0.2 Science and 0.3 Drama/English. Busy times ahead for those involved in the shortlisting and interview panels. HSC Commences The 2016 HSC commences this week. I ask all members of our community to pray for the students sitting these exams. It can be a stressful time not only for the students but also for the families of those students. NSW SCHOOL VACCINATION PROGRAM 2016 Our final Vaccination Clinic here at St Pius X High School is Thursday 20 October – Dose 3 HPV (Gardasil) to all Year 7 students. WHAT IF MY CHILD HAS MISSED A VACCINE? If your child has missed any vaccinations they will be offered any missed doses at the next clinic at their school. WHAT IF MY CHILD HAS NOT RECEIVED ALL HPV VACCINES BEFORE THE END OF 2016? Any year 7 student with missed doses of HPV vaccine can be caught up in 2017. Additionally – any Year 8 student who commenced HPV vaccination while in Year 7 and are yet to finish all 3 doses of HPV (and who has not received any from their local doctor) can still receive these at the next clinic at their school. Don’t forget a Record of Vaccination is given to each student for each vaccination. Parents/guardians should ensure that this record is kept for future reference and should not assume that their child has been vaccinated if they do not receive this Record of Vaccination. Year 9 Food Technology The Year 9 Food Technology classes cooked nourishing vegetable soup last term, as part of the Food Equity unit. Vegetables for the soup were donated by our students and staff. OzHarvest then collected it to distribute it to charities in need across Newcastle.

Jerseys – Year 10 2017 Notes were handed out (and placed on Skoolbag) in the last week of Term 3 regarding jerseys for next year’s Year 10 students. Orders are going in early this Term to ensure delivery in Term 1 2017, thus maximising wear of jerseys for Year 10 students. Details are on the note, but basically students need to attend fittings at the Uniform shop (Alinta) during one of the extended times available in Week 1 Term 4 and payment and notes need to be made to the Uniform shop by Monday 17 October. While printing off assessments may be necessary occasionally, it is hoped that most families would make provision for students to print them at home. A Country Superstar in the making – our very own Liliana Crane heads to Nashville On Saturday 10 September, Year 9 SPX student Liliana Crane competed in the Brisbane Doomben Country Music Race Day Finals for rising talent, hosted by companies Rural Aid and Buy a Bale. The judges included Tania Kernigan, an Australian country music singer and sister of Lee Kernaghan and O’Shea, an Australian Country Music duo who live in Nashville. They are also ambassadors for Rural Aid. Liliana sang ‘Jolene’ (a well-known favourite by Dolly Parton) and accompanied herself on acoustic guitar. Liliana started learning the guitar at age 9 and hasn’t looked back since. This year she completed her AMEB Grade 3 Examination and received a High Distinction. There is no doubt that Liliana is an extremely talented singer/song-writer and performer. Liliana won 1st prize of two return tickets and a week’s accommodation in Nashville, where she will visit the Grand Ole Opry, Country Music Hall of Fame and the American Country Music Association (ACMA) just to name a few country music destinations. Liliana also plans on busking in Nashville and playing a gig in a café, a life-long dream of hers. Liliana will be accompanied by her extremely proud and supportive parents. They plan to go Term 1, 2017. The CEO of Rural Aid is currently trying to organise O’Shea, the Australian Music country duo and Liliana to be in Nashville

at the same time where they can play a few gigs together. Liliana’s first major influence of country music is Taylor Swift. At the end of last year Liliana, along with three other SPX students; Keely Hemson, Lauren Austin and Jasmine Brown went to Taylor’s concert dressed up as Taylor Swift perfume bottles. It was at that concert where they got the opportunity to meet their idol, Taylor Swift in person. Liliana has been involved in the ASPIRE program for three years and has also been having guitar lessons with Jim McIntyre at SPX for the past two years. Liliana said that Jim has been a major influence with teaching her how to write her own music. Anyone that knows Liliana will be quick to say that she is the most grounded, down to earth and humble girl who really is a star in the making. On behalf of the Music Department, Creative Arts Faculty and the wider school community, we congratulate Liliana on this ever so exciting and truly amazing opportunity. We can’t wait to see what she does in her future and we’ll be sure to get her autograph. ‘Grease was the Word’ in the Factory Grease is the word that some of us here at St Pius have been singing in our sleep for a good part of this year. As co-director of the show, I found it to be an all-consuming project that was worth it come show-time. To see such a large number of students pull together as a formidable team and deliver such a professional display of musical theatre was an absolute joy. I commend them for their commitment and the endless lunch time rehearsals they consistently attended.

I know all of these students are incredibly grateful to Tahnee Elgar-Roberts and Asha Lunarzewski (our Music teachers) for their overseeing and shaping of the music – it’s the music that is at the heart of Grease and has made it one of the best loved musicals in recent history. Thank you also to Caroline Daniel’s contribution as a rehearsal assistant – her Drama teacher expertise was a valuable resource for our acting cast. There are always a number of people who generously contribute their time and expertise to projects like these and they do so without any payment or expected recognition. Without this generosity of spirit, it is not possible for a school community to achieve a successful school musical. The following staff, parents, students and business owners deserve a special mention: Rachael Moore, Daniel Brennan, Jordan Fardell, Felicity Doyle, Helen O’Donohue, Kevin Flegg, Heath Baldwin, Elijah Mills, Rosemari Rossi (Adrianna’s mum); as well as the number of staff who helped backstage, on the ticket desk and in the canteen. A special thank you also needs to go to Hunter Coast Homes who gave the school some plywood to assist with the set, and to Cavalier Printing who printed high quality programs free of charge. All funds raised from selling these programs will go to Caritas - $603!

Sincere thanks also goes to our Creative Arts Coordinator, Gabriella Smith, and to the School Executive for their behind the scenes support – this support has been generous and consistent over a period of months. Without this, something like Grease cannot even get off the ground.

Thank you to all the teaching staff who graciously put up with disruptions to classes and assessment tasks. And to all of the parents who attended to the majority of the show's costume requirements, as well as just generally supporting rehearsal times.

Finally, I’d like to commend the other director of the show – Tom Rodgers, our School Captain. Not only did he co-star in the production as Danny, he choreographed all of the dances, and shared the role of director. I have been teaching for many years and have never seen anything like it! At the beginning of the year he was keen to be a leader of the project behind the scenes and he had such a detailed vision that he wanted to share with the teachers. At first we teachers quietly wondered amongst ourselves, “gee is this kid a bit of a control freak”, as he methodically pointed out where we might have overlooked something in the early planning stages (funnily enough, he was always right). However, it only took a few more weeks before we were elated that he was on board - it had become clear that our workloads were going to be a lot less due to the power of this student’s work ethic. Over the following months, he didn’t disappoint – congratulations Tom – more than anyone else, the achievements of the show are a credit to you! NSWCCC Soccer After a very early start, and leaving St Pius at 6.15am, we travelled to Sydney to play in the semi-final of the NSW Junior Boys Catholic Cup. Unfortunately, the team was missing three of our players due to sickness and injury. However, this would give others the opportunity to step up and make their mark. Our opponents were Marist College from Kogarah, as were the two other semi-finalists. The game kicked off with a hectic pace – both teams trying to gain the initiative. Chances were few and far between in the first half, with both goalkeepers having only long range efforts to deal with. The Marist College strikers were lively and really made the St Pius defence of Kyle Theacos, Luca Crook, Steven Theacos and Joshua Davis work hard to shut them down. St Pius were quite pleased to hear the half-time whistle, as Marist College started to get on top in the final 10 minutes of the first half but the score was 0-0, so all to play for in the second half.

Second half began, and from the first minute the St Pius boys were on the front foot, winning all the 50/50 tackles and surging forward. The midfield, led by Danilo O’Brien with Bailey Wells, Joseph Licata and Jock Dockrill, started to cause many problems for the Marist College defence and from a corner, Danilo O’Brien outjumped the defender and thudded a header against the Marist College bar, only to see the ball stay out of the net. A few minutes later, a superb pass from Danilo O’Brien put Samuel Marr clear in the Marist College penalty area, again the bar came to the rescue of Marist College and the ball rebounded to safety. To the credit of the St Pius team, these two near misses only seemed to spur them on and with a couple of minutes left, great skill by Danilo O’Brien on the edge of the box gave him just enough room to get a strike on target, only to once again see the ball cruelly hit the left hand post and bounce to safety.

Even though St Pius dominated the second half, only a wonderful save from Lewis Rooney prevented Marist College from scoring. The whistle blew and 0-0 was the score at full time, so now the game went to Golden Goal or 10 minutes each way, until a goal was scored. The game started exactly like the previous 30 minutes with St Pius completely dominating the flow of the play. Kurtikila Suleiman and Jayden Wright were causing all sorts of problems for the Marist College defence with their direct running, and only last ditch tackles and bad luck stopped St Pius from scoring. In the final minute of the first half of extra time a ball was cleared by the Marist College defence to the half way line and their lone striker got the run of the ball and spectacularly hit a 35 metre shot that deceived Lewis Rooney and floated agonisingly over his hands and into the net.

The St Pius boys fell to the ground in disbelief and were devastated as they had given their all and didn’t deserve to be on the losing team. Congratulations to Marist College Kogarah, as they won the final the very next day.

The school should be extremely proud of the boys who represented St Pius X in the NSWCCC, as to be one of the final four schools in NSW is a huge achievement. The other three teams were all from Sydney.

The boys will never play as good in a semi-final again and lose, and that is what I told them in the change room after the game. Mr Lee and I could not have been more proud of the effort that the boys showed and will remember this for a very long time.

Hunter Valley Grammar School Interschool’s Orla Sheridan placed 6th in the 65cm Show Jumping and placed 6th in the 1.2 dressage test and had a nice test in the 1.3. Sophie Casey placed 2nd in the 65cm Show Jumping and placed 3rd in the 1.2 dressage test. Hannah Lovell placed 3rd in the 1.3 dressage test and had a nice Show Jumping round in the 80cm and in the 95cms she placed 5th.

Please supply your child with a note/send an email explaining who they will be leaving with and at what time they will be collected.

Second-Hand Uniforms

A large number of parents/carers have expressed the need to have second-hand uniforms available. St Pius X High School runs a service which enables all parents to buy/sell second-hand uniform items. The service works in the following way: 1. Parents/carers fill out a form with the details of the item/s required to buy/sell and

supply a contact number. This form will be available from reception, or alternatively you may email your details to: admin@adamstownsp.catholic.edu.au.

2. These details are then advertised in a special “Second-Hand Uniform” section of each Newsletter (back page).

3. The advertisement will run for one month or two editions of the newsletter. 4. Parents/carers will simply contact the number supplied and deal directly with the

person buying/selling. Please note that no second-hand uniform items will be kept by St Pius X High School.
