Hello Friends and fellow Limousin enthusiasts,

If you are looking for that silver lining in the cloud of economic and

drought news, look to the the junior program in Texas. Texas juniors

turned out in large numbers at both the State and National shows, and their

accomplishments are praise worthy.

Many current breeders became involved in the breed through the junior

program, looking at the current crop of juniors, the future looks bright for

the Limousin breed. This drought will pass and when it does our breed is

positioning itself for positive growth. These young people as future breeders

will play a part in that growth.

Mark Anderson Executive Director of the North American Limousin

Foundation recently addressed a group of TLA members in Abilene. Mark

relayed his positive experiences with Limousin genetics in the feed yards and

the advantages the breed offers to allow diverse marketing options, Natural

programs, Lauras Lean, Strauss Veal, etc. Mark also discussed the importance

of Texas to the beef industry in general and the growth of the Limousin breed

in particular.

Many breeders are in a survival mode due to conditions out of their control,

however it is important to realize there is a bright future for our cattle. Now

more than ever it is important to work together to keep our association strong

and united towards the common goal of growing our breed.

Sincerely,

Ralph

Suzanne Taylor organized “Fiesta Beef,” a skit that included a senora, two handsome vaqueros, a condescending cowgirl, dancing senoritas and a mariachi band. The ages in this skit ranged from 1 to 21. It was great to see all of them working together. The Fiesta Beef recipe was supplied by Susan Carmichael. This group had a great time and garnished a second place Cook-Off Team from the judges and won the Peoples’ Choice Award.

peTe carmichaelPeter Albert Carmichael of Timber Lake, South Dakota,

passed away August 31. Pete was born November 1, 1932,

to Peter and Garnet (Miller) Carmichael in Faith, South

Dakota. Pete attended school through the 8th grade and

worked for his parents and area neighbors herding sheep

and ranching. As a teenager he participated in the Eddie

Bachman Wild West Show.

He was inducted into the U.S. Army by his father, who

was on the draft board, in January 1953 and participated

in combat in South Korea. He earned the Korean Service

ribbon with one Bronze Service Star, National Defense

Service Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, and United

Nations Service Medal. Pete was honorably discharged

August 13, 1954. His discharge certificate lists his main

civilian occupation as a “saddle horse breaker.”

Upon his return, he traveled the rodeo circuit and

married Treva McGinnis and this union produced three

children, Tracie, Ryan and Graling.

From 1959-1966 he was the ranch foreman for the

Western Cattle Co. at White Thunder Ranch near

Milesville, South Dakota. He then began ranching on the

Cheyenne River until March 1974.

He married Ann Rankin, with daughter Julie, in 1970

and in 1974 they purchased land near Timber Lake, South

Dakota, and started Lookout Limousin Ranch where they

raised Limousin cattle.

Pete was a pioneer in the purebred cattle industry,

implementing artificial insemination, pregnancy testing

and embryo transplant.

He tested 15 to 20 thousand cows a year for over 40

years. His first border collie, Tom, put about 450,000 cows

down the chute for him.

In the spring of 1998 he sold the main ranch and

retired. During his “retirement” he bred and trained

some of the top border collies in the nation. Along with

running upwards of 1,000 head of sheep, he traveled the

United States judging and participating in sheep and

cattle dog trials.

Pete received the 2007 South Dakota Master Lamb

Producer, 2008 South Dakota Excellence in Range

Management Area III, and the 2010 Tom Didier Pioneer

Award.

His legacy was his sense of humor, work ethic, and

ability to relate to people and dogs of all ages.

He is survived by his wife, Ann of 41 years and children

Tracie Bollinger; Ryan and Susan Carmichael; Graling

and Carla Carmichael; Julie and Dan Mewes; and Heidi

and Deb Ducheneaux; 14 grandchildren, eight great

grandchildren and two sisters.
