Types of BackupsDisk-to-Disk• NAS

– NAS – Redundant/fault tolerant– Hot-swappable drives in a RAID5 array– Capacities in the multi-TBs

• External Hard Drives– Ext. HD – Not fault tolerant– Single drives in 3.5in. or 2.5in. sizes (PC/notebook)– Upwards to 2TB for 3.5 and 500GB for 2.5 (at time of this writing)– Recommend 2 or more drives for rotation

Recommended Methods for Backup• Round-Robin or Incremental Media

– The simplest of the rotation schemes and most widely used amongst small businesses.– A specified number of drives are uniquely identified and rotated daily.– For example, 5 drives labeled 1 through 5; drive 1 could be used on Monday, drive 2 on

Tuesday, etc. – The difference between RR and IM backups is that RR rotations normally use the days

of the week as labels and each drive is used only on that day. The IM rotation numbers the drive and just uses the next sequential drive and starts over.

– IM is easier to utilize, because if your company misses a backup day (e.g., because Wednesday is a holiday), then you might mix up which drive had the last successful backup.

• Grandfather-Father-Son or GFS– 3 sets of drives are used, 20 in all.– The daily, or son, backups are rotated daily with one of the drives becoming a father on

a weekly basis.– The weekly, or father, drives are rotated amongst themselves with one becoming a

grandfather drive on a monthly basis.
