Dear Families,

Welcome back to Term 2, 2019. We hope all families, students and staff had a relaxing break and are energised for another great term ahead. We welcome Elaine Nay, a new staff member in M8 IELP for Terms 2 and 3 and James Goodridge who is a final year student from Flinders University doing a double degree in Special Education working in M1.

Term 2 will see the continuation of our numeracy and literacy focus, NAPLAN assessments will be held in Week 3. Thank you to all parents/care-givers for your strong support of our Attendance Policy. Also please keep supporting our students to wear the correct school uniform everyday.

ANZAC DAY

ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. The soldiers in those forces quickly became known as Anzacs, and the pride they took in that name endures to this day.

Last Thursday we celebrated Anzac Day which is the solemn day of remembrance of those Australian and New Zealand Army Corps soldiers who have fought and died for their country, and is marked annually on the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. Anzac Day, the 25th of April, is one of Australia’s most important national occasions.

Australians recognise 25th April as a day of national remembrance, which takes two forms. Commemorative services are held across the nation at dawn – the time of the original landing, while later in the day, former servicemen and servicewomen meet to take part in marches through the country’s major cities and in many smaller centres. Commemorative ceremonies are more

formal, and are held at war memorials around the country. In these ways, Anzac Day is a time at which Australians reflect on the many different meanings of war.

Well done to the 2019 SAPSASA cross-country squad for their fine efforts in

competing in the Torrens River District carnival. This year it was held at the

new venue at Foxfield Oval, Athelstone, under threatening skies and cool

wind.

East Torrens’ took the largest ever team to

the carnival and each member strove for

their best efforts and enjoyed cheering on

their peers during each gruelling race.

Well done to each squad member.

The reward of hot chips in the staff room was well received.

In 2019 our school will be transitioning from hardcopy newsletters to digital form by using the Skoolbag app and on our website. Skoolbag is a digital app which will help us communicate more effectively with our family/student community. We are asking families to install the Skoolbag app in preparation for this.

To install it, just search for the Skoolbag app in the Apple App Store or Google Play and install the Skoolbag app on your device, then tap in the select your school search and type in your school name.

East Torrens is an environmentally friendly school and we will endeavour to put all newsletters on the app in the future rather than send copies.
