EDITORIAL
Hi Everyone. Over a quarter of the year gone already, it doesn’t seem 5 minutes since we were wearing paper hats and eating mince
pies! For Christmas I received a lovely wall plaque from 2 of my
granddaughters and the verse is so lovely, I would like to share it
with you. It says
“Hold me a little longer, Rock me a little more. Tell me another story... You’ve only told me four. Let me sleep on your shoulder, I love your happy smile, I will
always love you GRANDMA, So stay with me a while.”
Thanks again for all your contributions—I really do appreciate them. You are helping to make our magazine one of the best! Many of you send reports on rallies
to Facebook. Why not send them to me too so all Centre members can see them.
As it is now only a year until the Centre’s 40th Birthday, I thought I might put a
few things in the About from previous Abouts over the years starting with the oldest one we have in our archives. [see pages 8/9.]
The Centre Magazine had to have a new name when we went Centre as it was pre-
viously called “The East Grouper” and so it was suggested “Out and About” or “Around and
About” which was then shortened to ABOUT.
Hope you all have a good Easter wherever you
spend it and that you get lots of chocolate eggs!
I look forward to hearing from many of you with
contributions to the Summer Edition.
Don’t forget to let me know if you have anything
you want to sell
Best Wishes Janice P.S. Remember Honesty is the best policy unless
you have just eaten the last piece of cake!
P.P.S. The trouble with bucket seats is that not
everybody has the same size bucket.

Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass,
it's more about learning to dance in the rain.

CHAIRMAN’S CHAT
Hi all and welcome to the Easter Edition of the “About.” I am writing this newsletter sat in the caravan with the sun
shinning in, it is glorious and I do hope it continues throughout
spring and summer enabling us all to enjoy the many rallies which are available.
I would like to thank Janice for her previous “About” and all who put pen to paper to make the magazine what it is.
Many thanks to Joan and the social sub committee for all their work in organising
a very successful Informal Dinner Dance at the new venue Bridlington Links. Denis did a great job keeping the dance floor full all night with a wide variety of
music for all to enjoy. It was a sell out and I’m sure next year will prove to be just
as popular as the venue and rally are superb. Steve our web master is looking to upgrade our Centre’s website over the coming
weeks. It will take time so please be patient. The website as we know it will
remain and be updated during the process. Thanks Steve for all the unseen work
you do to achieve a well run web. The Chairman’s Rally is being held at Hutton Cranswick this year. The sports are
being held here as the venue has many facilities. We welcome all children,
grandchildren and adults to join in and have some fun. It is also our one big event to raise money for our Centre Charity The Yorkshire Air Ambulance. There are
many stalls so please come along and help support this event.
Our Gala tents will be erected next to the clubhouse where the events will take
place and on Saturday evening we will be entertained by ‘Sasha’ a professional singer. There will be no bar just bring your own. If you haven’t already booked
then do not delay send your slip in today lets have a great time raising funds for a
good charity. We are running a Tuck Shop, which will be on most rallies. All profits go towards
the Children’s Christmas Party on 13th December at St John in Beverley. The
entertainer this year is The “Bird Man” of Magic. A hot meal is served to all the children before the fun and games start, ending with a visit from Santa.
Plans for our 40th Birthday, May Day 2015 weekend are really taking shape with
Craig Harper already booked for Friday evening and the sensational West
Yorkshire function group ‘Back Beat’ booked for Saturday evening with still more plans in the pipe line. Make a note and Save The Date.
Lastly I must tell you that the Bonfire last year was a full rally and was a great
success, even though we had a downpour after the fire work display, it didn’t stop people tasting the many different food stalls we had on offer. The children
enjoyed a Halloween/Bonfire fancy dress (optional) disco on Friday night. We are
holding the children’s disco again this year on Friday night and afterwards the
clubhouse will remain open for all. It will also be open later on Saturday night
after the firework display, food and bonfire. Happy Caravanning Sandra

CHARITY NEWS Yorkshire Air Ambulance is a
dedicated helicopter emergency
service for the Yorkshire and
the Humber region of England.
It was introduced on 1 April
2000, and currently operates
two aircraft. The helicopters
provide a swift response time &
access to isolated locations,
such as beaches, cliff-tops and
moorland areas which are inaccessible by road. Its original aircraft is based at
Nostell Priory and has landing pads at various major hospitals around the region
including Leeds General Infirmary, Hull Royal Infirmary and James Cook
University Hospital in Middlesbrough.
In October 2007 a second helicopter based at Sheffield City Airport entered
service. The airport closed at the end of April 2008 but a heliport facility was still
provided for the use of the Air Ambulance and the South Yorkshire Police
helicopter. In November 2010 the operational base for the Sheffield-based aircraft
was moved to Bagby Airport near Thirsk.. The second aircraft made another move
in March 2012 to RAF Topcliffe.
OUR THANKS TO ALL THOSE WHO HAVE MADE DONATIONS SO FAR FROM FUND -
RAISING ON RALLIES ETC. REMEMBER EVERY LITTLE HELPS. SEE THE WEBSITE TO
KEEP YOU UP-TO-DATE WITH THE RUNNING TOTAL. THIS WILL BE DISPLAYED
UNTIL JULY & THE FINAL TOTAL ANNOUNCED AT THE A.G.M. IN SEPT.
As Charity Coordinator, I would like to thank all those who have been
collecting cans etc for Malcolm Worsnop. I have heard of people asking
their neighbours to save them so why not ask yours? Please do not squash
them unless you have a proper can crusher. You can give them to Malcolm
on the rally field or deliver them to his home. You can also give them to
me. Don’t forget that he is also collecting any scrap metal or wiring.
THANKS AGAIN MALCOLM! [He made £380 in 2013! ]
Have you been watching HELICOPTER HEROES on your TV? It is all
about The Yorkshire Air Ambulance and makes you feel glad that it is
available to all of us should we need it, even though we hope we never do!

For those who remember my plea in the Winter Edition to save your old bras that are still in good condition, I would like you to
bring them to the Chairman’s Charity Rally, [or give them to me
before if you are not attending the rally.]
YORKSHIRE AIR AMBULANCE BENEFIT FROM THEM and while this does not help our total, I would like to have a GUESS THE TOTAL WEIGHT of bras
that have been contributed, which WILL benefit our total.
THIS IS THE LETTER I HAVE BEEN SENT BY OLIVIA OF THE Y.A.A.
“In recent years the YAA have been running a Bra Campaign asking women to clear out their drawers for a good cause. Bras are in huge demand, particularly in
West Africa and in European countries, where second-hand support is much more
affordable and in demand!
The aim of the campaign was to collect 200,000 bras raising an amazing £10,000 which would keep both helicopters flying for one full day! With help from
supporters all over Yorkshire we managed to reach the target and are now
encouraging supporters to recycle all old textiles, clothing and shoes!
Working with recycling partners, ‘BIU Group, the YAA receive an agreed percentage of the sale of the recycled materials. Good quality items which can be
reused are sold to second-hand clothing traders in the UK, Europe and world-
wide. 'End of life' garments are recycled into industrial wipers and cloths, mattress filling, insulation and new fibres. [To find out where your nearest
clothing bank is please visit: www.buigroup.co.uk/charity]
It may surprise you to know that the Yorkshire Air Ambulance Charity relies on
the generosity of individuals and organisations to help save lives across Yorkshire. In fact as a Charity we only receive help through secondment of paramedics from
the NHS, through Yorkshire Ambulance Service. To keep both of Yorkshire's air
ambulances in the air we need to raise £9990 per day. This is equivalent to £3.6
million per year.”
CHAIRMAN’S CHARITY RALLY JUNE 2014
We are planning a SWEETS & CHOCS TOMBOLA to be run by Joan Baxter &
Joan Kirk, a CAKE STALL to be run by Linda Jones, a HOOK A BEAR to be
run by June Norris, a SWEETS IN THE JAR, a GUESS TEDDY’S BIRTHDAY, a GENERAL TOMBOLA - a WIN THE WHISKY, a TREASURE MAP, a
BOOK & MAG STALL and HAND MADE CARDS as well as CREAM TEAS
being served [As you can see we already have volunteers for some of these but there is always room for more!] If you are willing to run or help with any of these
then please contact us. We also need contributions for the TOMBOLAS, RAFFLE
and CAKE STALL as well as BOOKS & MAGAZINES so even if you cannot
make the rally, you can still do your bit!
Also if anyone wishes to set up a stall for themselves, they may do so for £5.

Chairman’s Rally we would be very grateful.
Please contact me on 01482 867334
Two old people sat eating breakfast when one turns to the other and said
“Do you know that you have a suppository in your ear”, to which the other
replies “I’m glad you saw that as I now know where my hearing aid is”
VISITORS TO RALLIES
If you are expecting visitors on a rally please inform the Rally Marshals of this
and ask your visitors to call at their van when they arrive, or if they arrive
unexpectedly please go across and tell them yourselves. This is not the Rally
Marshals being nosey, it is for the general safety of everyone on the rally field

THE LAWNS CARAVAN SHOW The first weekend in September is a very important one for caravanners
from across the North of England and beyond with the Caravan
Extravaganza Weekend held at the Lawns in Cottingham on the outskirts of Hull.
It is also a very important weekend for the Hessle Branch of the Royal National
Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) who for the last 10 years have been raising funds at
the Show by selling RNLI Souvenirs and raffle tickets and all manner of items
from their stand just outside the entrance to the Lawns Centre itself. This hugely enjoyable weekend has, in those 10 years, now raised some £11,440 for the work
of the Lifeboat Service.
It was also here in 2007 that the East Yorkshire Centre joined the RNLI stand and
held a tombola over the weekend which raised over £450 for the RNLI and specifically the Flamborough Head Lifeboat. The Centre’s Charity Fundraising
that year had began with a visit to the station in March and culminated in members
of the EYC being invited to the naming ceremony of the station’s new Atlantic 85 Class Lifeboat the “Elizabeth Jane Palmer” in the November. In the previous
month at the Centre’s AGM in Brough a cheque for £3419 had been presented to
the RNLI which not only purchased a complete set of new helmets and built in
communications systems for the crew at Flamborough, but also helped towards the
costs of their extensive and varied training.
Our lifeboat supporters have fond memories of that particular fundraising effort
and were really delighted by the support shown by the officials and members of
the EYC. How those 7 years have flown by and it is still pleasing to report that thanks to the support of the Hull and East Riding Caravan Manufacturers Assoc
and particularly the show’s organiser, David Ritchie, the RNLI stand will be back
in its usual location this September and we’ll be delighted to see you all over the
weekend of the 6th and 7th September at what is our most enjoyable fundraiser of the year. [THIS ARTICLE WAS WRITTEN BY STEVE ROBINSON OF THE HESSLE BRANCH OF THE
R.N.L..I. AND SENT TO ME BY JACK POOLE WHO IS ALSO A MEMBER OF THIS BRANCH.]
THINGS MUM WOULD NEVER SAY Sent to be by Sue Holroyd

“Yeah, I used to skip school a lot, too"
“Just leave all the lights on ...it makes the house look more cheery"
“Let me smell that shirt - Yeah , its good for another week"
“Well, if Tom's mum says its OK, that's good enough for me."
“The curfew is just a general time to shoot for. Its not like running a prison

EAST YORKSHIRE CENTRE SWIMMING GALA
The East Yorkshire Centre held a Swimming Gala from 1980 up until the early nineteen nineties. During this period the Centre Swimming Gala was an important
weekend in the annual sporting calendar along with the Centre Children’s Sports
and the Manoeuvrability Tests. The event was held at South Hunsley School, Hesslewood Hall, Melton Country Club or wherever the Centre could hold a rally
near to a swimming pool. It eventually disappeared from the Rally Programme
because of the difficulty of finding a suitable venue.
The competitors need to be fairly competent swimmers—judging from the
programme. The following age groups were required to swim in 3 races of 1
length of each of the following:-
Boys aged 8-10, Girls aged 8-10, breaststroke, backstroke and freestyle
Boys aged 11-13, Girls age 11-13, breaststroke, backstroke and freestyle
Boys aged 14-16, Girls aged 14-16, breaststroke, backstroke and free style
1 width for boys and girls up to 7years
2 lengths freestyle for boys aged 17-21 and girls aged 17-21
Ladies Race [Mums] 1 length
Fun Race adults –Male/Female 2 lengths freestyle
Adults only Championship Male/Female 2 lengths freestyle
There was always a fun swim for everyone after the competition—the Chairman
of the Day often an unwilling participant in this!
The Swimming Gala was resurrected in 2007 by Phil Taylor when he was Centre
Sports Officer. The venue was Archbishop Holgate’s School in York where the Swimming Gala was held in conjuction with the Teenagers Halloween Rally. It
was a successful weekend and the Swimming Gala went well. Unfortunately the
school decided they needed the swimming pool at weekends and we were once
again without a venue.
The Centre holds 5 trophies for the Swimming Gala which were originally
designated as follows:-
1] THE PETT FAMILY TROPHY 8-10 year old girls
2] THE MICK & PAULINE KENT JUNIOR TROPHY for boys 8-10
3] THE CONSTABLE INTERMEDIATE TROPHY FOR 11-13 girls
4] THE BRODDLE FAMILY TROPHY for 11-13 boys
5] THE ALAN HAYNES TROPHY for Best Overall My recollections have been put together with reference to Centre Brochures of previous years and with help from the memories of Centre Members. Especial thanks to Mick Kent
who was involved with the Swimming Gala in the early days. Viki Tripp

THE ORIGIN OF CARAVANNING
The word caravan derives from the word Karwan which was given to groups of merchants which travelled across the desert trade routes of Persia, now called Iran.
In England, the caravan appeared during the early 1800s, long before the
motor vehicle was invented. Their use was functional rather than leisurely.
They were often used as shelter for agricultural workers or travelling coaches for circus and fair-ground showmen. An early reference of such a caravan appears in
Charles Dickens‟ The Old Curiosity Shop of 1840. The fictitious character Mrs
Jarley travels the country with her waxworks show in a van that was: „...not a shabby, dingy, dusty cart, but a smart little house upon wheels, with white
curtains festooning the windows, and window-shutters of green picked out with
panels of a staring red.‟
Travelling communities of Romanies also began
using horse-drawn caravans in the mid 19th Century, previously using tents for shelter. It was
these communities which provided the inspiration
for the first leisure touring caravan The Wanderer.
The Birth of Leisure Touring Caravanning
Caravanning as a leisure pursuit began thanks to the vision of Scottish-born sailor, author and eccentric Dr William Gordon Stables.
He was a great believer in the benefits of outdoor life on the health. Since
childhood he had envied the lifestyle of the Romanies and, inspired by their
traditional caravans, he designed his own Land Yacht named The Wanderer.
Bristol Wagon Works Company was commissioned to manufacture the luxurious horse-drawn caravan which was made from mahogany lined with maple.
In 1885 the caravan took its first trip of 1300 miles from Stables‟ home at
Twyford in Berkshire to Inverness in Scotland.
Caravanning soon began to grow in popularity. Early leisure touring caravanners
were mainly wealthy people who commissioned luxurious horse-drawn homes on wheels. Some of the vans included mod cons such as running water, libraries and
even pianos, while sometimes serving staff accompanied the tours to tend to the
tow-horses or cook dinner.
The pioneers of caravanning labelled themselves as Gentlemen Gypsies and
enjoyed the freedom of the road at the leisurely pace of two miles per hour.
Unlike today, there were no caravan or camp sites to pitch. Instead, caravanners
often applied to landowners for permission to stop on their land. Nearby farms were able to provide food and stabling for the tow-horses along with fresh milk for
the caravanner. These early leisure caravanners were often seen as a novelty.
However, some assumed that these Gentlemen Gypsies were travellers and treated
them with some hostility.

THE FINAL UPDATE ON RUFFLES—THE
HEARING DOG Ruffles is now 2 years old. He excelled in his advanced training
with the sound-work trainer.
Having had a successful meeting with his potential recipient, Ruffles moved in with Sue and her husband Brian, in Bristol.
Sue’s hearing had deteriorated over many years and she is now
profoundly deaf. Even with her strong hearing aids, Sue suffers Tinatus
which sometimes gets loud and can be stressful. Over time, Sue had become more reliant on her husband. Sue spent a lot of time indoors avoiding social events and
mixing with strangers and didn’t feel secure when she went out.
Since being partnered with Ruffles, all of this has changed. Ruffles has given her a
new lease of life and the confidence to get out more and meet new people.
Sue takes Ruffles when she goes shopping and to social events and they go out
walking in the woods where Ruffles enjoys a paddle in the river. When people see
the Hearing Dog Coat that Ruffles wears, people seem to make an effort to speak
more clearly which helps her to communicate.
Sue is a member of a Bowling Club and recently went on a trip to Dorset, taking
Ruffles with her. He was so very well behaved at the Bowling Rinks that everyone
adored him and made him their official club mascot.
Over the past 30 years, Hearing Dogs for Deaf People has created over 1,750 partnerships. Statistics show that deafness now affects up to one in six people in
the United Kingdom, therefore demand for Hearing Dogs is set to grow.
The Hearing Dogs Trust will still support Ruffles with home visits and advice to
ensure he remains happy and healthy throughout his partnership with Sue.
I hope you have enjoyed following Ruffles progress. If you wish to know about
how to sponsor a puppy then speak to me on the rally field or give me a ring.
I am still collecting used stamps to please keep them coming. A few here and a
few there soon add up. Janice Benson
A good time to keep your mouth shut is when you're in deep water.
Gordon Stables even reported stones being thrown at himself and The Wanderer
on his first trip.
How things have changed can you imagine if we travelled at two mile an hour.
Some drivers think we do today when usually it’s the Sunday driver in front but
that’s another story.

Pre Christmas Meal at Pickering
What a start to a weekend –black skies, a little wind but a cheerful bright entrance
with the illuminations even though the site was closed. We were greeted by the
Rally Marshals, well Barry and stand in Denis, who gave us the option of pitches.
Having main electric makes a difference at this time of the year.
Most folks dressed their vans to add to the feel of Christmas time, Santa delivered on time so the little ones of the rally were happy. Saturday a visit to Thornton le
Dale proved like minded ralliers stopping off spot.
Saturday evening meal;--this had been Joan’s worry as to a replacement venue,
but after we walked into the Caley Arms – problem?, no problem! The sit where
you like, hot food and general chit chat, the evening was a happy memory. Geoff spoilt Joan’s surprise Christmas present by saying she wanted a tablet and he had
bought her an Asprin !
Sunday Flag saw a presentation of a retirement plaque to Finlay Kerr from the
Youth Committee, a good 30 minuets of raffle in the fresh air, coffee and
tea was of a good standard ! so were the biscuits.
All in all a relaxed rally just what we all need before the big day!
Many thanks to the 2 Joans, Barry & Geoff Jan Harrison
PLEASE REMEMBER TO CHECK YOUR WHEEL NUTS BEFORE EACH
JOURNEY IN THE SAME WAY AS YOU CHECK LIGHTS AND INDICATORS.
A friend’s little boy wanted a pet spider. Dad went to the pet shop to
shop to purchase one to be told £75.00 each.
“Sorry...”, he said, “...but I can get one cheaper on the web.”

DRIFFIELD NEW YEAR 2013/14 Rally Marshals Christine & Denis Brennan,
Lynn & Alan Woodhead, and Joan & Barry Baxter
Thanks go to the above marshals for giving us an exceedingly good rally to start
2014 with. Alan & Lynn took the trouble to put together a treasure hunt around
the streets of Driffield, which was great fun to do along with meeting other ralliers
as we braved the weather looking for clues. A game of Shuffle Board one afternoon in the hall was also well attended giving plenty of camaraderie.
Every evening some form of different entertainment was organised. Fish & Chips
supper first night with " LETS GO RACING", I never won a penny. Another night we were kept amused with a singing duo plus Denis with his disco.
New Years Party, with spot prizes for dancing and plenty of games went on well
until the early hours. For ralliers choosing to stop an extra night there was a game of bingo, HOORAY:
Justice was delivered as I won a game,...taking home with me the money I had
lost on the Hosses. Thanks once again from Jean Baker.
New Year Rally Driffield—A view from visiting centres!
Once again, us Wessies found ourselves marauding either down the M62 or A166 in the direction of Driffield. There were nine families from Dales and even joined
by one from North Yorkshire. I’m pretty certain that there were more visitors from
other centres but these mentioned were just in our crowd. As usual we took up a large area of both the field and the hall and as usual were subject to the usual
banter from Denis throughout the rally. We have been coming here since 1999 and
in that time have seen East Yorkshire members come and go but like us, generally
return year after year.
So why do we keep coming? A venue that is second to none, nice walk into town,
few great hostelries in town where invariably we meet up with old friends. A
social hall that is a few feet away from the caravan, warm, seasonally decorated and well laid out. Three tremendous nights with good food, varied entertainment
and activities where everyone attending is encouraged to join in. I could go on and
on extolling the virtues of this rally but we all know that the main ingredient for
any rally to work just has to be the people behind it.
Alan and Lynne, Barry and Joan and Denis and Christine and their team of willing
helpers. How these members of your centre continue to keep a major rally like
this going over a period of 14 years is just amazing. Old ideas that work are kept
in and new ideas to refresh things are introduced. Who would have thought that this year we would all be part of the BBC new year concert courtesy of a very
large screen set up and provided by members of your centre called the “Barnsley
Mafia” ? I was pleased to be able to give thanks on behalf of visiting centres at
closing flag. Thanks to all of you at East Yorkshire for welcoming us like you do
Howard Jennings [Chairman YDCC.]

DANCING AT EGGBOROUGH NEW YEAR
Eggborough New Year Rally Just to say we really enjoyed this rally. It is called Wine and Dine,
and we certainly did plenty of both. The catering was excellent as
well as the entertainment. We especially liked the Race night, managed to come out on the winning side and really enjoyed
seeing all the ladies in their fancy hats, I enjoyed getting my posh
hat out of storage for the evening. The nightly table quiz was very good, and some of the questions certainly got us
thinking. Thanks once again to Richard, Janice, Dave, Chris, Tim and June for all
their hard work. Sue and Steve Cowell
EGGBOROUGH NEW YEAR RALLY
A big Thank You to Janice, Richard, Chris, Dave, June & Tim for giving
up their time to entertain us over the New Year. Chief chefs Chris, Tim &
June did us proud with their chicken in white wine sauce and savoury
mince, both were delicious! While Janice & Richard entertained us with
their quizzes, games and dancing ably helped by Dave, Sue, Maurice,
Suzanne and Greg.
Thank you all once again Sue & John Dale

Burns Night Rally York
The biggest Elsan pit you have ever seen in the corner of the field greeted us when
we arrived it must have taken Richard and John hours to dig it and as far as I know they are still filling it in, but no snow this year just rain but they had laid a metal
road through the field to stop you getting stuck and clean to walk
on to the pub. [For those not there, there were some workmen
laying some sewer pipes for a new nearby housing estate!—Ed]
Friday night started with a sing song with Mel and a competition followed by a supper of sandwiches and real chips and we were
put into our clans. Once again we were the McDuffs willing and
ready to go for what laid ahead tomorrow night.
Saturday morning and a rather wet paper boy (John) delivered my
paper to the door, read it and then had a quick trip into York not much fun walking round in the rain so back to the rally field and
get ready for tonight. Quite a few kilts about and a very novel competition to raise
funds for the Air Ambulance for 50p guess what colour draws Richard wears under his kilt and
you could not cheat because he had
two pairs on one over the other.
Poems and the dressing of the Haggis and the toasts to the Lasses
and Lads and we wee dram to toast
Robbie Burns, the haggis neaps and tatties followed by roast beef or turkey and all the trimmings followed by a lovely
pudding thanks to all the staff at the pub. This was followed by
more competitions and joke telling,
supplied by Janice, and this year we did not come last in the final clan standings
which is a leg up from last year—next year
we will move to the top of the pile!
The flag was also held on Saturday night
so you could have a lie in on Sunday, also a 500th rally plaque was presented to Mark & Yvonne Brooks, well done to them,
and time to thank our marshals, Richard, Janice, John and Sue for a fun packed
rally which made you forget all the rain, this was done by new secretary Linda a first time for her but hopefully not the last
and from all us ralliers thank you and see you
next year. David & Hazel Ferdinand,
Yorkshire Pennine Centre.

RALLY SECRETARY
Hi All, Well the rallying season is now in full swing but unfortunately
we had to cancel a few at the start of the season for various reasons.
As I said in the Winter About, I am now well on with the 2015 programme so if you have any ideas for new—especially hard standing ones—or
reintroduced venues, now is the time to talk to me either on the phone or on the
rally-field. If you are interested in being a marshal for the first time then have a
word with me or any member of the Committee and we will do our best to answer
any questions you might have. Denis
P.S. I hope all Rally Marshals have seen the new information about van spacing on the
Web. If not then please read it as soon as possible.
P.P.S. Please note that North Yorkshire now require a non-returnable booking fee of £3 for
their rallies and not £2 as per our Brochure

SOCIAL REPORT
Hi Folks
I hope all who went to the Informal, at
Bridlington, enjoyed themselves. It was
a sell out. The next event in our Social Calendar is the Formal Dinner & Dance at York
Racecourse where our guest is Jan Moore — a
Vice Chairman of The Caravan Club—and her
husband Daryl.
It is on Saturday September 20th and more details of this and the rally are on page 83 of the Centre Brochure. The menu is on page
32 of this ABOUT. Please book your tickets with me as soon as possible
Happy Easter to you all, Joan
Each year the Membership Secretary receives enquiries from members
who have not received a Rally Book and it is usually found that they
have not renewed their Centre Membership when their annual Club
membership was renewed.
Please note that it is a Caravan Club requirement that all Centre
members ask for their Centre membership to be renewed each year,
by:- (a) completing the slip enclosed with their Club membership
renewal and returning this to the Caravan Club, or (b) renewing
Centre membership through the Caravan Club website.
Centre membership must be renewed each year with the Caravan
Club, even if you pay by direct debit.
VISION PLUS DIRECTIONAL AERIAL
During a visit to the Coachman Factory, a visitor noticed that all of the caravans on the production line had the pointed end of the aerial facing the rear of the
caravan. He queried this and it was explained that the aerial is designed so that the
pointed end of the aerial should face the rear of the caravan whilst towing. It was
also pointed out that this was explained in the instructions and handbook. If the caravan is towed with the pointed end facing the front there is a possibility that the
seals on the mast can become damaged.
However the instructions are slightly confusing and that is probably why so many
vans tow with the aerial the wrong way round. The instructions explain that the
red dot on the mast indicates the front of the aerial for tuning purposes only. When towing, the red dot should be facing the rear of the caravan.
[It goes to show that many people do not read the instructions.]

SUE HOLROYD’S 65th BIRTHDAY BASH AT SPALDINGTON
On behalf of all the ralliers I would like to thank Sue & John for the lovely buffet they put on for us all at Spaldington. We had use of the Golf Club’s Function
Room which we use on the Saturday for the Valentine’s meal. Sue also had 2
cakes, one fruit and one sponge which were beautifully made by Judy Rickell. As I
was doing the rally thanks I also did the thanks for the Grand Buffet which I did in rhyme and Sue has asked me to reproduce it in the About for those who were not
there. Here’s hoping you have many more birthdays ahead of you Sue!
At your first rally is when we met
at a rally at Brantingham where it was wet
We got on so well that a fortnight later
for the Bonfire Rally you helped us cater.
You were not put off, it fact you were hooked
and so many more rallies did get booked
Things went well and we had a good time
til of something sinister you had a sign
We were all quite shocked, what could we do,
to be of support and help you through
We know that you had a very tough time,
but with John beside you, you would make it through fine
I think your wedding helped you through too
and we all enjoyed a “Right Good Do”
Thankfully now those days are passed
and now this special birthday has come at last
We are so glad we are here with you
to once more have a “Right Good Do”
Thanks for this evening it has been great,
for 5 years time lets Save the Date
So please would everyone here [except Sue,]
raise their glasses with a toast to you. Janice Benson

A BIG THANK YOU.
I would like to say " a big thank you " to all my friends who gave me so many lovely
cards and gifts for my 65th birthday. Also to the Rally Marshals Paul, Moira, Jan, Ted and
not forgetting Margaret and Brian, for been so helpful and allowing us to highjack the
Friday evening . Also a big thank you to Judy Rickell for making my two beautiful cakes,
Janice for her poem , and of cause my husband John for putting on the lovely Buffet and
decorating the room. Sue Holroyd

INFORMAL DINNER—FLAMBOROUGH
Early on the Friday morning it was raining
quite heavily but by the 10am opening time,
the sun had come out and except for a wind,
it was quite a nice day. The rest of the
weekend was much the same so it was nice
not to be using umbrellas and macs to get to
the coach which took us to The Links
for the Informal Dinner.
The meal was
good and
Denis kept the
floor full for
most of the night. We all
had a piece of Ian &
Val’s Golden Wedding
Cake and Richard & I
were presented with the Norman Gowland
Friendship Cup.
Unfortunately after the meal Roy Hall was taken ill and had to go back to
his van. At the end of the evening we heard he had had a heart attack and
was in hospital. Unfortunately he didn’t survive the attack and died during
the night. A minutes silence was held at Flag and the flags were flown at
half mast in respect. [see page 37 for more about Roy]
Joan Baxter was thanked for her hard work in arranging the event and
Yorkshire Dales were told they couldn’t come again as they had won too
many raffle prizes. The Sunday sunshine kept many ralliers there until late
afternoon. Thanks to Joan & Barry and Joan & Geoff for running the rally.
Janice Benson
P.S. Ian and Val Brabiner would like to thank the members of East Yorkshire
Centre and visiting Centres who helped them celebrate their Golden Wedding
Anniversary at the Centre's Informal Diner Dance.

ACROSS THE POND RALLY—EGGBOROUGH
We always like to do Janice and Richard's rallies at Eggborough.
With Sandra and Trevor on the catering you cannot go wrong.
We arrived on Friday with no problems, legs down and set up in
no time, hard standing at this time of year is great, and the
village hall is first rate.
Janice and Richard had not been well , so Ted and Steve sited the vans,
June helped Janice and I believe Tim was making himself available every
where he could. Sandra, Trevor, Doreen and Malcolm where on with the
food preparation, and what a fabulous job they did. We had a Yankee
Yorkshire supper, which turned out to be Yorkshire pudding with sausages,
onions, new potatoes and gravy in it, followed by muffins or donuts.
We had an American theme quiz and low and behold our table won !
Saturday was sunny with a cold wind, so a few people took advantage of
the 10% discount at Wandahome at Knottingley, or used their bus pass and
went shopping elsewhere.
For Saturday evening most of us dressed to fit the Hoedown
theme. We had a fabulous meal, salmon and salad starter
with crusty bread, or pate, main was chicken in a sauce with
vegetables and a suet dumpling.
EDEN CAMP
We had not run Eden Camp before but we thoroughly enjoyed it. Caroline,
Ian, Nathan and Elliot really made it easy. Having free access to the camp
kept everybody busy all weekend and the children loved the adventure
playground.
We were given access to a ‘hut’
for each evening which was
nice to be able to gather in
comfort. Saturday night was a
‘proper’ family social. Caroline
and Ian had everything
organised. There were games for the children and a quiz for the adults.
Dave and I would really like to thank them for their hard work and look
forward to next year.
Kath & Dave Young

DRAX POWER STATION RALLY
Friday was cold and damp so it was not an
easy job siting the vans, but the marshals all
still had smiles on their faces. They had about
70 vans to site so quite a lot of hard work.
Saturday and Sunday were both bright and sunny which made up for Friday
I think a lot of people went shopping on the Saturday as there were cars
going and coming back all day long. Saturday Night and time to make the
short walk to the Club House for the Hog Roast and entertainment by a
group called “Carefree” who sang a lot of the songs from the 60’s and 70’s
The food was delicious and plenty of it and you could also have a sweet if
you had room for one! It took a while for the dancing to start—we were all
too full to move—but when it did start, the floor was never empty, we even
had the Chairman demonstrating how to do the Head Banger!
We lasted out til midnight although the evening went on for about another
hour, I believe. Bearing in mind that we were to lose an hour in bed and my
other half wanted to be awake for 9am [new time] to watch the Grand Prix
we decided it was time to retire!
Sunday morning Flag was held in more sunshine and so some people
[including us] were reluctant to go home. We didn't win a raffle prize but
we did win the quiz so we were quite pleased.
Thanks to Denis & Christine and Sandra & Trevor for a good weekend. If
there is a hog roast again next year you had better book early as I am sure
the rally will soon get full.
Janice Benson
Dessert was Bill Baileys profiteroles gateau, followed by coffee or tea. We
had some readings between courses about America, then it was on with the
line and barn dancing. Joanne came to help Janice with the line dancing
tuition, so a good time was had by all.
Sunday morning sunny again, flag inside at 11am. We had
a good raffle and the thanks were given by John Holroyd,
then after a last catch up with our friends we had to pack up
and leave for home. Sue Holroyd

Congratulations
to Chris & Dave Healey’s daughter Leanne who
on Mother’s Day abseiled down the Holiday Inn
in Hull dressed as Spiderman and raised over
£300 for Yorkshire Cancer Research. Well Done!
Leanne’s Story Leanne aged 29, and mum to Joe 10, Felix 8, Charlotte 2, and Oscar 9 months gave up her
Mother’s Day in the unselfish act of abseiling down
14 stories of the Holiday Inn in Hull City Centre for Cancer Research.
Leanne’s motivation to undertake this: “Cancer affects so many peoples life’s in devastating ways. If everyone leaves it
to someone else to raise money we would get nowhere. I have lost many loved
ones and the realisation is each and every one of us is as likely as the next to at some point need that all important cure. Brave people who have beaten and /or
live with Cancer inspire me to help as much as possible
When I went over the edge of the building I felt vulnerable. I felt grateful for my life and lucky as I looked down to look at the faces of family, at people I love, I felt
more alive than ever with adrenaline pumping through my body, but I also tried to
imagine what sufferers go through each day they fight their battle, the brave face
they put on, and how vulnerable they are to this terrible disease. I only experienced it for 5 minutes and was exhausted!!
I was tiny up there on my own, ( sadly I don’t mean I had suddenly become a size
8) Insignificant almost, it really helped focus my mind, on just living— but together... we can help to raise enough money to find a cure.”
Drax Power Station 28, 29, 30th March
I feel I have to congratulation, Sandra, Trevor, Denis and
Christine on this rally which we thoroughly enjoyed.
Saturday night was given over to food and festivities, with the hog roast, what a
treat (although I am sure that the pig would not think so!) and then live music from
the group Carefree. Even Dave and I knew all the songs! We know that rallies
like this don’t just happen; they take lots of planning and organisation.
Even the weather was kind to us, and we all went home full and happy. Thank you
all once again, if rally marshals do not organise rallies , then we the ralliers would
not have anywhere to go and enjoy ourselves and meet up with our friends.
Keep up the good work. Chris and Dave Healey

LEVEN RALLY—APRIL 2014 We would just like to thank Jane, Neil, Maureen and Steve for the wonderful
weekend we have had with them at Leven.
This was a new venue so we didn't know what to expect but when we arrived it was a lovely rally field. The marshals had been busy and already put up the
white party tent ready for our weekend. We got legs down and it was coffee
and chat time and a discussion as to what we could draw for the competition to put in our window. The marshals gave us the name of a film and a blank sheet
of paper to draw a clue to the name of the film, this caused quite a bit of confusion
between us, because none of us watch many films. We did our best and put our
drawings in our windows for other ralliers to come round and have a guess
Friday night invited into tent for coffee at eight and a general social catch up
with our fellow ralliers. Not quite sure who made the Lemon Drizzel cake and the Fruit Loaf that went with the coffee but they were delicious.
Saturday we sat around chatting and eventually went for a walk down the village.
We were back in the party tent for a night of fun. Started off with a game of Chinese Bingo which caused quite a stir when a child was taken off a seat, the first
to do this was our very own rally secretary Denis who got quite a response from us
all. In the end there were four prizes for the lucky one sat on the seats. Barry was
one of them and won his favourite—a box of biscuits. The night was going well and everyone was enjoying themselves then Steve started his bingo night.
I have been rallying quite a number of years and never ever have I heard an
American bingo caller - great fun - wont say any more about this except if you get the chance to go on this rally next year please book it, we will be.
Then if that wasn't enough, the marshals came round with plates of sandwiches which were a surprise and very well received. But they did’nt stop there, they
came in with plates of cakes next. Joan and I were having a problem trying not
to eat the cakes but we had to give in to one piece.
By then it was nearly time to close the social so we all just sat around chatting. Sunday morning coffee cakes and biscuits were served up. the raffle was out.
Jane did her thank you to everyone for coming on the rally, it was our pleasure
Jane. The lucky vans were drawn, the prize for the completion was given, kids sweets were handed out as there was only a few children on the rally.
I was selling equipment and the tuck shop and Denis did the thanks to the
marshals for an excellent weekend. We would just like to say out thanks for a most enjoyable weekend and we look forward to being on your next rally at Leven.
Thank you again Jane, Neil, Maureen and Steve

A Journey to 1000 Rallies Doreen and Malcolm Worsnop, joined the East Yorkshire Centre in 1977.
They started rallying in 1977 and completed their 1000th rally at Middleton
in the year 2004.
They began rallying to encourage their
children Dawn and Martin to
socialise. Both Dawn and Martin took
up the position of chair of the
Teenage Section of the Centre. They
were introduced to rallying by
workmates who invited them to Castle
Howard and Hesslewood orphanage.
This was the sports event at that time
and the children enjoyed it so much that
when Mum and Dad asked them would
you like us to get a caravan they both
immediately said yes
Malcolm and Doreen pictured at Eggborough New Year Rally
2013/14 with the trophy presented to them at Middleton in 2004.
So the journey began, their first rally in 1977 was on the school field at
Bempton. At this rally, they were invited to the social in the village hall
having never been to a social event before they decided to go. When
Doreen opened the door of the village hall, she turned to Malcolm and said
we cannot go in here they are all in evening dress. We are not dressed
suitably. At that moment, two other ralliers appeared in ordinary clothing.
They entered the hall, so Malcolm, Doreen and children followed them to
find that the ladies in evening dress were the male contestants in the Miss
Bempton Competition, one of whom had a beard!
Their first van was a Minster Huntsman, built in Beverley. The children
were in the bunk and the hammock at the rear of the van. The van was
changed after 1 year, as the bunks were too small for them. A Mustang
Stallion was the next van.
They have fond memories of the wheelbarrow race at Driffield. Where
centre members dressed as gnomes were sat in the barrows for the race.
They were having lunch in their costumes, whilst seated around the
mushrooms that Malcolm had made from dustbin lids and paper mache.
The people driving by were very curious about the Gnomes.
29
In 1978 they were really tested when they attended a rally at Humnanby.
The field was a quagmire and the person who had offered to tow them off
decided to partake of a liquid lunch, by the time they eventually got home it
was after 6pm. They then discovered they had lost the house key,
fortunately, Grandma lived not far away and the children went to collect the
spare.
One rally they ran turned into a quagmire and the yellow flag was flying.
The vans had to be got off the field; a well-known rally secretary had to
fetch a tow truck to assist. They also had help from another member who
used ropes and block and tackle. Other members including one who was
expecting, pushed vans off of the field. Malcolm and Doreen soon stopped
her. They ran a rally at York, not realising that the Cheshire Centre had
been invited to join with them. They had 400 vans turn out for this,
fortunately there were 6 rally marshals. They then decided to organise a
social in the School Hall—brave people!!!!
They continued from their 1000th milestone to complete their 1000th East
Yorkshire Centre rally at Flamborough in 2011. These dedicated pair have
now reached a total in excess of 1300 rallies. They are aiming to achieve
1400 by the end of the year, which will include 1100 East Yorkshire Centre
rallies.
This is the first of a series of items about our Centre members who have
received the 1000 rally award. Tim Norris
A SPECIAL APOLOGY TO DEREK & SUE BRICE
You may have seen in the March edition of the
Caravan Club Magazine, a photo of Denis &
Christine Brennan receiving their 1000th Rally
Plaque, with the article saying they are the third in
our Centre to do so. Malcolm & Doreen Worsnop
and Len & Mary Stead were the two others. How-
ever Derek and Sue have also done 1000 Rallies
and were presented with their plaque in October
2012. The Committee apologise for this omission and hope that Derek &
Sue will continue to do many more rallies both with our Centre and others.

Three friends from the local congregation were asked, "When you're in
your casket, and friends and congregation members are mourning over you,
what would you like them to say?"
Artie said, "I would like them to say I was a wonderful husband, a fine
spiritual leader, and a great family man."
Eugene commented, "I would ike them to say I was a wonderful teacher
and servant of God who made a huge difference in people's lives.."
Al said, "I'd like them to say, 'Look, he's moving!' M.H.
COPY OF LETTER SENT BY THE CLUB CHAIRMAN—GRENVILLE
CHAMBERLAIN—TO EVERY CENTRE OF THE CARAVAN CLUB
Smith climbs to the top of Mt. Sinai to get close enough to talk to God. Looking up, he asks the Lord. "God, what does a million years mean to you?"
The Lord replies, "A minute."
Smith asks, "And what does a million dollars mean to you?"
The Lord replies, "A penny." Smith asks, "Can I have a penny?" from Margaret Hearty
John was on his deathbed and gasped pitifully, "Give me one last request, dear," he said. "Of course, John," his wife said softly.
"Six months after I die," John said, "I want you to marry Bob."
"But I thought you hated Bob," she said..

MOVING TO A CARE HOME [sent in by Jean Baker]
There’s an old chap come to our care home, Rather quiet, but nicely dressed,
Keeps himself to himself most of the time, He needs time to get settled, I guessed.
Someone said: He’s a very good pianist, We’ve a Steinway, he might like to play.
Who knows, we might have a bit of a sing-song. That would certainly brighten our day.
Do you think he could play some Glenn Miller? Or maybe some Irving Berlin?
We’ll Meet Again, or The White Cliffs Of Dover, or When They Begin the Beguine?
We certainly don’t need any song sheets Word perfect we’ll be, don’t you fret
There might be things we just can’t remember Words of songs, though, we never forget
I’m not sure what the next generation will sing When they’re in a care home like me.
I doubt very much if they’ll have a sing song So they won’t know how great it can be
You see that is the problem with pop songs, They come and go quick as a flash,
Just like the singers and most of the bands, Number One for a week then.......crash
So what are the poor fans left with? Nothing memorable, Beatles maybe,
But they don’t have the lyrics and melodies we had, Nor the memories, like you and me.
So I hope the new bloke can be tempted, He’s maybe just waiting the chance
I bet if he played us a St Bernard Waltz We’d jump out of our wheel chairs and dance!
[How many ralliers can identify with this poem..... not many just yet I hope]

Barmouth, Gwynedd, in June 2 years ago, died as the result of an
accident, an inquest determined. A granddaughter was rescued but
suffered 65% burns. It is thought that the fire was caused by an extension
lead in an awning which had not been fully unwound, permitting it to over-
heat. It was speculated that this would also have caused a transformer
attached to a cool box to overheat. It is believed that a flashover occurred,
causing an explosion. A smoke detector was fitted, but it had no battery.
This is something that could happen to most of us!
We all try to keep tidy and not unwinding the extension lead keeps it tidy!
Is this really a good idea?
Also most of us have at some point disconnected the battery in the smoke
alarm because ‘it goes off when cooking the toast’, have we put it back?
There are good ships There are wood ships There are ships that sail the sea
But the best ships are the friend ships And may they ever be Sue Holroyd
Dear All
I would like to take this opportunity to say a big THANK YOU to everyone
for the cards, phone calls, texts and best wishes that Sue & I received
during my recent illness.

DID YOU KNOW?
"Listen" and "Silent" use the same letters?
The words "race car" spelled backwards still spells "race car"
"Eat" is the only word that if you take the first letter and move it to the
last, it spells its past tense "Ate"?

what is baby oil made from?

OBITUARY
ROY SYRETT
Our dad sadly passed away on Tuesday 12th March. He had been ill with COPD
for quite some time. Our family used to go caravan rallying in the 70s, 80s and 90s
(Roy, Lynn, Jackie and Toni ), enjoying the activities, friendship and camaraderie that the club brought. Our first rally was Rosedale Abbey on the
Easter weekend of 1974.
Dad was a committee member for a number of years and may best be
remembered for bringing home the Centre’s first ever silverware in 1978. He
coached the Under 16s, five-a-side football team to victory at the Northern
Centres Rally that year.
Roy went on to win the prestigious Goodwill Trophy later on that season, after all
the goodwill and pride the big football win generated for the centre. It may seem
inconsequential now, but way back then, it was huge!!
Roy became the East Yorkshire Centre’s assistant sports officer the following year, eventually becoming the Sports Officer for a number of years. He even
managed the England football squad at the International Caravan Club Rally at
Cheltenham Racecourse in 1979, when we attended (brilliant rally, by the way)
He was absolutely thrilled to be asked to be the England Manager and it was his
first claim to fame.
Our parents ran many rallies over the years, including the Hare and Hounds at
Holme Upon Spalding Moor, Eastrington Show and the New Year Rally at
Wykeham. I’m sure there were more, but I can’t seem to remember them right now. But being members of the East Yorkshire Centre brought our family many
happy memories.
Our family were also regular ralliers with some of the other Yorkshire Centres,
especially South Yorkshire and Yorkshire Dales. Roy’s other claim to fame was
making the nearly 1000 mile journey from Madrid to Calais in one fell swoop… just so they could enjoy a little bit more Viva Espana before boarding the ferry,
England bound!!
Our Mum Lynn sadly died in 2002. But Dad continued to be pretty active until
just a few years ago, visiting me, Toni, and my family in London, Ontario, Canada
as often as we would let him!!

THANK YOU
I would like to say a big thank you for cards and condolences sent from all
the caravanners which I received on Gordon’s death last November.
Yours sincerely Elsie Preston

AUDREY MAY KING May 1935—March 2014
On Wednesday March 19th, Audrey King of Hutton Cranswick, lost her
fight with cancer. Her funeral was on Thursday 27th March.
Audrey and Dennis were married in May 1956 and had 2 sons Nicholas and
Andrew. They have 5 grandchildren and one great grandson. Dennis and
Audrey caravanned for over 35 years. Audrey’s favourite
place of all was Scotland, especially the far north. The Lake
District was a close second as Audrey just loved Hills and
Mountains. Audrey also loved heading off to the corner of
any grass field for the weekend with her East Yorkshire
Centre friends. She organised and ran, with others,
several rallies over the years. Audrey always maintained
that she wanted her ashes to be placed in the Hub Cap of the
caravan wheel, as this would allow her to continue travelling forever.
Audrey was very formidable lady, a very strong character who if she
thought it, she said it, and no exceptions we're made. Audrey enjoyed
socialising and would enter into conversation with anyone. She enjoyed
talking about families, holidays and life experiences.
Travel overseas with good friends and family also became a passion. In
retirement, she visited Canada, America, Switzerland and various other
countries over the years.
The above was an extract from the eulogy spoken at her funeral J.V.B.
Roy Hall died as a result of a heart attack on the evening of the Informal Dinner at Flamborough in March. His funeral was in
Beverley on Thursday 20th March where many members of our
Centre went to pay their last respects. Roy and his wife June have
been rallying with East Yorkshire for many years and were also great supporters of the National Rally. Our sympathy goes to June
and her daughter and family on their sad loss.
BEREAVEMENT
Only a matter of days after the Winter Edition was published we learnt of the death of another of our long standing members—
BERNARD WAYLAND who will be remembered by the “older
members” as being the man who introduced solar panels to the Centre. His funeral
was on Dec 23rd and we send our condolences to his widow May and his daughter
Chris Hastie and her family and Chris’s sisters and their families.

THE CITATION READS AS FOLLOWS:-
I wish to nominate Ted Robson to receive the Goodwill Trophy for 2013. This stems from the report in the AGM edition of the About of the assistance
provided to the young couple who had got into difficulties when trying to turn
round after taking a wrong road. Without his help in a remote part of the Lake
District they would have had a very expensive recovery charge.
Using his own car, Ted had assisted them to get their caravan back on the road and safely on their way. This was the first time they had been away in their
caravan. He also gave them guidance on the clear defects in the roadworthiness of
their caravan which hopefully has led them to get these fixed and thereby avoid an
accident waiting to happen.
It was for this sort of deed this Trophy was originally presented to the Centre and as such he is a worthy candidate to receive this award Richard Benson
