35American History—Beginnings through ReconstructionChapter 1: The World Before 1500 (Beginnings to 1500)

1 Activate Prior KnowledgeModel the KWL Chart in the Best Practices Toolkit. Then have students begin one on early Native American societies. Ask students what they know about the subject. Point out that early Native American peoples were diverse, with different customs and ways of life. Have students use the discussion to fill in the first column of the KWL Chart. Then have them fill in the second column, writing any questions they may have. Tell students to fill in the third column after they read the section.

2 Preview Main Ideas and LanguageCONNECT VISUALLYHave students study the map on PE p. 7. Read aloud the introduction and description of the three major groups. Then ask: Which groups included the largest populations? (sedentary) Which group included no permanent settlements? (nonsedentary) Which group relied on a combination of farming and hunting? (semisedentary)

BUILD VOCABULARY To help students keep track of the three different types of societies and different Native American civilizations, have students use a T-Chart activity from the Best Practices Toolkit.

3 Make Objectives ExplicitPresent the objectives listed below. Then have pairs of students get together and explain the objectives in their own words.

• Describe the three basic types of societies that developed in the Americas.

• Discuss the development and decline of the Olmec and Maya civilizations.

• Discuss the achievements of the Inca and Aztec civilizations.

• Tell how native North Americans lived before the 1400s.

4 Support Student ReadingCOOPERATIVE WORKTo help students summarize what they learned about early Native American societies, have partners work together to fill in the third column of the KWL Chart.

ON ONE’S OWN Preview the following questions. Then have students search for their answers while reading.

1. Which groups of peoples dominated Mesoamerica from A.D. 250 to 900? (p. 6, par. 4)

2. How did the Aztecs unite communities under a single government? (p. 8, par. 5)

3. What influenced Native American religions? (p. 9, par. 3)

5 Prepare for AssessmentTo check comprehension, review the multiple-choice questions on TT1 of Daily Test Practice Transparencies. To assess comprehension, use the Section Quiz on p. 41 of the Unit 1 Resource Book.

39American History—Beginnings through ReconstructionChapter 1: The World Before 1500 (Beginnings to 1500)

1 Activate Prior KnowledgeHave students use a Brainstorming activity in the Best Practices Toolkit to discuss trades they have made. What have they traded in the past? Were they satisfied or disappointed with their trades? What do they own now that they might like to trade? What would they trade it for? Explain that like the students, many African societies traded to get things that they wanted.

2 Preview Main Ideas and LanguageCONNECT VISUALLYHave students study the map on PE p. 14. Have them trace the major trade routes. Ask: In what parts of Africa are most of the trade routes located? (Northern and Western Africa) What geographical feature makes up a large part of northern Africa? (the Sahara Desert)

BUILD VOCABULARY Read and discuss the text under the subhead “War and Slavery in African Kingdoms” in class. Then have student partners complete a Reporter’s Questions activity for the Best Practices Toolkit on slavery in Africa.

3 Make Objectives ExplicitPresent the objectives listed below. Then have pairs of students get together and explain the objectives in their own words.

• Describe the geography of Africa and the continent’s trade routes.

• Explain how Ghana and the Kingdom of Mali developed.

• Tell about war and slavery in Africa.

4 Support Student ReadingCOOPERATIVE WORKTo help students summarize what they learned in this section, have student pairs complete a Note-Taking, Note Making activity in the Best Practices Toolkit.

ON ONE’S OWN Preview the following questions. Then have students search for their answers while reading.

1. What are three important geographical features of Africa? (p. 13, par. 5)

2. How did Islam spread throughout Africa? (p. 14, par. 3)

3. Why did Ghana prosper between A.D. 700 and 1100? (p. 14, par. 4)

4. Which two kingdoms dominated Central Africa in the late 1400s? (p. 15, par. 4)

5 Prepare for AssessmentTo check comprehension, review the multiple-choice questions on TT2 of Daily Test Practice Transparencies. To assess comprehension, use the Section Quiz on p. 42 of the Unit 1 Resource Book.

ACTIVATING PRIOR KNOWLEDGE Use a P.L.A.N. activity in the Best Practices Toolkit to have students scan the text to preview content, locate visuals, and identify bold-faced key terms. To get students started, project the transparency. Enter “Societies of Africa” in the center and put the subheads in the surrounding circles. Have half the class scan the text to identify the pictures, map, and sidebar features. Have the other half identify the boldfaced words in the text. Then ask the groups to list the visuals and the vocabulary terms on the transparency, connecting each to its appropriate subhead.

During Reading

FOCUSED READING Use a Listening/Reading Guide activity and transparency in the Best Practices Toolkit to help students understand Section 2. Create questions on key ideas, as shown below. Give each student sticky notes needed to mark the locations of the answers as they read. Then read the questions aloud, and have students circle the most important words in each question. Then have students return to find and write the answers.

1. What three large geographic zones can be found on the continent of Africa?

2. Why did Ghana prosper between A.D. 700 and 1100?

3. Why did African kings prefer to capture instead of kill their enemies?

After Reading

ASSESSING COMPREHENSION Use a Divide and Conquer Four-Square activity in the Best Practices Toolkit to summarize information about the three subtopics in this section. Give each group a copy of the transparency and ask them to list the two or three most important ideas in the subtopic they have been assigned. Here is an example for “West African Kingdoms”: • Ghana controlled trade routes for gold and salt and prospered between A.D. 700 and

1100.

• The powerful kingdom of Mali took over Ghana by the 1200s.

• Mansa Musa, Mali’s ruler, promoted Islam in the region.
