RED RAIDERS RANKED 19TH NATIONALLYThe Red Raiders are ranked No. 19 nationally by both the NFCA/USA Today and ESPN.com/USA Soft-ball polls as Tech remains one of the few undefeated teams in the nation. The ranking is the highest in school history as prior to this season Tech had not been ranked in either poll since ending the 1999 season at No. 24 in the NFCA rankings.

ALLEN NAMED BIG 12 PLAYER OF THE WEEKTexas Tech’s solid start to the season appears to be catching notice around the Big 12 as Cydney Allen was named this week’s Player of the Week by con-ference officials. Allen follows teammate Logan Hall who earned the award just a week ago. The junior from Taylorsville, Utah went 7-for-13 at the plate in the Red Raider Classic to go along with three home runs and nine RBIs.

ON DECKTexas Tech makes its first road trip in over a month next week, traveling to Clearwater, Fla. for the USF - The Game Tournament where the Red Raiders will face Jacksonville, Long Island, UT-Chattanooga, Bos-ton University, and Liberty in a three-day event that runs March 18-20. The Red Raiders and Colorado State will play a non-tournament game on March 17.

Rocky Johnson Field opened in 2001, giving Texas Tech one of the newest softball facilities in the country. In the 10 years since its opening, the complex has gone through several changes, including the addition of the team facility down the left field line which opened in 2010, making “The Rock” one of the finest facilities in the country.

Take the Texas Tech Parkway exit and turn north (right) for a quarter of a mile until you reach the first stop light (10th Street). THE SERIES• Alcorn State - Tech will be facing the Braves for the first time in school history.• Evansville - The Red Raiders are 1-1 all-time against the Purple Aces after a two-game series that took place March 4-5, 2000, in Corpus Christi, Texas.

A LOOK AT ALCORN STATEThe Braves enter this weekend’s tournament 6-5 on the season with one of those wins coming over Ole Miss. An NCAA Regional participant a year ago, Al-corn State’s lone win in its last six games came in a 3-1 victory against the Rebels in the first game of a doubleheader in Oxford, Miss.

A LOOK AT EVANSVILLEEvansville arrives in Lubbock riding a nine-game los-ing streak as the Purple Aces are 1-11 on the season after tournaments at South Alabama, Southern Miss, and Georgia Tech. Evansville’s lone win on the year came in a 10-3 victory Feb. 19 over Southeastern Louisiana. The Aces dropped a 6-0 decision to No. 7 Tennessee on March 3 in Knoxville, Tenn.

TAKING IT TO THE VALLEYTech will be facing its third opponent from the Mis-souri Valley Conference when it takes on Evansville this weekend. The Red Raiders have previously de-feated both Bradley and Wichita State earlier in the year.

RED RAIDERS AMONG THE FINAL UNBEATENTexas Tech enters the midweek series as one of the few unbeaten teams left in the country. According to Ultimate College Softball, only five teams (Florida, Michigan, South Carolina-Upstate, Texas Tech, and Washington) remain undefeated through games Wednesday night.

POWERFUL OFFENSE LEADS THE BIG 12Texas Tech enters this weekend with the top offense in the Big 12 as the Red Raiders have a league-lead-ing .403 average to go along with 223 runs scored and 196 RBIs. The next-highest average in the con-ference is .346 from Texas.

NEW MEXICO PROVES TO BE TOUGH TESTWednesday’s doubleheader against New Mexico ended up being two of Tech’s closest games this sea-son as the Red Raiders took game one, 9-6, before closing the day with a 5-3 win. Tech had previously played only one game (St. John’s on Feb. 25) since the season-opening Arizona State Kajikawa Tourna-ment that was decided by three runs or less.

JAMES LEAVES HER MARK AGAINST LOBOSSandy James provided a huge lift to the Tech offense against New Mexico, belting two home runs in the doubleheader while adding eight RBIs. Her four RBIs in each game set a new season high as the sopho-more accounted for eight of Tech’s 14 total runs.

PITCHING STAFF SETS SCHOOL RECORDSThe Texas Tech pitching staff set several school re-cords during the Red Raider Classic, including most shutouts in a row (5), consecutive hitless innings (11.2), and consecutive shutout innings (27.1). Brit-tany Talley leads the Red Raiders in wins so far with eight on the year.

HALL NAMED BIG 12 PLAYER OF THE WEEKAfter hitting .583 during the Jeannine McHaney Me-morial Classic, junior infielder Logan Hall was named the Big 12 Player of the Week on March 1. In addi-tion to her 7-for-12 weekend at the plate, Hall added three home runs, two of which were grand slams, and 16 total RBIs to help keep Tech undefeated.

RED RAIDERS ALREADY OFF TO RECORD SEASONAfter beginning the year with the best start in school history thanks to a 5-0 showing at the ASU Kajikawa Tournament, Tech added to its list of early-season accomplishments last Sunday. The Red Raiders won their 22nd-straight game, continuing the squad’s best start in school history.

Dennis, Mikey Kenney, and Raven Richardson were all honored on the all-tournament team.

KENNEY PRODUCING IN LEADOFF SPOTSince moving to the leadoff spot to start the year, Mike Kenney has continued to show she is one of the top power hitters in the Big 12 as the sophomore has been one of the main catalysts for the Tech of-fense this year with her .538 on-base percentage and .442 batting average. She leads the Big 12 with 12 doubles, three more than her total from the en-tire 2010 season.

DREWRY NEARING CAREER RBI NUMBERSAfter only 22 games, Stephanie Drewry is close to matching her RBI total from the previous two sea-sons combined. The junior currently has 15 RBIs this year, five more than her 2010 total and eight more from her freshman season in 2009.

TECH STAYS ON PITCHING BY COMMITTEE PATHEntering the year, Shanon Hays said that Tech would rely on pitching by committee, and after 16 games, the second-year head coach has stayed true to his word. Brittany Talley leads Tech with eight wins thus far, while Ashley Brokeshoulder has added seven and Kelsey Dennis has five of her own. Karli Merlich picked up her first win of the year against St. John’s and Kermitria Ward has served as Tech’s primary closer with two wins and three saves.

AVERAGES SOURING OVER .400Texas Tech currently has five regular position play-ers with a batting average at .400 or higher. Logan Hall leads all players with a .500 average followed by Cydney Allen, Emily Bledsoe, Mikey Kenney, and Ra-ven Richardson, who all are over the .400 mark so far.

HALL NAMED STAT STAR ON ESPN.COMFollowing her performance at the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic, Logan Hall was selected as one of ESPN’s “Stat Stars” for the previous week. The website lists the top performers from the pre-vious week each Monday or Tuesday on its College Sports page.

JEANNINE MCHANEY MEMORIAL CLASSICTexas Tech honored the university’s long-consid-ered founder of women’s athletics with the Jean-nine McHaney Memorial Classic. The Red Raiders faced St. John’s, Northern Illinois, and Wichita State in the three-day event that ran Feb. 25-27 at Rocky Johnson Field. McHaney was the first athletics direc-tor when the women’s athletics department was formed in 1975 and remained a top member of the athletics department for the next two decades. She passed away in 1994.

HALL BOOSTS MIDDLE OF THE ORDERTo say Logan Hall had a successful Texas Tech Invi-tational might be an understatement. The junior infielder hit .611 at the plate (11-for-18) with 11 RBIs, three of which came off a three-run home run against Utah Valley in the weekend finale. Hall leads Tech with 40 RBIs on the year and has recorded a .500 average, the highest on the team.

SPEAKING OF HALL...Logan Hall began the Texas Tech Invitational with a memorable performance against Utah Valley in the early game on Friday. The junior smashed two triples in the game, tying Denise Jackson for the school re-cord that had not been matched since the 1997 sea-son against New Mexico.

HOME RUN WATCH BEGINS FOR KENNEYMikey Kenney’s two home run day to close the Texas Tech Invitational moved the sophomore into a tie for fourth on the school’s career homer chart. She is now tied with Jennifer Bowers (2005-08) with 17 career dingers and is three from tying Jennifer Cork-ing (2005-08) for third all-time. RED RAIDERS CONTINUE LONG HOMESTANDThe Red Raiders are currently in the middle of a 25-game homestand that began with the Texas Tech Invitational on Feb. 18. Tech will play at home for nearly a month, hosting two more separate tourna-ments and a midweek doubleheader against New Mexico before heading to South Florida for the USF - The Game Tournament. The homestand is the lon-gest in school history.

ALLEN MAKES SUCCESSFUL DEBUTAfter only one weekend in a Red Raider uniform, Cydney Allen has already proved why she was one of the most highly sought-after recruits in the na-tion coming out of Salt Lake Community College. The junior catcher had a hit in each of Tech’s game at the Kajikawa Classic and had at least two hits in four of five games. Allen finished with a .556 average off a team-high 10 hits, including a two-run home run against Indiana as part of her five RBIs on the week.

FOX NOT ONLY FAMILY MEMBER IN TOP 25Texas Tech assistant coach Kristy Fox is not the only member of the Fox family ranked in the top 25. Fox’s younger sister, Kellie Fox, is the starting shortstop for 10th-ranked UCLA as only a freshman.

BLEDSOE DELIVERS TOP-FIVE MOMENTEmily Bledsoe has had many significant hits in her Texas Tech career, but few may have been bigger than her two-run walkoff home run against Appa-lachian State that sent Tech to a 10-9 come-from-behind victory. The junior described the hit as a “top five moment” during Monday’s media session.

TALLEY TALLIES UP THE RESULTSFor being only a freshman, Brittany Talley had a lot of responsibility on her left arm in Arizona. The Lit-tle Elm, Texas native got the start against both No. 16 BYU and No. 12 Cal, picking up the win against the Golden Bears. Talley was an out away from a complete game win over BYU before the Cougars responded with a game-tying two-run home run. After going 5.1 innings against Cal, Talley returned to the circle later in the night to close the Indiana game, going the final 2.2 innings to earn the save.

DON’T FORGET ABOUT DREWRYWith all the individual successes of the Kajikawa Classic, the play of Stephanie Drewry should not be forgotten. The junior outfielder went 2-for-3 at the plate against Appalachian State and drove in a career-high five RBIs while posting a .467 average.

KENNEY MOVES TO LEADOFF SPOTAfter spending most of the 2010 season in the mid-dle of the Tech lineup, Mikey Kenney moved to the leadoff spot to start this season. Known as one of Tech’s top power hitters, Kenney has recorded a .442 average with two home runs and 23 RBIs.

BIG 12 PROVES TOUGH ONCE AGAINTo say the Big 12 schedule will be a cake-walk for any team would be an exaggeration. Eight of the confer-ence’s 10 schools appeared in one of the two major top 25 polls this week with one more (Kansas) also receiving votes.

ALL-BIG 12 TRIO RETURNSTech’s trio of All-Big 12 second team selections from a year ago in Emily Bledsoe, Logan Hall, and Mikey Kenney all return to the diamond this spring. RED RAIDERS TURN TO NEW ARMSFollowing the graduation of former standout pitch-er Ashly Jacobs, Tech will look at several new faces in the circle, including junior college transfer Kelsey Dennis and freshmen Brittany Talley and Kermitria Ward. No stranger to building programs, Shanon Hays took over as head coach of the Texas Tech softball team in 2010 and imme-diately led the Red Raid-ers back to the NCAA postseason in only his first season, laying the groundwork for a pro-gram on the rise.

The fifth head coach since the resurrection of the program in 1996, Hays helped guide the Red Raid-ers to a 23-win improvement last year from the 2009 season, while eventually advancing all the way to the championship game of the NCAA Stanford Re-gional.

Under Hays, all facets of the game improved as the Tech hitters snapped the school record for runs, slugging percentage, and home runs in a season, while the pitching staff boasted its lowest earned-run average since 2001 and the Tech defense com-mitted its fewest errors in school history.

Most importantly, Tech’s win-loss record received the biggest improvement under Hays, whose 38-18 record in his first season is the best finish for a first-year head coach in program history. Three Tech play-ers - Emily Bledsoe, Logan Hall, and Mikey Kenney, were named to the All-Big 12 second team following the regular season.

Tech’s transformation should come as little surprise after Hays’ work at Lubbock Christian. Following his

appointment as the program’s first head softball coach in 2006, Hays worked for a full academic year in preparation for LCU’s first season in 2008.

The Lady Chaps did not disappoint in their inaugu-ral season, compiling a 60-9 record and claiming the NAIA National Championship, earning Hays NAIA National Coach of the Year honors. Hays wrapped his two-year tenure at LCU with a 114-16 overall record after advancing to the national championship again in 2009. Known as a top-flight recruiter and motiva-tor, Hays was named the Sooner Athletic Conference Coach of the Year both seasons and produced five National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) and NAIA first team All-Americans during his tenure.

Hays turned to softball after a successful career as a basketball coach that included two seasons on the Texas Tech bench as an assistant coach from 1999-2001 under James Dickey. He is the first person at Texas Tech to coach two completely different sports (one men’s and now one women’s).

Prior to accepting the softball position at LCU, Hays was the associate head men’s basketball coach at the University of Houston in 2005-06. Working un-der head coach Tom Penders, Hays found his knack as a recruiter, helping sign one of the nation’s top 15 recruiting classes in only his first season where the Cougars won 18 games and advanced to a national tournament for the first time in three years.

In each coaching stop, Hays left as the winningest head coach in school history according to winning percentage. He ended his collegiate basketball ten-ure with a 107-42 record as a head coach.

Hays began playing fastpitch softball as a youth, along with baseball and basketball, because his father, the legendary Texas Tech and LCU baseball coach Larry Hays, also played fastpitch softball. Hays, the elder, whose 1,509 wins were good enough for fourth on the all-time collegiate baseball list, retired as Tech’s all-time winningest coach prior to the 2009 season.

In a rare twist, Larry Hays succeeded his son at LCU for one season prior to Daren Hays, Shanon’s brother and former Tech assistant baseball coach and direc-tor of operations, accepted the position to lead the Lady Chaps beginning with the 2011 season.

Shanon Hays began and ended his college career at LCU, graduating with his degree in Education in 1991 after also matriculating at Texas Tech and com-peting from 1988 - 1990 for his father on the Red Raiders’ baseball team. He competed for LCU prior to that in both baseball and on the basketball teams.

He graduated from Lubbock Monterey High School in 1986 and makes his home in Lubbock with his wife, Tina, his two sons, Hunter, Heath, and his daughter, Hampton.
