The First Thanksgiving

The Thanksgiving holiday in the U.S. started in 1621.The Pilgrims and the Native Americans cametogether for a large party.

The Pilgrims had left their home in Europe to cometo America. They did not like the church in England.First, they went to the Netherlands and then toAmerica.

The Pilgrims sailed to America on a ship called theMayflower. They arrived in what is nowMassachusetts in November 1620.

It was too late to start farming. Many Pilgrims

died that winter because they didn't have enough food.

The local Native Americans were members of theWampanoag tribe. The tribe gave the Pilgrims food.

One of the tribe members was Squanto, he spokeEnglish and taught the Pilgrims to grow corn andcatch fish. In 1621, after Pilgrims harvested their cornand other crops, they celebrated with a large feast.

Many Wampanoag tribe members visited andbrought more food. They were happy that they hadplenty to eat and were friends.
